Amy Kaban, CEO and Co-Founder of Parkerview discusses her journey from brewing kombucha as a hobby to building a successful business in the competitive food and beverage industry. Amy shares her experience as an accidental entrepreneur, reflecting on major milestones like expanding province-wide, completing a successful bottle redesign, and being named Best Overall Local Supply Partner by Sobey's. She also talks about how Parkerview Brews has thrived in the crowded kombucha and health-focused beverage market by offering great-tasting drinks made with unique, locally-sourced ingredients, and how supporting local suppliers has been a core value in her brand's growth. What started as a home-brewing hobby in her kitchen has grown into one of Saskatchewan's most beloved kombucha brands. Alongside her husband, Tyler, Amy launched Parkerview Brews in 2017, quickly capturing attention at the Saskatoon Farmers' Market before opening their first storefront just a year later. Today, the brand is carried province-wide in local cafes, grocery stores, and major retailers, including Sobey's, where they were named Best Overall Local Supply Partner.A graduate of the Edwards School of Business at the University of Saskatchewan (B.Comm. 2006), Amy's background in marketing and international trade helped shape her approach to growing Parkerview Brews into a leading name in the increasingly competitive health and wellness beverage space. She reflects on key milestones like their bold bottle redesign, which helped them stand out on the shelf, and the organic growth fueled by strong word-of-mouth support from local businesses.Amy's philosophy is simple but impactful: focus on offering a great-tasting product made with unique, locally sourced ingredients. With flavors like Saskatoon berry, peach mango, and more —often incorporating fruits from nearby orchards—Parkerview Brews Kombucha embraces its local roots. In this episode, Amy shares insights on turning a hobby into a full-fledged business, the challenges and rewards of operating in a niche market, and how she and her team remain committed to sustainability, community, and authenticity. And, a number of city councillors are supporting the idea of a commercial parking levy to deal with the city's budget crunch. Both Ontario's Integrity commissioner and Auditor Generals are doing separate investigations into the Ford government's Greenbelt plans. The question remains: did the Premier and housing minister tip off any developers? And, federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh is calling out the big grocery retailers for skyrocketing prices of their products. ---- THE GREENBELT INVESTIGATIONS: REACTION FROM THE NDP Libby Znaimer is joined by Peter Tabuns, Interim Leader of the Ontario NDP. This week, both the province's integrity commissioner and the auditor general have announced that they are doing their own respective investigations into the Ford government's Greenbelt plans. Tabuns weighs in on the latest. ---- FOOD INFLATION REMAINS HIGH DESPITE EFFORTS TO COMBAT IT Libby Znaimer is now joined by David Macdonald, Senior Economist of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives. We all know that food inflation is rampant and outpacing overall inflation. And, there is a big debate about whether the large grocers are taking advantage and profiting excessively. It's the beginning of the month and I get to chat with Ellen Bayens of https://theceliacscene.com/ about the articles she has brought to our attention over the past month. We discuss a study of the issues involved in screening for other autoimmune disorders when patients have Celiac Disease, and screening for Celiac Disease in patients with other autoimmune conditions. We also discuss Refractory Celiac Disease which is CD that doesn't resolve properly on a gluten free diet. The gluten free diet is difficult to learn and there is a new teaching technique to empower celiacs to use new tools to help them recover. Ellen and I have a lively discussion about some recent podcasts I've done including Episode 246 which is a discussion with larger than life personality Mairlyn Smith about fibre in a gluten free diet, as well as a refreshing (and comical) look at how fibre helps the body. Ellen has had a relationship with Stella's Perogies which are now available in Eastern Canada at Sobeys and Walmart. Perogies are popular with many people during the holiday season.
