Sean and Paul are thrilled to have spent three hours in the company of a 10cc legend in the past few weeks. Rick Fenn has, for no fewer than 45 years, been a core part of 10cc’s live set-up, as well as taking part in most of their post-Deceptive studio projects. A consummate musician. he sees himself as a guitarist, but his mastery of most other instruments is stunning: among them piano and synths, bass, even saxophone! Starting his musical career in Cambridge, he moved to Manchester in 1976, and our story starts with a remarkable TV appearance that sees Rick lock (Dorking) horns with someone who’s quite simply his musical opposite... The rest is history of course, but we won’t spoil the surprise! Rick gives us so many remarkably candid insights into his time with 10cc. His uncanny audition, the joys of the first tour and recording Bloody Tourists, the stark contrast with Look Hear, and the fall-out from Eric’s tragic accident in 1979, including the deteriorating relationship between Eric and Graham. We continue the story up until the Ten Out of Ten sessions, and we’ll pick up from here next time. We hope (and expect!) that you really enjoy this episode. We’re excited about the next pod too, where we explore Rick’s incredibly prolific career with other artists as session and live player, and his less well-known core business of commercial soundtracks and musical theatre composer. This chap’s truly been round the block!
Paul and Sean are delighted to welcome one of Strawberry's highly talented studio engineers to the podcast this week. Mark Cockburn, initially recruited by Consequences engineering legend Martin Lawrence, took part in numerous sessions between the late 70s and early 80s. Mark gives us near-total recall on his experiences as an assistant engineer at Stockport's state-of-the-art facility. We know you'll find the level of detail about sessions incredible and fascinating. His first foray into studio life was with Scott & Batiche (featuring Alistair Gordon - later of Banks Statement - and Richard Darbyshire of Living in a Box), but soon he was working directly with (Graham's half of) 10cc on what would morph into the Ten Out of Ten album. His stories about some of the tracks on that record are so illuminating and entertaining! There are numerous other sessions to savour here, including Sad Café, The Ramones and projects with the sonic luminary Martin Hannett. This is a studio buff's dream - and Sean's really enjoying himself! You'll also hear a wide selection of clips from extremely rare and never-heard 10cc outtakes, experiments, sessions and demos. We won't spoil your surprise by listing them here... Thanks as always to our fine friend David Jarvis for these. Look out for a surprise pod coming on December 17th...
Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to announced on-line and streaming local theatre & book events Bookwaves Roger Kahn, who died on February 6, 2020 at the age of 92, was one of the icons in the world of baseball writing. His classic “The Boys of Summer,” about his relationship with his father and their united love for the Brooklyn Dodgers, is one of the greatest baseball books of all time. He started his career in journalism in 1948 as a copyboy for the New York Herald Tribune and within four years was covering the Dodgers for that newspaper. He moved over to Newsweek in 1956 and the Saturday Evening Post in 1963 as he revved up his career writing both fiction and non-fiction books, mostly but not exclusively about baseball, and the ups and downs of his own life. On October 13, 1993, Richard A. Lupoff and Richard Wolinsky sat down for an extended interview with Roger Kahn about his book, “The Era: 1947-1957, when the Yankees, the Giants and the Dodgers Ruled the World. “ It turned out he was a marvelous raconteur, as well as a keen historian of racism in the sport. In fact, his final book, published in 2014, was titled “Rickey and Robinson: The True, Untold Story of the Integration of Baseball.” (Branch Rickey and Jackie Robinson). Dick Lupoff and Richard Wolinsky would interview Roger Kahn once more, in 1998, but that interview focused not on baseball but on a biography of boxer Jack Dempsey. After this interview, Roger Kahn would go on to write six more books, including not only the history of the early days of integration, and the biography of Dempsey, but a memoir of the people he met, a book about the view from the pitching mound, and a history of the New York Yankees improbable run for the pennant in 1978. This is one of our favourite ever episodes. Sean and Paul once again had the pleasure of Graham's company for a loving and hugely enjoyable tribute to his late friend and prolific songwriting partner Andrew Gold. Graham shows his massive admiration and love for this supremely talented multi-instrumentalist, who rose to prominence as musical maestro with Linda Rondstadt, among others. He gives a comprehensive account of his involvement with Andrew, from his introduction to the Ten Out of Ten album in 1981, when the Californian was brought in at the behest of the U.S. record company. The spark was lit, and Gouldman sought him out soon after he and Eric parted ways. We hear the complete story of how the duo Common Knowledge was formed, in Graham's home studio, and we hear lots and lots of never-heard-before songwriting demos. Once again, we thank Graham and David Jarvis for these wonderful recordings, spanning their collaborations from 1986 to 1997. With their second project, now named Wax, the pair had their breakthrough hit with with the storming Right Between the Eyes. There was an infectious energy about this new music, all but completely missing from 10cc's post-70s output. We shine a torch on the highlights of all four of Wax's album releases: Magnetic Heaven, American English, A Hundred Thousand in Fresh Notes and Bikini. Sean even gets out his guitar to quiz Graham on a song he hugely admires: Wax's biggest UK hit, Bridge to Your Heart. So this is a candid, warm, funny and poignant appreciation of Andrew Gold the person and musician. We hope you enjoy this as much as we did.

Sean and Paul finally get around to the 'difficult' 1980s 10cc albums... We're joined today via that Skype by two passionate observers of the 10cc universe: Panayiotis Bogdanos and Andrew Dalgarno. Both bring some well-needed positivity to our conversations about Look Hear, Ten Out of Ten and Windows in the Jungle, and a very different perspective on all of the tracks. Even Paul's joining the pod via satellite link, so Sean's manning podcast headquarters as solo anchorman for these next three episodes. We of course discuss Eric's 1979 accident and the interesting hiatus between Bloody Tourists and Look Hear, during which time Eric and Graham both recorded interesting solo soundtrack projects. The band's 1980 return sounds strangely flat, and we conjecture about the reasons for that. What is the relationship between the two main players? There are some reasons to be cheerful, however, although Sean is struggling with that! Whether you're a lover or hater of this album, we're sure you'll enjoy the sheer mad variety of our opinions on Look Hear. Confused? We certainly are! Fun though. Are you done?

Nashville’s Jeremy Lister started connecting with music while growing up in the middle of Mississippi. A son of a preacher, he began singing and learning harmonies in church at the age of two. Lister moved to Nashville in 2003, bringing his first EP, Shooting Star, with him. In 2005, he released his second EP, So Far, followed by the release of his Just One Day EP on Warner Bros. Records. That same year, he was invited to join the Ten Out of Tenn collective of singer/songwriters, which included then up-and-coming artists such as Andrew Belle, K.S. Rhoads, and Gabe Dixon. In 2010, he joined a cappella group Street Corner Symphony for the second season of NBC’s "The Sing-Off." The group became a fan favorite, eventually claiming the second-place title in the competition. Ben Folds invited them out on the road immediately following their success on the show, which launched their touring career. Street Corner Symphony performs dozens of headlining shows all over the world each year. Lister released his first solo full-length album, The Bed You Made, in 2011, which featured a duet with Alison Krauss on the song You and I. In 2013, he released the single Set Us Free, which became the theme song for the MTV series "The World Of Jenks." In 2017, he and his brothers, together under the name Lister Brothers, co-wrote and released the album Helium Ocean. In the 15+ years since he moved to Nashville, Lister has become a Music City staple, known for his prolific songwriting and unequaled vocal range. He has worked with some of Nashville’s biggest names, from Alison Krauss to Amy Grant, Megan Trainor, and Chely Wright. Lister recently launched a YouTube channel where he catalogs new music and collaborations with acoustic videos. His latest release, an EP entitled Sign Language, is due out in 2018.
Fours are the most complex of all the types on the Enneagram. They spend their lives feeling different and separate from others and long to be understood and appreciated for their authentic self. Fours experience themselves as people who are missing something essential at their core that they just can't put their finger on. As Tim Burton describes it, “if you've ever had that feeling of loneliness, of being an outsider, it never quite leaves you.” Fours also have a considerable emotional range. They don't have feelings, they are their feelings and those feelings form the basis of their identity. This unique gift of being so connected to their emotions allows them to experience a truly rich interior life. It heightens their creativity and acute sensibility to aesthetics, to beauty and meaning. In this episode, we invited singer-songwriter Matthew Perryman Jones to share his experiences growing up as an Enneagram Four. Not only does he describe that feeling of being unique but he also shares his song, “Oh Theo,” which truly captures the world view of a Four. Originally from Pennsylvania, Matthew grew up in Georgia and cut his artistic teeth in the Atlanta music scene before heading north to Nashville. His debut release, Nowhere Else But Here, dropped in 2000, followed by three subsequent albums — Throwing Punches in the Dark (2006), Swallow the Sea (2008), and Land of the Living (2012) — three additional EPs and a handful of singles. Songs from across his catalog have been featured in dozens of film and TV placements, and tours have taken him across the U.S. and abroad to share stages with legends like Shawn Colvin and Patty Griffin, as well as the Ten Out of Tenn songwriter collective of which he is a part. Now, Matthew is embarking on what might be the ultimate test of his inner compass: making his fifth album with only himself, a guitar, some basic recording gear, and genius loci — the spirit of place. As he chases the ever-retreating horizon, Jones will stop, listen, and capture when and what the spirit of each place calls out to him. To learn more about Matthew, visit www.mpjmusic.com.

This week, Matt and Shawn talk about St. Patty's Day celebrations! They also talk about the new app OrderUp, Emi Sunshine, and their upcoming SXSW trip! And this week's #NUArtist is Ten Out of Tenn (TOT)! Before Nashville was the “it city.” Before there was a hit TV show on ABC and before Hollywood stars like Nicole Kidman had moved into town. Before award-winning, elite ranking restaurants and boutique hot spots existed. And long before The Black Keys, Kings of Leon and even Meghan Trainor were calling Nashville home, there was already a movement brewing outside the walls of the country music scene. Their forward thinking may not have broken headlines, but this community of artists banded together and forever changed the game for emerging indie artists. Meet Ten Out of Tenn.
