Piše Blaž Kavšek, bere Igor Velše. Zbirka esejev Borisa A. Novaka Proslavljanja in poslavljanja je velikanska knjiga z ogromnim zvrstnim razponom. Čeprav gre, kot piše v podnaslovu, za »osebno- in literarnozgodovinske eseje«, teksti izrazito preizkušajo fleksibilnost te že izvorno fleksibilne polliterarne zvrsti. Dvainštirideset esejev, ki so obenem refleksije, pesmi, zgodbe, nekrologi in celo avtonomne literarnovedne študije, je razdeljenih v osem tematskih sklopov. Zaradi dolžine zbirke je smiselno predvidevati, da jo bo večina bralcev brala po koščkih, zaradi premišljene in elegantne strukture pa jo bodo lahko motrili tudi bolj celostno, kot organsko zaključeno enoto. Posebej je zanimiva prav njena struktura. Čeprav naj bi bilo to z vidika tega, kako zadnjih nekaj stoletij dojemamo literarnega avtorja, samoumevno, je treba poudariti, da je sintezni princip kompleksne knjige sam Boris A. Novak. Avtor pogosto citira svoje pesmi in druge umetniške projekte ter obračunava s svojimi spomini in starimi nasprotniki. To nenehno vračanje k avtorju bi bilo lahko moteče, če ne bi imelo pomembne funkcije. Opominja namreč, da so raznovrstne čustvene lege, življenjske in profesionalne vloge, na koncu pa tudi kraji in ljudje, ki jih srečujemo v knjigi, zlepljeni v isto osebno zgodovino. Zdi se, kot da Novak s tem še enkrat poskuša odgovoriti na vprašanje, ki si ga je zastavil v prvem delu svojega velikega dela, epa Vrata nepovrata: »Zares, kdo sem sploh jaz, ki sem bil vsi ti ljudje?« Zbirka je ponovitev istih zgodb in s tem iste zgodbe. Če bralec Proslavljanja in poslavljanja bere vzporedno z epom, se mu odpre možnost, da še okrepi učinek, ki je, kot je nekoč zapisala pesnica Anja Grmovšek Drab, posledica »mnogokratnosti« zgodb. Pesnik s tem, ko k zgodbam pristopa z različnih smeri, razblinja iluzije, da lahko osebe in izkušnje, navsezadnje pa tudi samega sebe spoznamo naenkrat in do konca. Eseji, ki jih skupaj držijo ponavljanja in sam Novak, imajo tudi jasno smer. Kot je avtor izpostavil v več promocijskih nastopih in izjavah, scenarij zbirke napoveduje že naslov. Proslavljanja se počasi iztekajo v poslavljanja, dnevnike odhajanj in žalostinke. Zbirka se proti koncu tudi zvrstno zoži in na zadnjih straneh ostanejo samo še pesmi. Novak se tako kljub raznovrstnim inkarnacijam, v katerih smo ga spoznali skozi zbirko, dokončno le potrdi kot pesnik. To je tudi edina eksplicitna in povsem samozavestna samooznaka, ki jo srečamo v prejšnjih delih knjige. Pesnik vse ponavljanje, eruditsko gostost, sklice, obračunavanja, tragične zgodbe, vse težko obvladljive elemente, nad katerimi bi bralec lahko potencialno obupal ali se v njih izgubil, na koncu vsaj literarno pomiri. Poslavljanja se v skrajni točki zapognejo v proslavitev moči literature oziroma pesništva. Rekli bi lahko, da je avtor gledal dovolj daleč in dovolj široko. Pred morebitnimi obtožbami pretirane vpletenosti v svoj izdelek ga rešujejo očitno iskrena naklonjenost do prijateljev, navdušenje nad umetnostjo ter bogata in geografsko široko razprostrta osebna zgodovina. Knjiga vztrajno niha med avtorjem in raznovrstnimi oporokami, ki so mu jih zapustili bližnji in daljni, ljubi in neljubi sopotniki. Skupaj z avtorjem je zato v esejih vseprisotno tudi marsikatero drugo življenje, zaradi teh spremljevalcev pa niti zanj niti za bralca ni bojazni, da bi ostala sama.
