Welcome to the July edition of Learning Unboxed. As many of you know, we tend to take the month of July off, but we have heard from our loyal listeners that you would love content during your summer vacation. So we have crafted a set of four episodes to run during the July holiday that are all about exploring student agency. For those working to make a meaningful shift in your classrooms, schools, and communities, the most crucial place to start is making the decision to shift from a teacher-led ecosystem to one that is student-led. In 2005 Gever Tulley accidentally stumbled into starting his own engineering-based summer camp in his backyard called Tinkering School. In this episode we'll hear about the philosophy behind this remarkable program and what can happen when you give kids real tools to solve real problems. Hands-on designing, fabricating and constructing empowers kids and helps them test their theories about the world around them. Giving tinkerers tools, autonomy and space has resulted in some unbelievable projects, like a gondola re-imagined as a dragon flying across their warehouse workspace! Gever Tulley is passionate about re-establishing the freedoms of childhood, self-directed learning, hands-on experiences and the value of play. Should children, to grow up healthy, do dangerous things? According to Gever Tulley, founder of Brightworks School and Tinkering School, two educational initiatives based on learning through experimentation, controlled risk can be a powerful educational tool. This educator firmly believes that education needs to free itself from parental over-protection. “We need brave boys and girls, who are prepared to confront the challenges of the world to come.” The message for fearful parents is clear: “Don’t let your fear be the only thing that interferes with your child’s autonomy.”

Our guest this week is Gever Tulley. Gever is founder of Tinkering School, an internationally famous summer camp where kids build amazing things from rollercoasters to wind-powered trains. He is also the founder of SF Brightworks, a K-12 school where the student is the co-author of their education, with an emphasis on learning by doing. Topic - Dangerism. We're getting to be a bunch of scaredy-cat parents.  Parents have been arrested because their children played in the yard after dark and for letting them to walk to school alone.  Parents now have a name, free-range parenting, for what we used to call “going out to play”.  Good grief.  Now, there's dangerism, a term coined by Gever Tulley, who created the Tinkering School, to point out the trend toward labeling common childhood behaviors as dangerous.  He says that we're worrying about all the wrong things which make us fearful most of the time.  Clearly, it's unhealthy.  And, because of this, we're instilling fear in our kids and limiting their chances to explore and learn.  We're not allowing them to develop coping skills, competence and to learn self-reliance and resilience.  Common sense seems to be a thing of the past and we need to return to using sound judgment based on science, statistics and concrete evidence. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/drclaudia/message
