Katie and Bridget drop off their dead babysitter at a random cemetery as they re-watch the movie: Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead! It's a story all about a loving family of 5 siblings who have to make it on their own for an entire summer... I mean technically that's true but the "loving" part is certainly debatable! Come along as we meet Sue Ellen (aka Swell!??!?!?), the oldest of the 5 siblings who becomes head of the house after their summer babysitter literally dies only 2 hours into babysitting. She loses a pizza box bet to her brother Kenny and has to go off and get a job. Luckily, her forged resume isn't questioned at all by Rose - the senior executive at this "bowels of the fashion industry" company (her words not ours!). Sue Ellen learns what it's like to be an adult all while committing multiple felonies along the way. Will the kids be able to survive the summer without getting arrested, dying of starvation, or falling off the roof? Well one kid falls off the roof, but the rest they survive! Released in 1991, it stars Christina Applegate, Joanna Cassidy, Josh Charles, and a severely underutilized David Duchovny.
En este episodio conversamos sobre la película del año 1989, “Dead Poets Society” del director Peter Weir, protagonizada por Robin Williams, Robert Sean Leonard e Ethan Hawke.

Book Vs. Movie: HairsprayThe 1988 John Waters Movie Vs. the 2007 Adaptation“Musicals in March”The Margos continue their look at “Musicals in March” with the John Waters classic Hairspray, which started with the 1988 movie starring Rikki Lake, Divine, and Debby Harry. Based on his experiences of being a fan of the 1957-1964 Baltimore teen dance TV program--The Buddy Deane Show, Waters was a huge fan of R&B music. On the Buddy Deane show, the dancers were integrated, unlike Dick Clark's American Bandstand, which was based out of Philadelphia at the same time. Baltimore Magazine April 1985 by John Waters "Ladies & Gentleman: The Nicest Kids in Town!”Being a self-described “Super Fan” of the show, the director has a well-known career as an avant-garde-loving and bizarre artist who loves things that are in bad taste. His interest in something as wholesome as Buddy Deane made him think about writing a more accessible film about a group of teen dancers/local TV stars who fight racism and oppression with their love of music and dance. Given a modest budget of $2.8 million, the film was a box office hit, and the critics loved this new era of John Waters with even bigger hits in the 90s Cry-Baby & Serial Mom. Waters continues to write and direct his work and is very popular as an actor who appears in everything from Law & Order to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisles. In 2002, the musical version premiered in Seattle with music and lyrics from Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and the book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan. Hit is not a big enough word for this adaptation's success in the 2000s. It won eight Tony Awards (including Best Musical) in 2003 and broke all box office records in London's West End in 2008. We're revisiting a childhood staple through the fresh eyes of an adult this week as Colin introduces Nick to “Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead”! And more importantly to Rose Lindsey, brought to exquisite life by Joanna Cassidy in that red wig and that massive jar of candy that we discuss at length this episode. Plus Jayne Brook's iconic villainess Carolyn, Kimmy Robertson as Best Supporting Cathy, baby faced Josh Charles teaching us what a grunion run is, John Getz as the white wine spritzing Gus, a slicked back Bruce, not the little brother from “Poltergeist,” the suitcase-less mother who supposed to be 37, a real Uta type playing the babysitter and the incredible moment when Sue Ellen channels her inner Angela Bassett and does the thing. Actor and Baltimore native Josh Charles joins former MLB All-Star Adam Jones to relive his favorite Baltimore sports moments with the person he calls his “favorite Oriole.” Charles also shares how he got involved with HBO's “We Own This City,” how a cookie ended up on the Lombardi Trophy, how baseball became his first love and his favorite Baltimore Colts cards. Jerry Coleman and Jones debate what's next for Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson and if the Orioles are spending too much on prospects.

Acclaimed screenwriter and novelist Stephen Molton has amassed a lauded portfolio of impactful credits in several media. After breaking into television through writing screenplays for the Paul Newman-produced PBS's Children's Television Workshop, Stephen wrote his first novel, Brave Talk, which was published by Harper & Row in 1987 and provided a riveting, multi-angled introspective portrait of life in the Navy. He served as a creative executive for HBO, Showtime and MTV in the years which followed, while writing his second novel, and co-directed and produced L.A. Homefront: The Fires Within, a Showtime documentary about the Los Angeles Riots, in 1994. Other features he authored for Showtime include SmarTalk and The Accident; the adaptive mini-series, Live By the Sword (Gus Russo) and Weaveworld (Clive Barker). With the former, Stephen co-authored Brothers in Arms: The Kennedys, the Castros and the Politics of Murder, endorsed for Pulitzer Prize consideration by the book's publisher and winner of the New York Book Festival's prize for history in 2009. Films Stephen has written include Deep Blue (Stealth) for New Line Cinema (based on Brave Talk); The Road to East Jesus; and The Drowning for Netflix in 2017 (Josh Charles; Julia Stiles; Leo Fitzpatrick), a Bette Gordon directed adaptation of the book Border Crossing, which he also executive produced. Stephen is an adjunct assistant professor of screen-writing at Columbia University and an instructor at the Jacob Krueger Studio in New York; he attended University of Chicago, MIT and Oberlin College. In our conversation, we discussed his unique upbringing as the son of a progressive Baptist minister; the Navy infrastructure which laid the backdrop for his first novel; Generation 9/11, his documentary, and Elvis Meets Nixon, which he was involved with as an executive for Showtime and inspired Elvis & Nixon (Kevin Spacey; Michael Shannon; Evan Peters); rock and roll and folk music; and the differentiability between the east coast and the midwest.Opening Credits: 1st Contact - On the other Side; Closing Credits: 1st Contact - Beware of the Cow

Actor and filmmaker Jude Klassen, whose new film Stupid for You -- about a teenager who decides to reunite her mother's old punk band to impress a girl -- hits VOD today, is here to celebrate John Waters' 1988 breakthrough Hairspray, the movie about Ricki Lake and Divine accidentally enabling a civil-rights revolution in 1962 Baltimore ... and pissing off Sonny Bono and Debbie Harry in the process. It's a movie about teenage exuberance in the face of grown-up confusion, and also about seeing what Josh Charles looked like as a kid. Your genial host Norm Wilner is just happy for the chance to do The Roach.

“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” – Galatians 5:1“Juneteenth is a celebration of Freedom. Anytime we have an opportunity to celebrate Freedom is an opportunity to celebrate Jesus because that is who he is and that is what he does—Jesus breaks chains.” – Whitney Sullivan, member at Newspring since 2013This week, we are joined by Hykeng Paul, Josh Charles, Jayla Jones, and Whitney Sullivan to discuss the importance of celebrating Juneteenth both as citizens of the United States as well as citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven. Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the liberation of African Americans from chattel slavery in the United States. June 19th marks the day in which Major General Gordon Granger led Union troops to Galveston, Texas where the last slaves stepped into freedom nearly 2 ½ years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed into law. For many, Juneteenth can seem to be a holiday just for the African American community. In reality, it is a celebration for all people. Why should we as Christians celebrate Juneteenth? How can people who are not black celebrate the holiday? Join us as this week as we discuss the history, the importance, and the spiritual impact of Juneteenth.Follow us on Instagram @NewspringRally for more information about our ministry and how to get connected!
