Welcome to our marathon of 50 Over 50 Podcaster award winners! Today's episode is one of 19 story hosted by Cheryl Holling The guest, Christy Harst,(that originally aired in May of 2024), has been heard on the World Series, Monday Night Football, and the NBA Finals as one of the national voices of YouTubeTV. She's also the national voice of John Deere, and has voiced dozens of television, streaming, and radio ads. Her career in voiceover began in college when she applied for a news internship at a local classical radio station. It was during her interview that the station manager told her she had a good voice, escorted her to the studio, recorded her reading the Star Spangled Banner and then suggested, “You'd do well in voice overs.” Two decades later, Christy is in fact “doing well” and continues to work from her home based professional studio. She loves and excels at what she does and it shows in her body of work. Plus, she's the only one I know that has ever voiced about the dangers of Bed Bug Mating! Christy grew up in a rural town an hour outside of Cleveland, competed in cooking and public speaking as part of the 4-H program. After graduating college Christy experienced several terrifying situations, including being robbed in her first post-graduate job. And five years ago she suffered a mild stroke. Christy, by any measure, has been successful in the world of VO, and yet she is on a mission to change the sound of a genre of voiceover that for too long has been dominated by men in the world of sports promos. Her Building Doors campaign seeks to literally change the narrative of sports promos by demanding equal opportunities for female voice actors not just in sports, but in male centric brands as well. Her goal is that the door will be built and always remain open. She's even curated a personal YouTube appeal to her beloved Cleveland Browns to be their secret weapon by being their “first female voice to break through the noise!” To give feedback or a story idea: 19stories@soundsatchelstudios.com To listen to Cheryl's demos or other podcast episodes: https://www.cherylholling.com/ Follow me on Instagram: @cherylhollingvo Thank you for joining us today! Welcome fabulous! Do you struggle with gratitude? What about gratitude for tough things today's guest is the perfect example of being perfectly imperfect on his quest for gratitude. He's incredibly open and honest about his journey. Let's Talk Tough Stuff—And Grace Michael Herst's background? It's the stuff of movies. Retired police sergeant, injured in the line of duty, forced to reinvent himself after a career was yanked away. IHere's the twist though: the journey became about finding a new purpose beyond the badge. “It allowed me to redirect my purpose in life,” he shares. And as casual as that sounds, the weight behind those words is real. Support Systems Aren't Just Fluffy Self-Help Talk Michael doesn't go solo on this journey. We're talking family, friends, colleagues—an entire community intent on not letting him spiral. “They give you a positive atmosphere, which makes it easy to start working your way out of that,” he says. Yogi points out something so true: finding those people, those honest-to-goodness support systems, is transformative but so many struggle to reach out. And Michael nails it: in the digital age, we're more “connected” but less truly close. Texting “I love you” isn't the same as actually saying it, feeling it, living it. Cooking Up Memories—And Healing The also talk Italian feasts and the power of the dinner table. Michael's fondest memories are simple: everyone around the table, food from every region, stories flying, laughter echoing. “It's a chance for conversation and it's a chance to relive those memories, which I think are important because it keeps the generations alive.” Cooking isn't just about the food—it's about connection, building bridges between past and present, healing by keeping family stories alive. Generational Trauma Is Real—But Doesn't Have to Be Forever Michael goes all in, opening up about his own childhood with alcoholic parents and deep family dysfunction. The kicker? He made a vow to himself: he'd break that cycle. Forgiveness didn't come easy, but understanding did as he dug into his family history during recovery. The huge takeaway? Healing yourself often means forgiving your past—and doing better for those who come after. Thank you for joining us today! What Susan Shapiro Taught Me About Forgiveness – Reflections from the Podcast Marathon If you've been listening along during our podcast marathon, you know how much I adore sharing episodes from our 50 Over 50 Podcaster Award winners. What a delight it's been—especially today, as I got to highlight the wisdom of my friend (and all-around powerhouse), Maria Leonard Olson. Let me set the scene: Maria's podcast, “Becoming Your Best Version,” shone in today's episode. But what made it especially fascinating was the presence of Susan Shapiro, a specialist in forgiveness whose perspective genuinely caught me off guard. For me, “forgive and forget” has always been a sort of background music—something we're taught from day one as little girls, almost like it's non-negotiable. I thought I'd already exhausted this topic after decades of living and learning, but wow, was I in for a revelation. Not All Forgiveness is Created Equal Susan's view is refreshingly real. She points out that forgiveness, especially the “radical” kind the self-help world is so fond of pushing, isn't always the healthiest route. Sometimes we thrive precisely because we don't let things go, using that fire to drive us forward. Can you imagine that? She actually shared stories of people who chose not to forgive—and found healing and strength in honoring their boundaries rather than endlessly turning the other cheek. Artificial intelligence has come a long way over just the past few years. It can hold conversations and manage social media, it can create art and edit videos, and it can even write blogs (though not this one). Every aspect of our lives has been touched by AI in one way or another, and that's particularly true for sound. While many podcasters, including some of my guests, now use AI tools for research and sound editing, it's also front and center in sound, from cloning voices to writing its own songs. Royalty-free music is already starting to give way to copyright-free AI music, and a variety of powerful audio content generation tools are scheduled for release later this year. But can computers replace human composers? Will listeners be able to tell the difference? And how did we get from vinyl records to virtual music? Where did this start, how is it going, and where will it progress into the future? For the full show notes including video examples of what's discussed, visit: https://voiceoversandvocals.com/blog/research-technology/uncanny-audio-is-ai-generated-content-music-to-our-ears/ And you'll find the Audio Branding Podcast at https://audiobrandingpodcast.cous Thank you for joining me today! There's something magical about celebrating passionate, powerful, and wise people over 50. That's why I founded the 50 Over 50 Podcaster Awards—to shine a spotlight on the phenomenal creators redefining what it means to be vibrant and influential in the second half of life. As the host of “Fabulous Over 50,” I'm constantly inspired by the stories my peers are sharing with the world. So, to honor this year's outstanding winners, I've invited each one to showcase their favorite podcast episode right here on the show. Today, I'm beyond excited to introduce you to one of our award winners—Claudia Noriega Bernstein, the extraordinary host of the award-winning podcast, “Don't Shrink to Fit.” Why This Episode Matters When I saw she had chosen her solo episode about growing up with a narcissistic parent, I felt a rush of anticipation. I knew her story and insights would resonate with so many listeners—myself included. “Mother's Day just passed,” Claudia shares in her episode, “and while it's a beautiful time to celebrate, it's also a complicated, even triggering, time for those of us who didn't get the nurturing we truly needed.” That single sentence had me hooked—and I know it will move you too. It takes courage to open up about the deep, lingering wounds that come from having a parent unable to give true empathy or unconditional love. Claudia's vulnerability, honesty, and wisdom shine as she talks about the real-life impact of narcissistic parenting: the self-doubt, the endless “people pleasing,” and the yearning to feel truly seen and heard. Her message is profoundly healing—especially for those of us who have had to do the hard work of reparenting ourselves later in life. Thank you for joining me today! I'm having a blast creating Fabulous Over 50 & it would be an honor to have you share it with someone who would enjoy it. Thank you! Want more? Childhood friends Linda Sawyer and Alison Matz prove that lifelong partnerships can create revolutionary businesses. After meeting at age seven during a second-grade spelling bee, these two women built impressive corporate careers—Linda as chairman of Deutsch advertising agency and Alison in publisher roles at Condé Nast and Meredith—before pivoting to entrepreneurship in their second act. Their frustration with ugly, bacteria-laden kitchen sponges sparked the creation of Skura Style, a disruptor brand that's transforming the $2 billion cleaning products industry with antimicrobial sponges that fade to indicate when it's time to replace them. What started as a passion project between two perfectionist friends has evolved into a premium brand partnership with actress Eva Mendes, who discovered their products during the pandemic and became a co-owner. Linda and Alison share candid insights about transitioning from corporate executives to hands-on entrepreneurs, the challenges of raising money as women, and why you can't have it all simultaneously—but you can build a "portfolio of experiences" that creates fulfilling career chapters. Their story offers inspiration for female business partnerships and practical advice for anyone considering an entrepreneurial leap later in life. Hello Fabulous!Jen Hardy here. Wow, what a journey it's been! Let me take you back a bit to 2018—a time my doctors believed would be my final year on this beautiful planet. Here I am, breathing and walking on my own, almost hitting 2025! If that's not a miracle, I don't know what is.I figured it was high time I introduced myself properly to my new audience, fans, and friends. Hello Fabulous! It's Jen, back with another chat with Judge Boyd! And did we cover a lot of ground in this chat - everything from the trials of parenting to the timeless joy of snapping Polaroid pictures!Judge Boyd had us laughing and nodding in agreement as she shared her love for gardening, future travel dreams, and a wish for singing abilities that sadly don't extend past the shower. (I can relate, there's a reason Shower Thoughts are only spoken) But her love for reading and advocating for bringing back good old-fashioned kindness made love her even more.On a more profound note, Judge Boyd's journey through the legal labyrinth was truly inspiring. She spoke candidly about her choice to attend Saint Mary's in San Antonio (despite a tempting offer from Pepperdine) and how her faith guided every pivotal life decision. Judge Boyd Texas is exactly the perfect courtroom for her. Her reflections on representing clients against all odds and maintaining decorum in the courtroom were eye-opening. And she had some fabulous advice for those who need to go to court, be sure to listen and find out!You can also go to jenhardy.net and read along with the transcript
Hello Fabulous!Jen here, and do I have a treat for you today! I just had an absolutely enlightening chat with the fabulous Julie Menanno. If you don't already know her, she's a relationship guru specializing in emotionally focused therapy (EFT), attachment theory, and the fine art of turning relationship chaos into secure love.Discover more at jenhardy.net Julie broke it down for us: Most of her couples—about 90%—fall into this “anxious-avoidant” tango. One partner's basically a golden retriever, desperate for constant affection, while the other is a turtle, retreating into their shell to avoid all that emotional messiness. Sound familiar?Julie also tackled the big, scary jungle that is finding a good therapist. Spoiler alert: It's like hunting for a unicorn. Emotionally focused therapy is where it's at, but mastering it is no small feat. Luckily, Julie's team operates as coaches and tackles issues across state lines (no magic carpet needed).(more "Anxious to Secure Relationship with Julie Menanno continued on JenHardy.net)You can find Julie Menanno and her secure relationship advice in the following places:Julie's Podcast- The Secure Love Podcast:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-secure-love-podcast-with-julie-menanno/id1753342452Julie's Nationally Bestselling Book- Secure Love: (US Version) https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Secure-Love/Julie-Menanno/9781668012864(UK Version) https://www.amazon.co.uk/Secure-Love-Create-Relationship-Lifetime/dp/1529902967/?maas=maas_adg_8DB247C73AC7406FC4472B1FB42F4B47_afap_abs&ref_=aa_maas&tag=maasWebsite:https://www.thesecurerelationship.com/Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/thesecurerelationship/

Nicole, who's a psychotherapist and expert in eating disorders, will blow your mind with her insights on finding deep meaning, nurturing a positive relationship with food and your body, and surrounding yourself with positive vibes. Plus, she's got some brilliant recommendations for reading, like Rebecca Scitchfield's "Body Kindness" and the self-compassion movement by Kristin Neff. If you've ever found yourself wrestling with the high stakes of people-pleasing, marriage, or just living life fabulously after fifty, this episode is for you. I had the absolute joy of chatting with the remarkable Ann Leary, who has managed to pack all these subjects and more into her latest collection of essays, "I've Tried Being Nice." Think you can resist a book with an essay about a passive-aggressive showdown over off-leash dogs? Think again! Ann dives deep into her personal experiences—childhood, marriage, and even her tennis obsession. Spoiler alert: tennis may have saved her marriage, and also might save your next awkwardly long family holiday. We laughed, we nearly cried, and if I'm honest, mostly we laughed. Ann's candidness about her struggles with people-pleasing gave us all the giggles. Who knew that a confrontation over dogs could reveal so much about human nature? And if that's not enough, we touched on the delights of aging, the beauty of Italy, and her hilarious misadventures with ballroom dancing classes alongside her husband, Denis Leary. Yes, there was a Russian dance instructor involved, and yes, it was as entertaining as it sounds. So grab a cup of coffee (or maybe a glass of wine), and tune in to hear Ann's wonderful stories. And don't forget to check out her new book—I promise you, it's a page-turner you won't want to miss!

Hello Fabulous! So, I recently had the absolute delight of sitting down with the one and only Sasha Gray, and let me just say - if joy were a person, it would definitely be her, decked out in glitter, no less! From the moment Sasha flashed that wise and winsome smile of hers, I knew we were in for a treat.First off, can we talk about how the world has become a glitter-bomb of isolation since 2020? Sasha and I dug right into that. It's like one day we're all bopping to mall music and the next, we're mastering the mute button on Zoom calls. Sasha shared her thoughts on how, even though platforms like Zoom and social media live streams have been lifesavers, nothing can truly replace the warmth of human connection. And, do I agree! Now, onto my favorite part - Sasha's Glitter and Grace Club. Yes, it is as fabulous as it sounds. Sasha has created this oasis of girl power where mainly women (and the occasional brave soul of a man) gather to talk about everything from fashion disasters to deep emotional support. And by the way, if you ever see me there, it's probably because I snuck in to sneak some of that glitter! You can hear all about the rest in the episode.Love,JenThank you for joining me today!I'm having a blast creating Fabulous Over 50 & it would be an honor to have you share it with someone who would enjoy it. Hello Fabulous! It's Jen here, and boy, do I have a story for you! Judge Rosie Speedlin Gonzalez is one heck of a rebellious spirit setting the courtroom! And let's just say, she's not your typical judge.First off, Judge Rosie rolls into the frame, and yeah, she sports tattoos. Now, before you go raising eyebrows, know this: each ink on her skin has a story, deeply rooted in connection and memory, especially her bonds with her father. Now that's a family album you can't just flip through! We dove headfirst into the harsh world of modern information access. Picture this: a world where kids wield smartphones like they're extensions of their hands. Judge Rosie, laying down the law as she does best, campaigned for no phones till kids hit sixteen. Stern? Maybe. Wise? Definitely. Her court isn't the usual "all rise, all sit, judgment passed, go home."Imagine a place where instead of the doom of the gavel, you get a path paved towards real change. Bexar County's specialty courts have been her stage, directing spotlights on drug treatment and addiction—issues that hit hard and ruin silently. Under her guidance, 27 out of 28 graduates stayed on the straight and narrow. If that's not winning, I don't know what is!From discussing tech's role in transparency to sporting a pride flag as a beacon of equality in San Antonio, Judge Rosie doesn't just push boundaries—she redraws them. She's faced down disciplinary actions for her support of the LGBTQ+ community, an ordeal that only steeled her resolve. That pride flag now sits right outside her chambers, a testament to her fight and identity.Cheers to our robed rebel, and to all of us living unapologetically and making each moment in the courtroom, or anywhere else, profoundly ours.Until next time,Jen Let's Connect!!JenHardy.netFacebookInstagramLinkedInFind Judge Rosie's video on the Reflejo Court here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnSPuEMSwTU
Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I call upon your undivided attention! Our latest episode took us into the world of courtrooms, butter vs. mayo debates, and the unexpected rise to YouTube stardom. Our guest, Colin— who's definitely not Cromwell (just ask the Irish Demon)—graced us with tales from his channel that has managed to capture the peculiar charm of Lady Justice in action. Hello Fabulous! Welcome to our new series - a deep dive into the American Justice System. We're gonna start with a little bit of humor, and I would love it if you would submit all of your questions and concerns about our legal system as well as the people you'd like me to interview. I would absolutely love your input! It's time to dive into the wonderfully wacky world of American laws. Let's cut to the chase: America has some pretty strange rules on the books, and I'm here to dish out the details. First up, if you're craving bear claws while wandering the wilds of Maine, stick to the pastry kind, my friend. Actual bear claws? Down in Florida, where I reside among the eternal sunshine, there's a law that's music to no one's ears – singing off-key in your bathing suit is a big no-no. So, when in Florida, make sure those vocal cords are as finely tuned as your suntan. And don't even think about a melodic dip in the pool unless your pitch is perfect. Hello fabulous friends! Buckle up your seatbelts (or should I say your most fashionable belts) because we're about to dive into the wisdom pool with none other than Judge Stephanie Boyd. Judge Boyd kicks things off with a nostalgic trip down memory lane, back to her roots in Shreveport, Louisiana. Apparently, this judge was once a little hustler, earning her keep with good old-fashioned chores. Who knew yard work could lead to the bench? I can barely get my petunias to bloom on time. Boyd's escapades were all about a carefree childhood and the kind of positive vibes that we all wish we could bottle up and spritz on during those less-than-stellar days. We also didn't shy away from getting deep, pondering the big ideas like positive influence, positive parenting, and the art of not messing up your kids. It's all about drawing the line between oops-a-daisy and 'I meant to do that'—like remembering (or forgetting) your umbrella when the forecast screams rain. Speaking of forecasts, Judge Boyd and I have weathered our own personal storms, with their houses turning into indoor pools (I mean, floods, not the fun kind). Boyd's been camping out in a hotel since October and spilled the tea on hose maintenance (every 10 years, folks—put it in your calendars now). And because no chat is complete without some self-love, we talk about aging like fine wine and learning to say no more than a toddler. Hydration with fancy cups and straws? Check. Skincare routines that would make a K-beauty guru bow down? Double-check. Judge Boyd's even got a flower-and-purse ritual to remind us to treat ourselves, because let's face it, we deserve it. Now, let's get real for a sec. The world's not all rainbows and bookfests, and Judge Boyd's career reminds us of that. She's worn the defense attorney hat, represented kiddos in CPS cases, and is a huge advocate for treating everyone with kindness in the courtroom. She's not just there to lay down the law; she's there to listen, to understand, and to treat people as, well, people. Our fabulousJudge Boyd also drops some knowledge about transparency in the courts and utilizing platforms like YouTube to let people have a peek into the legal system. In conclusion, kids need boundaries, fiestas need medals, and we all need a little Paris in our lives (apparently, it's not as pricey as one would think!). As we usher out Judge Boyd from this enlightening episode, we're left with a gentle reminder: life's about the choices we make, the umbrellas we forget, and the wisdom to know when to grab a cup of water or a fancy straw. Hello, my fabulous fashionistas! Welcome back to the "Fabulous Over Fifty" podcast! I'm your host, Jen Hardy, and let me tell you, today's episode with the divine Nancy Queen, the reigning monarch of minimalist wardrobes, was both enlightening and, dare I say, life-changing! She is the star of "Shopping on Champagne" on YouTube. Nancy opened up about her escapades in the fashion world, all from the comfort of her temporary East Coast command center, thanks to caring for her dad. And yes, despite the chaos, Nancy's surroundings were as stylish as the advice she dished out – No cluttered backgrounds or fashion faux pas in sight! Let's talk about the real runway show here: our closets. As we dove into the concept of capsule wardrobes, it became apparent that my own closet was the equivalent of ‘Where's Waldo?' – too many pieces with nowhere to be found purpose! Nancy's approach, by contrast, is like food shopping with a laser-focused grocery list – intentional, strategic, and leaving no room for those impulsive buys (looking at you, neon legwarmers from 1985). Her idea of "style words" and her passion for helping women find their personal fashion identity resonated with me; I could almost hear my eclectic collection of scarves sobbing as they realized their days were numbered. So sit back, or better yet, stand in front of your closet with a critical eye, and get ready to be inspired. Trust me, whether you're a seasoned fashion enthusiast or someone whose idea of a wild day is choosing the shirt that doesn't have coffee stains, this episode has something for everyone. Hello Fabulous!! I don't know about you, but I love gadgets. I've always been into tech, since I was a kid. I remember when we brought home that shiny new apple to Computer. Little did we know that it was a dud, but it seems cutting edge of the time, and we were so excited! But now we've transformed our gadgets from mere tools to almost sentient companions that could give your pet a run for its money. There's a fine, sometimes nefarious line between convenience and dependency, where these smart devices learn our habits faster than we do theirs. We're sliding into an era where your coffee machine not only knows your preferred brew but also questions your life choices if you reach for that third cup. Today we're talking about the top 3 ways you can have issues, and how to lock your tech down to save yourself some headaches. Listen for more! Thank you for joining me today! Greetings fabulous! Today we dive into the glittering world of personal branding with none other than the punk-rock-spirited CPA, Heather Zeitzwolfe. Between shared technical snafus involving the mysterious entity that is Zoom and confessing our collective affinity for AppSumo deals (they really should start sponsoring us at this point), we spent more time laughing than I ever have during an episode! And yes, that image of us decked out in sequins and leather while balancing our checkbooks is 100% accurate - our personal brands are all about shining bright and rocking out, no matter what the ledger says. So pull up your favorite chair, slap on some of that old-school eyeliner if you're feelin' it, and get ready for an episode that juggles everything from our punk days listening to Social Distortion to the taxing conundrums of being an Amazon Vine reviewer (who knew reviewing could be so, well, taxable?). Heather not only brought down the house with her tales of spicing up the CPA world with a dash of rebellion, but she also gave us a peek behind the velvet curtain of personal reinvention. Trust me, whether you're a rockstar at heart or a glitter enthusiast, finding your personal brand over fifty isn't just possible—it's a downright hoot. Let's crank up the volume and celebrate the fabulous, misfit anthems of our lives. Thank you for joining us today! "There's a fine line between glittery and tacky. Very fine line. I try to stay on the correct side of that line. I am quite sure that I pass it often." - Jen Hardy Hello fabulous! My mom always said that glitter is the herpes of the craft world! The more I think about it, the more it makes sense. Like herpes, glitter just doesn't seem to go away. But now that I'm over 50, I've decided to embrace the sparkle. And you know what? It's working! People are too busy noticing the glitter to pay much attention to the wrinkles. So, why not throw a little sparkle on those laugh lines? As I always say, if it sparkles, it's fabulous! Speaking of fabulous, I recently attended Podfest, and let me tell you, the struggle of getting ready in the morning is real. But I've discovered a secret that has changed the game for me. Get yourself a cute hat, bling it out, throw on a little lipstick, and voilà, you've got a glamorous look in no time. Who knew getting ready could be that simple? So whether you're rocking the glitter and sequins or just living that relaxed life, find what makes you feel fabulous and own it! Until next time, stay fabulous, my friends.
