Dr. Janet Schwartz, an expert in forensic behavioral science, received a B.S. in Education from Valparaiso University and advanced degrees from the University of Pittsburgh, where she was recognized as a University Scholar. Her advocacy emerged during her high school years amid the Civil Rights era. Schwartz initially dedicated 17 years to working with children and families before transitioning to forensic fraud research following significant discoveries. She leads Forensic Fraud Research, Inc., providing intelligence to numerous federal and state agencies. A noted academic and author, she has contributed significantly to understanding white-collar crime and has written the bestselling "Last Summer with Oscar." Schwartz has also been involved in international initiatives, including establishing a domestic violence center with Muslim forensic psychiatrists. Her upcoming work, "Authentic Intelligence," aims to guide personal and global transformation through mental and spiritual growth. Her current writing project, Authentic Intelligence: How to Use Your Mental, Emotional & Spiritual Gifts to Create the Life – and World – You Want, is soon to be completed. Recent cases that are featured online are “Transforming Corruption on the Local Level Part I” and “Transforming Corruption on the Local Level Part II: Tools for Navigating Narcissistic Warfare.” https://janschwartz.us/jan-schwartz-biography/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/janetmschwartz/ Jan's Journey From Crime to Expert Jan shared her journey from growing up in a suburb of Chicago, where she was exposed to organized crime, to becoming a family therapist and eventually a forensic behavioral scientist. She recounted her experiences with criminal kids and their families and how she began to hear dark secrets and faced threats from organized crime figures. Despite these challenges, Jan decided to do the right thing and started sharing data with authorities, eventually becoming the president of Forensic Fraud Research Incorporated. She has since provided information to various government agencies and state departments, becoming an expert in managing and transforming corruption on a local level. Michael acknowledged Jan's journey and the impact of organized crime on their community. Jan's Career Journey and AI Discussion Jan and Michael discussed Jan's career journey, which involved a significant change in direction after a life-threatening incident. Michael praised Jan's resilience and adaptability, noting that her experiences, including working with elementary school kids and her time in Ohio, had honed her forensic skills. They also touched on the potential of AI for both good and nefarious purposes, with Michael emphasizing the importance of maintaining fairness and legitimacy in the face of technological advancements. Authentic Intelligence and Personal Growth Michael and Jan discussed the concept of authentic intelligence, which Jan defines as the interplay between mental, emotional, and spiritual intelligence. Jan shared her journey of discovering this concept and how it has helped her work. Michael agreed with Jan's perspective, emphasizing the importance of balancing these three aspects of intelligence for personal and professional growth. They also discussed the potential of this concept to positively impact society and the need for individuals to prioritize their well-being. The conversation concluded with Jan expressing her commitment to spreading this idea and helping others realize their potential through authentic intelligence. Addressing Polarization and Mainstream Media Michael and Jan discussed the current polarized state of the world, particularly in the United States. They criticized mainstream media for focusing on ratings rather than informing and educating people. Michael suggested that people work together to understand each other's perspectives, using a model of three circles as a boardroom for discussion. He believed that by doing so, people would find more agreement than disagreement, and the discord in the world would fade away. Harmony, Euphoria, and Kindness in Culture Michael and Jan discussed the importance of being in a harmonious state and its positive impact on individuals and society. Michael emphasized the euphoria and clarity that come from being in this state, allowing him to navigate challenging situations and be a beacon for others. He also highlighted the value of kindness and helping others, which benefits the recipient and the giver. Jan suggested that focusing on connecting with others and being competitive with oneself rather than others can create a more harmonious culture. They both emphasized the importance of self-efficacy and making a sincere difference. Kindness, Positivity, and Book Promotion Michael and Jan discussed the importance of acting with kindness and positivity in the world. Jan shared her work and encouraged others to connect with her through her website and LinkedIn.

In Part 2 of this 2 part series, Miyaovich and the Rabbi talk about: "thoughts and prayers" and how using prayer to get things is basically childish bullshit...how prayer has shown throughout history that it has no real ability to stop bad things, how too many liberals persist in the behavior of wanting an improved world that other people will deliver, how people need to maintain a balance between needing service and ceding authority to others, and how "the devil" uses small strategies over using great evils.
Show notes: https://www.tamihackbarth.com/blog/episode-182 Happy Summer Solstice! It is the perfect time of year to let go of what isn't working and set new intentions for the future. How would the rest of 2023 feel if you prioritized sleep this summer? How would you feel if you prioritized moving your body? What would shift in your life if your family took on a lot more responsibilities around the house? What would you do with your free time? Something to think about, right? I ask myself these kinds of questions all the time. My belief is the deeper my self-knowledge, the deeper the life. One of my areas of interest is personal finance. People, especially women, tell themselves stories about money and many of our money issues can be traced back to childhood. This week on the podcast, I am talking to Jill Sirianni, co-host of the Frugal Friends podcast. In our chat Jill and I talked about how she went from being in debt to now working in personal finance. She spoke about how related personal finance and self-care are because both rely so much on shifting our mindset. I hope you will give it a listen. In this episode of the What If Series, we are asking some big questions around using your experience and skills to start something completely new or get imaginative on how you can positively affect your community with what you already have. What do you bring to the table with the whole totality of your experience that could be a force of good for your community or for the people around you? Our guest is leader and teacher Emily Pillton-Lam, an inspiring thinker and author of several books and creator of the nonprofit – Girls Garage. She's taught thousands of gender expansive youth how to use power tools and to dream of a world built more equitably and sustainably, and she's dreamt about what it would look like if girls/women were empowered to facilitate the surroundings in our world differently–with an eye toward thinking more communally and factoring in the lived experience of the people around them. In this episode Emily and Jen discuss: The shocking statistics around gender imbalance in Architecture, Engineering and Construction Worlds Why power tools can make you feel superhuman How it takes messy courage to change course and start something new Dreaming of a world built by women Emily gives us insight into the big “what if” question we might all ask ourselves: what if we could affect our world with the skills and experience we have right now? * * * Thank you to our sponsors! Also, this was one of the first times where I looked around and there were other teenagers who were diverse, who were from all over the country, who had all kinds of various family stories, school experiences and yet, we were all on this construction site, building this thing together and it just felt ... like a light went off. This is the thing that makes me feel powerful and purposeful and that I don't have to check who I am at the door, that I could be my full self. So that's the gift that I think construction gave to me at a young age, and it's a gift that I have committed my adult life to paying forward and paying back and giving back to other young people." - Emily Pilloton-Lam “For women, a lot of our lives are influenced by, or sometimes dictated by how we view our bodies in the world.” - Emily Pilloton-Lam “So this is how I think about power tools. Of course, they're fun, they're exciting to learn, but they're like a real metaphor for what women can do and what women can contribute in the world in a physical way.” - Emily Pilloton-Lam “I think going to an art school and studying architecture was the thing that then set me up to start a nonprofit that was rooted in who I was, but also, this larger idea about service that would bring other people in too.” - Emily Pilloton-Lam “I got to work with people that sometimes I didn't agree with. I got to be in rooms where I sometimes didn't belong. I learned a lot from those couple years where I wasn't doing what I ultimately wanted to do.” - Emily Pilloton-Lam “One of the first things that you see when you walk [into Girls Garage], in our reception area, on the left-hand wall, there's a tiled wall, there's all these wood tiles and every tile has the name of a student who's been here and there's like a thousand of them. So you walk in and your name is literally on the wall, alongside hundreds of other girls, so you don't ever have to doubt that you belong here.” - Emily Pilloton-Lam “What matters to me is that no matter where you end up, you've been in a place where you know what it feels like to be seen and respected. Then, you can go and demand that when you don't feel that way later.” - Emily Pilloton-Lam “It's actually incredibly hopeful to me when I think, what would the world look like if it was built by women or by more people of color or by people with differing physical abilities or people of different ages.” - Emily Pilloton-Lam “I firmly, firmly believe that a world designed by women is a world designed for everyone…women think about space and think about belonging and public space in a very different way, and it's often more equitable, often more communal and more considerate of the human experience..” - Emily Pilloton-Lam “Women are good for the world, period. We think communally, we think about our neighbor. We think about the lived experience of the people around us in a way that's really special and specific.” - Jen Hatmaker Guest's LinksEmily Pilloton-Lam's Website Girls Garage's Facebook Girls Garage's Instagram Resources Mentioned in This Episode Emily's Article “To Remake the World, Give Girls All the (Power) Tools” Girls Garage Website If You Build It Documentary Emily's Ted Talk "What If Women Built the World They Want to See" Girls Garage Book "How to Use Any Tool, Tackle Any Project, and Build the World You Want to See" Connect with Jen!Jen's website Jen's Instagram Jen's Twitter Jen's Facebook Jen's YouTube

Investing is one of the most common goals clients have at The Financial Gym and is a popular topic in financial media, especially as of late. There have been more questions than ever about investing, so on this episode of Financially Naked: Stories from The Financial Gym, two of our Certified Financial Trainers, Jazmin and Sydney sit down today to talk about it. They discuss the order of operations for creating a strong financial foundation and how to start your investing journey from there. Podcast Notes When it comes to investing, the best time to start is as early as you can, but there are a few other financial priorities to check off the list before diving in. At The Financial Gym, there is a specific order of operations Trainers typically recommend for clients. The first priority is an emergency fund. It is important to be prepared for the short term before investing in long-term goals. Learn more about emergency funds: Using Your Emergency Fund The next step is to address high-interest debt: usually credit cards or personal loans. Lower interest debt (like student loans) is a separate part of the conversation and is not as pressing as higher interest debt. Learn more about managing debt: Debt & Credit Management Gymsplained Once those first items on the checklist are taken care of, it is time to start investing! Often when people hear or think about investing, it is in regards to purchasing individual stocks or cryptocurrency. Before diving into those, start with retirement investing. Setting yourself up for the future should ideally come before other investment goals. If offered through the workplace, employer-sponsored 401k's (or 403b's, etc) are a great place to start. If you're contributing to a retirement plan, you are already an investor! If they offer a match, and it's within your budget to contribute up to that match, that is ideal. If a 401k isn't available through the workplace, or you're already maxing that out, the next account to consider, if you're eligible, is a Roth IRA. The next consideration would be other tax-advantaged accounts, such as 529 plans or Health Savings Accounts. Investing outside of retirement: The first step is to ask yourself the question: what am I investing for? It is important to figure out what you are investing for and the timeline for that goal. Asset allocation is a key part of investing, and the timeline is a huge part of deciding that. Bonds carry less risk than stocks, but stocks have a greater rate of return, so you want to have a little bit of both. For example, a shorter-term goal could be 75% stocks and 25% bonds. If the goal is 10+ years away, long-term asset allocation would look more like 90% stocks and 10% bonds. This is broad advice and it truly depends on a few variables including your personal risk level. Once you have the goal, put a system in place! It's about figuring out what works best for you and following those systems. Trainers typically recommend: Setting up recurring contributions and making them automatic. Automating is one of the best ways to stay on track. It's how most 401k plans are set up, and you can set that up for your other investment accounts too! If you are looking for an easy way to get started robo-advisors can be a great option. These are digital platforms that will help you invest money based on your goals and timeline. You answer some questions, and the algorithm does the work for you. Because they are doing the work for you, these robo-advisors generally have fees, but they are less intimidating, especially if you are just getting started. Investing is one of the most common goals among clients at The Financial Gym, and we know a lot of people want to dive in, but it can feel overwhelming. Things discussed: Michigan draft picks: DE production in college translates. Love Dax on the Bengals—fixes a major "you drafted a Buckeye cornerback" mistake. Nice to have the Ravens to snatch up any leftover Michigan players. So many Georgia picks: and the best player on that defense slipped to the 3rd round. Why? College football's playoff system had all the players who wanted to play in the playoffs collect in the three or four schools that make the playoffs with regularity. We're seeing a reflection of an unprecedented amount of talent pooling at the top. Frankie's transfer: people around him were oversensitive to playing time. He also wasn't very good on ball screens last year—and won't ever be a shooter. Was pretty clear Michigan needed another guard, and one of the reasons was to get some shooting on the floor when Michigan's down. Unfortunate that the state of things are such that a guy like Frankie can even consider going to Arizona State. Llewellyn is now a point guard—offense is going to run through Dickinson and be fine, but defense is now an issue, unless Kobe Bufkin takes some huge strides. Emoni Bates? Lol. Michigan wasn't interested; seems like Bates was but we already had forwards coming out of our ears. Hot take: he should have gone to MSU. NIL and Hunter Dickinson's comments: Glad to see someone at Michigan is finally taking leadership in the conversation. NCAA wants Congress to bail them out. Shouldn't be a Title IX issue if Michigan is facilitating payments, not making the payments themselves. Michigan *could* be awesome at this. We have donors who support the program rather than just look for access or ask "What do I get for my money?" and that makes us a more attractive school than a Texas, LSU, or Ole Miss where the donors want you to dance. Mel Pearson's contract? We don't know, but Michigan had their opportunity to run away, and we think they probably would have if they didn't have some belief—perhaps a verbal communication about the WilmerHale Report's contents—that they won't have to fire him. Can't discount the possibility that they're sweeping it under the rug, or twiddling their thumbs while they wait for the report to be published.
A guy named LUCKY dies and is raised from the dead. He is listing to Paul after midnight. He is sitting by the 3rd story window. He falls asleep. The power of sleep doesn't care if it is the great Paul speaking. Lucky falls out the window to his death. If Lucky is a believer, maybe Paul does him a disservice by yanking him back from paradise. If you are the one to demonstrate the exciting power of the newly marching Holy Spirit in this way, then it is no fun being you. If the Bible is true, then Paradise is better. But maybe Lucky really is favored in the Lord bringing him back. Maybe this 500 mile detour was really a destiny with the Lord's favor. Perhaps Lucky did not have faith yet. Maybe the Lord mercifully saved him and he indeed re-lived up to his name: Lucky! Whether you are new in the tech industry or are a veteran developer, chances are that you've used a product that Jeff Atwood worked on. I'm talking about Stack Overflow and Discourse, of course. When it comes to building communities and fostering good conversations, Jeff took an unusual position - steer the conversation towards finding the best in people, argue ideas and not people, and ultimately, contribute to a world that's just a bit better. How does it all work? Jeff elaborates in this episode.
We hear it time and time again: having the right attitude will take you far. Definitely an easy lesson to roll your eyes at when times get tough, but when you find yourself starting a new business or looking for a new career or job, having the right mindset is what sets apart the successful from the missed opportunities. Our guest today, Bryan Cressey, discusses how he has wired his brain after years of experience in the world of investing. He'll delve into the times he uses intuition versus analytics, how a good leader takes credit for the failures and gives credit where credit is due, and how risk taking is built into the foundation of our economy, so you might as well go for it. Bryan Cressey is a pioneer in the field of private equity investing and is co-founder of four of the largest private equity firms in the United States. He has managed billions of dollars of private capital and is well known for generating consistently strong investment returns. A member of the Chicago Business Hall of Fame, and Chicago Area Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame, Bryan received his BS in Economics at the University of Washington and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School and a JD from Harvard Law School. With over 40 years of experience, Bryan's leadership has been recognized by Fortune and Time magazines and was the subject of a feature article in Harvard Law Today. He is highly sought out to speak nationwide on healthcare, its future, and private equity investing. He serves on the board of many companies and was Chairman of Belden, a NYSE company.

The following is a conversation between Christen Brandt, Co-Founder of She's the First, and Co-author of Impact: A Step-by-Step Plan to Create the World You Want to Live In, and Denver Frederick, the Host of The Business of Giving. All over the world, girls are treated as second to boys. Far too often, girls are denied an education, told who and when to marry, and blocked from leadership positions. Educated and respected girls are the exception, not the norm. That is why the organization my next guest helps lead puts girls first. She is Christen Brandt, co-founder and COO of She's the First and co-author of Impact: A Step-by-Step Plan to Create the World You Want to Live In.

We hear another one of Jesus' stories about farming. Farming is hard work and failure is a frequent reality. This time, the farmer does the best he can, but weeds invade the garden. The problem can't be fixed. You don't have to be a farmer to know that some problems can't be fixed. What do we do when things have gone so wrong we can't make them right? Rev. If you're fortunate enough to have savings, you've probably thought about how to invest them responsibly. The standard answer is to stick your money into no-load mutual funds that track the market and leave it there for as long as possible. Low risk because of the diversification. Low fee because there's no genius managing your money, just an algorithm. And high return because over the long term, it's almost impossible to beat the market. What could possibly be wrong with that?

Hilary talks with Julie Robbins, CEO of EarthQuaker Devices, one of the biggest little pedal companies in the business. They discuss shutting down “the swimsuit edition”, what it's REALLY like to be a CEO, and tips for music gear diversity and inclusion at NAMM and beyond! Plus, sexual harassment training. JULIE'S BIO Julie Robbins is an American business woman, entrepreneur, and chief executive officer of effects pedal manufacturer EarthQuaker Devices, top-six in the U.S. and one of the top-10 in the world, which she owns with her husband EarthQuaker Devices President Jamie Stillman. Robbins is responsible for stewardship of the production, management, marketing and international sales for the company. She is also a champion of female and LGBTQ musicians and entrepreneurs. EarthQuaker Devices are available in over 865 retail locations in approximately 50 countries and its key retailers include Guitar Center, Sam Ash, Sweetwater and Thomann. The company has sold approximately 250,000 units. At age 18, Robbins became the mother to a son; one month before her high school graduation. She enrolled in Baldwin Wallace's Single Parents Reaching Out for Unassisted Tomorrows, or SPROUT program in 1997, which allowed her to live on campus year-round for the price of room and board. While at the school, Robbins earned a Bachelor's Degree in economics and a minor in political science. Robbins also created and managed an artist management and booking company called Musical Adventures from 2000 until 2003 providing booking services for 50 bands, including Liars, Xiu Xiu, Flying Luttenbachers, and Stillman's The Party of Helicopters. After a serious health scare in 2003, she took a job at a local bank as a branch banker, eventually working her way up to a position as a financial planner (2008). She was halfway through certification as a certified public accountant when in 2012, and as EarthQuaker Devices occupied every inch of space in her family's basement, she left her day job to join EarthQuaker Devices as it's full-time business manager. The company's current workforce currently reaches over 50 individuals, and has been praised for its commitment to inclusion, diversity and cooperation with other pedal manufacturers by Best Guitar Effects. In this edition of Thinking Deeply with Dudes and Beer host Christopher Jordan is joined by award winning producer and host of Marathon Mondays, Billy Dorsey to discuss manifestation, positivity and making the world you want. What is the concept of manifestation? Is it something reserved only for stories and fairytales or can we actually manifest things in our life? What importance does positivity play in our life on a daily basis? Are we actively trying to be positive or do we allow ourselves to be sucked into the negative agendas of mainstream media and social media, thereby preventing us from attaining the enlightenment and growth we seek? What does it take to begin to make actively make and change the world we live in so we as a Human race can live in a more perfect harmony? These questions and more pondered in this episode of Thinking Deeply with Dudes and Beer.
