Today we are sharing an episode from a brand new podcast launched on the RQ Network, Burned by a Paper Sun.Burned by a Paper Sun is a brand new, chilling, horror anthology podcast from the same brilliant creators of The Gentleman From Hell, Maeltopia and The Sleep Wake Cycle. In Burned by a Paper Sun, shadows come in a thousand shapes—some drawn long beneath a dying sky, others drifting and lost beneath a wandering cloud. Yet one certainty has always remained: every shadow must have a caster. But what if that isn't true? What if darkness could stand on its own? In this first episode William is a rational man, but even rational men are left broken by the Great Darkness of 1999. Despite his sceptical outlook, he is haunted by dreams of the most horrible and macabre variety. Most of all, he is terrorised by a single harrowing figure - the Elevator Man.Introduction and outro by Billie HindleYou can listen to the next episode of Burned by a Paper Sun by clicking on this link, or by searching for Burned by a Paper Sun wherever you find podcasts, or on the Rusty Quill website--Cast:Written by Mark AnzaloneEdited by Walker KornfeldSound mastering by Steven J. 3I Atlas, Human Remains on Mars, and Moon Formation InsightsIn this thought-provoking episode of Space Nuts, hosts Andrew Dunkley and Professor Jonti Horner dive into some controversial and intriguing topics in the realm of space exploration. From the latest on Comet 3I Atlas and the implications of the U.S. government shutdown to the divisive plan to send human remains to Mars, this episode is packed with cosmic curiosities and critical discussions that challenge our understanding of space and humanity's role within it.Episode Highlights:- The 3I Atlas Dilemma: Andrew and Jonti take a closer look at the ongoing situation surrounding Comet 3I Atlas, which recently passed Mars. They discuss why NASA has been silent on the data and the fallout from the U.S. government shutdown that has left many NASA employees unable to work or communicate about ongoing missions.- Human Remains on Mars: The hosts delve into the controversial proposal by the company Celestis to send human ashes to Mars. They discuss the cultural implications and sensitivities surrounding this idea, questioning the ethical considerations of sending human remains to another planet without broader consultation.- New Evidence of Moon Formation: A fascinating discovery in Western Australia sheds light on the formation of the Moon, with findings indicating that feldspar crystals found in ancient rocks on Earth closely match those on the lunar surface. This Halloween, jump into the eerie tale of Elmer McCurdy—a true crime deep dive into urban legends and America's carnival underbelly. In 1976, a seemingly innocuous Halloween haunt took a terrifying turn when a “mannequin” on a Long Beach dark ride wasn't a prop—it was a real human corpse. In 1976, a TV crew at The Pike's Laff in the Dark discovered human bone after a stunt arm snapped. Forensics exposed arsenic embalming, a copper bullet jacket, and a 1924 penny with old carnival tickets—breadcrumbs that led to Elmer McCurdy, a bungling Oklahoma train robber killed in 1911. For more than six decades, his body was bought, sold, and exhibited in sideshows and roadside museums, then misfiled as a prop and hung on a ride—until investigators finally confirmed the truth and laid him to rest under concrete in Guthrie (1977).This is a true-crime deep dive into America's carnival underbelly, the commodification of death, and how an outlaw became the Funhouse Mummy.Inside this episode:The 1976 discovery at The Pike: the moment the “dummy” bled clues—arsenic, bullet jacket, 1924 penny, tickets.McCurdy's final heist (1911): the botched robbery, the posse's shot, and an undertaker who wouldn't release the body. The carnival con: how promoters “claimed” the corpse and rebranded it coast-to-coast for decades.Forensic ID & burial (1977): the paper trail that ended with concrete sealing a grave in Guthrie, Oklahoma.Ethics & aftermath: why outlaw mummies vanished—and what the case says about spectacle vs. dignity. If you're searching funhouse mummy, Elmer McCurdy, Long Beach funhouse corpse, The Pike Laff in the Dark, outlaw mummy Oklahoma, arsenic embalming, sideshow history, or a true crime podcast about real “haunted” carnivals, this episode is your map. Follow and share for spooky-season specials all October. We're telling that story tonight.

The All Local Afternoon Update, Tuesday September 23 2025
A medical museum in Philadelphia has redrawn its policies on the collection and display of human remains, limiting its acceptance of additional specimens and working to follow “evolving modern medical ethical standards” in how it handles the 6,500 organs, bones and other body parts in its collection. The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, which owns the Mütter Museum, announced it is restricting the taking of photos and videos of human remains, allowing it only with the museum's permission. Photography by the public will remain prohibited. The museum “will allow photography as long as it sort of serves an educational purpose,” said Sara Ray, its director of interpretation and engagement. “But education itself is a pretty broad net that we're working through.” The great majority of the remains were collected from about 1840 to about 1940, mostly from Philadelphia, largely body parts and organs that were considered to be helpful in medical education and taken during autopsies or surgery. Such collections were not uncommon among medical societies at a time when specimens were critical to understanding how the body is structured and how it works. But most of those museums are long gone. The Mütter Museum said it is also working to “de-anonymize” its collection by looking into the personal histories of its human remains to figure out who they are, if possible, and to “do justice” in how it displays them and tells their stories. The goal is to exhibit them in the context of the history of medicine, bodily diversity and the tools and therapies used to treat them. “The goal is not finding an identity for finding an identity's sake,” Ray said. “The goal is to find an identity so that we can build a richer biographical profile, through which we can then ask questions about the way that this person navigated the world. And so that's going to look very different for every single specimen.” This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Some podcasts talk about love. Some talk about horror. THE BLIND RAGE PODCAST talks about both. This week, we take a look at LOVE AND HUMAN REMAINS (1993), a darkly introspective film that explores sex, loneliness, and the search for meaning in an increasingly disconnected world. Thomas Gibson leads the cast as David, a former TV actor turned waiter, navigating life alongside his best friend Candy (Ruth Marshall), who longs for something more. As their paths intertwine with those around them—including a mysterious and dangerous presence in the city—the film unfolds with an eerie sense of dread. Blurring the line between drama and thriller, this Canadian production doesn't just ask hard questions; it forces you to sit with the answers. We break it all down on THE BLIND RAGE PODCAST, where we tackle the unsettling, the unspoken, and the unforgettable.

The Art Newspaper's digital editor Alexander Morrison is in Basel for the annual Art Basel fair. He talks to our art market editor, Kabir Jhala, about the atmosphere at the fair after a long downturn in the art market and underwhelming auctions last month in New York. While some major museums around the world would rather avoid the topic of returning objects acquired in the colonial period to their countries of origin, The Wereldmuseum in Amsterdam is attempting to get on the front foot, with an exhibition called Unfinished past: return, keep, or...? During his lifetime, the late artist Frank Auerbach never had an exhibition in Berlin, the city of his birth, which he left for the UK in 1939 to escape the Nazis. This weekend, the first show of his work in the German capital opens at the Galerie Michael Werner. Our digital editor, Alexander Morrison, went to Berlin to talk to the artist's son, the filmmaker Jake Auerbach, about the exhibition. A new book by Dan Hicks, a curator at the Pitts River Museum in Oxford, UK, titled Every Monument Must Fall explores the origins of the fierce contemporary debates around colonialism, art, and heritage. It investigates in particular the acquisition of human remains and their ongoing place in museums and other historical institutions. Ben Luke spoke to him about the publication.
