At last, the story of the 1994 Largo Invitational. The Largo boys and Lakewood girls won the races, but that's not what people recall about the day, Oct. 12, at Taylor Park. "About as bad as it gets," one coach said. Another coach told meet officials that his own team should be disqualified. Come along for the run with the retelling of events from multiple eyewitnesses and participants.

Brett Hoffman, Mike Warre, Bob Braman, three runners who grew up amid the running boom, met on the new course at Largo's Taylor Park in a highly anticipated and hotly contested 3-mile race. The times they ran in fall 1975 came from the miles they ran in training, sometimes earning them more than funny looks when they hit the road at odd hours. Their recollection of that era and the times they posted show why all the miles absolutely mattered. Music credit: "Summer of 1984" by RKVC
Police officials say four people have been killed in a shooting at a Tulsa medical building on a hospital campus. Since January, 76 people have been killed in 12 mass shootings in the United States. Tulsa Police Department Deputy Chief Eric Dalgleish confirmed the number of dead Wednesday in the latest wave of mass gun violence occurring across the country. He also said the shooter was dead, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The motive for the attack was unclear. St. Francis Health System locked down its campus Wednesday afternoon because of the situation at the Natalie Medical Building. The Natalie building houses an outpatient surgery center and a breast health center. The House is preparing gun legislation in response to mass shootings by 18-year-olds in Texas and New York. The House Judiciary Committee is holding a hearing Thursday on a bill that would raise the age limit for purchasing a semi-automatic centerfire rifle from 18 to 21. The bill would also make it a federal offense to manufacture or possess large-capacity magazines, and would create a grant program to buy back such magazines. The Senate is unlikely to take up the bill, but the measure provides Democratic lawmakers a marker to show voters their efforts to curb mass shootings. Among the latest headlines out of the war in Ukraine: Russian forces now control most of Sieverodonetsk. The United Kingdom is also pledging to send more defense systems to Ukraine. Turkey's state-run news agency says Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has sent a letter to the United Nations formally requesting that his country be referred to as “Türkiye.” The move is seen as part of a push by Ankara to rebrand the country and dissociate its name from the bird, turkey, and some negative connotations that are associated with it. The white man accused of killing 10 Black people in a racist attack on a Buffalo, New York, supermarket has been indicted by a grand jury on a state domestic terrorism and hate crime charge that would carry a mandatory sentence of life in prison. Payton Gendron, who has been in custody since the May 14 shooting, is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in Erie County Court. Gendron had previously been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting, which also injured three people. He has pleaded not guilty. The New York Rangers take the opener of the Stanley Cup Eastern Conference Finals, the Chicago Cubs win in extra innings,Tomas Nido has a big night on offense leading the New York Mets and Nolan Arenado powers St. Louis to a win. A jury has awarded Johnny Depp more than $10 million in his libel lawsuit against ex-wife Amber Heard. It vindicates his stance that Heard fabricated claims that she was abused by Depp before and during their brief marriage. The jury also found in favor of Heard, who said she was defamed by a lawyer for Depp who accused her of creating a detailed hoax that included roughing up their apartment to look worse for police. Jury members decided Heard should receive $2 million. Depp sued Heard for libel in Virginia over a 2018 op-ed she wrote describing herself as “a public figure representing domestic abuse.” President Joe Biden is acknowledging the strain on families from nationwide shortages of infant formula. He's meeting manufacturers while his administration tries to address the situation by importing foreign supplies and using the Defense Production Act to speed domestic production. The White House says a third round of formula shipments from overseas will begin next week, from producer Kendamil in Britain. Shipments from Bubs Australia will be delivered next week as well. Biden says, "There's nothing more stressful than feeling you can't get what your child needs.” The president says that as a “father and a grandfather,” he understands how difficult the shortages have been for parents and their children. Sheryl Sandberg, the No. 2 exec at Facebook owner Meta, is stepping down, according to a post Wednesday on her Facebook page. Sandberg has served as chief operating officer at the social media giant for 14 years. She joined from Google in 2008, four years before Facebook went public. Meta did not immediately respond to a message for comment. Sandberg has led Facebook — now Meta's — advertising business and was responsible for nurturing it from its infancy into an over $100 billion-a-year powerhouse. The white-hot demand for U.S. workers cooled a bit in April, though the number of unfilled jobs remains high and companies are still desperate to hire more people. Employers advertised 11.4 million jobs at the end of April, the Labor Department said Wednesday, down from nearly 11.9 million in March, the highest level on records that date back 20 years. At that level, there are nearly two job openings for every unemployed person. That's a sharp reversal from the historic pattern: Before the pandemic, there were always more unemployed people than available jobs. President Joe Biden is hailing Adm. Linda Fagan as new Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard and the armed forces' first female service chief. He declared during a change of command ceremony on Wednesday, “It's about time.” Biden said that “the trailblazing career of Admiral Fagan shows young people entering the services, we mean what we say: There are no doors — no doors — closed to women.” As new abortion restrictions are imposed in some parts of the U.S., states with more liberal leadership have been passing laws to let a wider range of medical providers to do the procedures. The goal has been to expand the pool of certified providers, partly to be prepared for a possible influx of out-of-state patients, but also to reduce wait times for in-state patients and improve access for underserved communities. The efforts have taken on new urgency in recent months amid doubt over the durability of the landmark Roe v. Wade decision in another example of diverging state policies on abortion. A Florida man has been identified after authorities say he waded into a lake inhabited by alligators to find Frisbees and other flying discs to sell. The Largo Police Department said Sean Thomas McGuinness, 47, was found Tuesday morning at the Taylor Park lake by someone walking a dog. Although the exact cause of death is unknown, police said McGuinness suffered injuries involving alligators. Authorities say McGuinness was known to frequent Taylor Park, home to a disc golf course adjacent to the lake. That was where McGuinness would find Frisbees and other discs that he could resell. Las Vegas chapels of love that use Elvis Presley's likeness could find themselves becoming Heartbreak Hotels. The licensing company that controls the name and image of Elvis is ordering some Sin City chapel operators to stop using Elvis in themed wedding ceremonies. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that Authentic Brands Group sent cease-and-desist letters in early May to multiple chapels. Wedding operators are expected to be compliant by now. With Elvis closely tied to the Las Vegas wedding industry, some chapel owners say the move could decimate their businesses. —The Associated Press See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Good Morning, Colorado, you're listening to the Daily Sun-Up with the Colorado Sun. It's Monday September 6th. Today - A self proclaimed “Lakes Geek” makes satellite-view comparisons of lakes all over the world. But why is his work so important to Colorado? But first -- We'd like to thank our sponsor, Pinnacol Assurance. Pinnacol provides caring workers' comp insurance. They were also named one of the most community-minded companies in Colorado. Pinnacol gives back through community investments, scholarships and apprenticeships. At Pinnacol, caring is more than kindness. It's their powertool. See how they put care to work at Pinnacol.com Before we begin, let's go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett's book “Colorado Day by Day”: Today we're going back to September 6th, 1920 when Jack Dempsey defended his world heavyweight title against Billy Miske in the first ever boxing match broadcast by radio. Dempsey hailed from Manassa, a Mormon farming colony in Conejos County though his childhood was fairly migratory going from one Colorado town to the next. They found their greatest success in Montrose when his mother took the family reins. He'd return to Colorado to begin his boxing career and would spar in Aspen, Gunnison, Durango, Telluride, Victor, Leadville and more before he worked his way up to being heavyweight champion, a title he held from 1919 until 1926. Now, our feature story. A self-described “lakes geek” makes satellite-view comparisons of lakes all over the world as part of his hobby, a website that he calls “Lakepedia.” Why is that important to Colorado? As reporter Michael Booth explains, he's offering us before-and-after satellite photos of Blue Mesa, Taylor Park and other major reservoirs, with a slider that lets the viewer see the changes to the shorelines from before the state's prolonged drought to now. The Sun's Kevin Simpson took a few minutes to chat with Michael about the images. You can check out the time-lapse images of major lakes in the West today at coloradosun.com. Thanks for listening. We hope you enjoy your day off this Labor Day! For more information on all of these stories, visit our website, www.coloradosun.com. Now, a quick message from our editor. Yon Iacchio grew up on the East Coast like so many other residents of the Gunnison Valley. After a little bit of time at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Yon stayed and skied and climbed up and down the front range- even putting up a new climbing route in Venezuela. Recently, Yon and his wife purchased the Tomichi Creek Trading Post in Sargents. Sargents is located on the West side of Monarch Pass. One of the great things about the Gunnison valley is our access to outdoor recreation in three major mountain ranges. Crested Butte is in the Elk Mountains, Lake City is located 45 miles South of Gunnison in the San Juan range, while Sargents and Taylor Park are hubs for adventure in the Sawatch Range. In this episode, Yon and I talk about the recreational opportunities in Sargents- including a free Nordic skiing track that he's been working on. It's a great story involving a partnership between a local ranch owner, a Uranium mine located up Marshall Pass, and the Tomichi Creek Trading Post. Enjoy this episode and check out the Trading Post the next time you're in the area. Crested Butte Real Estate Minute: The Crested Butte real estate market has been busy the first month of 2020. Compared to the same time last year, there are far more properties under contract, and a higher dollar volume as well. Is this a sign of how things will be in 2020? Time will tell... In the season finale, Reggie has to figure out how to wrap up the Taylor Park mystery and how to get her friends back together. And, once the truth is revealed to the whole town, even the mayor has something to say to our young detectives.
With only a few holes left in the Taylor Park mystery, Reggie leads her friends to the library, where they’ll need a creative plan to sneak into the Special Collections room. But when they argue over how far they’re willing to go to solve the mystery, Reggie realizes she could lose her friends for good.
The gang starts piecing together all the spooky stories and local legends about the mysterious Taylor Park. Unfortunately, that means they’ll have to talk to Cranky Joe Parsons—the oldest, wrinkliest man in town. But he just might help them unravel the mystery.
After the disastrous midnight trip to Taylor Park, Reggie, Lisa, Maya, and Henry come up with a new plan for figuring out the mystery of the human bone. This time, their travels land them downtown at the university, where a grave encounter leaves them wondering what to do next.
