The restaurant industry is not for the faint of heart, especially if you're operating in college towns. When the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on the industry, many businesses closed and let their staff go. This week's guest did the exact opposite. Welcome to Building While Flying! This weekly podcast is brought to you by the Sasha Group. We're the small-to-medium-sized business arm of the VaynerX family of companies. We help ambitious companies build strong brands that flex with the times through strategy, branding, media, and marketing. In ever-changing times, businesses and brands have to shift and adapt. And across all sectors, there is an air of experimentation. Business owners are trying new things out in the wild; building the plane while flying. Our pilots, Katie Hankinson and Mickey Cloud, will be talking to a diverse range of business leaders and founders. They'll explore how these guests tackle various challenges while staying resilient and committed to growth. Through these real-life examples of strategies put into practice, we hope to inspire you to experiment and develop your own strategies as we all navigate these uncertain times together. Bret Oliverio is the owner and CEO of Sup Dogs, a high-energy college town restaurant, with two locations in Greenville and Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Sup Dogs was the pipe dream of Bret's older brother Derek. But after Derek passed away after a sudden accident in 2011, Bret and his wife quit their jobs to carry on Derek's legacy. After several years of growth, challenges, and success, they faced their toughest challenge yet: the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. In this week's episode, Bret tells Katie the origin story of Sup Dogs, and shares what it's like going into the restaurant industry with no background or experience. Most importantly, Bret breaks down the impact of the pandemic, beyond just the shift to takeout and delivery. He talks about his focus on his employees and staff, and making sure they were taken care of during this difficult time. He says that current staffing problems across the country are multifaceted and not due to just one factor. Lastly, he talks about what he sees in the future of the restaurant and service industry, and shares what other owners can do to stand out and retain great staff. Other in-flight topics: Sup Dogs' origin story Operating a restaurant in college towns Maintaining a strong brand How a background in radio helps in the restaurant industry Taking care of your employees during the pandemic Treating and paying your employees fairly and “better than ever” Challenges of hiring after the pandemic The future of the restaurant and service industry Links: Website: https://supdogs.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/supdogsrestaurant/ TikTok: @supdogsrestaurant

On today's episode -- a "bad business decision" that simply had to be made... and a microcosm of what's happening to small businesses across the country right now.Bret Oliverio—owner of Sup Dogs, voted the #1 college bar in the country in a Barstool Sports poll, had a bittersweet start in the restaurant business, committed to carrying on his brother’s legacy. With absolutely no experience in the space, he and his wife worked tirelessly to build a thriving business employing 120 people, encompassing two locations, and generating millions in annual revenue.Leading into the busiest season of the year, Sup Dogs was thriving. And it continued to thrive leading right up into St. Patrick’s Day weekend. Then the coronavirus health crisis hit... and although it was a tough decision from a business standpoint, Bret was proactive in closing his two locations, using his influence in the community to encourage college students to stay put -- all while providing paychecks for his large team.It hasn’t been easy, but he’s doing everything he can to maintain relationships, continue building his brand, and encourage others that with each passing day, we’re one day closer to this crisis ending.Make sure you listen to the end, when Bret shares hope and optimism around the opportunities that these difficult times will inevitably bring. In this very raw, real episode, he shares what we as family members, as business owners, as community leaders, need to be doing right now as we make our way day to day and look toward the future. In This Episode We Cover:How Bret started to operate a restaurant business with zero knowledgeHow asking dumb questions made him better in his businessHow to separate your brand from other businessesHow the COVID-19 pandemic has affected their businessHow they're managing closing for two weeksHow putting aside ego can help you make ends meetAnd SO much more!Links from the ShowBiggerPockets Check the full show notes here: https://www.biggerpockets.com/bizshow48
Bret Oliverio owns Sup Dogs, and he's one of the best human beings we've come across in our years of serving restaurants. The story of Sup Dogs is so powerful that we made a film about it a few years go. It's here: https://vimeo.com/223895178. Bret was also featured in Restaurant Owners Uncorked part II. Wil asked Bret to hang out and catch up over a podcast, and the result was nearly two hours of conversation about everything from Sup Dogs being named the best college bar in America by Barstool Sports, to the pros and cons of growing to more location (there are two locations now), to family, business philosophy, a You Tube celebrity who has left both $10,000 in cash and a piece of pure gold as a tip, to anything else that came across our minds. This was fun, real, and could have gone on for a few more hours if we had let it. Bret and his team are all amazing people, and we are very fortunate at Schedulefly to have the chance to serve them. Enjoy!
Alabama and Clemson are atop the new AP Top 25 college football rankings. A lucky waitress at a hot dog eatery in Greenville, N.C., receives a $10,000 tip. And the Teller of Tales returns with thoughts on the advancing migrant caravan, and the lost custom of wearing hats.

If you don't know the story of Sup Dogs, head to http://www.schedulefly.com/films_books.htm and watch the film we made about it. It's one of the coolest stories you'll ever come across, in hospitality or elsewhere. Tarra Leatherwood has been working there for three years, and she's a great ambassador for the tremendous brand Bret and his team are building. She talks about the amazing culture, the fast pace, the teamwork, and the genuine, authentic care Bret and his family show for their staff. And you can't listen to her share her passion for what she does and not wish you had her on your team. Enjoy...

It is one of the most rewarding and fun industries, but the work is hard and the hours are long, even for the most seasoned of veterans. This week, I wanted to raise a glass to Bret Oliverio, who is finding success with a fun and funky hot dog restaurant in two college towns in North Carolina. Brace yourself for the amazing journey with Sup Dogs. After suffering the loss of his brother, the Founder of Sup Dogs Restaurants, Bret left his job in sports radio to take up his brother’s vision for a laid back restaurant with good food, good drinks, and a lively atmosphere. I can’t wait for you to hear about Bret’s passion for his employees, dedication to learning the restaurant business, and the fun atmosphere he created as a result of hard work. Don’t be surprised if you are craving a hot dog or longing for your college days afterward! Bret's Bio: After graduating from James Madison University in 2003, Bret Oliverio worked for almost 9 years as an Executive Producer and Asst. Program Director for CBS Radio in Washington, DC. Bret’s brother, Derek, started Sup Dogs Restaurant, located in Greenville, NC, in 2008. Derek unexpectedly passed away in a house fire in late 2011. Shortly thereafter, Bret left his career in radio to take over Derek’s business in hopes of continuing the Sup Dogs dream. Bret jumped into the restaurant business with zero experience. He has been the Owner/Operator of Sup Dogs Restaurant since February 2012. In June 2014, Sup Dogs opened their second location in Chapel Hill, NC. “I’ve learned that this job is about doing what is best for the business, and not necessarily what makes me happy.” ~ Bret Oliverio Also in this week’s episode: Bret’s moving journey towards developing Sup Dogs Restaurant. A focus on giving the college experience while serving awesome food. Bret healed from his brother’s loss by jumping into the restaurant business. How the people in our lives really transform the journey to success. Bret ran a restaurant with no experience! His story is incredible. Bret Oliverio took over Sup Dogs in Greenville, NC in 2011 after his brother, who started the restaurant, tragically passed away. Bret had no restaurant experience and had to learn everything from how to tap a keg, how to manage his staff, how to implement portion controls, how to generate consistent profits, how to ... well, how to do EVERYTHING it takes to run a successful restaurant. Four years later, SUP Dogs is doing extremely well, and opened it's second location two hours away in Chapel Hill, NC nine months ago. Bret shares his story and the lessons he's learned along the way, as well as discusses how he only has four years of experience and still has a lot to learn. This is an absolutely fantastic interview with a guy who has overcome a lot of hurdles. Bret is a hard-working, sharp guy who expects a lot of himself, but has no ego about his success. Enjoy...
