Wes and Blake break down the types of players the Pistons added, what their roles may be, and what this means for the team moving forward. The Minnesota Timberwolves had an unpredictable week, losing in lackadaisical fashion vs Orlando, then crushing Houston, followed by blowing a 23 point lead in Chicago, and ultimately dismantling a frustrated Milwaukee Bucks team. The Wolves traded away Shake Milton, Troy Brown Jr. and a 2030 second round pick to Detroit for point guard Monte Morris, who can hit the three and has great ball control. 0:00 ... Show open and introductions ... the Evan Scott episode (#78) 1:05 ... Bet Online Live commercial read 1:48 ... Bruce's opening comment on Draymond Green's latest selfish antics 4:23... World B's opening comment is on Mark Cuban, who is selling his stake in the Mavericks after owning the team since 2000. 6:10 ... Ross' opening comment is on the Houston Rockets, who are much improved but still winless on the road. 7:32 ... World B gets us going in the first quarter with a breakdown of the Orlando Magic, who are riding an 8 game win streak behind Paolo Banchero and a very deep bench. 9:43 ... Bruce points out that the Magic have owned the Celtics since last season winning four of their last five meetings. 11:20 ... Ross loves Cole Anthony coming off the Magic bench and describes him as a "Bucket." Ross also has praise for Jalen Suggs. 13:57 ... Mo Wagner has really found a great role coming off the bench for the Magic after bouncing around his first three years in the league. 15:06 ... The LA Clippers are imploding and suffered a terrible loss on Monday when they lost to Denver, which was without its top three players (Jokic, Gordon, and Murray). 16:28 ... Russell Westbrook has been negatively affected by James Harden's return. He's coming off the bench and averaging under 10 points a game. 18:53 ... Ross is stunned by how poor the ball movement is for the Clippers and feels they need a better offensive system. 20:00 ... World B explains how no team in the NBA runs as many iso plays as LA and they also make fewer passes per game than any other team. 21:37 ... Bruce says LA lacks chemistry, is an old team, and does nothing particularly well. Bruce also believes Clippers owner Steve Ballmer was behind the Harden deal and forced GM Lawrence Frank to make the trade for marketing reasons. 22:50 .... The Phoenix Suns are on fire behind Kevin Durant and Devin Booker. World B feels Booker is going to be in the MVP discussion and is a true difference maker. 25:07 ... While Book struggled on Wednesday in their loss to Orlando, "Kevin and Devin" are combining for 60 points a game and Booker's return to the lineup has made KD's life easier. Bruce also has love for Grayson Allen, who has filled while Bradley Beal has been injured. Ross agrees 100% on Allen. 28:17 ... Eric Gordon has also been huge in his 16th NBA season for Phoenix averaging nearly 15 a game while shooting over 40% from downtown. 30:35 ... In our "Three Man Weave," we size up the Minnesota Timberwolves after their big win over OKC on Monday. Rudy Gobert had a big game and the Wolves really dug in on defense in the second half. Minnesota overcame the loss of Anthony Edwards, who missed the whole 4th quarter and had two great performances off the bench from Naz Reid and Troy Brown Jr. 35:06 ... Ross wants to see more from Jalen Williams, who was a solid rookie last season but who has struggled early in the season for the Thunder. World B wonders if the arrival of Chet Holmgren has negatively affected Williams' development. 37:55 .... In the second topic of the Three Man Weave, the Pistons are a total mess. Coach Monty Williams' job is not in jeopardy but he might need to shake up his lineup to motivate some of the players who are lacking the ability to battle out there. The Pistons can't shoot and that's a problem. 43:00 ... The final element in the Three Man Weave concerns the Spurs and Victor Wembanyama. He's great, but his team stinks. Bruce compares Spurs coach Gregg Popovich to Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots. When Belichick lost Tom Brady he wasn't such a great coach anymore and when Pop lost Tim Duncan he had the same issue. 46:06 .... Ross shares his "best bets" as he sizes up the four quarterfinal games in the "In Season Tournament" which take place next Monday and Tuesday. He likes the Celtics over the Pacers and the Knicks over the Bucks in the east. Ross likes the Kings over the Pelicans and the Suns over the Lakers out west. 48:35 ... Final Thoughts ... Bruce feels Gregg Popovich was out of line for telling the Spurs fans not to boo Kawhi Leonard last week. 50:31 .... World B has praise for Russell Westbrook, who has turned his image around as a member of the Clippers after a bad experience with the Lakers. 51:31 ... Ross comments on the Chris Paul beef with referee Scott Foster. If Foster said something about one of his kids, as CP3 alleges Ross feels the league needs to step in and change something involving the two men. 53:33 .... Ross says goodbye ... TRT 53:52

The Minnesota Timberwolves improved to 4-0 in the preseason with a blowout win over Maccabi Ra'Anana. Ben Beecken (@bbeecken) breaks down the reserves-only performance, as Troy Brown Jr. and a host of non-rotation players led them to a victory. Josh Minott did what he needed to do to make the case for a spot in Chris Finch's rotation, and Luka Garza turned in a typically solid performance. Rookie Leonard Miller was also fantastic, and a few other non-roster camp invitees impressed in the battle for the final roster spots. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Locked On Wolves - Daily Podcast On The Minnesota Timberwolves
Rookie Leonard Miller was also fantastic, and a few other non-roster camp invitees impressed in the battle for the final roster spots.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Jase MedicalGet $20 off these lifesaving antibiotics with Jase Medical by using code LOCKEDON at checkout on jasemedical.com.GametimeDownload the Gametime app, create an account, and use code LOCKEDONNBA for $20 off your first purchase.BirddogsGo to birddogs.com/LOCKEDONNBA or enter promo code LOCKEDONNBA for a free water bottle with any purchase. The Minnesota Timberwolves are effectively replacing Taurean Prince with Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Troy Brown Jr., and the decision is a sound one. Ben Beecken (@bbeecken) breaks down why Alexander-Walker and Brown Jr. are both better fits for the Wolves -- and at the same combined salary as what Prince would have made. From perimeter defense to shooting profiles, NAW and Brown are clear upgrades for Chris Finch's bench. Also, Kyle Anderson is officially playing for Team China and another Western Conference team is interested in former Wolves wing Jaylen Nowell.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!PrizePicksFirst-time users can receive a 100% instant deposit match up to $100 with promo code LOCKEDON. Tim Connelly is known for hitting in the second round of the NBA Draft, and that's the hope with the current condition of the Timberwolves draft status every other year for awhile. Trading up to get Lenard Miller was a very interesting move, especially for a player that some felt could go as early as late in the lottery! Jaylen Clark could be a great pick, but we'll have to wait awhile as he recovers from an Achilles tear. The Timberwolves also added Shake Milton and Troy Brown Jr. in a could of savvy moves in free agency. After hearing from the great listeners of TE, your host gets deeper into a strange and kind of funny trend going on in the NBA via trades, you won't want to miss that! Locked On Wolves - Daily Podcast On The Minnesota Timberwolves
The Minnesota Timberwolves improved their roster with smart use of their remaining cap space as NBA Free Agency began. Ben Beecken (@bbeecken) breaks down the additions of Troy Brown Jr. and Shake Milton and the re-signing of Nickeil Alexander-Walker, and why the Wolves are better off with that trio of players than with the departed Taurean Prince and Jaylen Nowell. Additionally, why shoring up the depth chart with modest, team-friendly deals was much smarter than doling out a large contract to one bench player and then filling out the roster with minimum salaries.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!BetterHelpThis episode is sponsored by/brought to you by BetterHelp. The Lakers had success in Game 1 by playing certain matchups that seemed to catch the Warriors off guard - starting Jarred Vanderbilt on Steph Curry, for example. And in Game 3, the Lakers came back with a host of changes. Vanderbilt was switched off of Curry and onto Draymond Green, letting Anthony Davis check (and essentially ignore) JaMychal Green and have more freedom to roam defensively. And, of course, Lonnie Walker IV got the minutes that had been going to Troy Brown Jr., a significant change in the rotation that paid real dividends. So with the Lakers up 2-1 going into tonight's Game 4, how much credit does Ham get for LA's good showing thus far? It's been a fairly controversial season for the first year head coach, and he's certainly under the microscope.Should people expect more changes for Game 4? Is there anything Ham can do to preempt any changes Steve Kerr might throw at him? Or is it a matter of having a plan ready based on what might be coming? Certainly the Lakers won't be approaching tonight's game like they did Game 2 in San Francisco. Not exactly a scheduled loss, but the Lakers didn't keep the pedal down throughout.Monday, they'll be pushing for a win, because they don't want to have to win two of three with two games up north.Meanwhile, does Darvin need to think about how Reaves is being used (how much, as well), or is Walker the adjustment that can help the second year player make it through, when fatigue looks like a real issue?HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: The Lakers made a ton of adjustments on Saturday.SEGMENT 2: How much credit does Ham get for LA's 2-1 lead? Is Lonnie Walker sticking in the rotation?SEGMENT 3: What to expect in Game 4.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!eBay MotorsFor parts that fit, head to eBay Motors and look for the green check. It's been a fairly controversial season for the first year head coach, and he's certainly under the microscope. Should people expect more changes for Game 4? Is there anything Ham can do to preempt any changes Steve Kerr might throw at him? Or is it a matter of having a plan ready based on what might be coming? Certainly the Lakers won't be approaching tonight's game like they did Game 2 in San Francisco. Not exactly a scheduled loss, but the Lakers didn't keep the pedal down throughout. Monday, they'll be pushing for a win, because they don't want to have to win two of three with two games up north. Meanwhile, does Darvin need to think about how Reaves is being used (how much, as well), or is Walker the adjustment that can help the second year player make it through, when fatigue looks like a real issue? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers made a ton of adjustments on Saturday. SEGMENT 2: How much credit does Ham get for LA's 2-1 lead? Is Lonnie Walker sticking in the rotation? SEGMENT 3: What to expect in Game 4. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! eBay Motors For parts that fit, head to eBay Motors and look for the green check. On today's episode, Jason kicks things off by taking Darvin Ham to task for inexplicable coaching decisions in the Los Angeles Lakers' loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. LA could have closed the series out were it not for Ham's insistence on benching Anthony Davis in favor of guys like Troy Brown Jr and Malik Beasley at the worst possible moments. Ham should honestly be thanking his lucky stars that Mike Budenholzer exists this morning. Coach Bud, Giannis Antetokounmpo and the top-seeded Milwaukee Bucks got bounced in the first round by Jimmy Butler and the eighth-seeded Miami Heat. You can't have a meltdown like that and not expected to see major changes in the near future. Later, Super Bowl-winning executive and VSiN host Michael Lombardi swings by to discuss why he believes Bryce Young and Jalen Carter are the only blue chip prospects available in the upcoming NFL Draft, the biggest difference between pass rushers Tyree Wilson and Will Anderson, why Bijan Robinson should be viewed as an offensive weapon and not just a running back, the reality that comes with drafting a guy like Will Levis or Anthony Richardson and much more! In the second hour, Dan Bernstein and Laurence Holmes were joined by Cubs outfielder Ian Happ to discuss his approach at the plate, second baseman Nico Hoerner's success, Dodgers star Mookie Betts' versatility and more. Bernstein and Holmes then discussed the Packers' trade of quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the Jets for multiple picks. Later during the High Noon segment, the guys listened to rapper Snoop Dogg vent his frustration with Lakers forward Troy Brown Jr. and discussed the popularity of electric bikes in the Amish community.
After dropping a game against the Rockets and then suffering a crushing buzzer beater Friday against the Mavericks, the Lakers are basically all out of hall passes. With 11 games to go, if they want to give themselves a shot at the playoffs, they can't afford more than a couple losses. And for one of those to come at home against Orlando? Can't have it. Austin Reaves made sure the Lakers went home with a W. Career game, 35 points, six rebounds, six assists, and 18 trips to the free throw line. He was incredible, and easily the best player on the floor for either team. And the Lakers, who got better performances from D'Angelo Russell (18 points, 4/8 from downtown) and Troy Brown Jr. (4/8 from 3), needed every ounce of production Reaves was able to provide because the Lakers still haven't figured out how to spring Anthony Davis loose offensively now that teams are giving him so much extra attention. Davis played a good game defensively (four blocks, countless shots deterred/contested), but with only 15 points, just wasn't a big factor on that end. It's something the Lakers need to fix over their final 10 games if they're going to win enough of them to make the potential return of LeBron James relevant. And on that front, Darvin Ham said Sunday the Lakers expecting him to be back before the end of the regular season. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Austin Reaves is incredible on a night where Anthony Davis is not, and he may very well have saved LA's season. At least for now. SEGMENT 2: How can the Lakers do more to shake Davis loose offensively? SEGMENT 3: The bench has come through for the Lakers in a big way, but the starters aren't pulling their weight. Of late, The Athletic's Shams Charania hasn't exactly been the bearer of good news for Lakers fans. And Monday, talking with FanDuelTV, wasn't much different.Charania noted that while the Lakers are going to re-evaluate LeBron James after three weeks, there is certainly some belief that the actual length of LeBron's absence could extend past that mark. Well past it, potentially, calling into serious question just how much regular season action James might get before a (hypothetical) play-in matchup. Or whether the Lakers can hang on long enough to even make those last few games meaningful. And what exactly will be the considerations the Lakers and LeBron make when deciding whether LeBron can/should return to action? It's all very speculative and super-unpleasant for the Lakers, and puts that much more pressure on Anthony Davis to elevate the team, D'Angelo Russell to get back on the floor, and the supporting cast to rise a little above role player status. But the flip side? The schedule is favorable. The Lakers play teams in front of them, they play teams that are slumping. They play teams, like Tuesday against Memphis, missing significant pieces (Ja Morant, Steven Adams, Brandon Clarke). They've shown themselves fully capable of winning games since the deadline. One reason? Guys like Troy Brown Jr., who has thrived since the Lakers reorganized the roster at the deadline, finding a steadier role, greater confidence and plenty of rhythm. He's now firmly occupying that spot on the roster of cheap offseason additions last summer that now look appealing to hold on to this summer, but could be tough because he's outplayed his contract. Finally, the Lakers will retire Pau Gasol's 16 on Tuesday. He's one of the best humans we've covered in sports, and now finds himself not only representing a symbol of basketball greatness and Lakers greatness, but as important connective tissue for the memory of Kobe Bryant. It's a unique role he is well-suited to play.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Just how many games is LeBron going to miss, now?SEGMENT 2: The burden on AD, and the increasing confidence of Troy Brown.SEGMENT 3: Pau Gasol gets his jersey retired tonight.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Without LeBron James in the lineup, the Lakers (on most nights at least) will need Anthony Davis to provide 48 minutes of MVP caliber basketball to give themselves a good chance to win. Friday against Minnesota, he delivered most of that, but not quite all. Make no mistake - Davis was LA's best player, by far. But he couldn't quite deliver perfection to elevate a bad night from the supporting cast. Sunday against Golden State, Davis was everything he could be for the Lakers, and while for a stretch it looked like he might be again let down by his teammates, this time they came through. Whether a big first half from Jarred Vanderbilt, a big fourth quarter from Dennis Schroder, or excellent efforts throughout by Troy Brown Jr. and Austin Reaves, the Lakers role players stepped up and provided great backup for Davis, and as a result, the Lakers picked up a must-have on Sunday. With the win, the Lakers into a statistical tie for the 10 spot, are only a half-game behind New Orleans for the nine, and two behind the Clippers and Mavs for seven and eight. They're also a half game from 13th... so no time to rest on their laurels. But for a team that had to pile up wins after the All Star break to have a chance, the Lakers are still looking good, even without LeBron James. They're 6-3 since the deadline, including 3 games LeBron missed due to injury, with a relatively easy schedule (or about as easy as could be asked) going forward. They're catching a break Tuesday, for example, because a slumping Grizzlies team will be without the injured Brandon Clarke and star guard Ja Morant, who has stepped away from the team (quasi-suspension?) following a run of disturbing reports about off-court behavior. But it all starts with Davis, who has to maintain this pace and in the process, help re-write the narrative about his time with the Lakers, and potentially how people feel about his future here. And meanwhile, fans might want to cut Darvin Ham a little slack on his rotation choices, at least until D'Angelo Russell is back. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Anthony Davis comes up big for the Lakers, who get a badly needed win. SEGMENT 2: Can Davis keep this up? What about the rest of the supporting cast, Sunday and beyond? SEGMENT 3: Context matters with rotation choices. Darvin Ham's option tree is pretty limited with both James and Russell sidelined. The Lakers split a weekend of tough games, falling to the Timberwolves on Friday before beating the Warriors on Sunday afternoon, but were carried offensively by Anthony Davis in both games with 38 and 39 point performances. Pete, Mike, and Darius discuss AD's play in both games, Darvin Ham's comments and adjustments from Friday to Sunday, Austin's on-ball work as a shot creator, and Troy Brown Jr.'s strong play. Winners of five straight, the Lakers basically made a calculated sacrifice of that accomplishment, going into Denver Monday night and electing to give LeBron James, struggling with any number of physical maladies despite MVP-level play, the night off. But without Austin Reaves, Lonnie Walker IV, Troy Brown Jr. and, of course, Anthony Davis, there was a very, very good chance the Lakers (despite playing so well of late) would have lost in Denver even if LeBron had played. And now he'll get a chance to rest until Thursday's game at home vs. Dallas. Four full days off (Sunday-Wednesday) is about as much rest as an NBA season provides, while only missing one game. So the Lakers were wise to take advantage, something easier to do now that they've regained contact with the rest of the conference. Still, despite a home heavy stretch through the end of the month, the Lakers still face a stiff challenge to keep the momentum going while so many players are out. And to make matters worse, Pat Beverley left Monday's loss with a hip injury. The Lakers will have more info on him Tuesday or Wednesday, but given how he's turned his season around (and that the Lakers are suddenly very short on bodies) any missed time for Beverley would be very impactful. (Russell Westbrook suffered a dislocated right pinkie finger, too, but at least for the time being appears capable of playing. Which is a big deal, especially since he and LeBron have made significant progress in their two-man partnership.) All this gets to LA's continuing problem - they may very well have used up, or nearly used up, a whole season's worth of margin for error in the first 12 games. So can they hang on until Davis comes back? The news continues to be as good as can be expected, at least in the sense that the Lakers currently appear to be avoiding catastrophe. Davis, reports ESPN's Dave McMenamin, will start ramping up for a return now that the Lakers are back in Los Angeles. But that doesn't mean he's hitting the court. It starts in the pool, and then on the altered-gravity treadmill, with the hope they can "eye" a return in a couple of weeks, and start "penciling in a potential return to game action," McMenamin wrote. So there's a lot of wiggle in here, for sure. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers lose in Denver as LeBron gets well-scheduled time off. SEGMENT 2: Russell Westbrook is playing well with James, and remains a very durable presence in LA's oft-injured lineup. SEGMENT 3: How long can the Lakers keep surviving down so many players? Winners of five straight, the Lakers basically made a calculated sacrifice of that accomplishment, going into Denver Monday night and electing to give LeBron James, struggling with any number of physical maladies despite MVP-level play, the night off.But without Austin Reaves, Lonnie Walker IV, Troy Brown Jr. and, of course, Anthony Davis, there was a very, very good chance the Lakers (despite playing so well of late) would have lost in Denver even if LeBron had played. And now he'll get a chance to rest until Thursday's game at home vs. Dallas. Four full days off (Sunday-Wednesday) is about as much rest as an NBA season provides, while only missing one game. So the Lakers were wise to take advantage, something easier to do now that they've regained contact with the rest of the conference.Still, despite a home heavy stretch through the end of the month, the Lakers still face a stiff challenge to keep the momentum going while so many players are out. No LeBron James, no Anthony Davis, no Lonnie Walker IV, no Troy Brown Jr. in the second half... no problem for the Lakers. Behind 32 points from Dennis Schröder, the Lakers scored their most improbable win of the season, 112-109 over the Miami Heat at the Crypt. The Lakers played an incredibly gritty game, fighting off multiple pushes from a Heat squad playing basically at full strength. The win, which steals one back for the Lakers from the pile of games they had no business losing, moves the team to 17-21, with the Hawks coming to town on Friday. So the Lakers, after that 2-10 start, have gone a much more respectable 15-11. It's not a pace that would make the 73-win Warriors blush, but it's not nothing, either. Especially given the choppy health of the roster (most notably, an injured Anthony Davis). So is this team worth trying to rescue? Should Rob Pelinka go all in around the Davis/James core? Even if it costs every asset left in the cupboard? We talk about this and more with John Nichols, aka LaJethro Jenkins, of the Jenkins and Jonez podcast, and Out of Pocket on WaveTV.After discussing easily the most stunning win of the year, behind a gangbusters effort from Schröder, it's on to the paradox that is Russell Westbrook. While he was productive on Wednesday (18/8/9), Russ also had seven turnovers and was almost singlehandedly responsible for Miami's late first half run. So while he's found a niche this season with the Lakers, he's still a fascinating figure in the league. What happens next year? Is he now a sixth man going forward, the kind that will be sought after this season is over? Where does he fit? Could it even be... in LA?HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: The Lakers win an improbable one, and it is extremely helpful.SEGMENT 2: What becomes of Russell Westbrook after this season?SEGMENT 3: Is it still worth going all in for this season? What happens if the Lakers don't?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar.
