On the new episode of The Morse Code Podcast I speak with singer-songwriter and ultramarathon runner Jeremy Lister about his unusual - and unusually successful - path in music, starting with his emergence in Nashville as a breakaway artist in the late 2000's through his recent gigs singing with Eric Church at Coachella to his latest synch on Grey's Anatomy a few weeks ago.You never know how these conversations will go - the second half is spent unpacking Jeremy's addiction, before and after he got sober (he just celebrated his ninth year alcohol-free) and how his decision to leave it behind led to an passion for running, marathon running, and finally, running ultras. We also play an unreleased song of Jeremy's, performed live in the studio - “Dirt”. This episode got into some sensitive territory, including what was going on behind the scenes during the last Street Corner Symphony tour - an a capella group Jeremy co-founded that won Season One of the Sing-Off on NBC, hosted by Ben Folds. I've known Jeremy for almost twenty years, including the stretch he describes here. I had no idea what was going on with him personally at the time. It's a testament to that quote by Socrates, invoking us to Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.Below is a direct link to “Dirt”. At the end of the video there's an invitation to listen to (or watch) a playlist featuring all of the songs recorded live on the Morse Code Podcast. We're up to about twenty.Hope you find these conversations as inspiring to your own creative journey as I've found them to mine. ~KorbyThe Morse Code is a reader-supported publication. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got an award-winning multi-hyphenate that you may have seen on TV, a Broadway stage, or packing out a big theater near you in conversation with a guy whose equally riveting work has mostly been behind the scenes: Sara Bareilles and Rob Moose. I'm not sure where to begin with Sara Bareilles' resume: She found fame with her music, with songs like “Brave” and “Love Song” topping the charts. But in addition to making huge records, she's been a judge on NBC's The Sing-Off, she wrote the music and lyrics for—then eventually starred in—the Broadway production of Waitress, and she co-created the Apple TV series Little Voice and acted in the Peacock series Girls5Eva. And honestly, this is all just the tip of the iceberg. You will be surprised by how remarkably down to earth she seems in this conversation—I was.  Rob Moose met Bareilles when he was asked to do some string arrangements for her at a Lincoln Center event organized by Ben Folds. For the past 20 years, that's the kind of work Moose has mostly done: His expert strings have added color and wonder to music by everyone from Sufjan Stevens and The Decemberists to Taylor Swift. He's been a member of Bon Iver and performed live with Jay-Z. Chances are very good that you've heard him without ever hearing his name, because it wasn't until this year that he decided to release music under his own name: It was while on tour with Paul Simon that Moose had the idea to collaborate with some amazing singers, setting their voices to his strings—and nothing more. The result is an EP called Inflorescence, which features Emily King, Brittany Howard, Phoebe Bridgers, Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, and—perhaps you guessed by now—Sara Bareilles. It's a fantastic, unexpected set of songs that brings out the best in both the strings and the voices. Check out a little bit of Moose and Bareilles on the song “Extract.” In this conversation, these two chat about how a Craigslist ad changed Moose's life, about how Bareilles was a bit gunshy about collaborating early in her career, and about how you've got to really want to live in New York City—which they both seem to want to do. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to Rob Moose and Sara Bareilles for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the good stuff at Talkhouse.com. Armed with overflowing positive energy and a live-for-the-moment mentality, Payson is bringing his brand of Indie-Pop spirit not for himself alone, but for the whole world to enjoy.A Philly kid born and raised, Payson taught himself to sing and play piano by poring over his big brothers' CDs and learning by ear. Eventually, he moved west to continue his evolution as a musician and songwriter at USC and find his place as an artist in LA.Payson's soaring vocals and natural knack for dynamic performance landed him instant success and led to a Top-4 finish on NBC's "The Sing-Off." Since then, he has used his diverse musical skill set in performances all over the world; lending his voice to symphony orchestras in Taiwan and Korea, starring in theatrical performances in Chicago and Las Vegas, and singing on multiple major motion picture soundtracks. Tim Foust is a sardonic, yet sensitive, singer-songwriter who doesn't take himself too seriously. As an established performer with all-vocal country band, Home Free, Tim is known mostly for a bass voice that reaches notes deep enough to shake arenas. Now, as he begins to release new recordings as a solo artist, the world will be introduced to a master craftsman who can build a wall of sound using the unequaled range of his voice alone. An accomplished songwriter, Tim has achieved recognition for his compositions on Home Free's Billboard Chart-topping albums, “Timeless,” “Dive Bar Saints” and So Long Dixie.” With an unmistakably authentic writing voice, Tim uses his clever wit to tell stories inspired by both fact and fiction. He enjoys being a wordsmith as much as a musician, and each piece is an opportunity for him to pen lyrics that stir emotion as well as entertain with originality and, at times, humor. Onstage, Tim is known equally for his voice and his personality. Like a big brother, he shows affection to his audience through jokes and teasing, and he's built a community of fans who travel from far and wide just to be in the same room with him. Tim is a true musician's musician, which is why he feels at-home in Nashville. Born and raised in the small town of Nederland, Texas, he went on to live in Los Angeles, Boston, Minneapolis, and At-Sea as a guest entertainer aboard cruise ships, before joining Home Free in 2010. In 2013, the group found international success after competing on, and winning, the NBC series “The Sing-Off”. Tim finally found a home in Tennessee in 2014, which is where he also met his wife and frequent musical cohort, Jenika Marion. Collaborating with friends is a huge part of what makes Tim happy and one of the ways he prefers to spend his time. He has been featured on releases by Peter Hollens, VoicePlay, Straight No Chaser, The Hound + The Fox and more. This year, he plans to use new platforms to share the stage and screen with his talented cohorts via stage and backyard shows, destination experiences, livestreamed events, exclusive recordings and more. He recently formed the supergroup, Sweet + Low Music Co., with some off his favorite vocalists, writers and multi-instrumentalists. Tim has two solo albums - “The Best That I Could Do,” a collection of country originals, and “Pieces of Me, Vol. 1,” and all-Tim, all a cappella Doo-Wop project.

I have been a fan of Pentatonix, and contemporary a cappella as a whole, for as long as I can remember.  I was a huge fan of The Sing-Off, and little did I know that years later, I would have an opportunity to talk with one of the arrangers and vocal directors on that show, Rob Dietz!  In this episode of the podcast I'm sharing with you my conversation with Rob, where we talk about how to build a contemporary a cappella group from the ground up.  We also discuss things like rehearsal strategies, how to find appropriate repertoire, vocal percussion, and so much more.  If you've always wanted to add a contemporary a cappella group to your existing choral program, or you already have one but you want to grow it and make it better, then you are going to LOVE this episode! To find out more about Rob and his work, head on over to:choirdirectorcorner.com/robdietzLooking for an online community of choir directors, just like you? Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers continued to light up the silver screen in 1937, and it was the Gershwin brothers -- Ira and George -- who were responsible for the nominated song that accompanied their song-and-dance routine. Not to be outdone, Bing Crosby makes a play for a hit song with a lullaby, written by an old friend who had no plans to work in Hollywood.

Michael Elsner is a guitarist/songwriter/producer with over 2500 TV and Film placements to his name. His songs have been placed in over 180 individual television series, accounting for over 850 individual episodes. Some of these include American Idol, The Voice, Good Morning America, Impractical Jokers, EXTRA, The Sing-Off, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Tracks he's written have been used in international commercials for Audi, Mazda, Skechers and Verizon, as well as trailers for Star Wars: The Mandalorian, Maleficent 2, Disney's Cinderella, Ocean's 8, Susperia, Narcos, Sneaky Pete, as well as a Super Bowl Ad for Amazon Prime's Jack Ryan series. What You'll Learn In this episode, Michael shared his secret on how independent musicians worldwide can connect with the taste-makers in the sync licensing industry, and generate sync placements on a consistent basis with a hefty sync fee. He also wrapped up his idea of success with personal freedom, creative freedom, and financial freedom. He also had this philosophy of “starting at the top” which was definitely one of the reasons why he had many opportunities in a very short amount of time. Things We Discussed “The 4 Step Plan to Licensing Success” - free ebook Metadata - basically the descriptive words that have to be added to the audio file so that someone can search through catalogs of hundreds of thousands of songs for the ideal fit. Now, ideally, you want your metadata to be thorough so that you end up in the final ten or twelve songs in that search, and then of course, your song is going to be auditioned. If it's a good fit, then it goes to the next step where it actually has to get licensed. Resulting in him creating a world where beatboxing meets classical music. ·      How he joined Pentatonix a day before the group auditioned for Sing Off.·      Winning the competition but then getting dropped by their label soon afterwards. ·      How they didn't let being dropped stop them and started to put out their own content on YouTube. Soon, they recognized they could use Christmas as a time to put out an album. ·      The struggles they went through as a group and how it wasn't always positive. ·      Getting married and what fatherhood is like while on the road. ·      How he makes goals for the month to properly prioritize his time. ·      Favorite moments from his career and how he still gets nervous.  We cover so much on this episode and didn't even hit all that I wanted to talk about. He's written and produced commercials for Audi, Mazda and Skechers.   Licensing his music catalog to TV shows, Films, Commercials, Video Games, and Film/Game Trailers has been a central part of his career for the last 14 years. With over 2000 placements to his name, Michael has shared the process that he's used to generate those placements.   Rich, Jim and Michael also discuss:   - Movie trailer music   - Being of service and not being a narcissist   - Tension beds   - Making a producer's job easier   - Star Wars end scene without music   - Licensing music is easier than one may think   Follow Michael: www.michaelelsner.com @mikeelsner   The Rich Redmond Show is about all things music, motivation and success.
