Christen Brandt and Tammy Tibbetts are on a mission to unlock the potential of girls and women, especially in parts of the world where they’re often excluded from education and, in turn, much of life and the opportunity to help shape their communities and lives in a meaningful way. Both Christen and Tammy grew up in households where they were loved and supported, taught to believe in themselves and the power of education and become strong advocates. They were the first in their families to go to college, and both landed in the fashion magazine world in New York after graduating, where they started building careers and rising up in the industry. But an increasing awakening to inequity led them into a collaboration that would start as a viral video to raise awareness and eventually lead them out of the world of magazines and to co-found a foundation to help women and girls globally become educated, called She’s the First. Along the way, they’ve reimagined the foundation model, becoming leading voices in a new approach to philanthropy that has revolutionized outdated models by shifting power to the most vulnerable. So many people starting coming to them to learn more about how to step into the world of giving in a different way, they decided to distill their philosophy and strategies into a powerful new book, Impact: A Step-by-Step Plan to Create the World You Want to Live In. Tammy Tibbetts was voted "Most Shy" in her high school yearbook and felt the pressure of perfectionism for too long. Episode 5 with co-founder and CEO of She's the First Tammy Tibbetts: YES today [Nov. 3 2020] is anxiety-filled, but today is also an opportunity for us to look inside ourselves, look around at our communities and our world and think deeply about what we have to offer to build the world we want. You may be thinking ... then what!? How do we create systemic change, not just bandaid solutions? How do we make a sustainable long term plan that won’t burn us out in months or years?Tammy and her co-author Christen Brandt take us through a step-by-step process that answers those big questions in their book Impact: A Step-by-Step Plan to Create the World You Want to Live in. Preorder your copy at: planyourimpact.com "We talk about in the book the difference between intent and impact. It comes from a good place… I think a lot of people overcommit. I hope this book gives them permission that it’s ok to say no. You don’t have to throw your hat in the ring for every volunteer opportunity and every fundraising ask, because that’s not sustainable and having focus is so important to being effective. You can care about every social injustice out there, and you should frankly, but it doesn’t mean that you have to… distribute the bulk of your resources everywhere. You can find ways to practice allyship as a lifestyle, being an ally and an advocate for many different causes, but when you’re making decisions about where to put your time and your money … there’s a finite amount that you have to give. So if you don’t over-distribute that then you’ll be able to find more fulfillment personally because you won’t feel like you’ve scattered yourself so that it’s hard to really know what it all added up to. If you go in with an actual plan, (this is what you walk away from the book with, an actual one page plan of your goals ranked by effort) that you can come back and check in with yourself on, and be honest. I have an impact plan too, there are goals that I’ve set that I just keep not hitting and I’ve had to recognize that “ok, this is just not the time in my life that I’m going to be able to do that but I want to make sure I’m doing this other thing really well.” So, scaling back and not feeling bad about that."

Honored to have my friend Tammy on today's episode! Tammy Tibbetts drives the fundraising and communications strategy of She's the First (STF), a nonprofit that fights gender inequality by educating girls and training students. To date, she’s led STF through nine years of positive financial growth and manages more than $1M+ in assets annually. She’s known for building remarkable teams and creating compelling ways for supporters to get involved in the mission at all levels. Tammy is a frequent keynote speaker and panelist and has done three TEDx talks. Over the years, her work has been shortlisted in Marie Claire's 20 Women Changing the World, in Forbes' 30 Under 30, TIME's 30 Under 30 World-Changers, and in Fast Company's Most Creative People in Business. Currently, she’s working on a book project with her co-founder, Christen Brandt, to help individuals craft their own personal impact plans, using the frameworks and philosophies that have made She's the First successful. Tammy is a proud first-generation college graduate who attended The College of New Jersey, earning a B.A. in journalism, summa cum laude. Although voted “Most Shy” in her high school yearbook, she is anything but that today, whether she’s speaking on stage or being a clown in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (yes, really). She started her career at Hearst Magazines, where she launched three profitable digital properties and became Seventeen’s inaugural, award-winning social media editor. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/7questions/support

At age 23, Tammy had an idea for a social media campaign that would fundraise for girls’ education in low-income countries. She shared her idea with a Facebook friend, they created a YouTube video, and that video became the She’s The First movement: a nonprofit that fights gender inequality by supporting girls who will be first in their families to graduate from high school. Today She’s The First reaches millions of people and has changed the lives of almost 1,000 students around the world.

Tammy Tibbetts, 29, bucks common assumption that millennials are a bunch of entitled brats. Six years ago Tibbetts launched She's The First, a nonprofit that supports girls' education in developing countries. To-date, the charity has supported nearly 600 girls in 10 countries -- all thanks to Tibbetts fundraising, including her signature tie-die cupcake fundraisers and powerful command of social media and leveraging support on college campuses. Named to Forbes' "5 Most Powerful Women Changing The World For Girls," and "30 Under 30," She's The First this year is on track to raise $1 million. Have a listen to how Tibbetts' own high school experience, growing up in a blue-collar New Jersey family in which she was the first in her family to attend college -- just like the girls her organization supports. She shares with me her passion for teenage girls, which started with her own awkward high school years (voted "most shy"), through her experience as an editor at Seventeen magazine ("I didn't read Seventeen when I was in high school. I didn't think I was cool enough," she says), and to her remarkable work today. Loving this podcast? Follow on RSS or iTunes:
