We're back with Joe McGlynn from Man Must Die (as well as In the Lap of the Pods Queen Podcast and Shit You May Not Have Seen Podcast) for part two of our two-parter on “Heartwork” by Carcass. As Carcass plough their way across the UK this week on what seems like a fairly extensive tour, we pick up where we left off last week as Joe opens by telling us his story about the band, before we dive headlong into their two latest releases. There was a lot of noise made around their return in 2007, but at the time the band said that no new music was on the horizon. It took them a good five years to backtrack on that decision though, and in 2013 they unleashed “Surgical Steel” on the world. It's an album which very much sounds like the band that did the album “Heartwork”. Indeed, no sonic trace of “Swansong” could be found, which pleased a lot of fans, including our very own Joe here. A going concern once again, they've since fallen back into the cycle of performing and writing music. 2021's “Torn Arteries” was met with reasonable acclaim in the press, landing on many end of year lists. Which brings us to the present day, and part two of today's episode. It may seem odd to some for Joe to have picked why “Heartwork” is an unsung classic, but this week we dive into the album and give it a thorough going over before deciding if it does indeed deserve to be called “unsung”.

Then we delve into an obscure UFO event in The Soviet Union from 1989, The Vorohnez Encounter. Did a group of kids really come in contact with robot beings from another solar system/galaxy/dimension? Or was it all just a well-crafted lie to get attention? Could so many people really collaborate to lie about this, and stick to their story to this day? And if so, to what end? Listen to find out what the Scatterbrains think. And then finally, another installment of "My Best Friend Satan" to end the episode with style. You're welcome.

Few bands in metal are as unrelenting and uncompromising as Carcass. For over 30 years the band have been decimating minds, souls and eardrums with their ferocious brand of death metal, carving their names forever more into the annals of heavy metal music. After a prolongued absence, Carcass released their first single in over five years, Under The Scalpel Blade, in 2019 which led to a four track EP titled Despicable the following year but fans were still left lamenting the absence of a full length album to transport them to the bowels of hell since Surgical Steel in 2013.With the impending release of Carcass' first full length album in eight years, Torn Arteries, looming large drummer Daniel Wilding joined HEAVY to talk about the new album and its musical mysteries within."Yeah thanks man. It's been a little while hasn't it,” he laughed before turning his attention to Torn Arteries which will be released on September 17. "Surgical Steel eight years ago was kind of a statement for Bill and Geoff. They wanted to show people that the band wasn't dead and come back hard and fast and heavy and extreme as they could go really. I think with Torn Arteries Bill's idea of it was if we're gonna do another album we'd better do something that we've never done before. We don't wanna retread old ground. We don't wanna do another Surgical Steel. The thought process behind it was... there's always gonna be thrashing beats and there's always gonna be blast beats, because that's Carcass, but to try and fit in as much stuff that hasn't been done before as a band as possible. That was the initial idea for the album and what ended up being the bit that was the hardest to pull off; to try and do stuff that was different but still sounds like Carcass. There's a lot of unique stuff on there that I don't think a lot of people have heard from the band before. I'm unbelievably proud of it. It's crazy to think people are finally hearing it after... we've been sat on it for over two years (laughs)."In the full interview Daniel talks more about the songs on Torn Arteries, how they sound new while still maintaining the carcass stamp, connecting musically with their first album Reek Of Putrefaction, the singles released and how they represent the rest of the album, not being able to road test new music before recording it, the lyrical treasure map for fans in the album sleeve and more.
