In early June, Dr. Alina Chan published an essay in The New York Times arguing what the media once considered a conspiracy: Covid-19 originated in the Wuhan lab. The essay made waves on social media. To some, it was a breath of fresh air from the intelligentsia that validated long-held beliefs about where the costliest pandemic in modern history started. But to others, like our other guest today, it was irresponsible and scientifically misleading. Dr. John Moore is a prominent virologist and professor at Cornell University's Weill Medical College. He penned a rebuttal for “The Nation” in which he argued that The New York Times is badly failing their readers on Covid by publishing Chan's argument. Chan is not a virologist; she's a molecular biologist at Harvard and MIT's Broad Institute. Early on in the pandemic, however, she took an interest in understanding the origins of Covid. She then published a book about lab leak that she claims drew the ire of the media and scientific establishment. In this episode of We The 66, we share BOTH of their perspectives.

In Wolfe's rebuttal to Kaye's flawed argument, she writes: “And even if Chinese children are safer from freelance criminals looking to shove them into unmarked vans and cart them off, the government's own unmarked vans are a bigger threat to kids who deviate from the party line.” Read the full article, “Actually, the CCP Is the Worst Co-Parent Imaginable,” at: https://reason.com/2023/01/18/actually-the-ccp-is-the-worst-co-parent-imaginable/

“Do you want to continue to live out the patterns of your childhood? Or do you want to make different choices? Are you programmed or are you self-determining?” So says Loretta Ross, Professor at Smith College in the Program for the Study of Women and Gender, a founder of reproductive justice theory, and an expert on feminism, racism, and human rights. Loretta has co-written three books on reproductive justice and is the author of the forthcoming book, Calling In the Calling Out Culture. Loretta has been a leader in the human rights movement for decades—she worked with Reverend C.T. Vivian, one of Martin Luther King's right hands, to rehabilitate former members of hate groups. As a rape and incest survivor herself, she taught Black feminism to incarcerated rapists. She has learned, throughout her career, to lift the hood on peoples' lived experiences—the identity they project to the world—and determine, through courageous conversation, where their humanity lies, and where their values overlap. She believes with a certain fierceness that we have far more in common with each other—across the entire political spectrum—than not. In recent years, she has become a vocal opponent of cancel culture—ironically, people have attempted to cancel her for this—because, as she explains, she's interested in being part of a movement and not a cult. She believes that political purity and the policing of other allies is...the opposite of helpful. And that in the process of building coalitions for sweeping social change and evolution, we alienate and lose people who would otherwise want the very same things as us. Today, she gives us a crash course in the practice of calling in - an alternative to calling out, or publicly shaming those whose behavior or beliefs we deem unacceptable. In a culture devoid of empathy and grace, Ross implores us to offer people a chance to change, to give them the opportunity to be as good on the outside as they think they are on the inside. For Ross, recognizing that how we do the work is just as important as the work we do, gives us the incredible opportunity to bring more people in, building the power base of the social justice movement. When we choose to use calling in practices, she says, we choose them because of who we are, not because of who the other person is, and when we affirm the humanity of others, we affirm our own humanity in turn.  EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Identifying your circles of influence…(8:31) The Uncle Frank strategy…(21:14)  Programming vs. self-determining…(27:29) Guidelines for the creation of a calling-in environment…(42:15) MORE FROM LORETTA ROSS Loretta Ross' Website Preorder her book, Calling in the Calling Out Culture, by joining her mailing list Take the online course: Calling In the Calling Out Culture in the Age of Trump Follow Loretta on Twitter  READ HER WORK Undivided Rights: Women of Color Organizing for Reproductive Justice Reproductive Justice: an Introduction Radical Reproductive Justice: Foundations, Theory, Practice, Critique Reproductive Justice as Intersectional Feminist Activism   DIG DEEPER I'm a Black Feminist. TheModernMoron podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 20, 2021 40:33

Welcome to a program where if you hear the phrase tick-tock you can rest assured we are talking about either a clock or the time of day… it's the Modern Moron Little bit of a long episode for you  and in it we spend a great deal of time talking about exclusivity.  That's a good thing right?  You hear about something being exclusive that means not everyone can get it, or experience it.  And not only does it mean you do get to experience it, most people do NOT get to experience it… whatever “it” is… they're excluded.   Now that I say it out loud, this podcast seems pretty exclusive because it's basically it's you, me and maybe one other person we don't know.  That's pretty exclusive! We talk about exclusive brands of alcohol like George Clooney's Tequila who started Casamigos Tequila in 2013 along with two other partners for about 1.8 million… so $600K a piece.  In 2018 they sold it for $1B, that's billion with a B, which made him the highest paid actor in 2018 even though he didn't make film.  So be looking for Senator Single Barrel Rye Whiskey coming to a… specialty liquor store?  Hmm I think it's going to be more exclusive than that.  You'll probably have to go straight to him. Next up, we talk about the latest investigation into Trump searching for people leaking information to the news media during his administration.  Trump went to Apple to get phone records.  The Senator is upset because he says Obama did the same thing while he was in office. Now, you know that the last thing I would ever want to do is agree blindly with the Senator.  So… I did look up a couple of things and when I say I looked it up I mean barely… no, I do not read the entire article from newspapers, that's why most decent journalists should write with the traditional inverted pyramid goddammit.   Okay, the articles I'm citing are from a NYT Op Ed.  Yes it's an opinion article BUT, it's the NY Times.  Also  Wired Magazine.  You may be thinking, “why Wired?”  And I will tell you if you'll calm down and listen to me for a second.  I chose Wired because A) I've heard of it, even though they are a tech magazine that focuses on technology as it effects areas of our life including politics, B) because it's another left leaning source… left center and C) because mediabiasfactcheck.org rates them HIGH due to proper sourcing. From a 2013 Wired article - The Department of Justice secretly obtained phone records for reporters and editors who work for the Associated Press news agency, including records for the home phones and cell phones of individual journalists, according to the AP, in what the agency characterized as "serious interference with AP's constitutional rights to gather and report the news." The records, covering all of April and May 2012, were seized by the DoJ earlier that year and covered more than 20 separate phone lines. The records listed outgoing calls for both the work and personal phone numbers of individual reporters, as well as the general phone lines for AP bureaus in New York, Washington and Hartford, Conn., and a main number used by AP reporters in the House of Representatives. And this is from the December 2016 OP ED in the New York Times:  If Donald Trump decides as president to throw a whistle-blower in jail for trying to talk to a reporter, or gets the F.B.I. to spy on a journalist, he will have one man to thank for bequeathing him such expansive power: Barack Obama. Mr. Trump made his animus toward the news media clear during the presidential campaign, often expressing his disgust with coverage through Twitter or in diatribes at rallies. So if his campaign is any guide, Mr. Trump seems likely to enthusiastically embrace the aggressive crackdown on journalists and whistle-blowers that is an important yet little understood component of Mr. Obama's presidential legacy. Criticism of Mr. Obama's stance on press freedom, government transparency and secrecy is hotly disputed by the White House, but many journalism groups say the record is clear. Over the past eight years, (remember this was written in 2016) the administration has prosecuted nine cases involving whistle-blowers and leakers, compared with only three by all previous administrations combined. It has repeatedly used the Espionage Act, a relic of World War I-era red-baiting, not to prosecute spies but to go after government officials who talked to journalists. Under Mr. Obama, the Justice Department and the F.B.I. have spied on reporters by monitoring their phone records, labeled one journalist an unindicted co-conspirator in a criminal case for simply doing reporting and issued subpoenas to other reporters to try to force them to reveal their sources and testify in criminal cases. Now I don't think this article would be allowed to go to print in the NY Times if those statements were untrue, especially citing the number of cases.  Again, I'd take Obama over Trump any day of the week as a president but it's good to point out hypocrisy when it occurs.   And of course, no politician, regardless of party affiliation, wants what they consider classified information to get leaked from someone who is supposedly on their team.   Okay, so then we get to my favorite part of this episode where the Senator tells me he's going on a retreat to one of the most exclusive social clubs on the west coast.  The fun part is trying to figure out WHO decided this club is so exclusive.  Because when I try to search for it guess which club doesn't show up in any top ten lists of exclusive clubs?  He finally has me go to the Wikipedia page for the club he's talking about, but you and I know that either of us can make any statement we want on a wikipedia page so apparently this club is so exclusive that nobody knows about it.  Hell, my house is just as exclusive as this goddamn place.  I'm the only member.  How's that for exclusive?  Okay, I've talked to much already and the episode hasn't even started.  It's time to get fancy and really exclusive on the Modern Moron. CLOSE - Wow, long winded.  By the way the tequila from way back at the beginning of the episode isn't Geroge Clooney Tequila, it's Casamigos tequila as I said. George Clooney didn't sell his name or anything, that's just me being an idiot.  That's it, thank you for listening to this 96th episode of The Modern Moron… you know, for old people.  See you next time. Although Mary is well versed on the detrimental effects of RED-S and eating disorders now, she is honest that it wasn't so easy when she was experiencing it first hand herself. She goes in depth on the struggle to understand what her body & mind was going through, including some denial, and she shares the reality that she is still on this journey, albeit with a great team and support system moving forward. Mary's advice is to seek professional guidance sooner, rather than later! And if you'd like to take her up on that, head to my website www.RiseUpNutritionRUN.com to learn more or book a call direct with me by clicking here. You can follow Mary Cain on Instagram @RunMaryCain  Bio that was read in the intro: Mary Cain is a professional middle-distance runner, and Tracksmith NYC Manager. She was the youngest American to represent the US at a World Championships meet in 2013 at age 17. She has run remarkable times and set records in distances from 800 meters to 3000 meters in the sport of Track & Field. In 2019 Mary publicly shared her story of the physical and mental abuse that she endured while at the Nike Oregon Project through a video op-ed with the New York Times. Since then, Mary has spoken out about her experiences with RED-S, disordered eating, mental health to help other female athletes who may be struggling with these experiences. To read the NYT Op-Ed please visit:  “I was the Fastest Girl in American Until I Joined Nike”

The Roy Green Show Podcast Following the court ruling over the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion, we look at the fate of the pipeline and Trudeau's handling of the situation. Our guest Richard Masson, former CEO of the Alberta Petroleum Marketing Commission, says that what this means for Alberta and Canada's economy is “real sad.” The New York Times published an anonymous op-ed, claimed to be written by an appointed White House senior staffer. It offered a scathing take on U.S. President Trump and also assured that there was a resistance working inside the White House. But will any of this have any long-term effect on Trump or the Republican? And Will the New York Times be viewed differently now, for publishing this piece? 18,000 people recently marched in Paris in support of taking actions in response to climate change. California Governor Jerry Brown will hold a conference in response to Trump pulling the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Accord. But there is evidence that shows that the Global Carbon Tax would drive up food prices and push an additional 78 million people toward hunger. Dr. Bjorn Lomborg, international economist and environmentalist, discusses this. The Humboldt Broncos begin their new season next week. They are matched up against the Nipawin Hawks in Nipawin, which is where the team was headed last April 6 of this year, when their bus was struck by a truck, resulting in the deaths of 16 people. We check in with Ryan Kessler of Global News Saskatchewan, to find out how the community of Humboldt is doing. Guests: Richard Masson, Executive Fellow at the University of Calgary School of Public Policy, and former CEO of the Alberta Petroleum Marketing Commission Fran Coombs, Managing Editor of Rasmussen Reports, and former senior editor with the Washington Times Dr. Bjorn Lomborg, international economist and environmentalist, Founder and Director of the Consensus Centre Think Tank in Copenhagen Ryan Kessler, Reporter with Global News Saskatchewan See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Because the writer and the New York Times are colluding to throw President Trump and the White House into chaos, so that we are more vulnerable to terrorism! While President Trump is forced to play a guessing game to figure out who the writer is, ISIS, Al Qaeda, and our other enemies are taking full advantage to plan their next attack. This isn’t journalism - it’s kindergarten! Pin the tail on the donkey! They may tell themselves they’re doing it for the good of the country, but they’re really endangering us all - Democrats and Republicans alike! Hear why “lodestar” actually points away from Vice President Pence. And hear what words actually point to involvement of the heretic therapists who belong to the group Duty to Warn. These self-appointed so-called mental health professionals, who are trying to hide behind their professional licenses in order to proselytize their politics, have wormed their way into Washington and might well have had their finger in the Op-Ed pie! While President Trump is being forced to spend time ferreting out his mole, Radical Islamists can take it easy, America is destroying itself! And just in time for 9/11!

The New York Times has a splashy interactive editorial, "Trump’s Nuclear Arsenal." It's good, but gets a few things wrong -- things that matter like Mutual Assured Destruction, Robert McNamara's famous thought experiment on sizing US nuclear forces, and how the US targets nuclear weapons. Also, they misuse decimate.   Aaron and Jeffrey talk through the problems with US nuclear policy and Jeffrey's proposal to state that the US will not use nuclear weapon against a target if a conventional one will do.   Links of Note:   The NYT Op Ed.   Jeffrey and Scott Sagan's article, and its shorter, op-ed version in the Washington Post.    Aaron's recently revived podcast, Turkey Wonk.

The more I read about The Dallas Buyers Club, the less I like it, which is too bad because I really like that movie.First, I read the that film's portrayal of Ron Woodruff, the hard-bitten homophobe who gradually softens is wrong. Woodruff was, according to friends and family, comfortably bisexual. He never had to go through the transition you see in the film.Support the show: http://www.wnpr.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

If the students don't own their class-notes - or at least, cannot sell them commercially - who does? The professor? The university? The state?2) UK: Every email and website to be stored - UK TelegraphEvery email, phone call and website visit is to be recorded and stored after the Coalition Government revived controversial Big Brother snooping plans.3) Court: No Teacher Speech Rights on Curriculum, from Education Week  - Teachers have no First Amendment free-speech protection for curricular decisions they make in the classroom, a federal appeals court ruled on Thursday."Only the school board has ultimate responsibility for what goes on in the classroom, legitimately giving it a say over what teachers may (or may not) teach in the classroom," the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit, in Cincinnati, said in its opinion. 4) Some snowed-in Ohio students to learn online from The Washington Post - Way to ruin snow days, Ohio.Main Topic:   Waiting for Superman, Our Take with Special Guest, Lucy Gray an education consultant in Chicago. What Superman Got Wrong Point By Point - The Washington Post - The Answer Sheet - by Rick Ayers - CTThe amped-up rhetoric of crisis and failure everywhere is being used to promote business-model reforms that are destabilizing even in successful schools and districts. A panel at NBC’s Education Nation Summit, taking place in New York today and tomorrow, was originally titled "Does Education Need a Katrina?" Such disgraceful rhetoric undermines reasonable debate.NYT Opinion Page on Waiting for Superman & The Education Debate - from Saturday 10/2New York Review of Books piece on Waiting for SupermanWhat I Learned from NBC’s Education Summit - by Brian Jones - CTOn the same thread - Here we have a message honed to perfection... for the wealthy: the unions are the problem; the teachers need to be cheaper; give me money now for a few beautiful schools that can help break the unions and open up the education market; but don't worry, we don't want too much; we certainly don't want what your children have. That's what I learned from NBC's Education Nation Summit. Beware CEOs who say teachers are the problem. And beware CEO solutions. You might find yourself in a room without windows.(CT’s markup page)  http://markup.io/v/qe0sgyt1c0knWaiting for Superman: Don't look for easy answers the film implies, panel of educators says - Stanford Report - TATEducation spending in America has more than doubled in the last four decades – yet math and reading scores have flat-lined.What's the remedy? A panel of educators at Stanford cautioned against the quick policy cures implied in the explosive Waiting for Superman.Grading School Choice - NYT Op Ed piece reminding us all of the dangers of overpromising (a la Waiting for Superman) - CTOverpromising leads inevitably to disappointment. When it comes to raising test scores, the grail of most reformers, school choice’s record is still ambiguous. For every charter school success story like the Harlem Children’s Zone and the KIPP network — both touted in Guggenheim’s documentary — there’s a charter school where scores are worse than the public school status quo. The same is true for vouchers and merit pay: the jury is still out on whether either policy consistently raises academic performance. This doesn’t mean that school choice doesn’t work, Hess argues. It just means that the benefits are often more modest and incremental than many reformers want to think.Tim's Tech Tidbit:  Hands Off! and Little Snitch - How to know when your machine is “calling home” to someone else!Endorsements: Roger: http://www.ncrel.org/sdrs/areas/issues/envrnmnt/drugfree/sa2lk16.htm polychromatic syllacious styluses w/ concept mapping Kevin: The Tinkering School: Gever Tully (Woodie Flowers at MIT?
