“Gap Control (In The Standings)” PIT@WSH 01/26/22 It's that time again: Sid versus Ovi, eighty-seven versus eight, Penguins versus the Capitals. It's ALWAYS exciting, isn't it? And these two teams seem to perennially compete for a playoff spot, destined to at least ‘brush past' one another en route to a playoff run. In the case of PIT against WSH, the ‘brush-by' in question is typically of the less-gentle variety, and tempers tend to flare. It's DeSmith in net tonight and, at least of late, that hasn't meant wonderful things for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Number one from Rochester, NH looks to steady his side-to-side rocking ship, to stop pucks, to Get A Win. Casey needs a clean W for himself and for his Penguins who, whether due to injury bugs, bad bounces, or off-ice misfortune, have for some time looked a long way off from the back-to-back champs they once were. Rather, the Pens have fairly remade themselves as the club who takes their sweet time establishing a collective identity - until pretty darned deep into each NHL campaign.Thank you for listening!! Richard Schiff won an Emmy for his performance as Toby Ziegler in the West Wing and currently plays Dr. Aaron Glassman in ABC's the Good Doctor. He has a recurring role on HBO's series Ballers as Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's boss along with countless other shows and films including Jurassic World, Heaven, Se7en. He starred on Broadway's Glengarry Glen Ross alongside Al Pacino and John Cusack and works as an advocate on the National Advisory Board of the Council for a Livable World which works to implement policies to reduce nuclear proliferation and armament. We talk about protecting the purity of the story and immersing everything into the character and craft, along with how almost dying because of COVID clarified what was truly important in life...Website:http://officialrichardschiff.comTwitter: Richard_SchiffInsta: @therichardschiffReview Outro

The West Wing’s Toby Ziegler, actor Richard Schiff joined Kieran Cuddihy to discuss his experience of contracting Covid 19. On November 3, Richard and his wife Sheila Kelley revealed that they had tested positive for the coronavirus. Schiff was hospitalized for the infectious disease less than two weeks after his diagnosis - and in the midst of the US Presidential Election.

The West Wing was an iconic ensemble television show that ran for 7 years on NBC from 1999 to 2006. It's also a personal favorite for Leah, Chris, Mike, and Nikki. Between the amazing cast, the razor sharp writing of Aaron Sorkin, or the modern day politics, the show has become a favorite of people all over the US.Over the next 2 episodes we are recasting the main cast from the first 4 seasons of The West Wing. This episode we are sitting down to recast President Josiah Bartletts, Leo McGarry, CJ Cregg, and Charlie Young. In 2 weeks we will release episode 2 of the show where we recast Sam Seaborn, Josh Lyman, Donna Moss, and the irritable Toby Ziegler. These are 2 of my FAVORITE episodes we've ever recorded because the casting directors are all really passionate fans of the show and have their own unique visions for the cast.Enjoying Recast That? In this episode, Thabiti and Nick provide an overview of an age-old question of politics: what is the role of government? We trace the development of our modern ideas about this to the 18th-century Enlightenment - noting that while it wasn't a Christian phenomenon, Enlightenment thinkers had an uneasy alliance with the church that papered over some of the fault lines we're beginning to see emerge today. We talk about different reasons for government to be bigger or smaller, but note that this specific question is beside the point. The real question is: is government doing what it should do? Biblical references: Genesis 9:5 - God's words to Noah after the flood, establishing that government is ordained by God as a coercive force, with the power of the sword. Romans 13:1 - the governing authorities - all of them - have been established by God. And, with a few limited exceptions, we are to submit to them. Genesis 41:46-57 - Joseph, in his service to Pharaoh, is just one example of a God-ordained role of government (in this case, a very statist, interventionist one!). Isaiah 1:16-17 - God's commands to Judah set the tone for what a people and its government should do: seek justice, correct oppression, plead the widow's cause. Proverbs 31:1-9 - God's commands to King Lemuel are a further manual for what it means to govern wisely. 1 Timothy 2:1-2 - we should pray for our leaders in government - all of them! Other references: The West Wing, Season 1, Episode 12: Toby Ziegler on whether "The Era of Big Government is Over" Adam Smith, The Wealth of Nations: "It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest." Self-interest is the engine of capitalism; we shouldn't be surprised when it sometimes produces bad results. Max Weber's much more strident take on Genesis 9:5 - that the state has a monopoly on the use of force. Produced by Ben Brophy. The gals are happy to welcome to the show Emmy Award-winning actor Richard Schiff! (“The West Wing,” ABC’s “The Good Doctor”) It is only fitting considering how often Jesi and Lauren reference Toby Ziegler and “The West Wing” on the pod! Richard appeared in Season 6, Episode 21, “Anything by Cured” written by friend of the pod Russ Woody (as well as appeared on another Diane English show “Love & War”). Topics include: Richard’s origin story, acting as a process, platonic friendships on TV ( i.e. CJ/Toby), and working with Allison Janney, Plus, our hosts ask Richard a “West Wing” question they’ve been waiting years to ask, will he answer it? On this episode, I had two different conversations at the Nutmeg Curling Club: one during the Yale SuperSpiel, a college curling tournament, and another during a small Super Bowl party we had after a college curling practice. We talk about the emerging sport of Crokicurl, why you can't trust a Totino's Pizza Roll to skip your team, and whether or not a British accent is necessary to curl for England. And perhaps the most important question of all: are you on #TeamSub or #TeamSpare? SHOW NOTES Here's some proof that Crokicurl really exists! If you're interested in following along with the USA College Curling season, check out their website. You can indeed find the SNL Totino's sketch on YouTube... ...As well as Melissa McCarthy's depiction of White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer. By the way, did you know that he's also the Communications Director? That's like being Toby Ziegler and C.J. Cregg at the same time! Here's an example of one Provincial that only had two teams because of the cost of travel.
In August 2016, Andrea had the opportunity to sit down with Richard Schiff in Los Angeles to hear his thoughts on Aaron Sorkin's Masterclass, Toby + CJ's relationship (including for whom the flashback pool scene was originally written), his feelings on "the leak" storyline, and much more. Thank you @Richard_Schiff for such a revelatory & thoughtful interview. **Be advised, this does contain major spoilers!**

At The West Wing reunion at the ATX Festival in Austin, TX, Andrea & Sallie were delighted to sit down with Richard Schiff. Listen in as they discuss his approach to acting, which moments were pivotal to the formation of the character of "Toby," and how he gambled his way to Los Angeles. Other highlights include an appearance from Denis Leary, Toby's infamous pink Spaulding ball, the search for a long lost scene partner, and his thoughts on his new role playing a Trump-like character. Enjoy this conversation with @Richard_Schiff.
