OverviewIn this annual InfoComm preview episode, Joe Way welcomes back David Labuskes, CEO of AVIXA, for what may be Dave's final Higher Ed AV Podcast appearance before his retirement at the end of the year. Together, they discuss why InfoComm is more than a trade show, how end users and higher education continue to shape the future of AV, and why community-centered organizations like HETMA have become essential to the industry's growth. The conversation also reflects on Dave's leadership, the importance of intentional networking, and the legacy of leaving the industry better than he found it.Show NotesInfoComm season is here, and that means it is time for one of the Higher Ed AV Podcast's favorite annual traditions: a conversation with Dave Labuskes, CEO of AVIXA. As the countdown begins to the industry's biggest event, Joe and Dave preview what attendees can expect in Las Vegas, from new show floor activations to keynotes, education, networking, and the growing presence of the higher ed AV community.Dave shares how the role of the end user has evolved from attendee to central community member, noting that end users now represent one of the fastest-growing segments of the InfoComm audience. For higher education, that shift has created new opportunities for connection, advocacy, professional growth, and industry influence, especially through the continued growth of HETMA.The conversation also explores why InfoComm works because it is owned and produced by AVIXA, an association whose mission is rooted in advancing the AV profession rather than simply producing a profitable event. Dave explains that when the show's purpose is tied to the health of the industry, it becomes a platform for standards, education, community, and the future direction of AV itself.Joe and Dave also talk through practical advice for first-time and returning attendees. Dave encourages listeners to be intentional, define what success looks like before arriving, schedule key meetings, attend community events, and leave room for serendipity. Whether someone is looking for peers, mentors, manufacturer training, education sessions, or new technology discoveries, the key is having a plan while staying open to the unexpected. The episode closes with a heartfelt reflection on Dave's career, his favorite memories from leading AVIXA, the emotional significance of InfoComm after the pandemic, and what he hopes his legacy will be. His answer is simple and powerful: leave it better than you found it.Key TakeawaysInfoComm is not just a trade show. It is an industry event where community, education, commerce, and leadership come together to shape the future of AV.End users, including those in higher education, are no longer just attendees. They are a vital part of the AV community and one of the most important voices in the direction of the industry.HETMA's growth represents the power of building a “community within the community,” giving higher ed AV professionals a place to connect, grow, advocate, and lead.Attendees should make a plan before arriving at InfoComm. Define your goals, schedule key conversations, identify sessions and exhibitors, and know what success looks like before the week begins. At the same time, leave room for discovery. Some of the most valuable moments happen in unscheduled conversations, smaller booths, community gatherings, and unexpected encounters.Dave's leadership philosophy centers on mission, community, courage, trust, heart, and leaving the organization better than he found it.Mentioned in This EpisodeAVIXAInfoCommHETMAHigher Ed AV AwardsEducation SummitAVIXA Women's BreakfastThe PitchAI-powered collaborationModern workplace technologyHETMA booth and community programmingPrism ScholarshipSCN Hall of FameGuestDave LabuskesCEO, AVIXAdlabuskes@avixa.orghttps://www.infocommshow.orghttps://www.avixa.orgHostJoe WayHigher Ed AV Podcastjoe@josiahway.comCalls to ActionRegister for InfoComm and use code HETMA for a free show pass.Use code HETMA for member pricing on the Education Summit.Attend the Higher Ed AV Awards at higheredavawards.com.Learn more about AVIXA at avixa.org.

In this episode, Sean, Kelly, and Julian tackle a provocative question: is the traditional "Hello, World" first program dead? What was once a thrilling moment of agency — telling a computer to do something and watching it respond — now competes with AI assistants, voice interfaces, and tools that can build entire applications from a single prompt. The conversation dives into the different types of learners Kelly encounters in her classroom: the students who want AI to do everything, the ones who light up when they catch AI writing unused functions, and the old-school coders who just want to write it themselves. Sean shares how he turned a massive org design challenge at work into a Python project with a SQLite database, proving that the best way to learn is still to find a real problem and solve it with code. Kelly describes her fourth-quarter experiment to create a new "Hello, World" moment for her 8th graders using school-approved AI tools, while Julian raises the important question of whether the real challenge is just showing people that code can solve their problems in the first place. The trio also explores whether AI can strip away the administrative clutter in teaching to let educators focus on what matters: engagement, personalization, and good pedagogy. The episode wraps with two pieces of news: the PyCon US Education Summit is confirmed for Thursday, May 14th, and Julian Sequeira is officially joining the show as a regular co-host — complete with a live, slightly fumbled first sign-off. Key Topics Why "Hello, World" no longer delivers the same dopamine hit for new learners The three types of student responses to AI-assisted coding Using AI to write deterministic code vs. using generative AI for repetitive tasks Sean's Python + SQLite org design tool as a real-world "solve a problem with code" example Kelly's classroom experiments with AI-generated Python apps for 8th graders EarSketch and making music with Python as a reliable engagement tool Whether AI can remove administrative clutter and let teachers focus on pedagogy The concept of "desirable difficulty" in learning Bridging the knowledge gap: helping non-coders see code as a problem-solving option PyCon US Education Summit — May 14, 2026 Julian Sequeira joining as a regular co-host Wins of the Week Kelly: Bringing two Pine Crest colleagues to PyCon US this year — Chris and Kayla, an aspiring data scientist who is excited to dive into Python and attend the Education Summit. Julian: His 10-year-old son scored his first basketball basket after multiple seasons of showing up, practicing, and persisting — a nothing-but-net shot that had the entire gym erupting. Sean: Used Claude to create a comprehensive, interactive study guide from his daughter's 11-page science PDF on water quality — complete with clickable concept maps, pH level visualizations, and chain-of-events diagrams that made 7th-grade science genuinely engaging. Announcements PyCon US Education Summit — Thursday, May 14, 2026 in Pittsburgh. Kelly is chairing the summit with 150–200 seats available. Proposals are open and encouraged. Hello our favourite tech geniuses! We start with some good news. Yes, Mali, the Bernese Mountain dog who was missing for 2 weeks, has been rescued from a 61-metre-high cliff edge on an island off the coast of Donegal. She ran off during a storm but now she has been reunited with her humans and went home for a big dinner and a snooze - yaaaay!! Óran has had enough of the terrible Irish summer and has decided to move to The Netherlands where it always seems to be warm. Clodagh has her patient face on. Meanwhile, we've got news on Seeing AI's object detector. (Maybe it'll help Óran find the sun?) And Jan is looking forward to IOS 18. Will Siri be any better...? We sure hope so, cos she's pretty useless right now! Our guest this week is a talented young woman named Maura Moore-McCune from County Meath in Ireland. Maura is here to tell us about a mobile app she is developing called Vision Impaired Person's Moving Object Detector (VIPMOD) which can detect nearby moving vehicles. This will be especially handy if you want to check it's safe to cross at a junction, or if you are not sure if you can hear an approaching electric vehicle. Maura was invited to present her work on VIPMOD at the ‘MIT AI & Education Summit' in Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, where she won the top prize for Community Impact – congratulations Maura! If you would like to be a beta tester for this app, email: vipmod.info@gmail.com with your details. Maura would be delighted to have you involved when beta testing starts. Food Tank, in partnership with Niman Ranch, recently hosted their Education Summit at the annual Hog Farmer Appreciation Celebration, an event that recognizes and honors the contributions of independent family farmers in the U.S. This episode features two conversations from the day. First, Dani speaks with Ambassador Ertharin Cousin, Founder and CEO of Food Systems for the Future about the infrastructure that agriculture communities need, the kind of capital required to overcome the pain points in food and agriculture systems, and why investors in the food system must learn that change won't come in a single season. Then Eric Schmid, Economic Development Reporter with the St. Louis Public Radio, sits down with Maisie Ganzler, an advisor and the author of the new book You Can't Market Manure at Lunchtime: And Other Lessons from the Food Industry for Creating a More Sustainable Company. They discuss how food companies can begin setting and working toward sustainability goals, why these initiatives must be baked into every aspect of the company, and the business case for implementing changes that are better for eaters and the planet. While you're listening, subscribe, rate, and review the show; it would mean the world to us to have your feedback. Millions of conservative parents have been suckered into a lie about what education ought to be: That the state should play a major role in it, and that this education can somehow be "neutral" about ideology, religion, and values. Then, these same parents are shocked when their children grow up to be godless liberals. Charlie helps puncture the myths about education in his speech to the Turning Point Academy Educators Summit, then takes questions from teachers in the audience.Support the show: http://www.charliekirk.com/supportSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Episode 111: Exploring Generative AI in Education In Episode 111 of the Teaching Python podcast, join special guest Eric Matthes and your hosts Kelly and Sean as they dive into the intriguing world of generative AI in education. Coming fresh from the Education Summit at PyCon 2023, they provide a comprehensive recap of the event, highlighting the successful speaker topics, the ideal room size, and the engaging breakout sessions that made the summit a resounding success. As an extra resource, Eric Matthes, author of the widely acclaimed "Python Crash Course," joins the discussion, providing valuable insights into the intersection of generative AI and education. For those interested, Eric's book can be found on Amazon (https://amzn.to/3pz7uje). The conversation then delves into the complexities surrounding generative AI, emphasizing that while it holds tremendous potential, it is still in its early stages, leaving us with more questions than answers. To lay the groundwork, the hosts define generative AI and demystify how large language models work, drawing an analogy to refrigerator poetry magnets to aid comprehension. As the discussion unfolds, Kelly, Eric, and Sean raise crucial questions about the role of generative AI, specifically ChatGPT, in education. They explore the optimal level of usage, the necessary policies and governance to support its implementation, and draw parallels to the concept of the "Goldilocks zone" in astronomy, seeking the right balance for effective integration. The episode moves to thought-provoking dialogue regarding the future proficiency levels required for learners in problem-solving scenarios. They examine whether coding proficiency alone will suffice or if learners will need to develop AI literacy, enabling them to harness the power of AI to generate code and solutions. Tune in to Episode 111 of the Teaching Python podcast to gain a deeper understanding of the implications and potential of generative AI in education. As the hosts explore the evolving landscape, they shed light on the importance of finding the right balance and preparing learners for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Dr. Monique Chism is the Under Secretary for Education at Smithsonian Institution. She joins host Mike Palmer to share what it's like to lead education efforts for the Nation's Museum and the thinking that's gone into designing their National Education Summit that's happening later this summer. We begin with Monique's origin story starting in a classroom teaching for 8 years before moving on to work at a nonprofit organization focused on closing achievement gaps and culturally proficient instruction. She then worked in the Department of Education before and at American Institute for Research focusing on taking education research into practice. This all led to Monique joining the Smithsonian Institution two years ago as its Under Secretary for Education. Monique describes the amazing free resources that the Smithsonian provides to educators as we learn what it's like to lead the education program there. We hear what she's got cooking for the 2023 Smithsonian National Education Summit: "Together We Thrive" which is coming in July, touching briefly on each of the themes of the summit: Life on a Sustainable Planet, STEAM Education, Reckoning with Our Racial Past, and An Integrated Arts Education. As we conclude, Monique shares advice for folks passionate about careers in education and provides her perspective on emerging AI and its potential impact on the future of work. Belonging is vital if our kids are to learn. They need to feel understood and safe, and that often starts with teachers. But teachers have a lot on their plates already, and new legislation has them fearful that they'll do or say something that might jeopardize their jobs. While this podcast episode doesn't solve this challenge, it spotlights the need for more conversations around creating spaces for youth who don't want to fit in a box that society created for them. Patti Hearn is a school and educational leader in the Pacific Northwest who started a school for girls and gender non-conforming kids so they would have the opportunity to “become competent risk takers and courageous mistake makers.” In this episode, we talk about why parents and leaders might want to build their own school, why it's so important that we listen to our youth, how to honor student rights, how the legal landscape is impacting our ability to serve all learners, and so much more. Patti has been there and done that and she's now using her knowledge to support other parents and educators in ensuring that more kids have access to the space and education they deserve. About Patti Hearn: Patti Hearn is passionate about education and believes in working to help individuals, families, and schools forge authentic paths. Patti was the Founding Head of Lake Washington Girls Middle School in Seattle, where, for over two decades, she offered girls and gender non-conforming kids the opportunity to become competent risk takers and courageous mistake makers. She then brought her knowledge and passion for innovative middle school programs to lead Seattle School for Boys, and she launched Verge Consulting to provide consultation and coaching to educators, school leaders, and founders of new schools, as well as school placement support for families. Patti shares her thinking and work in feminist, anti-racist, and LGBTQ+ inclusive education, social-emotional learning, startup culture in education, creative confidence, STEAM, executive functioning, and inclusive leadership. Her conference presentations include the National Association of Independent Schools, the International Coalition of Girls' Schools, the Seattle Interactive Conference, the Teaching and Education Summit, and the Northwest Association of Independent Schools. https://www.linkedin.com/in/patriciahearn/ https://twitter.com/patti_hearn Jump in the Conversation: [1:33] - Where Patti's school transformation began [2:55] - Helping students to become competent risk takers and courageous mistake makers [5:25] - Why you might want to build a startup school [7:17] - How to make a change [8:19] - Youth speaking up about gender noncoforming; we need to address that [9:40] - All kids have value; it's about loving the individual not about the labels [10:26] - how the legal landscape is impacting our ability to serve all learners fully [11:56] - All kids benefit from inclusion [12:45] - Teachers aren't clear enough about they can and can't say and they fear for their livelihoods [14:32] - It's life-saving to have a caring adult at school [18:27] - How to honor student rights and be an advocate [20:30] - Turbo Time [22:39] - What people need to know about serving LGTBQ+ kids [25:48] - Patti's Magic Wand [20:02] - Maureen's takeaways Links & Resources Verge Consulting Connect with Patti on LinkedIn Episode 120: How Legal Decisions Impact Our Schools with Karen Kalzer Unprotected: A Menoir by Billy Porter Every Kid Needs a Champion - TED Talk by Rita Pierson We Need to Talk About an Injustice - TED Talk by Bryan Stevenson Email Maureen Maureen's TEDx: Changing My Mind to Change Our Schools The Education Evolution Facebook: Follow Education Evolution Twitter: Follow Education Evolution LinkedIn: Follow Education Evolution EdActive Collective Maureen's book: Creating Micro-Schools for Colorful Mismatched Kids Micro-school feature on Good Morning America The Micro-School Coalition Facebook: The Micro-School Coalition LEADPrep
