Transformative Leadership Conversations with Winnie da Silva
Season 3; Episode 3: Storytelling is Our Most Powerful Tool for Change with Holly GordonHolly Gordon is the Chief Impact Officer at Participant Media, overseeing the company's social impact strategy and campaigns, furthering Participant's mission to create storytelling that inspires positive social change. Prior to Participant, Holly co-founded Girl Rising, a global campaign for girls' education. Holly was also an Executive Producer for Girl Rising, the film at the center of the movement. Forbes Magazine named the Girl Rising campaign the #1 Most Dynamic Social Initiative of 2012. Holly was selected by Fast Company as a member of the League of Extraordinary Women and named by Newsweek/Daily Beast as one of 125 Women of Impact. Earlier in her career, Holly was a producer at ABC News.Key Takeaways from this Episode:The Power of Storytelling · Use the power of storytelling to make the world a better place by inspiring, empowering, and connecting community leaders on the front lines of change. · Stories live inside you, they become purpose when they are expressed outside of you. Change happens when you share that story with someone and you make an agreement to do the thing, it is not an individual sport. Storytelling is our most powerful tool for change.· In everything we do, we're telling ourselves a story about what is fixed versus what is changeable. They are powerful stories that are usually reinforced by society. Think about the story you're telling yourself, and then challenge yourself with a different way of thinking.· You can move people from their seats to the streets with amazing stories. Inspire, Empower, Connect· Emotions are really important in leadership. Activating emotions are hope and inspiration that make you feel activated towards something. They are a motivating force.· Empower: before we do anything, we ask ourselves, can I do it? You need to create the tools, opportunities, or pathways for people to move from inspired to action. · Connection between people is core to making change in any organization or structure. The question that you're answering is, what is everyone else doing? People who believe the same things, catalyze them, give them an opportunity, and then connect them to each other. And then you've got a movement!· Persuasion vs. Telling: Persuasion is often confused with telling. Persuasion is what happens between sharing a vision and then waiting, listening for the response. It's hearing people, their fears and hopes, and listening enough that you have persuaded them to join the fight.Leadership· I wake up and I ask, how can I be of service? If you ask yourself that question, you never go wrong, because your incentives are oriented towards setting a vision and listening to what others need in support of it. · Leadership is about understanding what people are afraid of and trying to make a consistently supportive environment. Does everyone on the team have what they need to bring their full gifts to our work?· The history of leadership has been very much about who's holding power, being right, and who has the answers. In the 21st century, leadership is all about choice. Our employees have many choices about where they can work. Leadership becomes a more humanistic-focused effort about communication and understanding. It's a re-imagining of capitalism, from a shareholder perspective to a stakeholder perspective. · Leadership leans into vision. It is about telling a story of possibility that other people can imagine and buy into (e.g., Martin Luther King, Jr.). A challenge to achieve something that's just out of reach, but possible.· Management is the process, systems, structures, and the operational nuts and bolts of getting multiple people to achieve that vision. It's the marriage of vision and management that goes from being a single actor to a leader of an organization. Leadership is about relationships and partnership. Globally, 130 million girls are out of school. But, with this glaring statistic also comes a mountain of evidence showing that girls' education is the most powerful investment towards eradicating poverty. Educated women are more likely to invest in their families and send their children to school. That meant, educating a girl had a ripple effect that lasted across generations. While working on a documentary film, Christina Lowery came across this data and decided to bring this truth to the broader public. Today, Christina leads Girl Rising as the nonprofit organization’s CEO. Girl Rising uses the power of storytelling to ensure that girls around the world are educated and empowered. What began as a film about nine unforgettable girls, written by award-winning authors and voiced by some of Hollywood's biggest celebrities, grew into an organization that has impacted 200,000 adolescents, alongside 120 partners in 11 countries. In this episode, we also hear from Girl Rising’s Vice President of Programs Judithe Registre. On the podcast, Judithe discusses the power of storytelling as a catalyst for change. Kindness Quote from Judithe Registre: “The very act of actually getting to know people through their stories is an act of kindness and engagement. It's you showing up with some degree of vulnerability — seeing you in your power, seeing you just as who you are, our presence in the world, that you belong in the world.” Learn more about Girl Rising: girlrising.org -- Learn more about the programs at Riley's Way Foundation and how you can join the Call for Kindness. She recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of her debut book which chronicled her survival as a young child during the Khmer Rouge genocide from 1975-1979. This book would later be turned into a Netflix film in 2017 that Angelina Jolie would direct. In this interview, she shared her reflections writing this book, and how this has aided in her healing from her childhood trauma from the genocide, and her relationship with Cambodia in her visits since the book. She reminisced on her time working with Angelina and her son Maddox on the film, and their friendship together. You can follow Loung's work at https://www.loungung.com and her Twitter @UngLoung. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Season 4 is sponsored by Red Scarf Revolution (RSR). With that awareness, Red Scarf Revolution advocates the silenced art, music, culture, and language, with designs that incite the resiliency of the Cambodian people. Four years later, in one of the bloodiest genocides of the 20th century, an estimated 2 million died under the regime. Among the victims were Loung's parents, two sisters, and 20 other relatives. In 1980, Loung, her older brother Meng and his wife, Eang, relocated as refugees to America. In her first memoir, the national best-seller First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers, Loung tells the story of her survival in Cambodia's Killing Fields. Her second book, Lucky Child, details her life as a refugee in Vermont and her sister Chou's as a displaced person in Cambodia. In her third book, Lulu in the Sky, Loung chronicles her 1995 return to Cambodia as an activist to ban landmines, and her reunion with the family she left behind. Since then, she has made over forty trips back to Cambodia. Today, she has shared her messages of resilience, healing, civic service, activism, and leadership across the world. She has spoken at schools, universities, and organizations. Loung is a contributing writer for the groundbreaking film Girl Rising, which profiles nine girls from nine countries, including Cambodia, who are struggling against odds to achieve an education. This episode is a very SPECIAL EARLY RELEASE. We recorded season 3 just a few weeks ago. All of our conversations in season 3 were around Covid-19. We wanted to release this episode early since some of the conversation revolved around time sensitive measures. We talked to Karen Cahn from IFundWomen who is working hard to keep women owned businesses doing what they do. Karen Cahn is the Founder & CEO of IFundWomen, a startup funding platform for women entrepreneurs. The mission of IFundWomen is to close the funding and confidence gap by providing a full-stack solution including crowdfunding, grants, expert business coaching, and a vibrant community of women business owners collaborating on how to win. Karen is a pioneer in tech and media. She was an early Google Intrapreneur where she spent 10 years leading various monetization teams in search, display, and video. Most notably, Karen started the Branded Entertainment business at YouTube, when, back in the olden times of YouTube 2006, she and a rogue group of sales and product managers, made the connection between big consumer brands and video creators, thus creating the first native video ad experiences monetized on YouTube. After a historic 10 year run at Google, Karen spent three years as General Manager of AOL Original Video, and was responsible for business strategy and strategic partnerships. In this role, Karen built AOL’s female creative economy in video and as a result, nabbed AOL its first-ever Emmy nod. Karen is an active angel investor in her own right and through Golden Seeds. Karen is on the board of advisors of Girl Rising, an organization dedicated to girls education in developing countries. She is also on the Springboard Media Council and invests her “human capital” in their pipeline of high-growth, women-led companies. Karen holds a BA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, double majoring in African-American Studies and US History. Originally from the suburbs of Boston, Karen migrated to New York City in 1998 to be a part of the early days of the digital media revolution with Salon.com. When she's not working, Karen can be found in her kitchen in Montclair, NJ baking Toll House cookies with her kids (because there is no substitute for Toll House), or outside doing something sporty like playing golf, yoga, tennis, tetherball, or any sport involving a ball and a bat. Today, women continue to be undervalued and underrepresented in the art world. On our podcast today, we have Liezel Strauss, Co-Founder and Creative Director of Subject Matter, an online art gallery that empowers artists and works to address inequalities in the art world. A recent survey of 18 prominent art museums in the US found that, out of 10,000 artists featured, 87 percent are male and 85 are white. Moreover, women on average earn 81¢ for every dollar made by male artists. Subject Matter campaigns for fair pay for artists, curating all-women shows, mentoring female artists and so much more. In this episode, Liezel will share with us the story behind an initiative she started called Art Girl Rising. She will also talk about the barriers that women face in the industry, and what we can all do to support women artists. We interview Dr. Shefali Tsabary the author of the The Conscious Parent (with a forward written by the Dalai Lama) and her new book Out of Control which questions why and how we discipline children. Some of the issues we discuss with Dr. Shefali: - What are the first steps we can take to become a more conscious parent? - What prevents us from being the parent that we want to be? - Why most discipline strategies don't work. How parenting our children can help us heal our past wounds. - How to release guilt when we recognize our parenting challenges are less about our children issues and more about our issues. - Can our children be an instrument for our own personal growth? - How do we release the power of natural consequences? When I do the annual job of washing the windows in my house, I always say without exception, "I never realized they were that dirty." I can now see how green the trees are, how blue the sky is. We see the world through our own filter. Our soul needs to to be cleaned as well by doing things such as reading books, working with a therapist, meditating, taking a mindful walk, etc. These are all actions that can give us a better perception of the world. Conversely—if you are filling your thoughts/heart with negative things, that is the world that you will see. If we can all make this shift, our lives will be happier because of it. We share some resources that may help including Mark Nope's "Book of Awakening" , Gary Chapman's "5 Love Languages" and the documentary Man on Wire (trailer is below). In the second half of our show (22:48 mark) - I go over 11 mistakes I have made in my 11 years of being a husband. We discuss each one and share some stories. They are (in no particular order): I made up for my ineptitude with grand gestures. I spoke a different language. I fixed her problems. I thought we were the same. I let her pass me by. I did not put her on the calendar I thought we were supposed to grow together. I let things roll off my back. I talked down to her in the presence of others. I made a big deal when I did something nice. I didn't fight fair. We interview Josh Becker, a teacher for Breakthrough for Men and host of the I Simply Am podcast. Breakthrough for Men is dedicated to making real change in the quality of men's lives. We discuss why it's much more difficult to gather a group of men (vs. women) for the purpose of self exploration. Josh helps redefine the definition of manhood - society encourages men to be strong and not vulnerable, intelligent and not thoughtful, powerful and not beautiful. And men are using unhealthy coping mechanisms (alcohol, drugs, sex, gaming, gambling) to to deal with their unrecognized feelings and challenges. Josh can be found here and information on Breakthrough for Men can be found here. How can women help men open up? If and when your husband shows any sense of vulnerability, do not use it against them or make fun of them in any way, and create a safe and trusting environment for your husband to express emotions. Men need to know they're safe before opening up. How can men open up? Take a look at the people you surround yourself with. Is it based soley upon alcohol and sports? If you find that it's less fulfilling than it used to be, it might be time to find a group of men that have some other interest. Can't find one? Check this out - I Simply Am blog/podcast by Josh Becker Todd, Cathy, & Josh play a random question game - find out their answers to these questions: What is one thing you wish you knew 20 years ago that you know now? Among the topics of todays podcast: We discuss a blog title "Is Disney TV poisoning our kids"? Some people thinks so. Some shows are OK, whereas others are just not good for your kids to be watching. Where's the balance between prohibiting certain shows for your kids and letting them figure out for themselves what is good/bad and then having a discussion about the shows. We contrast the "perfection" of the female actresses of Disney TV vs. what was popular in our day such as the girls on Facts of Life or even current shows such as Modern Family. The blog can be found here The badness of the cartoon "Might Mouse" and the goodness of Captain Caveman. See clips below- Lastly Santa pays a visit to ZPR. In the spirit of the holiday season they discuss other forms of forgiveness - to ourselves and others. They illustrate this with the story of the two monks. and they also talk a lot about Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. As we age, our heroes evolve - Todd's hero growing up was Walter Payton, but now he is in awe of others such as Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, and a man named Chuck Feeney.
