Hailing from Half Moon Bay, California, August Howell grew up surfing up and down the state's northern coast. He studied journalism at the University of Oregon and was a reporter for his hometown newspaper, the Half Moon Bay Review, for nearly five years. But he was raised on a diet of surf magazines, and surfing (and writing about it) remains his passion. He has written about teenagers at Maverick's, shark researchers in the Farallon Islands, the nuances of big-wave guns, and is a staff writer for SURFER Magazine. In this podcast, we talk about the importance of physical magazines to consume information and preserve surf culture. If you dig this podcast, will you please leave a short review on Apple Podcasts? It takes less than 60 seconds and makes a difference when I drop to my knees and beg hard-to-get guests on the show. I read them all. Derek does the California Mille – California's take on the 1000-mile Italian road rally, the Mille Miglia. Behind the wheel of a 1956 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Veloce, Derek (and OTS & Co. cofounder, Tazio Ottis), experienced some of central California's best driving roads between Half Moon Bay and Calistoga alongside over 80 of the finest automobiles to exist by the mid-20th century. === This episode is sponsored by Vyper Industrial — America's #1 rated shop chair, tool carts, and creepers, proudly made here in the US. Visit vyperindustrial.com and use code CARMUDGEON for $50 off. === Initially dreamt up by local driving legend and passionate car enthusiast, Martin Swig, the California Mille hopes to recreate some of the legendary driving experiences of Italy's Mille Miglia. After Martin's passing, his wife and two sons (specialists at Broad Arrow and Bring-a-Trailer ) carried on the tradition until the event was purchased by Hagerty in late 2020. It's a swanky affair with spas, fancy lunches, drive-thru oyster bars, and open regular bars, with specialist mechanics and flatbed tow trucks at your beck and call. Naturally with 70-year-old (or older) cars, many breakdowns ensued. A Mercedes 300SL needed a tow, and a Ferrari 250 TdF required assistance from Patrick Ottis Company after several transmission components welded themselves together. A bolt came dislodged on the shift linkage of a Citroën ID promptly stranding it, but Derek's stash of spare bolts saved the day. Differentials were grenaded, and problematic torpedo fuses were replaced while still in motion. A woman in a Honda Accord even PIT-maneuvered a pre-war Bentley on the Golden Gate Bridge. The Carmudgeons discuss past rally experiences in a W201 190E in Europe, Jason's 5000-mile trek to Ohio in his Scirocco, the Orange Blossom Rally in a Mazda Cosmo, and the BABE Rally in a $400 Cadillac stretch limo. Derek touches on the Colorado Grand Rally and Copper State Rally, and the boys discuss possibly starting the Curmudgeon Mille e Uno Rally. Derek points out that Miles Collier, cofounder of the precursor to the SCCA, posited that there are 2 types of enthusiasts: contemplative and experiential. Rallies are definitely for the latter. Plus Jason wears an un-tailored button-down, we dive headfirst into porta potties, and we wonder if the 1988 Honda Accord is too reliable to rally. Learn more about your ad choices.
Erica Hellerstein's reporting for El Tímpano follows the story of Pedro Romero Perez, a survivor of the 2023 Half Moon Bay mass shooting that left seven people dead, including his brother Jose. The tragedy exposed deplorable conditions in San Mateo County's agricultural industry: farm workers earning less than minimum wage while living in shipping containers without running water. Perez, who survived five gunshot wounds, emerged as an unexpected voice for change through a lawsuit against his former employer.

Zoe Chait is a California State Parks Lifeguard working in Half Moon Bay, CA. Zoe started as a junior lifeguard and has progressed to lifeguarding professionally along with traveling the world chasing waves and competing. At 18 years old and just a few years of Lifeguard experience under her belt she's able to offer a very unique perspective on life. Zoe has faced many unique challenges working in Half Moon Bay which is characterized by approximately 50 miles of rocky coastline, dangerous waves and beaches, with minimal resources. It is also home to Mavericks, which happens to be her home surf break. Zoe is currently chasing a professional surfing career in big waves and (as she refers to it) "small waves too". Zoe and I discuss her unique perspective from these two worlds, how they are interconnected, and what she thinks about lifeguarding. Zoe also had the opportunity to perform unique off-duty rescues in her hometown which showcase a tight knit community and reflect a global sense of helping others as a lifeguard.Thank you as always for listening!Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-lifeguard-project/donations

Rachael Webster recounts the surreal experience of having her airplane stolen from Palo Alto Airport. Initially mistaking the tampered aircraft for a kind gesture, she later received a call from the club informing her that her Citabria had been stolen and flown toward San Carlos with its transponder off. The aircraft was eventually discovered, nose-down but largely intact, on a beach south of Half Moon Bay. The thief, a man calling himself “Sun Rock,” had allegedly sought to expose airport security flaws. After landing, he went for tacos and was promptly arrested. The recovery process was complex, requiring approvals from multiple agencies, delaying removal and worsening damage due to saltwater exposure. Although insurance nearly totaled the plane, it was instead repaired after months of delays due to maintenance backlogs. Despite the ordeal, Rachael remains positive, humorously considering marketing her aircraft as the only tailwheel trainer with "real beach landing experience." She has since launched a specialized tailwheel flight school, Next Level Tailwheel, incorporating Citabrias and Kitfox aircraft. Reflecting on the experience, she emphasizes patience in aircraft repairs, valuing skilled trades, and accepting that determined thieves will find a way—bike locks and all. Navigating Real Estate Challenges: Insights from Dan and Kaelee from Open the Gate Show Join Kaelee, a dedicated real estate agent from Sacramento County, and Dan, a partner at Finley Home Services, as they share their experiences and insights in the real estate industry. In this engaging episode, Kaelee talks about overcoming market challenges, her career path, and how she finds joy in helping clients buy and sell homes. Dan provides his perspective on pest control, home inspections, and the importance of consistency and hard work. Together, they also discuss their podcast 'Open the Gate,' which aims to offer transparency and practical advice for success in real estate. Whether you're a seasoned agent or new to the industry, this episode is packed with valuable information and inspiring stories. Kaelee has been soaking up the Sacramento sun since 1990, and after college, she spread her wings and headed to the glitz and glamour of L.A. There, she dabbled in all the classic Hollywood hustles: acting, modeling, and perfecting her restaurant tray-balancing skills. But just when she thought she might star in a blockbuster (or at least get a killer Yelp review), fate swooped in and she was recruited by a hard money lender in Calabasas. Little did she know, this would be the plot twist that set her on her real estate journey. Fast forward to 2017: Kaelee returns to her Sacramento roots and dives headfirst into business development for a new brokerage called Answer Home Loans. Spoiler alert: they're now the biggest mortgage broker in the Sacramento area. She snagged her real estate license in 2018 and added another chapter by exploring the world of title sales for seven years, soaking up knowledge like a sponge. But in 2024, Kaelee decided it was time to stop being the sidekick and become the hero of her own real estate story. With full throttle ambition, she's now betting on herself, helping people find their dream homes, and living her best Sacramento life. Dan was born in Half Moon Bay, CA, college in Denver where I met my wife (Marina). Moved back to Northern CA for a few years then to Kansas City for 6 years and have been back in the Greater Sac area for the past 12 years. A proud father of 2 incredible kids (Kaleigh & Luccas), an avid sports fan, coach, partner at Finley Home Services and co-host of the Open the Gate Podcast! Tirelessly passionate about building long standing deep relationships and business growth!

And to this day, I'm still working for now has been, I just, in my own way, want to help make the world a better place. And I would love to be able to feel like I'm doing that on a daily basis. Now, I'm in senior leadership, and so there's a little bit less connection with the actual member that we're helping, but it's still there. I'm able to make bigger differences on a larger scale and work with a pretty large team here—about a little over 100 team members. And then, of course, when I'm over at Magnol, being able to speak with the guests is, I mean, the best part.Krissy reflects on the most fulfilling part of the Rice Program[34:53]: Maya: In terms of the Rice program, what have been the most fulfilling parts of it for you? But also for me, the end of the program international trip, our class went to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. That was a profound experience for me. On the pitfalls of perfectionism and taking risks[32:19] Krissy: I think for those who have a high performing or high potential or whatever term you want to use for people that like to try hard and accomplish things.[32:28]: Maya: Perfectionist?[32:31]: Krissy: Yeah. That there's this kind of—it's not a dark side, but it's not the most maybe healthier, positive thing that you start to think, well, maybe I just won't start something that I'm not totally guaranteed will be successful to the level of success that I hold dear. Max talks with Mark Kolber about Flying IFR in and out of Airports with no Instrument Approaches. Mark Kolber traces his expertise in aviation law to his background as a trial lawyer and a CFI. He emphasizes the importance of understanding rules, regulations, and procedures in IFR, highlighting that a significant portion of IFR involves adherence to regulations due to the potential impact on others. The conversation delves into a specific scenario where a listener reports a Homeowners Association (HOA) planning to ban IFR departures from Sea Ranch, which is a private airport in Northern California. Mark clarifies that there is no regulatory prohibition for Part 91 pilots from taking off IFR from an airport without instrument approaches. He emphasizes that such departures are legal, citing examples of airports where IFR takeoffs occur regularly. The discussion expands to explore the safety considerations associated with IFR departures in IMC from airports without instrument approaches. Mark references regulations like 91.175, which provides guidelines for IFR takeoff and landing, specifying stricter rules for landings compared to departures. The conversation touches on the distinction between Part 91 and Part 135 operations. Mark explains that Part 135 imposes a direct prohibition on IFR operations from airports without approved standard instrument approach procedures. He highlights the role of Operational Specifications (OPSPEC) in allowing deviations from certain regulations for Part 135 operators. Mark delves into the FAA's assessment of airports, particularly the evaluation of obstacle departure procedures (ODP) and how they contribute to safe departures. He explains the purpose of ODPs and the FAA's meticulous assessment process, emphasizing that private airports without instrument approaches lack such evaluations. The podcast explores the concept of creating one's own ODP for airports lacking official assessments. Mark suggests relying on Electronic Flight Bags (EFB) with FAA databases, incorporating local knowledge, and assessing terrain and obstacles using available tools. Mark clarifies that Part 91 pilots have the discretion to fly or not fly ODPs unless specifically assigned by ATC. For Part 135 pilots, adherence to ODPs is mandatory unless certain exceptions apply. The conversation briefly touches on filing IFR to private airports not in the FAA's database. Mark recommends using identifiers if available and provides insights into filing to and from using lat-long coordinates. In summary, the interview provides a comprehensive overview of IFR regulations, safety considerations, and the nuances surrounding departures and arrivals at airports without instrument approaches. The discussion is enriched by Mark Kolber's legal and aviation expertise, offering valuable insights for both pilots and aviation enthusiasts.
