Legendary comedian and radio host Rickey Smiley joins Adam in studio to talk about his new comedy special FOOLISH, dropping May 30th on Hulu. Rickey opens up about grief, faith, and the heartbreaking loss of his son Brandon in 2023. He shares how leaning on his spirituality has helped him—and others—through tragedy, and why therapy, faith, and hands-on work like being a pilot or a mechanic can keep comedians grounded. Adam opens up about his own envy of Rickey's faith, and the two connect over the importance of staying sane in a chaotic world. Rickey also shares stories from his Alabama upbringing, being raised by his grandparents, and why his mom working at Arby's left him with strong opinions about fast food.Jason “Mayhem” Miller jumps in for the news of the day, including a $30,000 cocktail, Joe Rogan's turn toward Christianity, the DNC's multi-million dollar plan to figure out how to talk to men, Russia's continued Olympic ban, and Adam's take on a controversially named pill.To close out the show, Kirk Cameron zooms in to talk about becoming a grandfather, the pitfalls of relying on Alexa to parent your kids, and his hope for a country led by competent adults. He also plugs his new kids' show Iggy & Mr. Kirk, now streaming on Brave+. Trey's Table Episode 271 **Courageous Journalism and the Legacy of Jackie Robinson: A Discussion on *Trey's Table* Episode 271** Hey everyone, I'm Trey Smith, host and producer of *Trey's Table*, a podcast dedicated to exploring African-American history, politics, and culture. In our latest episode, **Episode 271**, we dive into a powerful story of courage, activism, and the enduring legacy of Jackie Robinson. This episode was inspired by the recent stand taken by **Mina Kimes**, an ESPN journalist who courageously criticized the Trump administration's removal of information about Jackie Robinson from a Department of Defense website. Kimes' actions remind us of the importance of speaking truth to power and preserving the stories of those who paved the way for justice and equality. In this episode, we explore: - **Mina Kimes' Bold Journalism**: How her criticism of the administration's actions serves as a modern example of courageous journalism. - **Jackie Robinson's Legacy**: Not just as a baseball legend, but as a civil rights icon whose impact extends far beyond the field. - **Branch Rickey's Courage**: The story of how Rickey, the Brooklyn Dodgers executive who signed Jackie Robinson, took a stand against racism in sports. - **The Power of Collaboration**: How Branch Rickey's niece, **Elizabeth Rickey**, and African-American journalist **Norman Robinson** worked together to stop the racist David Duke from becoming governor of Louisiana in the 1990s. These stories remind us that courage comes in many forms—whether it's a journalist speaking out, an executive breaking barriers, or everyday people joining forces to fight injustice. **Why This Matters** The removal of Jackie Robinson's story from a government website isn't just about erasing history—it's about erasing the lessons of courage, resilience, and unity that his life represents. By discussing these issues, we hope to inspire our listeners to reflect on the importance of preserving history and standing up for what's right. **Tune In to Episode 271** If you're passionate about history, social justice, or the power of storytelling, this episode is for you. Listen now to hear the full discussion and join the conversation about how we can continue to honor the legacy of Jackie Robinson and others who fought for equality. **Let's Keep the Conversation Going** What does courage mean to you? How can we ensure that stories like Jackie Robinson's are never forgotten? Share your thoughts in the comments or on social media using the hashtag **#TreysTablePodcast**. Thank you for supporting *Trey's Table* and for being part of a community that values history, justice, and culture. Don't forget to subscribe, rate, and review the podcast to help us reach even more listeners. Stay tuned for more thought-provoking episodes, and as always, pull up a seat at *Trey's Table*. — Trey Smith Host and Producer, *Trey's Table*

Send us a textMountains aren't just for conquering—they're for conversations and connections. In this deeply personal episode, trail running legend Rickey Gates opens up about his journey from competitive racer to what he calls a "conceptual runner," someone who approaches running as a form of artistic expression rather than pure athletic pursuit.Rickey takes us back to his early days in Aspen, Colorado, where high school cross country ignited his passion for trail running. We follow his path from winning local races to representing the US Mountain Running Team to becoming a cornerstone athlete on the Salomon team during the explosive growth years of trail running. His collaborations with filmmaker Dean Leslie produced some of the most influential running films of the last decade, inspiring countless newcomers to the sport. The conversation takes a fascinating turn as Rickey shares rare insights about racing against Kilian Jornet at Mount Marathon—his all-time favorite race—describing what it's truly like to compete against someone widely considered the greatest mountain runner ever. "There's a drive in him that can't really be learned or faked," Rickey explains, offering a glimpse into Jornet's extraordinary competitive spirit while also emphasizing his genuine kindness.Perhaps most compelling is Rickey's candid discussion about stepping away from competition after 15 years to pursue more creative running projects. From running across America to his "Every Single Street" projects and his current work on "50 Classic Trails of America," Rickey has redefined success on his own terms. Now at 43, balancing fatherhood with guiding running trips and creative work, he reflects on finding fulfillment through exploration rather than race results.Whether you're chasing podiums or simply seeking connection through movement, Rickey's thoughtful perspective reminds us that sometimes the most meaningful paths emerge when we question conventional definitions of success and follow our authentic curiosities instead.Follow Rickey on IG - @rickeygatesCheck out Rickey's Website - @rickeygatesCheck out Rickey's 50 Classic Trails Project - @50ClassicTrailsSign up for Rickey's Santa Fe Fastpack ! The Author Events Series presents Carrie Rickey | A Complicated Passion, The Life and Work of Agnès Varda REGISTER In conversation with Gary Kramer Born in Los Angeles, Carrie Rickey is an award-winning film critic, art critic, and film historian. She was the film critic at the Philadelphia Inquirer for twenty-five years and has also written for Artforum, Art in America, Film Comment, the New York Times, the Village Voice, and Politico. She has taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Pennsylvania. She lives in Philadelphia. A Complicated Passion, The Life and Work of Agnès Varda is the first major biography of the storied French filmmaker, who was hailed by Martin Scorsese as ''one of the Gods of cinema.'' Over the course of her sixty-five-year career, the longest of any female filmmaker, Agnès Varda (1928 – 2019) wrote and directed some of the most acclaimed films of her era, from her tour de force Cléo from 5 to 7 (1962), a classic of modernist cinema, to the beloved documentary The Gleaners and I (2000) four decades later. She helped to define the French New Wave, inspired an entire generation of filmmakers, and was recognized with major awards at the Cannes, Berlin, and Venice Film Festivals, as well as an honorary Oscar at the Academy Awards. In this lively biography, former Philadelphia Inquirer film critic Carrie Rickey explores the ''complicated passions'' that informed Varda's charmed life and indelible work. Rickey traces Varda's three remarkable careers - as still photographer, as filmmaker, and as installation artist. She explains how Varda was a pioneer in blurring the lines between documentary and fiction, using the latest digital technology and carving a path for women in the movie industry. She demonstrates how Varda was years ahead of her time in addressing sexism, abortion, labor exploitation, immigrant rights, and race relations with candor and incisiveness. She makes clear Varda's impact on contemporary figures like Ava DuVernay, Greta Gerwig, Barry Jenkins, the Safdie brothers, and Martin Scorsese, who called her one of the Gods of cinema. And she delves into Varda's incredibly rich social life with figures such as Harrison Ford, Jean-Luc Godard, Jim Morrison, Susan Sontag, and Andy Warhol, and her nearly forty-year marriage to the celebrated director Jacques Demy. A Complicated Passion is the vibrant biography that Varda, regarded by many as the greatest female filmmaker of all time, has long deserved.
