In the episode, they delve into the significant relationship between nutrition, lifestyle choices, and mental health, emphasizing how the over-reliance on pharmaceuticals in mental health care can overshadow the benefits of a holistic approach that includes food and other lifestyle factors. Ramsey, who has an impressive academic and professional background—including a position as an assistant clinical professor at Columbia University and the founder of the Brain Food Clinic—shares insights from his latest book, "Healing the Modern Brain: Nine Tenets to Build Mental Fitness and Revitalize Your Mind." He stresses that the current mental health epidemic demands an enhanced focus on building mental fitness through practical lifestyle changes. This approach, he argues, provides a broader and more meaningful path to emotional well-being rather than simply relying on medication. The conversation transitions to Ramsey's personal experiences with mental health struggles, touching on moments from his college years when he faced low energy and cognitive fog. He reflects on the adjustments he made when moving from rural Indiana to urban Manhattan for his psychiatric training, discussing how these life changes impacted his mental health. Acknowledging the complexity of mental health, Ramsey highlights that it's essential to discern the interplay between various life challenges, from parenting stresses to negotiation of personal identity. #MentalHealth, #NutritionalPsychiatry, #MentalFitness, #SelfCare, #Wellness, #Psychology, #Psychiatry, #Lifestyle, #Diet, #Nutrition, #HolisticHealth, #IntegrativeMedicine, #BrainHealth, #PersonalGrowth, #SelfAwareness, #Healing, #Anxiety, #Depression, #StressManagement, #Mindfulness, #Wellbeing, #GinaRyan, #ACP, #AnxietyCoachesPodcast Learn more about your ad choices. Deb Dana is not only a respected author of several influential books, including "Polyvagal Prompts" and "Polyvagal Exercises for Safety and Connection," but she is also a co-editor of "Clinical Applications of the Polyvagal Theory" with Dr. Stephen Porges. The discussion centers around her new book, "Glimmer's Journal," which encourages readers to reflect on the small moments that foster joy, safety, and connection—core themes that resonate deeply with the podcast's mission. Gina dives straight into Deb's journey, highlighting how she encountered Dr. Porges' work and realized the vital role the body and nervous system play in psychotherapy. Deb recounts the pivotal moment when she first read Dr. Porges' book, likening it to finding a missing piece of the puzzle in her understanding of the human experience. She shares how her initial outreach led to a collaborative workshop with Dr. Porges, which opened the door for her to incorporate Polyvagal Theory into clinical practice and ultimately inspired the tools and frameworks she has developed. The conversation explores key concepts of Polyvagal Theory, particularly the significance of safety and the role of the nervous system in our daily lives. Deb explains the concept of neuroception, describing how our nervous systems constantly assess safety and danger based on both internal cues—such as physical sensations and emotional states—and external cues from our environment and interactions with others. She emphasizes that an understanding of these dynamics can empower individuals to discern their feelings of anxiety and recognize them as adaptive survival responses rather than indications of personal failure. #mentalwellness #selfcare #wellbeing #emotionalhealth #innerpeace #healing #resilience #mindbodyconnection #polyvagalinformed #polyvagalpractice #panicattacks #overwhelm #copingskills #ACP #AnxietyCoachesPodcast #GinaRyan Learn more about your ad choices. Ashraf, a highly respected figure in personal development, brings a wealth of knowledge with his background as a successful entrepreneur, author of 14 books (including two New York Times bestsellers), and appearances in prominent films such as "The Secret." Throughout the conversation, John emphasizes the importance of mental fitness and personal growth, discussing his experiences that shaped his journey and his innovative approaches to mindset coaching. John shares his tumultuous background, detailing the challenges he faced growing up, including familial instability due to an alcoholic father, personal insecurities, and involvement in illegal activities. These experiences led him to a pivotal moment in his life when his brother introduced him to Alan Brown, a successful real estate developer who became his mentor. This encounter was transformative, as Brown prompted John to reflect on his goals and dreams, challenging him to distinguish between being interested in achieving his aspirations and being truly committed to them. This distinction acted as a catalyst for John's personal development, and he committed to changing the trajectory of his life. The discussion moves toward the fundamental concept of belief systems, where John elaborates on how beliefs shape our reality and behaviors. He explains the two types of beliefs: declarative beliefs—those we can consciously acknowledge—and non-declarative beliefs, which reside in our subconscious and often dictate our self-worth and potential. He emphasizes that no one is born with beliefs; rather, they're formed through experiences, interactions, and environmental influences throughout life. John utilizes vivid metaphors to help listeners visualize this process, likening belief patterns to software that runs within our brains, often filled with misconceptions and secondhand narratives rather than objective truths. #anxiety #mindset #success #personalgrowth #selfimprovement #mentalfitness #neuroscience #motivation #selfdevelopment #overcomeanxiety #breakthrough #mindsetcoach #successmindset #personaltransformation #neuropsychology #selfbelief #mindfulness Learn more about your ad choices. The key takeaway is that it's natural for life to be uncertain, and accepting this fact can alleviate the need for control, leading to a lighter mental state. Both anxiety and depression have become more prevalent due to the heightened uncertainty, with many experiencing these feelings, making it important to understand the differences between the two. Anxiety is characterized by apprehension about the future, worried thoughts, and a desire to avoid triggering situations. On the other hand, depression manifests as sadness, hopelessness, and lack of belief in positive outcomes. It's crucial to recognize these thinking symptoms in ourselves and those around us. Physical symptoms differ between anxiety and depression, with anxiety often presenting as the fight or flight response, while depression may lead to severe lack of energy, appetite changes, and sleep disturbances. Moreover, there can be a crossover of symptoms between anxiety and depression, which can exacerbate each other if left unchecked. Seeking help and support if experiencing heightened anxiety or depression is crucial, as both conditions are treatable with the right approach and commitment to improving mental health. It's essential not to feel shame or embarrassment in asking for help and to understand that the path to overcoming these challenges may have ups and downs, requiring patience and self-compassion. Together, we can navigate these difficult emotions and work towards a healthier mental state. Remember, depression lies; it tells you that you've always felt this way and always will, but that's not the truth. Stay strong, be patient with yourself, and know that with effort and time, improvement is possible. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Gina explains that anxiety sufferers often struggle with the idea of waiting and allowing time to heal, as anxiety is characterized by a sense of urgency and discomfort. Dr. Weeks emphasized the importance of understanding that anxiety symptoms, while distressing, are not dangerous and are the body's natural response to perceived threats. Gina delves into the idea of acceptance and not adding additional fear or resistance to anxiety symptoms. By allowing time to pass without fighting or escaping from anxiety, individuals can break the cycle of fear and gradually return to a state of calm. She highlights the significance of trusting the healing process and being patient with oneself, as recovery from anxiety is a gradual journey that requires consistent practice. Moreover, Gina touches on the mindfulness practices that encourage individuals to observe their feelings and bodily sensations without trying to change or avoid them. She emphasizes that immediate relief from anxiety is unrealistic and that lasting improvement comes from consistent application of acceptance and understanding over time. By repeatedly facing and accepting anxiety without adding fear, individuals can build confidence in their ability to handle it and ultimately reduce anxiety's power over them. Gina concludes by reiterating Dr. Weeks' message of having faith in the body and mind's capacity to heal and achieve lasting relief from anxiety. She encourages listeners to implement the principles of facing, accepting, floating, and letting time pass in their daily lives, reinforcing the commitment to the recovery process. A listener's request about a 10-year-old struggling with eating in the morning due to anxiety sparks the discussion. I emphasize the importance of establishing a consistent morning routine to provide a sense of security and control, which can help reduce anxiety. Practical tips such as creating a visual schedule, breaking down the morning into manageable chunks, and identifying essential tasks like brushing teeth and getting dressed are shared. Additionally, I introduce relaxation techniques such as breathing exercises, mindfulness practices, progressive muscle relaxation, and visualization to help children calm their nervous system and alleviate anxiety. Healthy breakfast options like smoothies, oatmeal, or toast with nut butter are suggested to prevent stomach upset caused by anxiety. Positive reinforcement, open communication about feelings, and problem-solving with the child are encouraged to build confidence and reduce stress. Visual aids like a morning schedule and comfort items can also be beneficial in easing anxiety and making the routine clearer and more predictable. Furthermore, the importance of acknowledging and validating children's emotions, sharing personal experiences to normalize feelings of stress and anxiety, and collaborating on finding solutions are highlighted. It is recommended to maintain consistency while being open to minor adjustments based on the child's needs. Lastly, I stress the importance of seeking professional support if needed and offer a quote by Wayne Dyer: "You can't always control what goes on outside, but you can always control what goes on inside." The episode provides comprehensive guidance on creating a supportive and predictable environment to help children manage morning anxiety and approach school with more confidence. Weeks believed that anxiety and panic attacks stemmed from a fear of the symptoms and sensations themselves, rather than any external threat, which she termed as "second fear." By practicing floating through anxiety, individuals are encouraged to accept and embrace anxious sensations without resistance, allowing them to gradually desensitize themselves to the experience of anxiety. Ryan explains that floating involves moving through anxious sensations without tense resistance, akin to floating on undulating water. By adopting a stance of non-resistance and observing anxious feelings without judgment, individuals can signal to their mind and body that there is nothing to fear, laying the foundation for peace and calm as a new default response. Floating teaches individuals to separate themselves from anxious thoughts, preventing them from adding more stress to the situation and ultimately contributing to desensitization. The benefits of practicing floating extend beyond navigating individual anxious experiences with less struggle, as each instance sends a message to the mind and body that it is safe to relax in such situations. By letting go of the need to control or analyze anxious feelings, individuals can cultivate a sense of safety and security within themselves. Ryan stresses the importance of gradually and repetitively practicing floating to rewire the mind and body's response to anxiety, ultimately teaching individuals that they are okay and do not need to engage in fight or flight responses to imagined threats. Despite having touched on this subject before, I believe revisiting it is valuable as repetition often leads to fresh insights. I address the perplexing issue of experiencing lingering symptoms even when feeling fine, which can trigger fear and perpetuate the anxiety cycle. It's crucial to understand that progress is not lost during such moments, and having patience and utilizing tools can help navigate through these sensations. I use the analogy of walking with a sharp rock in your shoe for a year to illustrate how healing from long-term anxiety takes time. Just as removing the rock brings relief but the foot needs time to heal, addressing anxiety provides immediate relief but requires patience for the body and mind to recover fully. Acknowledging the mobility of anxiety symptoms, which can shift across the body, is essential to distinguish them from physical ailments. Embracing the body's signals without resistance fosters calmness and aids in the healing process. Granting oneself permission for the healing process without imposing deadlines is crucial, along with differentiating between urgent signals and those seeking attention. Cultivating mindfulness through practices like meditation and yoga allows for a deeper connection with the body and fosters detachment from persistent sensations. However, as time went on, I found solace in the realms of philosophy and spirituality, diving into books that offered guidance and understanding. Through this exploration, I discovered yoga and the practice of mindful breathing, which provided temporary relief and allowed me to catch a glimpse of hope beyond the depths of anxiety. Meditation and mindfulness became my guiding lights, teaching me how to navigate stress and face challenges without succumbing to fear. Gradually, I found my way out of the dark abyss of anxiety. Although I struggled with anxiety for twenty years, I want you to know that you too can overcome it. Countless resources are available to assist you on your journey. After moving to Maui and working as a nutritionist with clients suffering from eating disorders, my interest in anxiety was piqued when I stumbled upon a podcast on Stitcher dedicated to the topic. I reached out to the host and ended up being a guest on the show. Eventually, the host decided to step down, and I was offered the opportunity to take over as the host of the Anxiety Coaches podcast. Although I was filled with both fear and excitement, I embraced the challenge. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Gina also touches on the polyvagal theory, explaining how our neural circuits scan the environment for danger. Understanding this theory can help us work with our body's natural responses to anxiety. Gina emphasizes the importance of calm acceptance as the ultimate goal in dealing with anxiety. She explains that it is okay to feel anxious and that there is nothing wrong with experiencing those emotions. She discourages the idea of striving for instant results and highlights the need for patience and gradual progress. Gina emphasizes that acceptance does not mean merely putting up with anxiety, but actively acknowledging and understanding it. She urges listeners to let go of the instinct to resist and instead adopt an attitude of acceptance. Gina encourages individuals to challenge their natural instincts to fight against anxiety and instead embrace a mindset of acceptance. She suggests relaxing into the feelings and letting go of the need to struggle against them, comparing it to floating in water rather than fighting against the current. Gina emphasizes the importance of giving up the need to control and fix things, as it may worsen anxiety. She reminds listeners that recovery is a gradual process that requires time and persistence, and that setbacks are a normal part of the journey. She opens with a quote from Mother Teresa, highlighting the idea that having less can lead to more freedom. While acknowledging that some individuals may try to stay occupied as a means of escaping stress and anxiety, Gina encourages listeners to consider embracing minimalism as a way to address these challenges directly. Gina explains that clutter, whether in our physical or mental spaces, can contribute to feelings of overwhelm and exhaustion. By intentionally focusing on what truly matters and simplifying our lives, we can create more mental space and promote a sense of calm. She emphasizes that minimalism goes beyond aesthetics; it involves intentionally shedding non-essential items and commitments to make room for what truly matters to us as individuals. The benefits of simplifying our external environments extend to our mental well-being. By decluttering our physical spaces, we can declutter our minds and experience a sense of lightness. Gina emphasizes that holding onto things, knowingly or unknowingly, occupies mental space. Thus, cleaning out physical clutter can create additional mental space. Mindful consumption habits are a crucial aspect of embracing minimalism. Gina suggests that by becoming more conscious of what we bring into our lives and adopting intentional consumption habits, we can break free from the impulsive choices that often contribute to anxiety. I emphasize the importance of self-awareness in recognizing our specific anxiety triggers and avoiding behaviors that temporarily make us feel better but actually feed our anxiety in the long run. Moving forward, I introduce common triggers such as social situations, driving or traveling, health concerns, and workplace stress. These triggers are often encountered in the workplace, where we face various stressors like deadlines, presentations, performance evaluations, and interactions with others. Uncertainty about future outcomes can also be a major trigger for anxiety, as well as conflicts and confrontations. Furthermore, anxiety related to performance can hinder our ability to complete tasks or engage in activities. To address these triggers, it is essential to face our anxiety head-on. This involves identifying specific situations or stimuli that cause distress and creating a hierarchy based on their anxiety-inducing levels. Gradually exposing ourselves to these situations, starting with the least distressing, is crucial for building resilience. During exposure, we can manage anxiety through techniques like deep breathing, muscle relaxation, and positive self-talk. As we progress through difficult situations and build confidence, we desensitize ourselves to anxiety triggers over time. Celebrating each achievement reinforces the effectiveness of gradual exposure and boosts motivation to continue facing anxiety. However, it's important to note that this process takes time and requires faith and a positive mindset. By systematically facing our anxiety triggers through gradual exposure, we can build resilience and reduce avoidance behaviors that keep us stuck. This approach aligns with Claire Weeks's emphasis on acceptance and non-resistance, understanding that anxiety is a temporary state that can be effectively managed. Many of my clients gain confidence and strength from Claire Weeks's work and appreciate that I understand and apply it in our coaching sessions. Learn more about your ad choices. We start by reflecting on a powerful quote from Eleanor Roosevelt about facing fear head-on and deriving strength from those experiences. The host, Gina Ryan, stresses the importance of not letting panic attacks intimidate us, but rather confronting them directly. Panic attacks can be incredibly overwhelming, especially for individuals with anxiety or panic disorder. Ryan explains that having a panic attack first aid kit can be a valuable resource in managing and navigating these episodes. She goes on to describe the common symptoms of panic attacks, such as rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, trembling, and the fear of losing control. Although panic attacks may feel never-ending, Ryan reassures listeners that they typically last for a relatively short period of time. To construct an effective panic attack first aid kit, Ryan advises listeners to incorporate resources and techniques from the Anxiety Coaches Podcast. She emphasizes the importance of educating oneself about panic attacks, highlighting the fact that they are not life-threatening and will eventually pass. Ryan suggests utilizing relaxation techniques, grounding methods, and sensory stimulation to activate the parasympathetic nervous system. By slowing down and signaling to the brain that everything is okay, individuals can help counteract the fear hormone cascade that occurs during a panic attack. However, Ryan makes it clear that a panic attack first aid kit is not intended to be a permanent solution, but rather a valuable tool to rely on in times of need. Furthermore, she recommends having easily accessible water and snacks, particularly if hunger or prolonged periods without eating are factors. It is crucial to eat during a panic attack, as plummeting blood sugar can mimic the symptoms of anxiety. By addressing this drop in blood sugar, individuals can prevent the release of cortisol, which can exacerbate feelings of anxiety. Carrying water and non-perishable snacks like granola bars or nuts is a practical way to combat dehydration and low blood sugar during a panic attack. Learn more about your ad choices. She emphasizes that this issue should be approached from a health standpoint rather than a moral perspective. Ryan highlights several scenarios in which anxiety can arise from alcohol, including cravings for a drink, social pressures, feelings of guilt or regret from past experiences, and concerns about physical and mental health. She points out that even after the alcohol has left the body, anxiety can linger. Ryan also delves into the impact of alcohol on cortisol levels, a stress hormone, both during and after drinking. To further educate listeners, she recommends checking out Dr. Andrew Huberman's podcast for more in-depth information on the topic. Ultimately, Ryan's goal is to shed light on the connection between alcohol and anxiety and provide strategies for effectively managing it. During this segment of the podcast, I delve into the effects of alcohol on cortisol levels and stress. I explain that initially, alcohol can suppress the release of cortisol, creating a sense of relaxation and reduced stress. However, as the alcohol begins to leave the system, there is a rebound effect, leading to an increase in cortisol levels. Additionally, alcohol can disrupt sleep, which further contributes to elevated cortisol levels. Individuals struggling with alcohol use disorders may experience chronic stress and anxiety, resulting in prolonged elevation of cortisol levels, even during periods of not actively drinking. Withdrawal from alcohol can also intensify stress levels and anxiety, resulting in withdrawal symptoms like panic attacks. To mitigate the impact of alcohol on cortisol levels, I suggest individuals limit their alcohol consumption and incorporate stress reduction techniques such as exercise, meditation, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. We begin by acknowledging the healing power that resides within each of us, as emphasized by Hippocrates. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine take a holistic approach to anxiety, seeking to restore balance and harmony throughout the body. While everyone's experiences may differ, I, Gina Ryan, personally share my positive experiences with acupuncture for smoke-induced asthma. I delve into the ways in which acupuncture and Chinese medicine can effectively address anxiety. Through stimulating the flow of energy within the body, acupuncture promotes relaxation of both the mind and body. This, in turn, reduces stress hormones, improves the quality of sleep, and shifts the body from the fight or flight response to a restful and digestive state. Acupuncture also encourages mindfulness and fosters mind-body connection, aiding in pain reduction and promoting overall well-being. The treatments themselves are personalized, tailored to each individual's specific patterns of disharmony. By targeting the factors contributing to stress and anxiety, these treatments promote relaxation and balance. According to traditional Chinese medicine, the body's vital energy, known as Qi, flows through pathways called meridians. Blockages or imbalances in this flow can lead to physical or emotional health issues. Acupuncture stimulates specific points along these meridians, regulating and facilitating the flow of Qi while removing blockages. By doing so, balance is restored, as traditional Chinese medicine places great emphasis on maintaining equilibrium within the body. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

She begins by expressing gratitude for the concern shown by listeners regarding the fires in Maui and Big Island, assuring everyone that she is safe and sending thoughts and prayers to those affected. Gina emphasizes the importance of reminding ourselves that we can handle whatever comes our way and not borrowing suffering from the future by worrying about things that may never happen. She highlights the fact that most of what we worry about never materializes, and unexpected events occur instead. Therefore, it's crucial to focus on what we can control and let go of the outcome. Excessive mind chatter drains our energy, both in the subconscious and when we consciously feed it with present moment thoughts. This mental chatter builds up in the body, especially during long periods of inactivity, and adds another layer to our fears and anxieties, resulting in physical discomfort. To break this cycle, Gina suggests changing our thoughts and interrupting the fear-adrenaline-fear cycle through the body. Unlike mental practices, the body responds immediately in the moment. By consciously shifting different parts of our bodies, we can send positive affirmations to the brain and signal to the amygdala that all is well, reducing its hyperactivity. As host Gina Ryan emphasizes, it's crucial to tackle those small stressors that may accumulate and diminish our ability to enjoy life fully. First and foremost, we discuss the significance of becoming more organized and reducing clutter. Doing so can alleviate the mental burden and free up our internal resources. Another effective strategy is making a list of tasks that need to be accomplished and actively addressing them. In this way, we can effectively manage stress and avoid feeling overwhelmed. Addressing nuisances is also essential. We're encouraged to compile a list of things that annoy us and create a plan to tackle them head-on. In doing so, we eliminate constant sources of stress and bring more ease into our lives. While relaxation time often takes a backseat, the importance of scheduling it cannot be stressed enough. Engaging in activities that relax and rejuvenate us is vital for our overall well-being. Taking short breaks throughout the day for stretches or mini meditations can effectively relieve tension and provide us with renewed energy. Evaluating our relationships is another way to minimize stress. We're urged to assess which relationships need improvement, which can be let go, and which require more attention. This helps create healthier dynamics that alleviate stress in our interpersonal connections. Lastly, we explore the impact of our jobs on our stress levels. Making changes is crucial in this aspect, whether it's updating your resume and exploring new job opportunities or setting boundaries and expressing your needs in your current workplace. For stay-at-home parents, seeking help and establishing firmer boundaries may be necessary. Retirement is an option worth considering, and if finances require it, taking on additional work or starting a side gig or business might be beneficial. Recognizing even the smallest stressors within our careers or jobs is important, as collectively they can significantly impact our overall well-being. Learn more about your ad choices. The topic stems from a listener question about health anxiety and the fear of developing dementia or Alzheimer's. Gina acknowledges that anxiety often lands on what we care about most and can lead to worrying about potential damage caused by stress and past substance abuse. Gina delves into specific ways the body can heal and recover, such as neuroplasticity, neurogenesis, reduced inflammation, restoration of neurotransmitter balance, and enhanced blood flow and oxygenation. Stress and alcohol abuse may disrupt the brain's neural connections and neurotransmitter balance, but the brain has the incredible capacity to reorganize and form new connections. Furthermore, reducing stress and alcohol consumption can decrease inflammation in the brain, promoting healing and restoration. Regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle also aid in improving blood flow and oxygenation, supporting the brain healing process. Gina proceeds to discuss the manifestations of health anxiety, including excessive worrying about sickness or injury, frequent body checking, seeking reassurance from others, obsessive online searches, and avoiding anything related to serious illness. She advises against relying on internet searches and instead encourages seeking guidance from healthcare professionals or waiting to see if symptoms persist. Additionally, she highlights the common tendency to avoid activities out of fear and mistake anxiety symptoms for signs of illness. Keeping a journal to track behaviors such as body checking, reassurance seeking, and online searching can help reduce these habits over time. The main takeaway is to be mindful of thoughts about one's health and not give in to every fleeting worry. With practice, old habits can be broken, and a better mental state can be achieved. Gina concludes the episode by quoting Bryant McGill, reminding listeners that a calm mind is their ultimate weapon against challenges. She signs off with a farewell and best wishes until the next podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this episode, the host Gina Ryan speaks in-depth about the power of metaphors when managing anxiety. She outlines how these metaphors allow us to externalize anxiety from our sense of self, which allows us to view our anxiety from a different, more constructive perspective. Ryan also explains how using metaphors can simplify anxiety, create a connection with personal experiences, facilitate communication and expression, and stimulate creative problem-solving. To drive her point home, the speaker offers her own metaphor of anxiety as a mountain. She describes how the jagged peaks of the mountain represent worries, doubts, and fears that can be almost insurmountable. As individuals climb higher and overcome obstacles, they gain a new perspective and emerge stronger on the other side. By visualizing anxiety as a mountain to conquer, the speaker urges her listeners to see anxiety as a challenge to be faced and embraced, rather than something to be fought and avoided. Furthermore, the metaphorical mountain can become a catalyst for growth and self-discovery, transforming anxiety into an opportunity for personal development. In the podcast, Ryan encourages her listeners to create their own metaphors for anxiety and to share them with others. She hopes that her words will provide guidance and comfort to those struggling with anxiety and enable them to view their anxiety from a new perspective. Overall, this podcast offers an insightful and empowering approach to managing anxiety through the use of metaphors. Because as we cultivate that, we begin to realize that we are not our thoughts. We have thoughts. 15:34: Exercise is so important and it gets left out a lot, when we're talking about mental health. A lot of times people just think it's about thinking, and again, we bring the body in. A healthy body is where a healthy mind can reside and we have to pay attention to ourselves as a whole.18:04: And we don't need to go into perfection with our food either. Doesn't need to go one way or the other, but we can begin to make friends with our eating and to take things out such as sugar.18:53: But when you are struggling with your nervous system being jacked up all day because of what you are thinking, the last thing you want to do is sip on something that releases those same stress hormones.22:32: It's not about the food, but it's not not about the food. 25:12: I think women were much more, at least in my experience, much more open to talking about it and getting help for it. So I think there's a lot of men out there not receiving the help that they need.Dear Mind, You Matter is brought to you by NOBU, a new mental health, and wellness app. To download NOBU, visit the app store or Google Play. This podcast is hosted by Allison Walsh  and Dr. Angela Phillips. Today we're delighted to have the host of the anxiety coaches podcast. Gina is the producer of the top 50 mental health show on Apple Podcasts, and is a nutritionist and coach. She struggled with stress, anxiety, and panic for over 20 years, but was able to climb out of her fear and panic to peace, calm, and well-being by finding out what worked for her. We discuss what anxiety is, where it comes from, and why you might struggle with it. Finding the right therapist can be difficult, Gina suggests meeting with a therapist 2 or 3 times, having a conversation with them, and then making your own assessment as to how you should move forward. Practicing mindfulness is an important part of managing your anxiety by just having a non judgmental view of thoughts and just letting them be. Being OK with noticing it and acknowledging those thoughts, but not letting them define us. We also talk about how to handle someone else's anxiety and not make it worse. This is the long lost episode resurrected! I had this wonderful conversation with Gina Ryan back in March and had a tech issue with a lost recording. It has been recovered and I am overjoyed to share this episode with all of you. Gina Ryan is the producer and host of the top 50 Mental Health show on Apple Podcast -The Anxiety Coaches Podcast. Gina is a Nutritionist and coach who in 1993 opened New Health Natural Products in NY and also struggled with stress, anxiety, and panic for over 20 years. Before the internet, she was able to climb out of her fear and panic to peace, calm, and well-being by finding what did and what didn’t work. She now teaches thousands of others how to do the same in a fraction of the time. Gina openly shares her own journey with anxiety and how she now lives her life with a sense of calm and purpose. She shares with us some techniques that work for calming anxiety, and we have a lovely conversation about body based techniques. After moving to Maui in 2005, Gina spent 12 years as a nutritionist/consultant for both the Intensive Outpatient Eating Disorder Center and the only Residential ED Facility in Hawaii sharing her compassion along with her knowledge and wisdom of the mind-body and spirit connection helping clients clear their food-related anxiety, obsessions, and compulsions. Gina is currently dedicated full time to anxiety-clearing coaching, writing, and teaching clients around the world. She considers her work her calling and lives a mindful and compassionate life. This is a beautiful episode with calming energy all over town, and wonderful advice! I begin this episode by sharing a quick, thoughtful exercise that’s useful when you’re tired of chasing your tail with anxious, fraught thinking. It’s called “A Codependent’s Checklist for Navigating Hard Times”, Here are some of the questions I asked in the essay: ☐ Am I being preachy? ☐ Am I being ‘helpful’? ☐ Am I being charming for my own gain? ☐ Am I trying to force a solution? ☐ Am I zoned out and trying to avoid reality? ☐ Do I feel unsafe? ☐ Have I asked for help if I need it? ☐ Have I forgotten I’m not in charge? ☐ Do I still think I can figure my way out of this mess? ☐ Have I forgotten to meet my own needs? ☐ What do I actually need right now? ☐ What am I afraid of right now? Why not pull out a notebook and give these questions a shot. They don’t have to take long at all … you do know the answers, I assure you. While we’re at it, do you want to deal with your anxiety? Gina Ryan, host of The Anxiety Coaches podcast has your back in this episode’s interview. As a nutritionist and anxiety thought leader in Maui, Hawaii, she finds many subtle and important connections between food, anxiety and our general level of well-being. But that’s not all … Gina and I got into all sorts of interesting material here. Among other things, we covered: The important connection between anxiety and food Why do we eat from boredom? How to override the usual snack cues How to manage anxiety throughout the day The impact of screen time on anxiety Repressed grief and its impact on anxiety Some anxiety soothers you can implement right now. Enjoy … And, hey, don’t forget to breathe! RESOURCES The Anxiety Coaches podcast More About Gina Gina is an Anxiety Coach and Nutritionist who struggled with general anxiety, panic and agoraphobia for over 20 years. She is also host of The Anxiety Coaches podcast. Gina consults as the nutritionist for Hawaii's only residential Eating Disorder Center and was the nutritionist for an Intensive Outpatient Center for 8 years. Using her knowledge and wisdom of the mind-body and spirit to help clients clear their food related anxiety, obsessions and compulsions.

Yet again we have decided to cover an 80’s cult classic and this time a personal favorite of co-host Corey. Now this came about due to the fact that Gina & Ryan have never seen this movie before and sadly seems to be a common trend. While a lot of people have seen this true gem of the 80’s, there are a lot more people who haven’t. So in an attempt to bring more awareness to it’s greatness we have decided to discuss none other than 1987’s ‘The Monster Squad.’ The film is centered around a group of young kids who form a club that is devoted to monsters. They soon get more than they bargained for when Count Dracula, accompanied by Frankenstein’s Monster, the Wolfman, the Mummy, and the Gillman, is in search of a powerful amulet that will grant them power to rule the world.
