"I wish I were like a rock sturdy and strong, enduring polished smooth by the forces that beat against me a safe resting place for storm tossed souls. Sometimes, I am." -Rev. Polly Guild, "Meditations from Star Island" It's not easy to make yourself vulnerable. But inspired by Alex and Sharon, this is where my journey took me, following the path of three souls in Rama. Decent people that I found reflections of in myself. I hope sharing my story means something to you as well. "Nearly all the best Hero's Journey's are journey's within, absolutely right. It's a self examination even if it's not conscious." - Alex Shaw So. We talked a lot about the story, deconstructing events and elements and thoughts galore. And it's up to every audience member on their own to decide what holds weight and what doesn't. What every piece means to them. But now we're going to take one last look at what it means to us. By us, I include myself, Toby, and finally Maureen Foley herself, the voice of Hrao. Taking one last look, covering old ground and new. The journeys of three individuals tracing back along the path as we figure out why in the world we talked this much about one single story. Maureen will eventually get to talk more about her experience. But for now, I give you the thoughts she recorded years back after the release of the Tiger's Eye audiodrama, along with a few topics of our own. "Stories mean a lot to everyone. As Sharon and Alex and thier guests got into in the Hero's Journey podcast, they are how we make sense of the world. Is Tiger's Eye more powerful to some because it follows that monomyth path closer than others? Does it feel more primal, closer to the ancient mythologies that came before? Is that why I end up responding to it like I did? I don't know." Part 5 to a very long episode. We finally tie it all together. We visit the symbolism of Hakka at his lowest place. We see the final stage of the journey and journeys of all three of our protagonists, how they contribute and reflect on each other. We take a closer look at the Hero's Journey and how it contributes to the context and framing. We talk about the importance of tools in storytelling, that you need more than one for a properly nuanced story, but that the oldest tools still have power when used right. All of it leading into how these storytelling tools will also become prominent when we use them on ourselves in the final episode of Tiger's Eye. "...this is not the first time that we will see someone react harshly to what they percieve as a calamitous threat. Someone far more sympathetic, someone that has lots of evidence to hand as to how things could turn out if not addressed. In the case of Hakka, the situation is framed very differently, and his story comes back to us now at the end to give us context to make us sympathetic to his journey. For those of you that haven't read the other books of New Century, you'll have to imagine what it's like on the other foot. When we have a clear protagonist having these kinds of conflicts with other protagonists. Indeed, you already got a little taste of it back in Secret Rooms. Where Annie encouraged Abigail towards empathy in regards to other humans, and Frank had to talk James down when the doctor claimed that they might not be treating the *wendigo* with empathy. So keep all of that in the back of your mind when we move on to Arlington and other future books." Part 4 of our analysis of the final chapters of Tiger's Eye, and what it has to say about Hakka's journey. We stop talking about Yesterday and start discussing Today. Seeing Durga tribe from Haka's perspective, discuss what Hakka might be like as a teacher and his understanding of his student. We dig deep on how Hakka feels about everything, how his anger and desperation grows as the events unfold, and his interaction with The Silent One as one firetalker encounters another, and they test each other. We come close to the end, of Hakka's journey as well as Hrao's and Miguel's, to be resolved... next time. "... okay, well, [Hakka and Hrao] are very much not aligned with one another. And yet, there is a familiarity there. And that just kind of gets the gears turning. But then, once the fight in the ruins happens, everything about the way Hakka speaks towards Hrao just feels exactly like an ex who still does care about you, but] is just so fundamentally not 'getting it'. The conversation on the surface is him trying to convey his goodwill towards her... it is very much a reminder of 'this is why we broke up'. It's kind of the energy of that fight scene." Hope you love Hakka talk. Cause we gonna talk-a about Hakka. This episode focuses of the revelation of Hrao and Hakka as mates. Both during their time together, and what it is for them now that they are apart with all of the baggage in play. How Hakka's insecurity and view of how the world should work spells doom for that relationship, and in the process, coming back to a serious discussion of how we relate to these stories and the people involved in their creation. "...if we don't tell Hakka's story, then it fundamentally changes the story itself. Treating him only an an antagonist would be anathema to the nature of what Tiger's Eye is trying to do. And it needs to be here not just for those larger themes, but because his journey helps bring resolution to both Miguel's journey and Hrao's journey. And their journey's resolution to his." Here, we start getting into the meat of our final chapters. What it means to go all the way back to the beginning with Hakka, what it means to suddenly flip the script and talk about Tiger's Eye's secret protagonist. And we also start making our way through these defining moments of the young red tiger that would one day become a shaman. About learning the wrong lessons, or just finding your mentor lacking. "So much of New Century's fiction is the confrontation of big, frightening concepts. Things that will drive people into existencial depression. But the author - and by extention, Hrao - looks at that and finds something that you can hold onto. Leon may well be a country with a lack of compassion. But there are still people within it that are willing to nurture hope." And here is the beginning of the end. Part 1 of our look at chapters 21-25, though this one really only focuses on the first of these chapters. We make further commentary on what is going on inside Captain Queensbury's head as well as speculation on her future. We also dive deep into the dashing Quincy Matthews and the final communion between Hrao and Doctor Shera. Tying off the major events of the last several chapters... and gearing up for a Tomorrow... born of all of Hakka's Yesterdays. "[Mohawk] has defined himself by his cruelty. And once his cruelty has been forcibly stopped and [the totems] he has stolen have been stripped away from him and given back to who it belongs to... what is Mohawk? In the end, we never know him by his true name. So, by the end of this, it's decided: 'We will not communicate with you. We are not going to suffer your presence any more, and we are denying you the spiritual close and the idea that you may come back in whatever form is next. Just go'. it is a complete disintegration of what Mohawk is and what he has done. In the end... Mohawk is nobody." Part 3 of our look at... what was it? Chapters 16-20? Yes, those. Man, that was a lot of talking. looks ahead to the amount of talking on the final chapters ...well.... shit. There's nothing for it, I suppose. But in the meantime, enjoy our conversations on the fate of Mohawk, Captain Beatrix, Doctor Shera and our aboriginal cats. ...Mohawk took [Hrao's] agency... and this is the first concrete step to fucking taking it back. She will not let his actions define her. Part of our discussion of Chapters 16-20, as we finally move away from the events of Chapter 16, and back to Miguel's narration. We discuss the difference in the capacity of for understanding the passage of time, because Miguel is used to thinking in discrete time units even if he cannot record them. And then we discuss the other weighty topic of these chapters: Miguel killing a lion in cold blood, and all the stuff that entails. How he reaches his lowest point, but has to come out the other side without time to properly come to terms with what he has done. We also finally start to discuss one of the most heartwarming moments of the book, how it resonates even more in respect to the events a few chapters ago, and the unification of One Tribe accepting Miguel as one of them. For those that make it to the outtakes: a picture of Toby and his hamster, Apple. The parts of Tiger's Eye that the story focuses on and we tend to remember and value are the feelings of freedom and the vibrancy of this other world, and the uplifting connections between people who were previously disconnected and have every reason to be at odds with one another. This moment [Hrao's rape] is the antithesis of that, framing it as the darkest point of opposition against all that is valued and celebrated within this narrative. Part 1 of our discussion on Tiger's Eye, chapters 16-20 (or 16-21 in the audiodrama). And this one is a doozy, discussing one of the hardest hitting moments in the New Century ouvre. This episode focuses mostly on the events in chapter 16 itself. We talk about some of the elements of the chapter that hearkened back to other pieces of media like the 1977 miniseries "Roots" (remade more recently in 2016). And we also discuss how the central theme of communication is finally brought to focus now, during this dark hour. About how Hrao rises above despair and uses the knowlege that she has gained in order to rally the aboriginal cats, to the goal of One Tribe. But this conversation is bracketed by a discussion of rape in media, as this is one of the distinguishing events of this chapter. Trigger Warning: For those to whom any discussion of rape might be triggering in any way, the timestamps to avoid such conversation is 24:24 to 1:05:55. (This means a bulk of the episode is verboten, but everyone needs to make their own call.) We hope we have done our best to address such a serious subject, and that you are also able to come with us on this journey. But if not, less fraught fare will be available next week. "...at the end of the day, the effect of his decision is not as important as what it means to Miguel. And what it means for Hrao, that he came back for her. He may or may not have saved her life. But the significance is that he tried." Our final episode covering chapters 11-15 of Tiger's Eye! This one is choc full of discussion on a number of different topics: • A further analysis of all our three new lion characters, and positing comparisons between ego, superego, and id. • Miguel's decisions and imagination, and how his culture plays into understanding the world of Rama. • A digression into Miguel correctly gendering Hrao, and the role of gendered language. • Further analysis of Miguel and Hrao's developing relationship, muddied by imperfect communication. All this and more, and we're only half way done with the book. The second half? Will only get denser. And that's what negative space is when it comes to narration. It's your understanding that what you're being told isn't an omnicient third person narrator whose job is to insure you are given every detail. It's a character *telling* you this. And that character will have their own biases and thing that will inform what they choose to tell and not tell you. That is just as much a part of the characterization as the events of the plot that you see in it. Digging deeper into our topic list for chapters 11-15, we get back into discussing Miguel's story. I end up learning some more about my cohost above and beyond our recorded conversations, and how they influence both his reading of the media he likes and the difficulties he has expressing his thoughts sometimes. We also talk about the metaphor of the lions of Albion and what it means for them to be the overarching threat to our aboriginal cats instead of humanity as was implied in previous chapters. "The power of [The fight between Hrao and Hakka] is unprecedented in New Century, both in terms of the raw clashing of immense forces from these beast warriors, and emotionall in terms of the personal investment that you can understand and feel coming from the two characters involved... it's frantic but clearly conveyed by the narrative taking you through each movement. And by the end of it, you feel exhauted right along Hrao." Here is part 1 of nearly 4 hours of discussion on Chapters 11-15 of Tiger's Eye. Dig in, folks. Heavy topics incoming, including death of a child and an abusive, gaslighting father. We start with a comprehensive discussion of several of the elements of Chapter 11. From confrontation, to fight scene dynamics, to musical contributions to this part of the audiodrama and New Century in general. But eventually, we have to have the larger discussion on the revelations of Hrao's past tragedy, and how it reflects and explains everything that has happened thus far. Toby also shows some insights into how Alex uses music and leitmotifs in Tiger's Eye, abe to identify certain instruments or musical bits as belonging to Miguel or the Gagaku. And then we get into Miguel. Our young hero and the journey that he has been on both before and after going Through The Wind Door(tm). "..as we have been saying, Tiger's Eye has its own unique feel in that Hrao does the lions share - or tiger's share - of making that world come alive for us. And we will never get that again, due to the fact that Maureen has had throat issues that would prevent her from working on future installments of Rama that center Hrao. That makes Tiger's Eye a gem that stands out, and further affects how much this one story means to us." Part two of our discussing of chapters 6-10. We now get into the meat of the events. Discussing text and subtext, communication, cultural differences, and how the audiodrama adds layers of subtlety to the written words of the story. Magic, and the spirits, the ongoing discussion on how killing is handled... and the growing, complicated relationship between tiger and boy. This is just us ramping up. "It's a truism that everyone responds to media differently. Maybe I would get more out of certain works if I was able to focus better. But speaking for myself... I have never had a problem focusing on New Century. That's why I said yes when asked about doing a podcast. Text or audio, it draws me in. I do appreciate how much the audiodrama offers over the text, and as Toby and I have kept saying, Tiger's Eye is one of the best examples of that. The work of Maureen, and Alex, and all the rest make this world come alive and demands our attention." It is Today. We are digging into Chapters 6-10 of Tiger's Eye, and are immediately back on our bullshit, making cat puns. Yay? We start off with some meta. Instead of talking about the events of these chapters, we instead discuss larger concepts: talking about how names of creatures in Rama were chosen by the author, and how our understanding of events and communication are different depending on whether you read or listen to the story. We start talking about what role humans might have actually played in the history of the cats of Rama, and what role they might yet play, given that Miguel has clearly come from a world of humans... humans they may encounter in Hrao's quest to return Miguel to his home. And to round us out, a further discussion on mythology, magic... and more cat puns. "...at this point both long term fans and recent readers of Secret Rooms might be remembering that strange tale from the old coot Malloy about a White Tiger, and realizing that that tall tale might have been real after all..." The second half of our coverage of Tiger's Eye, chapters 1-5. Here we talk about mythologies, the components of them, and what they have to do with boxes. We discuss the character of Hakka, what his potential motivations are, and how they conflict and contrast with Hrao's own. We delve a little into The Silent One as a shaman, and her different voices. "The inner voice is something that has such an effect on people when they go through this book, and it's because of moments like that where it feels as if you are experiencing a character's thoughts and their vulnerabilities in a way that you don't often experience in media, of any kind." It's time to visit a new world. A brave new world, with such people in it. This episode, we are going to start with chapters 1-5 of Tiger's Eye. Unlike before, we are moving far beyond our known world, so we will begin by discussing a lot of the elements that make up this new world. In this episode Suzanne discusses the touchy topic of fear. She shares some of her personal experiences with fear and how she has not allowed them to stand in the way of her success. She begins by pointing out that avoiding fear can often times make it worse. We are better off leaning into our fears as opposed to running away from them. She discusses her current motivating factor for addressing her fears...the fear of passing fearful feelings along to her kids.By seeing fear through a growth mindset lens, kids and adults alike can learn from their experiences with fear. The Big Life Journal is a great option for opening up discussions with kids on overcoming fear through a growth mindset. In this episode, some suggestions on how to harness fear are...-Consider a mantra such as "train your brain to be stronger than your emotions"-Talk to yourself, view yourself as the observer and talk your way through your fear.-Use mindfulness & the breath to calm the nervous system.-Educate yourself on the nuances of brain chemistry.-Use essential oils-Use a Tiger's Eye gem stone: hold it in the left hand, release fear out of the right hand.-Write down your fears & burn them(obviously, take caution with this suggestion). Our mini Myu marathon concludes with "Sailor Moon SuperS - Yume Senshi - Ai - Eien Ni..." which was delightfully entertaining after the previous two installments! We're not sure if it's just because the couple were so terrible or "Amour Eternal" was out least favorite of the post 20th Anniversary Myus, but we legitmately enjoyed this show. More than enjoyed, straight up liked - even loved, in Emma's case. The wigs are still tragic, the Senshi's civilian clothes are ridiculous, and Pegasus is a potentially seisure-indicuing light show, but other than that, this show is great! We're as shocked as you are.
I have plenty of excuses for not having a proper podcast episode done for this week, but let's go with this one: New Century is a great audio drama series and I haven't given it a signal boost in a while. And since I became a big enough fan to actually wind up playing a character or two in it, it seems like this was overdue. So prepare yourself for a cascading torrent of plugs. (I'll spare you the fanboy gushing for now) If you're unsure where to start, there's now an introductory episode giving overviews of the first phase of stories in the series. The current and (so far) funniest story in New Century, The Princess Thieves, is still in-progress and available to listen to for free on the New Century podcast feed, which can be found by clicking that link or searching for New Century on iTunes. If you've never listened before, it's a pretty good place to start. The Cartographer's Handbook, Secret Rooms, Tiger's Eye, and Arlington have all been completed and can be found as audiobooks on Band Camp. The first three are also out as eBooks on Amazon (for all you weirdos who like to look at words with your eyes), with Arlington due to be released soon. And be sure to follow the show's creator on Twitter @NewCenturyShaw. There's also a Facebook fan page if you're into that kind of thing. Oh, and if you'd like to discuss the series with other fans, check out the forum at SchoolOfMovies.com. Oh my dear sweet God, that was so many plugs just now. I'm all plugged out. More original content next episode, I swear.
The hunter closes in for the final kill, in the concluding episode of Tiger's Eye. Next week, Weirwood; the untold story of Grey & Penrose begins. We're going to take a walk down memory lane. This brief anecdote from college is just a sample of what you can expect next time. There is a lot more awkwardness where this came from, trust me. Also, we cap off the month with another promotional trailer for the excellent audio drama podcast New Century, because apparently I still haven't drilled it into your heads yet that you need to be listening to it. What's your deal anyway? You hate clever and engaging fiction or something? You can find New Century on iTunes. Here are some helpful links for you as well: Digital Drift Offical Site: http://www.digitaldrift.co.uk New Century episode list: http://www.digitaldrift.co.uk/downloads/new-century/ (If you're new, start from the first episode of Secret Rooms, then go back to the Cartographer's Handbook to learn more about the world, or jump into a whole new story with Tiger's Eye)
Stephanie returns to the show and we start off discussing dogs and their owners. Spirituality and meditation. Accupuncture works. Stephanie carries a Tiger's Eye rock around in her pocket. Sam explains the Kaballah. What God do you believe in? Charlie Sheen's show in Detroit bombs. Stephanie tells of her appearance on Two and a Half Men. The funny thing about soap operas. Tyra Banks is full of herself. How to go into an audition and feel confident. (Hint: imagine the producers sitting on the toilet.)
