In today's book club episode I'll be talking about the book Eating in the Light of the Moon: How Women Can Transform Their Relationship with Food Through Myths, Metaphors, and Storytelling by Dr. Anita Johnston. It has been a go-to resource in the field of eating disorder recovery since its original publication in 1996, and I found it so eye opening and helpful that I felt I had to give it special attention in the podcast and tell you a bit about what you can find within its pages. I can't recommend this book enough for anyone who has or is struggling with an eating disorder, for parents, siblings or partners of people with eating disorders, even for clinicians. Through stories and metaphors Anita guides us to the deeply rooted issues associated with our relationship to food, our grasping of disordered habits as a defense mechanism, and how the same folk tales that have been passed down from generation to generation can be used as tools to understand disordered eating and move towards a better relationship with food. In this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Jacqueline "Jaq” Sherman about her long journey recovering from bulimia. Jaq opened up about the roots of her eating disorder, tracing it back to difficult family dynamics in her childhood where she felt she couldn't use her voice. The bulimia started when she was 15 during her parents' divorce, and she turned to bingeing and purging as a way to cope with the turmoil and lack of control she felt.  Jaq was incredibly candid about the shame, self-hatred, and exhaustion that defined her years being gripped by bulimia. She tried multiple treatment centres and Overeaters Anonymous, but nothing seemed to fully work until she met her pivotal therapist Anita Johnston. Anita had Jaq track her binge/purge cycles to identify the underlying needs and feelings driving the behaviours. For Jaq, it always came back to not using her voice and feeling overwhelmed. Through hard work with Anita, Jaq slowly learned to speak up for herself, set boundaries, and meet her needs in healthier ways. She shared how self-compassion was key, even if she had to "fake it 'til she made it" at first. Jaq's resilience shone through as she recounted the many times she "fell down" with lapses but kept getting back up. Her life today is full - with a wonderful marriage, rewarding job, and true self-acceptance. Jaq's story offers so much hope that full recovery from an eating disorder is possible, even after years of struggle. Her wisdom about being patient yet persistent with yourself in recovery was inspiring. I was moved by Jaq's courage to share her imperfect yet transformative journey to self-love. Despite the countless diets and weight loss plans, the mental and emotional turmoil associated with food and body image remains unresolved for many. The real issue lies not in the food itself but in the deeper, often hidden emotional and psychological wounds that drive unhealthy eating behaviors. These underlying issues are like the submerged part of an iceberg—vast and largely unseen, yet crucial to understand and heal. Ignoring these deeper problems perpetuates a cycle of temporary fixes and long-term dissatisfaction. In this episode, we dive into Anita Johnston's "Eating in the Light of the Moon," a book that uses powerful metaphors to shed light on the complex relationship between food and emotions. By exploring stories like 'the log in the river', 'the red herring', 'the woman in the moon', 'the peasant quest', 'the princess and the pea', and 'the iceberg', we reveal how diet mentality distracts from true healing. Through these metaphors, we learn the importance of connecting with our inner wisdom and addressing the real issues beneath the surface. Join us as we uncover the path to true food freedom, where emotional mastery and self-empowerment replace the constant battle with diet mentality. By listening to this episode, you'll gain valuable insights and practical tools to start your journey toward a healthier, more fulfilling relationship with food and yourself. Today I'm talking to Dr. Anita Johnston Ph.D., Depth Psychologist, Certified Eating Disorder Specialist, and author of Eating in the Light of the Moon: How Women Can Transform Their Relationships with Food Through Myth, Metaphor and Storytelling, which has been published in seven languages. Dr. Anita was a pioneer in eating disorders therapy and has been treating eating difficulties and body image distress for over 35 years. She has developed eating disorder programs nationally and internationally and currently serves as Founder and Executive Director or Ai Pono Hawaii Eating Disorders Programs which has a residential program in Maui. Dr. Anita is very aware that as humans, we can understand complex concepts using metaphor in memorable ways – we love stories and relating this to real life. In society and in eating disorder recovery in general, we often use left brain, logical ways of healing, whereas engaging with our creativity and imagination engages the right brain, and for many people, this is where change actively occurs.  Dr, Anita is passionate about this. Cathy herself was introduced to the idea of self- compassion in eating disorders about a decade ago when she came across Josie Geller, a Canadian Psychologist, present at the Australian Eating Disorders Conference in Sydney. After watching such an inspirational speaker, learning about the power over self-compassion alongside evidence-based approaches, Cathy wanted to further explore compassion. This is when Cathy came across Kristen Neff, whose work she talks about on the podcast as greatly influencing her practice. Here today, Cathy has additionally taken to narrative approaches from Michael White and Anita Johnston who continually impact her practice in the way she uses metaphor, analogy and lived experience. So on that note, please welcome our next special guest, Cathy! Podcast summary: 1. Understanding compassion 2. Acknowledging eating disorders serve a function 3.  Being able to sooth ourselves 4. Episode 34: Dr. Anita Johnston joins me to discuss the root cause of disordered eating and how to heal through story and metaphor. I struggled with an eating disorder in high school. I couldn't afford therapy then and felt ashamed about asking for help. I felt like I should know better. So I spent my free time alone in the library, educating myself about healing and food's role in my life. I slowly untangled the knot inside me and went into complete remission. It was nice to chat openly about my shadow with Dr. Johnston. She is a wealth of information and offers skilled guidance to those who seek it. Anita Johnston, Ph.D., is a Depth Psychologist, Certified Eating Disorder Specialist, and author of Eating in the Light of the Moon: How Women Can Transform Their Relationships with Food Through Myths, Metaphors, and Storytelling, which has been published in seven languages. She is the co-creator of the Light of the Moon Café, an online resource with interactive and self-study courses for women around the world.A pioneer in the field of eating psychology for over thirty-five years, she is currently the Founder and Executive Clinical Director of Ai Pono Hawaii*, which has a residential eating disorder treatment program on Maui.Dr. Johnston provides virtual individual consultations and conducts workshops internationally. A lot of us use food to cope with feelings. And when I say “using food,” I mean that sometimes we eat certain foods in response to emotions, but I also mean that sometimes we restrict or withhold food in response to emotions. And sometimes we diet as a way to try and cope with how we are feeling. Often we don't even know we are doing this. These food and dieting behaviors become such a normalized part of our lives that we aren't even aware that we are using it to distract from or numb ourselves from feeling our feelings.    Emotional eating isn't a bad thing. We ALL do it sometimes, and that's perfectly normal. It can become a problem when emotional eating becomes the only way we have to cope, or when we are using it to avoid our feelings.    Our emotions aren't something we need to be afraid of. They serve an important purpose in terms of telling us what we need. With intuitive we can practice noticing our feelings, naming them and giving language to how we're feeling (which is sometimes harder than you think it will be because most of us weren't raised with a very good emotional vocabulary), and then we must learn how to cope with our feelings in ways that are more kind and compassionate towards ourselves.   I can't wait for you to listen!    Links Mentioned: Grab My FREE Breaking the Binge Cycle Worksheet Eating in the Light of the Moon by Anita Johnston, PhD

She has dedicated her career to helping people recover from disordered eating and the relationships we have with food, with our bodies. Having suffered – like many other young women – from disordered eating in her teenage years herself, Christina explores in her usual sensitive manner together with Dr. Anita Johnston the complexity of disordered eating and human sensitivity and what ways are available to us to address eating disorders. This episode guides us through the following points: Exploring the prevalence of disordered eating and its relationship to diet culture. Examining the sensitivity and intuition of individuals with disordered eating. Investigating the use of storytelling and metaphor as a way to address disordered eating. The commonalities of those with disordered eating in regard to sensitivity How we can limit external influences that may affect our body image  How  underlying societal stereotypes of gender roles and the expectations we have around those roles can contribute as cofactors What it actually means when people say they are in recovery for disordered eating We hope you enjoy this episode! Listen up and leave us a review and your feedback below! In our recent Summer bookworm episode I shared my absolute love for the book I'll be talking about in today's episode: Eating in the Light of the Moon: How Women Can Transform Their Relationship with Food Through Myths, Metaphors, and Storytelling by Dr. Anita Johnston. It has been a go-to resource in the field of eating disorder recovery since its original publication in 1996, and I found it so eye opening, helpful and healing that I felt I had to give it special attention in the podcast and tell you a bit about what you can find within its pages. I can't recommend this book enough for anyone who has or is struggling with an eating disorder, for parents, siblings or partners of people with eating disorders, or for anyone who like me, has struggled with eating, chronic dieting and disordered eating even when not fulfilling the criteria for a diagnosis. Through stories and metaphors Anita guides us to the deeply rooted issues associated with our relationship to food, our grasping of disordered habits as a defence mechanism, and how the same folk tales that have been passed down from generation to generation can be used as tools to understand disordered eating and move towards a better relationship with food. Have you ever thought that an obsession with food may have saved your sanity to some degree? I know that doesn't sound logical, but for those who have been there… they get it! Believe it or not, obsessing about food, calories, weight, grams, recipes, and food shows may be a way YOU protect yourself! Struggling with the frustration of food obsession may be less painful than addressing emotions related to troubles in your current relationship, trauma from issues in your parents' relationship, sadness about unresolved feelings about the loss of a loved one, anger related to previous abuse, fear about the amount of credit card debt you have accumulated over the past few years, or feeling overwhelmed with the combined stress of caring for ailing parents, the demands of a career, and the number of activities you need to get your children to every week. Food can be a “red herring,” something used to take your attention from something else, says Dr. Anita Johnston. Listen as I share remarkable information about this topic from Dr. Johnston's incredible book titled “Eating in the Light of the Moon.” Think about how this may relate to YOU and your obsession with food … More importantly, learn what to do about it! Please subscribe to the show and rate it on Apple Podcasts, download free information at www.conniestapletonphd.com, and follow me on Twitter (@cstapletonphd), Instagram (@cstapletonphd), YouTube, LinkedIn, and on Facebook.
