So, this episode was meant to be out back on the 1st of June, but Nick and Andy from Cosmic Bos went AWOL so it was left up to me, Big Mic! to pull it all together so that you wonderful listeners and musician subs could hear it. Oh, it's Big Mic by the way, I've had to step in and start running the MMC Challenger, I have enlisted David Battenberg Cake and the Sexy German to go and press the buttons (not RUB the buttons as SG seems prone to doing) so that this episode made it off of the interdimensional Rocket Submarine Train and into your podcast feed. This is Episode 2.5 - Funk Drunk Love, co-curated with the one and only Uncle Funkbeard (go follow the majestic Funkle on X, and check out the Only The Host YouTube Channel to see all of the funky goings on) and it features 14 of the funkiest, drunkiest and loveiest songs on the whole of the interweb, created by a handful of the greatest indie musicians working today. The opening song is by Cosmic Bos themselves, they managed to finish up their song before they dissapeared from the MMC Challenger, the song is called 'Drunk on Your Love' and can be purchased from bandcamp here https://cosmicbos.bandcamp.com/track/drunk-on-your-love-feel-that-funky-heart-beating please consider giving them some money, that might actually get them back from wherever it is that they have gone AWOL to. They also made a nice little video to go with it, which you can watch and comment on here - https://youtu.be/wQnXo4jZdOI?si=HgQRFXqoj42G7hEj I, Big Mic, have done all that I can to try and keep the format the same as what the Bos boys would do, not sure why I bothered, I could have done whatever I like because I'm Big Mic! But for the sake of all you listeners and submitters I've tried to keep it as close to the same as possible. It wasn't easy, have you ever tried to control a Cake and a sexy German while running a human circus in an engine room with a load of Midgets in sexy costumes while having to put up with Professor Briiiiiiiiiiian Cox and a future version of yourself that controls the universe in the future? Didn't think so. Format the same as usual, so we had the Peoples Choice Award winners from the previous episode, 2.4 Animals, and there were 3 of them! So big shout out to Natalie Williams Calhoun (NWC), Tonal Drift (TD) and A Sea Warren (Al or Owl), you all won a People Choice Award for your excellent Animals based songs, really good they were. You can vote in the Peoples Choice Award for this episode right here on this link (Insert link here) As we aren't sure where Nick and Andy are, I, Big Mic, decided we would give you all a bit longer to complete the next challenge, so you have till the 30th August to get your 2.6 songs into the Bos boys. Send your mp3's and a little Bio and write up to cosmicbos@gmail.com to be included in the next episode. The theme is Plantlife, 2.6 - Plantlife. It's a bit like parklife by Bluh but more Plant based. So, yeah get on with it! Once again, big shout out to Uncle Funkbeard for all he did for this episode, utter legend! Here is the list of songs that go with this episode, in my, Big Mic's Big Number Order, so you can't cheat and skip through to a particular song, you have to listen to the whole thing! 1. Cosmic Bos - Drunk On Your Love (Feel That Funky Heart Beating) 2. Uncle Funkbeard - FOOL 3. A Sea Warren - Funk Drunk Love 4. Colin Pimlott - Funky Drunk Kind of Love 5. TruckDog & the Go People - Fulfill the Need 6. Andrew Hartshorn - Who Brings the Funk to Your Life 7. Taylor Lidstone - Barsnacks 8. John Serrano and James Slattery - Adrenaline Fire 9. Mario Marino - Plumage 10. Voltage Poetry Project - When the Wine Pours 11. Black Water Canyon - Whiskey Swamp 12. Chemical Shift - Awaken 13. Notehead - Funky Butt Loving 14. Hellwaddler - PFunky There you go, hopefully it's as good as the show normally is, we did our best without the Bos chaps, please go vote in the Peoples Choice Award, and if you are a musician that wants to submit to the MMC 2.6 - Plantlife challenge, you have till the 30th August 2024 to get your songs in. I am the one and only Big Mic from now, there is obviously Big Mic from the future who controls the universe, he's a lovely chap. Enjoy the episode and stay awesome sauce Big Mic

It's always a warm delicious treat to sit down with James Lee Stanley. There's a reason he's opened for everyone from Bonnie Raitt, Art Garfunkle, Bill Cosby (before we knew), Robin Williams, Dionne Warwick, Robin Trower, and Steven Wright for 3 years. His 50+ years of friendship and musical partnership with Peter Tork were covered from start till two days before Peter's passing when he was felled by rare cancer under his tongue. Shockingly, James survived his own bout of tongue cancer months later, when his beloved wife Evelina suggested an endoscopy, without cause. James was back performing mere months later. Last September, days after sitting down with us here, James fell off his roof, for the first time not under the watchful eye of his Evelina, broke his back, was airlifted for surgery, took no pain meds, and did a concert two weeks after surgery. This is a substance- sans substances. James treated us to a solo rendition of All I Ever Wanted, one of the many songs he and Peter recorded together. Just today he posted a video of them performing it: https://youtu.be/9VmeUvSYS1A. James also treated us to fab, funny, apropos, Wake The Flock Up, one of my favorite cuts from his All Wood And Doors, Moonlight Drive, and to the ink just dried, brand new, Carnival. Gorgeous vocals and stunning guitars are James' trademarks. We talked about his All Wood And Stones, Doors, and Led series, what inspired it, the players who've graced it, his upcoming album, his 36th, the documentary, The Opening Act – The Extraordinary Journey of James Lee Stanley directed by documentarian Gary J Katz (Badfinger, Humble Pie, Steve Marriott, Manassas), which has received a Peoples Choice Award, was in the London Lift-Off Film Festival and was accepted into the LA, Chicago, and Atlanta Film Festivals, awaiting judging. James Lee always leaves me wanting more. Jimmy Stafford is an American musician-songwriter who was an original member of the Grammy Award-winning band Train from its inception in 1994 until he parted ways with the band in 2016. His unique style of guitar playing helped give Train its distinctive sound.Jimmy recorded eight albums with Train, selling more than 10 million copies and 30 million tracks. With Train, he was nominated for eight Grammy Awards (winning three, including best rock song for "Drops of Jupiter" in 2002), three American Music Awards, two Billboard Music Awards (winning both top rock song for "Hey, Soul Sister" and top rock artist in 2011), an ASCAP Music Award (winning song of the year for "Hey, Soul Sister" in 2011), a CMT Music Award, a Nickelodeon Kids Choice Award, and a Peoples Choice Award. He has toured the world many times over, performing for large audiences in North America, China, the Philippines, Dubai, Europe, Singapore, South America, Japan, and Australia, appearing on countless television and radio shows worldwide. In 2011 Train founded the Save Me San Francisco Wine Company which Jimmy was heavily involved in, from helping to choose the blends of their many varietals (all named after their hit songs or lyrics), to hosting events and tastings, to appearing at promotional bottle signings and meeting with local distributors in cities where Train was on tour. After his final tour with Train in the fall of 2016, Jimmy returned home to Nashville and discovered a batch of unfinished songs he had written during his tenure with Train and became inspired to finish some of them. He continued to write and by April 2017 had accumulated dozens of songs, the best of which he decided to record and release independently. His debut solo album titled "No Man's Land" was released in November 2017. Jimmy wrote and produced the album as well as performed much of the music. Inspired by the process, Jimmy continued to write and record, and in April 2018 he released his second album "Shine Like The Sun." Jimmy wrote, produced, and performed everything on the album. Since then, Jimmy has continued to write, record, and release new music. Those who know Jimmy will tell you that he has always had a passion for music. As a young boy growing up in Morris, Illinois - a small town just an hour south of Chicago - Jimmy would build pretend guitars from scraps of wood and lip-sync to his favourite records until he was able to buy his first real guitar at the age of twelve from the money he earned working on local farms. His passion for music along with his growing ambition and determination to succeed took him to Hollywood fresh out of high school, where he graduated from the Musician's Institute and played in several bands throughout the '80s and early '90s including the Apostles, the band that would eventually dissolve and regroup in San Francisco along with Pat Monahan to become Train in the summer of 1994. ONCE UPON A GENE - EPISODE 038 Rare Like Us with Taylor Kane ANNOUNCEMENTS Don't forget to register for the NORD 2020 Living Rare, Living Stronger Patient and Family Forum streaming July 18th-19th. I'll be on the parent panel on the 19th talking about stress reduction and caregiver well being. Register here. Head over to podcastawards.com and nominate Once Upon a Gene for The People's Choice Award under the Society-Culture category. Disorder: The Rare Disease Film Festival was supposed to be held in May and was cancelled due to COVID. These films are important in connecting families and researchers across the world. Bo Bigelow and Daniel DeFabio, the founders of the film festival, launched The Disorder Channel. It's available for free on Roku and Amazon Fire. I discovered the passionate and driven Taylor Kane through the book she wrote called Rare Like Us, a memoir about her loving father dying from a rare disorder called Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). It's an incredible story and captures the insurmountable obstacles families in the rare disease community face. She is also the founder of Remember The Girls, an international nonprofit organization that unites, educates and empowers female carriers of x-linked genetic disorders. She's recently been nominated for an award in the category of patient leader hero. You can endorse her nomination here. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS When did you decide to write Rare Like Us? I always had in the back of my mind that I would write a book and tell my story. I finally started my freshman year of college, very slowly. I did a lot of research, went through a lot of documents and had a lot of conversations with my mom which helped me to capture the time that he was sick. I was only three years old when he was diagnosed and he passed away when I was 5 years old, so I didn't have a clear memory of everything that happened in that time. I remember my dad being sick and when he passed away, but I didn't know all the details and all the ways my mom suffered throughout that time. The book took about three and a half years to write from start to finish and it was published in August 2019. Can you tell us about your dad's diagnosis? My dad started having small behavioral changes. He was very neat, talkative, outgoing and never missed a beat. My mom started noticing things like his desk getting messy, they were arguing more, and he was getting more forgetful. They started going to marriage counseling and the counselor suggested that he get an MRI of his brain because of the random behavioral changes. He got an MRI and within a few days was diagnosed with Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). There's no treatment or cure and he only had a few years left. It was all very sudden and out of nowhere. Looking back, he did have some of the physical symptoms such as walking difficulties. What does it mean to be a carrier of ALD? ALD is an x-linked recessive disease which means it's carried on the x chromosome. Since my dad had it, I'm 100% a carrier of the disease because men give their only x chromosome to their daughters. I have a 50% chance of passing the disease down to any children I have in the future. Female children would be carriers and male children would get the disease. There's also a high chance that I'll eventually develop physical symptoms of ALD. Over 90% of carriers eventually develop symptoms. As of now, I don't think I have related symptoms, but that does increase as I get older. There was an assumption that since women have two x chromosomes, the healthy one would make up for the deficiencies of the one with the mutation. We know now that's not true and the same goes for all x-linked disease. Women have experienced symptoms as long as the disease has existed, but we're only just now getting into carrier related advocacy. In 2017, I formed my own nonprofit foundation called Remember The Girls, which is dedicated to carriers of x-linked disorders. It is one-of-a-kind and the only group that has ever brought x-lined carriers of different diseases together. We face a lot of the same issues with our symptoms being misunderstood and the difficulties that comes with having kids and alternative reproduction. We have about 30 or so x-linked diseases represented in our group, some more rare than others, and we have over 600 members from every continent in the world. A big part of your organization is creating community and having strength in numbers. What are some other goals you have for the organization? Breaking the carrier stigma is an overarching mission. So many of us have been told that because we're just carriers, we don't have anything to worry about and it's frustrating. Right now we're focused on developing a provider network and developing a family planning toolkit. The provider network will be a searchable database of carrier-friendly doctors, clinicians and mental health professionals recommended by the women in our group. The family planning toolkit will provide carriers with the options and resources available for having a family. What are you most proud of with Remember The Girls? The organization is the only one like it that exists. We have a strong board of directors, a medical advisory board with three doctors and three genetic counselors and I think the organization is strong despite being new. I'm most proud of the awareness the organization has raised. As the leader of the organization and as an advocate, my own biggest accomplishment is when i get a message from someone who felt alone until they found the group. I get those messages and the world stops for a minute when I realize I've created something that people need and find comfort in. What can people do to help your cause? Support Remember The Girls on social media. People can make donations to us to support our projects and help our organization grow. And spread the word about us to someone you know who is a carrier. The speed and pace at which many of us live and lead is exhausting. When we are constantly in a hurried state, how do we hear from God? On today's episode, Alan sits down with Carlos Whittaker for a great conversation about Carlos's new book Enter Wild and how to have a very vibrant life with God. About Carlos Carlos Whittaker is a People's Choice Award winner, a former recording artist signed to a major label, a social media maven, and currently spends the majority of his time writing books and speaking on stages around the world. It really began when the Whittaker's found their family in America's spotlight with appearances on shows like CBS Early Morning, The Today Show, and more when their viral video "Single Ladies Devastation" went viral. But for Carlos, his wife Heather, and their three children, this viral moment was just a snapshot of the bigger picture. Currently reigning at nearly 7 million views, it's hard to believe that the overnight success of Carlos' son's "Single Ladies Devastation" on YouTube was a complete accident. "I remember putting the video on YouTube that night and not thinking much about it," recalls Carlos. "The next morning my phone was blowing up with calls from all these national outlets asking me if I was the horrible father in the YouTube video." But That Was Just The Spark "Our family has experienced our share of moments both big and small. What we've learned is that every single one has played a pinnacle part in our lives. Each moment has built on to the next one and when we take a step back we see this incredible canvas that has been woven together." The release of "Moment Maker" marked Carlos' debut as an author, but his current book "Kill The Spider" has taken Carlos' tribe into the deeper parts of their souls. In his newest book Carlos helps people identify, locate, corner, and kill the spiders that are plaguing their lives. "My dad once told me that I must stop cleaning to cobwebs in my life and kill the spider", Carlos recalls. "This was a massive shift in my soul that began my journey towards being truly centered in my life." As an adult, Carlos and his wife Heather moved from California back to Atlanta where he joined the team at Andy Stanley's Buckhead Church. There, Carlos continued to apply 'moment making' into his everyday life, blogging about his experiences and recruiting his family and friends along the way. In 2009 Carlos signed a recording deal with Integrity Music and moved his family to Nashville TN. It was in Nashville where Carlos decided to make the shift from writing music to writing books. And from singing on stages to speaking on stages. Currently, Carlos is regularly teaching at churches and conferences worldwide. Including Catalyst Conference, Embrace Church, FreshLife Church, and many more. Connect with Carlos Books Website Podcast Twitter Instagram Facebook

Jayna Blackwell is a soulful music artist who aims to power through the hearts of the people with her upbeat melody and cheery tunes. Similar to her cheerful and optimistic personality, Jayna Blackwell aims to create magic through the genres of R&B and House. Jayna Blackwell was born in Ohio when she moved to Oakland to pursue her musical career. Oakland has, therefore, played a major role in her music career as she had one of the biggest nights of her life at Yoshi’s – the stage that has helped conquer millions by hosting musical legends. Her stage name, Mistress of Soul, Jayna Blackwell has managed to touch the souls of several other artists through her soulful musical craft. The performer has received several awards for her musical craft during her career. The latest she recalls is the one she won in 2017 for the People's Choice Award of UK Ground Breakin’ musical artists. In addition to this, she has also won the Thicknation Song of the Year Award in 2015, the Bay Area Music Award in 2014, and the Best Neo-Soul Performer Award in 2012. Considering the charm of her lyrics, it is not a surprise that people compare her to Stephanie Mills and Faith Evans. Jayna believes that she sounds similar to Tamia, and would be thankful if she can produce and promote music on the same edge. At present, the Mistress of Soul aims to tour different parts of the world so that she can continue sharing the spotlight with other musical legends.Support the show (https://www.gofundme.com/lets-jazz-it-up-ladydiva-live-radio&rcid=r01-155237937664-a0ba938ee6e24441&pc=ot_co_campmgmt_w)
In one day, the Emmy Awards were handed out and the Toronto Film Festival announced its most surprising Peoples Choice Award winner in years. We break down what it all means.
This week will be one of our most exciting episodes of BTE Radio as we welcome our most noted and recognizable guest yet! Shawn and Marianne Donley are back this week with another edition of the "Haunted Spotlight." Brought to us by Panic'D www.panicd.com and Dark Shadow Ghost Tours www.darkshadowghosttours.com. Then at 8:30 pm Eric and Marie are honored to welcome Comedian, Actress, N.Y. Times Best Selling Author and Producer, Brett Butler. It's truly an honor to welcome Brett to the show this week as she shares details about her gifts and talents in the Psychic realm and we talk all things Paranormal this week. About Brett: She's a comedian, an actress, a NY Times bestselling author and a producer… She is Brett Butler – You know her. You love her. HEY, just play along… From the Hills of Georgia to the Hills of Hollywood she's driven mighty far just to be here. Born in Montgomery and growing up outside Atlanta's metropolis -- Brett has lived it, she's seen it and you can bet she's heard it too. How else could she hit almost 30 years in the business? Being the eldest of five sisters (we counted twice just to make sure) should have given her plenty of insight into a standup routine. It took a bit more than just five sisters and being raised in the south though. The world got their first taste of the comedic southerner on The Tonight Show in 1987 – The same year a breakthrough came on television as a writer for Country Music Superstar Dolly Parton. Keeping a heavy beat on the New York stand up circuit Brett was unbeknownst on her way to prime time. In 1992 Marcy Carsey and Tom Werner caught Brett's act and approached her about a role in an upcoming sitcom they were working on. Grace Under Fire was born and Grace Kelly met the world in 1993 premiering on ABC. Brett starred as Grace Kelly, the funny yet witty divorced mother of 3 children with ties to her abusive ex-husband. The show became a prime time hit in its first season. During this time Brett won a Peoples Choice Award for Favorite Female Performer in a New TV Series as well as a Q Award for Best Actress in a Quality Comedy Series. Brett was also nominated for two Golden Globe Awards and three Q Awards (Viewers for Quality Television Awards).Grace Under Fire aired for 5 seasons. About Me After the 112th episode in 1998 the show came to an end and shortly after, Brett retreated home. Back in Georgia, she set up shop on a beautiful farm with fifteen animals and the stillness of serenity. Wanting to rediscover life outside of Hollywood, Brett was able to do just that on her north Georgia farm. Animals have long been a part of Brett's life -- now with the passion she's always put forth and being on a farm with plenty of room and time she was able to accommodate her desire to work with them. Dogs, cats, horses and livestock of all kinds -- there were plenty of animals to call her own. Brett's work with local humane societies and animal rescue orginizations consumed the majority of her time back on the farm. While rehabilitating animals, she also found the time to keep writing, touring her standup act and most of all acting. During this time she was cast in roles far and wide including: "Mrs. Harris" (Movie), "My Name is Earl" (TV Series), "Archer" (TV Series) and "The Young and the Restless" (TV Series). Most recently, Brett has traded in the rolling hills of the Georgia farm for the big city lights of Hollywood California. This time she's been keeping busy filming a recurring role on Charlie Sheen's hit FX sitcom "Anger Management" and her recurring role on the CBS Soap "The Young and the Restless." Keeping her stand up comedy up to par and with more projects in the works -- who knows where you could see the Southern Belle of Comedy next.
