Competitive eating, or speed eating, is a sport in which participants compete against each other to eat large quantities of food, usually in a short time period. Contests are typically eight to ten minutes long, although some competitions can last up to thirty minutes, with the person consuming the most food being declared the winner. Competitive eating is most popular in the United States, Canada, and Japan, where organized professional eating contests often offer prizes, including cash.

Miki Sudo is a competitive eating champion, and the top-ranked female according to Major League Eating. Known for her dominance in the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, she is a ten-time, undefeated champion of that event, setting a record in 2024 by consuming 51 hot dogs in 10 minutes. Miki is currently ranked World #5 among men and women combined.

Nathan's Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest has been hosted every summer on Coney Island since 1972. Competitors eat as many dogs as they can in 10 minutes, hoping to claim the "Mustard Belt" and a grand prize $10,000. According to Nathan's, nearly 40,000 spectators flocked to Coney Island to watch this year's contest. Nielsen reports its annual television viewership at nearly a million people. Last month, we learned that the rivalry between legendary competitive eaters, Japan's Takeru Kobayashi and America's Joey Chestnut, would be renewed this Labor Day. It will be their first head-to-head, hot-dog-eating-showdown in 14 years.  A dispute with the organizers of Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating contest, a July 4th tradition, had forced Kobayashi out of the competition in 2010.
