Join Murray Robinson and Shane Gibson in a conversation with Daniel Mezick about open leadership. What motivates people and how to get great results in a group. Organizations are social games with goals, rules and players with different resources and decision rights. Most organizations are totalitarian dictatorships with a heavy management tax. Open organizations are much more effective at harnessing the talents of their people and resources. Harness peoples talents by giving them an attractive goal, clear boundaries, leadership support and the right to make decisions about their own work. Be generous, calm and support your people.

Disruption and change have been with us forever. But disruption and change at work, in business, in organizations—somehow it seems harder. It's unpredictable, it's uncertain, and it's stressful. And we often back away from it as a result. In her conversation with Jesse, Charlene Li reflects on a career spent empowering everyone—from frontline workers to CEOs—to embrace and move forward in the face of disruptive change. She discusses her experience growing up in Michigan as a woman of color, and how it led her to embrace her own disruptive nature. She describes the structural attributes and convictions that allowed organizations like Adobe, Amazon, and Southern New Hampshire University to see the needs of their future customers - and overcome deeply entrenched barriers and elements of the status quo to serve them. And she offers a poignant look at why organizations in every industry must embrace Diversity and Inclusion now if they are to reach their potential for growth and impact. For the past two decades, Charlene Li has been helping people see the future. She’s the author of six books, including the New York Times bestseller Open Leadership and the co-author of the critically-acclaimed book Groundswell. Her latest book is the bestseller The Disruption Mindset. She founded Altimeter Group, an analyst firm that was acquired in 2015 by Prophet. Named by Fast Company as one of the most creative people in business, Charlene is an expert on digital transformation. In this episode we talked about three mindset shifts leaders in organizations need to make to lead effectively in disruptions: openness, agency and bias for action. We spoke about what leadership is. It’s not about hierarchy. Leadership is simply a relationship between people who aspire to lead and create change and people who are inspired to follow them. Here is one of my favorite quotes from her latest book. You can get a free copy here.“There will be times when the way forward will be illuminated by what feels like a penlight in the dark night. There will be times when you will doubt the course you have chosen. And there will be times when the entire world seems aligned against you. Use these setbacks as opportunities to learn. Your vision of the future will provide you with the solace, inspiration, and strength to continue. Never cease believing that what you are doing is worth the pain and confusion that is the natural course of disruption.”

Charlene explains the how and the why behind disruption, and shares relevant case studies that bring the concept of disruption to life in a more tangible way. She also illustrates how growth creates disruption, not the other way around, and why defining your future customer is a critical aspect of growth and innovation. Conversation with Charlene Li, named by Fast Company as one of the most creative people in business, a keynote speaker, the founder of Altimeter Group, a New York Times bestselling author of six books including her newest “The Disruption Mindset: Why Some Businesses Transform While Others Fail”, “Open Leadership”, as well as co-author of the critically-acclaimed book, “Groundswell”.
Today my guest is Charlene Li. Charlene is a graduate of Harvard and of Harvard Business School, she's been named one of the most creative people in business by Fast Company, and she's an expert in digital transformation and disruptive growth strategies. Charlene has just released a new book called, The Disruption Mindset: Why Some Organizations Transform Why Others Fail. Charlene is a founder of and a Senior Fellow at Altimeter, which is a Profit company. She is the author of five previous books including a New York Times bestseller, Open Leadership; and the co-author of the critically acclaimed book Groundswell. I love how she explains that we've been approaching disruption backwards. In my conversation with her, we talk about how companies make disruption their goal, but they believe that if they develop the right innovation, they will disrupt the markets forever and drive the kind of growth worthy of what their Board of Directors wants. But, as Charlene explains to me that it's not how disruption works. Disruption doesn't create growth. Instead she talks about how growth creates disruption. I love how she hits it across the head when she says, growth is hard. She's not mincing words here. Disruptive growth is exponentially harder. It requires companies to make tough decisions in the face of daunting uncertainties and answer questions like, ‘should we bet our company's future on the next generation customers or today's reliable ones? Should we abandon our current business model for an entirely new one? Making these bold changes demands leadership and often massive cultural transformation. We talk about leadership, and that in this type of disruptive companies, strategy trumps everything and how we need to meet the future needs of our customers. That leadership requires a movement to drive and sustain. It requires consistency. You can't whiffle-waffle as a leader. She talks about the consistency of the best transformation leaders and culture, of course, culture. We talk about culture, something she calls flux culture. Also, we discuss her concept of a dashboard. Many of you are digital leaders, but what do your dashboards look like? Charlene gets into specifics on what a true disruptive organization should have in there... the entire company is looking at it as it relates to their dashboard. You're going to love the envisioning exercise we talk about with envisioning your future customer. I love to speak with book authors like Charlene because we're taking 30 years’ worth of meeting some of the best, most transformative conversations and experiences, and distilling it into a book and a conversation. Charlene and I discuss ten powerful stories, concepts, ideas and strategies from this amazing book. Here are some of things that you will learn in this podcast episode. Specific leadership strategies that Jeff Bezos deploys at Amazon which allows him to build and scale an enormous company. The importance of a flux culture and its positive impact in a disruptive company. An amazing example of envisioning future customers. How one must lead moving forward in times of exponential change. The power of Dashboards in disruptive and innovative companies. The super power of disruption leaders to instill hope and confidence. Disruption doesn’t create growth. Growth creates disruption. Innovative companies vs. disruptive companies What is the role of the CIO – moving forward? Breakthrough growth shifts the balance of power and of established relationships. She works for the Mozilla Foundation where she is a practice lead working Open. She has been named in “100 Awesome Women in Open source” and mentioned in Github’s State of the Octoverse 2016. Abigail begins by sharing some of how she got started and what interests her in technology. The discussion then moves to altmetrics and how Abigail helps people publish code and get recognition for their work. Richard asks Abigail how her work for mozilla fits into the type of work she is known for. Abigail shares that Mozilla is much more than the Firefox browser that it is known for. Abigail shares that “Mozilla’s mission is to ensure that the Internet is a global, public resource” that is “open and accessible to all”. This mission at Mozilla goes back to the browser wars of the early 2000’s when they created Firefox to ensure that a web browser was available to all. Abigail goes into further detail how the Mozilla foundation helps to further the internet and open source as well as what she is currently working on. The next topic covered by the open source experts is the tooling used by Mozilla to maintain privacy. Abigail notes that some of the issues that prevent a healthy internet are privacy and security, openness, decentralization, web literacy, and digital inclusion. She shares that Mozilla is very conscious of protecting users and how they walk the line between privacy and openness. They also discuss how Abigail grows leaders in the community. She shares how it starts with identifying potential leaders and how she finds them. Currently Abigail is teaching a course on how leaders can run their own versions of Mozilla’s Open Leaders through an online program that meets every two weeks. Abigail goes through the details of how the Open Leaders program works. Eric then asks Abigail to explain what openness means to her. She shares that openness and movement building really work together. They are means of rallying people together and empowering them to work towards a shared goal. Openness means to both be public and participatory and be active in the community. Richard follows up by agreeing that openness means to be participatory and is a pillar of open source. Abigail adds that as a leader it is very important to be able to delegate tasks and entrust responsibility to other members of the group. She goes on to say that it is vital to open source sustainability for others to be able to contribute to a project. The panelists then lead into a discussion on why maintainers leave a project and what happens when they do. Eric asks Abigail how to teach someone to delegate to which she explains that it is important to help people see how a broader community with diverse perspectives can help propel a project forward. To get contributors to stick around, it is important to give them ownership over a piece of a project. This episode of Sustain our Software features Abigail Cabunoc Mayes. Abigail has a background in bioinformatics and computer science and has an interest in using computers to solve problems in biology. DeLisa Alexander is the Chief People Officer at Red Hat, a role she has held since March 2011. She is responsible for leading Red Hat’s global Human Capital team, including Red Hat University College of Leadership and Management. She joined Red Hat in 2001 and served in the office of General Counsel until 2006. In that role, DeLisa was responsible for equity and executive compensation and employment matters. Prior to Red Hat, she was associated with the law firm Kilpatrick Stockton where she focused on mergers, acquisitions, venture capital and licensing. DeLisa graduated with a BBA from James Madison University, holds an MBA from University of Baltimore, and earned her Juris Doctor from George Mason University. Red Hat is a leading software company in the business of assembling open source components for the Linux operating system and related programs into a distribution package that can be ordered and implemented. They currently employ about 13,000 associates, with about 25% of the population working remotely. They have over 95 offices in 35 countries around the world. Red Hat has been studying, implementing, and experimenting with a concept called open leadership and it has drastically changed how the company operates. They found that traditional, top down, hierarchical leadership did not work for their company and they knew they had to try something different. What is open leadership? DeLisa says first of all, “They tend to have a growth mindset where they think everyone has something special to contribute. Everyone has something unique they can offer. And that a leader's role, whether it's a manager or a team lead or a technical lead their role is to act in an inclusive way. And a way that really brings out that individual's strengths and help them to contribute their unique talents.” Open leaders will also see untapped potential in all of their employees. They believe that everyone is capable of learning and growing, they understand that it is their role as a leader to create an atmosphere where employees can learn, grow, and stretch themselves. Red Hat also believes that leaders don’t necessarily have to be be managers of people. Anyone can be a leader. A leader is not defined by a title or position within the company, a leader is defined by their ability to influence others. For organizations looking to implement the concept of open leadership DeLisa advises, “It's not a one size fits all. Open, is a continuum. So if you start from where you are and think about where you'd like to move, what I recommend always is understand the strengths of your organization, understand your organization's purpose, and really lean into the areas that are strengths for you that can help you to support that purpose more effectively by making some shifts. I always find that when you're trying to close a gap, it's much more difficult than leading into something that's your strength already.” What you will learn In This Episode: How DeLisa went from the legal field to the HR space Big trends DeLisa is paying attention to DeLisa’s view on Millennials A look at the culture at Red Hat How Red Hat used stories from their own employees to create their company’s mission statement What open leadership is Links from the episode: Red Hat LinkedIn

Welcome to episode #372 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. Jeremiah Owyang is paying less attention to social business and much more to what has been called, The Collaborative Economy. He believes that the time is rip and that the collaborative economy is going to change everything (again). He's currently Partner of Customer Strategy at Altimeter Group, a research based advisory firm started by Charlene Li (Groundswell and Open Leadership). I've been following Jeremiah (and admiring him) since his days at Forrester Research and was one of the earlier readers/fans of his blog, Web Strategist. In June of this year, he launched his latest research report called, The Collaborative Economy. This is how Owyang explains it: "Right now, customers are sharing media and ideas on social technologies, in the near future, they'll use similar technologies to share products and services, which will cause a ripple of impacts far more disruptive than what we've seen before." Think about Uber, AirBnB and even Netflix. A world where we share stuff... not own it (a space that has been blossoming since the social Web was first introduced). I spent an afternoon with Owyang a few weeks back in Menlo Park (but we recorded this conversation prior to that). He's got a great mind for business, technology and marketing.
