She begins by acknowledging the emails she has received from listeners sharing their own metaphors and expresses her gratitude for being able to share their wisdom on the show. Gina also mentions the unfortunate experience of a listener who was mocked by a psychiatrist when using metaphors to express themselves, and promises to address this issue in a future episode. She emphasizes that while metaphors may not come naturally to us, they can be a powerful tool in reaching our psyche and finding creative solutions. She believes that metaphors can greatly assist us on our mental health journeys. Several listener metaphors are shared, including one from N who likens anxiety to a hurricane. N describes her personal coping strategies for navigating the storm, such as meditation, breathing exercises, and calming music. Another metaphor that resonates with Gina is the image of sunshine after the rain, representing hope and renewal. She frequently observes nature and its cycles, which serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness between our lives and the natural world. Learn more about your ad choices. Latest Podcast from Spoken Label features the wonderful Laura Formentini. Laura in her own words is "I am an author, photographer, and activist. I share how a stranger has helped me to heal from tragic loss thanks to an act of kindness." She is the author of Twentyone Olive Trees which is "is my personal spiritual pilgrimage from uncontrollable pain to acceptance and healing that I gift to the world to help those going through their own grief and dark moments. I chose the title Twentyone Olive Trees because my son was twenty-one when he passed away and I also intend to plant twenty-one olive trees in his honor at a healing sanctuary that I am currently creating." 1) Intro (Extract) 2) The Weaver by Grant Coldfax 3) Camel and spider (Fable) 4) One thing 5) What difference does it make? More about Laura can be found out at his website: https://lauraformentini.com/ Praise for Laura's book include: Alexa Bigwarfe Author, Sunshine After the Storm: A Survival Guide for the Grieving Mother “Truly, 21 Olive Trees is a beautiful expression of a mother's aching love and will resonate with those who have experienced grief.” Mea Smith Author, Grief Like a River: Poems and Illustrations “Turning the love that grief leaves behind into a piece of beauty that lifts up others, Laura Formeninti shares the life lessons that loving and losing her son has taught her in 21 Olive Trees. These tender and touching fables offer a message of hope to the grieving – that love never dies.” Lindsey M. Henke, MSW, LICSW Founder of Pregnancy After Loss Support “The thread that runs through Twentyone Olive Trees is her eternal love for her son. As a grief counselor to parents who lose babies, I have witnessed countless times how the pain of the loss continues to transform over time and how much solace parents find when they eventually create an “intuitive bridge” between themselves and their child, as the author did. The poignant poems beautifully express the varied experiences of bereaved parents, and the beautifully illustrated fables will teach children and adults alike important lessons in coping with grief and moving toward hope, acceptance and growth. The author's wish to “lift up as many people as possible” will most certainly be realized as they use their own inner wisdom and imagination to connect with their child after death.”
I published my first book, Sunshine After the Storm: A Survival Guide for the Grieving Mother, 8 years ago today, officially launching Kat Biggie Press on October 15, 2013, Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day.

Sunshine After the Storm Alexa Bigwarfe On today’s episode of the GIVE podcast we are thrilled to welcome Alexa Bigwarfe, the creator of the Sunshine After the Storm nonprofit. Sunshine After the Storm is a nonprofit to support women who have lost children in utero or shortly thereafter. As with most nonprofits, it started to help fill a void that the creator never anticipated on seeing. Alexa’s journey into nonprofits began with the tragic loss of one of her twin babies. As she was going through the grieving process she started blogging to work through some of these feelings that she had and bringing awareness to the horrific realities that women in Alexa’s place are going through. Blogging turned into writing a book. When she was writing the book- she realized that she did not want grieving mothers to have to pay for it- so she sent them the book and a small care package for free. This gave her the idea to create the nonprofit, so she could help more and more moms and dads who are going through this difficult time. Bunnie and Felicia, Bailee’s mom, talk about her journey overcoming addiction and coming back into her daughter’s life. Bailee talks about what it’s like to have her mom back in her life and how they have combatted her addiction as a family. Takeaways: Jelly and Felicia first hooked up when she was 16 Felicia got pregnant with Bailee in August or September of 2007, Bailee was born May 22, 2008 Jelly was very invested in jump starting his career and wasn’t always present in their relationship; their relationship was very turbulent. Jelly got arrested and was gone for a year in 2008, Bailee was born just after he left. When he got out of jail and wanted to see Bailee, Felicia wouldn’t let him. Felicia wanted Jelly to be consistent and really be there for Bailee Now, they have a co-parenting agreement. Felicia’s drug addiction started with pain pills after she had Bailee She started off with Lortabs She then moved up to 40 mg Opana, which she took several times a day; this then escalated to heroine when she was around 24 years old No one knew she was using heroine, everyone assumed it was pills Her first time using, she threw up She went from snorting it to shooting it up When she shot up, she would get really tired and fall asleep; when she would snort it she had more energy and it helped with pain relief Between 2016 and 2017, Bunnie and Jelly got custody of Bailee It got very bad at the end of her addiction and Bailee needed to get away from the situation After Bailee was gone, Felicia went into a downward spiral Felicia started smoking crack and shooting up methamphetamines She was desperately trying to fill the void that was in her heart from Bailee’s absence In the beginning Felicia was pissed, but she realized over time that Bunnie and Jelly were doing what was best for Bailee when she couldn’t; now her and Bunnie have a great relationship and are like sisters Felicia’s recovery: She went away for 16 months and had no contact with Bailee Bailee and Jelly wrote the song “Sunshine after the Rain” When she got out, she was allowed visitation gradually and then eventually allowed to stay at the house At first, Felicia was overwhelmed with falling back into the routine of being a mom and relearning how to have structure in her life She relapsed on methamphetamines, and landed back in jail after 6 weeks Bunnie and Jelly called her sponsor to get her help before she self-destructed When she went back to jail, she got signed up for recovery court Now she has a sponsor, a job, she bought her own car, she is house manager at her recovery house, and life is slowly falling back into place Bunnie and Jelly made Felicia take them back to court to be able to be a part of Bailee’s life again They wanted to make sure she was serious this time for Bailee’s sake When Felicia is around, Bailee is so much more at peace Felicia’s advice for recovery: It does get better; talk to people, open up; you have to have a support system to get better Anyone can get into a sober house You don’t have to be on probation or be court ordered There is a crisis line called the Tennessee REDLINE that you can call. It is a 24/7 toll-free information and referral line to get substance abusers information to get in touch with counselors or medical professionals who can help them battle their addiction. The Tennessee REDLINE phone number: 1-800-889-9789 There are so many rehabs, sober living/ transitional living places you can reach out to. Some are grants and state paid and will take anybody. Bunnie, Jelly, and Bailee are so proud of the progress Felicia has made and the effort she has put forth to be back in Bailee’s life The process of recovery for Felicia has taught all of them a lot about forgiveness and second chances Bunnie and Bailee share a similar story. Bunnie’s mom is an addict and she was raised by her dad; her mom never came back into her life in the way that Felicia fought to be back with Bailee. Bailee was scared when she first saw her mom again and didn’t know how to react at first She wrote her mom a letter to help express her emotions through her mom’s battle with addiction Bailee and Felicia are so happy to be back in each other’s lives Quotes: “Oh, I love a good Lor-d’oeuvre” – Bunnie “I’m so glad to be back”- Felicia “At this point it’s just showing up and showing out”- Felicia Mentioned: Sponsored by: Adam and Eve Adam and Eve Official Website Use the Code BUNNIE for 50% off! The most requested guest joins Bunnie this week — her daughter Bailee Ann! This smart, well spoken, and super talented little gal joins Bunnie and Jelly to talk about what keeps her so booked and busy as a 6th grader, the hilarious story of how she and Bunnie met, and their quirky family traditions. Bailee also spills the secrets on a real typical family night at home, what it’s like having Bunnie and Jelly as parents, how she stays so strong, and what’s going on for her in the world of music and writing. Takeaways: Bailee made the big move this year from elementary school to junior high, and is killing the 6th grade game so far. She just made it into choir and picked up the drums as an instrument in addition to playing the guitar. Bailee is a natural born performer and entertainer. She didn’t have a shred of stage fright with joining Jelly in front of 800 people in Dallas, Texas. As proven with her great work writing a verse on Jelly’s “Sunshine After the Rain,'' Bailee loves the mixture of rapping, singing, and songwriting. Once she starts writing more, Jelly will take her into the studio and help her produce some tracks. Bailee has been making up her own lyrics and songs since she was very little. Jelly fully supports her creativity, but also is very protective of her in the music business. Jelly has been focusing more on his health lately, and has been hitting the weights so much Bunnie thought his rock hard arm was actually his elbow! Yes, Bunnie and Jelly will have a wedding one day in the near future, and Bailee will get a brother or sister. They have baby fever and promise to bring everyone along on the journey. Bailee and Bunnie accidentally met first on FaceTime 8 months before they met in person. Bailee wasted no time and asked Bunnie what her intentions were for Jelly, and she was happy to hear Bunnie just wanted to look out and care for them both as a family. The whole family goes absolutely crazy for Halloween, and embraces it fully. This year they are thinking of being the Adams Family, so keep your eyes peeled for a super hot Morticia. Bailee stayed strong while her biological mother battled with addiction. She is a role model to all of us that it’s powerful to express our feelings and even cry. Bunnie doesn’t mind being the “bad cop” when it comes to keeping miss Bailee safe, sound, and a little lady with great manners. It’s all in the name of love. Quotes: “It’s easier for me to sing or be able to do something musical about my story or how I’m feeling than to talk about it.” “The worst thing you tell a fat person is that they are shaped like a refrigerator.” “I never get in trouble, except on holidays.” “Being strong means allowing yourself to hurt, and then healing from it.” “The whole being a girl thing is what my dad is strict about.” Mentioned: “Sunshine After the Rain” Check out Bunnie: @xomgitsbunnie BunnieXo @officialdumbblonde

In this episode we talked about: Alexa's surprise of being pregnant with twin girls, who they would later find out suffer from a common disease, Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS), which ultimately led to the loss of one twin baby girl. The loss of Alexa’s baby affecting her relationship and faith in God. Alexa: “All I could think about was, “Why do you hate me?” ... and I just ended my relationship with God.” The struggles Alexa had with herself in who she was and how she fell into a dark place in her life. How the relationship with her husband fell apart and how they would continue with their lives going on their own paths while still being parents to their kids. The events that led to Alexa’s faith in God being fully restored and the newest commitments her husband started to make for their relationship and family to be stronger than ever. Alexa’s inspiration to share her story, write her books, and build her business and community towards helping families that can relate to her difficult life experiences. Here’s a few quotes that we thought were awesome: [10:20] “God never promises that it’s going to be kittens and rainbows…he never promises it’s going to be easy.” [11:11] “He’s [God] sending us to walk through this hard trial and to learn and to grow and to gain the knowledge so that we can help other people along their journey.” [26:16] “…I try really hard to drop my own pride and to say, “You’re not doing things right all the time either.” and “How is this impacting him [Alexa’s husband]? How does this make him feel?”, and most importantly, “What are you doing to make him feel loved?” When you start loving on someone like that, the response is incredible.” [29:11] “It’s really not only trying to think through things from the other person’s perspective before you get so angry at them that you’re at a darker place, [but] along with learning to communicate and actually communicating.” [34:19] “If you’re marriage is riding the struggle train, I think that if you can find ways to go back to the very things that you did when you first were dating and were first falling in love, that that just brings a level of lightness and joy back into it.” Links Mentioned On Our Show: The Question Behind The Question podcast episode by Stacy Tuschl The Popcast Podcast with Knox and Jamie Kat Biggie Lose The Cape Book Lost The Cape Podcast Moms Lose the Cape: The Mom's Guide to Becoming Socially & Politically Engaged (& How to Raise Tiny Activists) Princess Monroe Write Publish Sell Alexa Bigwarfe Daily Bumps About our guest: Alexa Bigwarfe is a wife, mother to 3 wildlings, devoted advocate, blogger, author, and publisher. Alexa Bigwarfe is the founder of WritePublishSell.co, Kat Biggie Press, a book publishing imprint, and creator of the "Women in Publishing Summit." Alexa began her professional career in counter terrorism and Homeland Security, but due to the demanding nature of the job, she decided to stay at home with her two children. Shortly thereafter, she found out she was pregnant with two twins, who were diagnosed with a rare disease. She lost one of her children shortly after birth, which prompted her to write and share her experience to help other grieving mothers who suffered from the loss of loved ones. Through her blogging, she connected with a community of other writers, and she published her first book "Sunshine After the Storm: A Survival Guide for the Grieving Mother." From this collaborative effort, she received many inquiries from aspiring authors who wanted to publish a book. So Alexa started a book publishing company, Kat Biggie Press, and began to offer book production and marketing services. As things picked up, Alexa decided to run a virtual summit to generate new business. Unfortunately, it flopped financially, only making back 10% of her investment in the entire campaign. So she tried again, with her second summit. This was, in her words, another disaster. But Alexa didn't quit - she knew there was great upside potential if she could get a virtual summit off the ground the right way. So she started to prepare for a third and final shot at growing her business, and that's when we connected. In Alexa's own words: "And then Tom came into my life right as I was getting ready to do number 3 and the results were quite different..." In fact, not only was this summit profitable, unlike the first two campaigns she ran, but she generated 207 sales (and counting, as sales are still rolling in) of her All Access Pass, and launched a group coaching program, all of which led to just shy of $20,000 (which doesn't include additional client work she's received as a direct result of her successful summit). In today's discussion, we dig into her story and go behind-the-scenes of her campaign, including what worked and what didn't... In this broadcast, Alexa Bigwarfe and I talk about: How Alexa got her start in publishing Why Alexa decided to run her first virtual summit How her first two virtual summits were "disasters"...and what she did different for her third summit that changed everything for her business How to get people to buy an "All Access Pass" to your virtual summit (hint: it doesn't happy naturally) One tip I gave Alexa that helped her generate over 200 sales from her summit Why a "content / partnership" strategy is so important (and how this strategy helped her make just shy of $20,000 from her most recent virtual summit) How to deal with trolls and haters (and why they are inevitable when you start reaching any level of success) And much more. How to connect with Alexa Bigwarfe online: www.writepublishsell.co @katbiggie Great quote from ALEXA BIGWARFE: “I have big goals and hopes for the Women in Publishing Summit...it's really sparked something bigger for me...and it's because of an intense strategy.” - Alexa Bigwarfe Get the Latest Broadcasts of In The Trenches Subscribe to In The Trenches on iTunes How You Can Support In The Trenches Did you enjoy today's broadcast of In The Trenches?
