Welcome to the July edition of Learning Unboxed. As many of you know, we tend to take the month of July off, but we have heard from our loyal listeners that you would love content during your summer vacation. So we have crafted a set of four episodes to run during the July holiday that are all about exploring student agency. For those working to make a meaningful shift in your classrooms, schools, and communities, the most crucial place to start is making the decision to shift from a teacher-led ecosystem to one that is student-led. But this shift can be daunting. So join us as we explore four examples of student-centered learning that demonstrate what's possible. We've come to believe that protecting kids from experiences is a good thing, but what ends up happening is we cripple their ability to make decisions, function as adults, and be intrinsically motivated in anything. Gever Tulley is the co-founder of Tinkering School which came about in 2005. We talk about how trusting kids lead to big things, how teachers and students can collaborate effectively, and why age-restricted learning is a tool of the past.To learn more, visit: pastfoundation.orgWe unbox:How Gever put kids in charge of his summer campsWhy Tinkering School exists and how it helps kids understand their own potentialTaking a collaborative approach to education with teachers and studentsThe benefits of mixed-age educationCreating educational “arcs” of learningResources:gevertulley.comtinkeringschool.comInstagram: @gevertulleyProduced by Nova Media
Problems and adversity are part of life. No matter how well you prepare, there are bound to be some things that will not go according to plan. And we learn early on that there is no straight line to success in business and in life. There will always be unforeseen obstacles along your path that will derail your efforts. But did you know that the path of many twists and turns that we're taking toward our goal is strewn with gifts waiting to be discovered? Join me today in an Elevate exclusive episode where we dive deep into the subject of problems, failures, and adversity and how we can turn them around to work in our favor. All we have to do is dig deep and look for the gift and meaning that lie within. Let me guide you through the key steps to finding the gift in problems and adversity as you steer your way to achieving your goals. Key Points from This Episode: Tyler introduces the episode's topic - finding the gift in problems and adversity. What does Napoleon Hill say about adversities and failure in his book, “Think and Grow Rich”? In his book, “The Beginning of Infinity”, what does David Deutsch say about solving problems, creating knowledge, error correction, and infinite progress? Tyler talks about his challenging life as a real estate investor and how dealing with various problems was key to his progress. How adversities primed Tyler to create systems and processes, sharpen his skills, strengthen his mindset for bigger problems, capture more opportunities, and achieve more success. Tyler highlights the importance of embracing problems and finding the gifts within even if this is hard to do amidst setbacks and failures. What does William Shakespeare say about embracing adversity? Gever Tulley's words of wisdom about persistence and resilience. Tyler explains the five steps to finding the gift in problems and adversity. Tweetables: “Every adversity, every failure, every heartbreak, carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit.” – Napoleon Hill “An unproblematic state is a state without creative thought. Its other name is death.” ― David Deutsch “Every problem that is interesting is also soluble.” ― David Deutsch “Each of my problems was the pathway to more success, and getting closer to my bigger goals.” - Tyler Chesser “Overcoming problems has allowed me to sharpen my skills in communication, leadership, and critical thinking, problem-solving skills. These are immeasurable in value. They are prerequisites to going bigger.” - Tyler Chesser “It continues to be difficult for me to remember that problems are gifts, especially when I am in the middle of another problem.” - Tyler Chesser “Let me embrace thee, sour adversity, for wise men say it is the wisest course.” - William Shakespeare “Persistence and resilience only come from having been given the chance to work through difficult problems.” - Gever Tulley Links Mentioned: CF Capital Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill The Beginning of Infinity by David Deutsch
We believe kids learn best through experience. But what happens when we start holding our young ones back in a misguided attempt at keeping them safe? Gever Tulley is the co-founder of Tinkering School which came about in 2005. It gives kids the opportunity to prove how capable they are by supplying them with the tools to solve real-world problems and watching them make mistakes, learn, and build great things. We've come to believe that protecting kids from experiences is a good thing, but what ends up happening is we cripple their ability to make decisions, function as adults, and be intrinsically motivated in anything. Imagine a place where it is believed that kids are more capable than we know – so capable that they make rollercoasters and treehouses, from concept through to the full build, using real tools and the secret ingredient, time. What I am describing is the Tinkering School. Today I have the man behind the concept joining me all the way from the US, welcome Gever Tully.
In this week's episode, I sit down with Ned Johnson, author, speaker, and founder of PrepMatters, an educational company providing academic tutoring, educational planning, and standardized test preparation. Ned's books have helped me through so many parts of my parenting journey and I share some of the stories in this conversation. Listen in as we talk about: Why parents are so afraid to give their kids more control What a self driven child is How giving kids control helps them to be self motivated Tips for parents to manage their anxiety when it comes to their kids' choices Tips to help your kids see the bigger picture A professional “tutor-geek” since 1993 and battle-tested veteran of test prep, stress regulation and student performance, Ned has spent nearly more than 40,000 one-on-one hours helping students conquer an alphabet of standardized tests, learning and honing his insightful interpersonal skills. Ned coaches clients to manage their anxiety, and find the motivation to reach their full potential. In 2006, Ned co-authored the book Conquering the SAT: How Parents Can Help Students Overcome the Pressure and Succeed, which tackles the outsized role anxiety plays in standardized testing. With Dr. William Stixrud, Ned co-authored The Self-Driven Child: The Science and Sense of Giving Your Kids More Control Over Their Lives and “What Do You Say?: How to Talk With Kids to Promote Motivation, Stress Tolerance, and a Happy Home”, due out August 17. Their book explores how fostering children's autonomy can help solve two challenges endemic to kids today: facing anxiety and developing intrinsic motivation. Ned is also the host of the PrepTalks podcast: conversations with parenting and education experts. Aa sought-after speaker and teen coach on study skills, sleep deprivation, parent-teen dynamics, and test anxiety, and his work is featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, NPR, BBC, and many others. In 2005 Gever Tulley accidentally stumbled into starting his own engineering-based summer camp in his backyard called Tinkering School. In this episode we'll hear about the philosophy behind this remarkable program and what can happen when you give kids real tools to solve real problems. Hands-on designing, fabricating and constructing empowers kids and helps them test their theories about the world around them. Giving tinkerers tools, autonomy and space has resulted in some unbelievable projects, like a gondola re-imagined as a dragon flying across their warehouse workspace! This week's Audio Postcard comes to you from Orcas Island, WA! The SeaDoc Society is doing some incredible research and conservation work to ensure the health of the Salish Sea, an inland sea encompassing Puget Sound, the San Juan Islands and the waters off of Vancouver, British Columbia for generations to come. Their Junior SeaDoctor program gives kids the tools to become their own nature detectives in any ecosystem they explore. You can sign up for free to become a Junior Sea Doctor today and receive your very own laminated nature guide in the mail! Daily Parenting Advice To Help You Become The Best Version Of A Parent For Your Child.
Gever Tulley is passionate about re-establishing the freedoms of childhood, self-directed learning, hands-on experiences and the value of play. He is the author of a book for families called 50 Dangerous Things You Should Let Your Children Do, the founder of a school called Brightworks and a summer camp called The Tinkering School. This was an incredibly special interview for me. While I have been a fan of his work for several years, ironically, it is a shared love of Baja that connected us. We cover a broad range of topics including a recent journey he took from the top to the tip of the peninsula. But we also chat about his school, education, children and how amazing they can be if adults just get out of the way and let them be curious about the world around them. Should children, to grow up healthy, do dangerous things? According to Gever Tulley, founder of Brightworks School and Tinkering School, two educational initiatives based on learning through experimentation, controlled risk can be a powerful educational tool. This educator firmly believes that education needs to free itself from parental over-protection. “We need brave boys and girls, who are prepared to confront the challenges of the world to come.” The message for fearful parents is clear: “Don’t let your fear be the only thing that interferes with your child’s autonomy.”
Our guest this week is Gever Tulley. Gever is founder of Tinkering School, an internationally famous summer camp where kids build amazing things from rollercoasters to wind-powered trains. He is also the founder of SF Brightworks, a K-12 school where the student is the co-author of their education, with an emphasis on learning by doing. He also co-author of 50 Dangerous Things (you should let your children do), a book to help children and families learn to assess and mitigate risk by doing dangerous things together (and is now available in seven languages). He speaks and hosts workshops internationally on education and the empowerment of children, and he is constantly fooling around in the shop, building things with kids For show notes visit: https://kk.org/cooltools/gever-tulley-founder-of-tinkering-school
Topic - Dangerism. We're getting to be a bunch of scaredy-cat parents. Parents have been arrested because their children played in the yard after dark and for letting them to walk to school alone. Parents now have a name, free-range parenting, for what we used to call “going out to play”. Good grief. Now, there's dangerism, a term coined by Gever Tulley, who created the Tinkering School, to point out the trend toward labeling common childhood behaviors as dangerous. He says that we're worrying about all the wrong things which make us fearful most of the time. Clearly, it's unhealthy. And, because of this, we're instilling fear in our kids and limiting their chances to explore and learn. We're not allowing them to develop coping skills, competence and to learn self-reliance and resilience. Common sense seems to be a thing of the past and we need to return to using sound judgment based on science, statistics and concrete evidence. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/drclaudia/message
We talk with Melissa Leopard, founder of Tinkering School Buffalo, about creating more opportunities for kids to play freely and without adult interference, how to change the culture of play in our homes and communities, and why we shouldn’t feel guilty if we don’t want to play with our kids all the time. Plus, we are in full holiday mode and Drew comes back strong from last week’s horrible dad joke. It’s easy to point a finger at over-protective parents, but don’t let yourself away with being over-protective of YOU. You’ll be missing all the fun. It’s so sad, right? Many kids don’t get to run free and play with sticks or climb dangerous jungle gyms anymore. But a lot of study has been done around how important it is for kids to explore and challenge themselves, even when it means they might get hurt. But as I always wonder, what about us adults? We need play in the same ways that children do – even play that could get a little dangerous. Some adults choose dangerous sporting activities to challenge themselves. We have an awesome sense of accomplishment when we push past a fear and climb that rock face or float down those rapids. But there’s a whole world beyond sport for those of us who want to challenge ourselves while having a little fun. That’s what this show is about.
