Interview by Angela CroudaceRivers of Nihil's self-titled album marks more than just another release in their discography—it signals a rebirth. Bassist and vocalist Adam Biggs, one of the band's founding members, sat down to talk about the evolution of the group, the challenges of stepping into a new vocal role, and crafting an album that captures both urgency and introspection.Following their conceptual four-album seasonal cycle, the band viewed Rivers of Nihil as a way to define who they are now. “It almost feels like our first record again,” Biggs explains. “We looked back at all the eras of the band and pulled what worked best. This is Rivers of Nihil as it stands now.”A major shift came with Biggs taking on full-time vocal duties after the departure of their previous frontman. It's been a challenging transition. “It took a lot of practice and trial and error with my voice,” he admits. Balancing demanding vocals with intricate bass lines required intense focus and routine—but now, he says, “it's starting to feel more natural.”New blood also brought fresh energy. Guitarist and vocalist Andy Thomas officially joined the line up, contributing not just riffs, but his distinct voice. “I wanted to rise to the challenge,” Biggs says. “I wanted him to do awesome work with us.”The new album is both heavy and hauntingly relevant. “The theme is sort of this macro danger of modern life,” Biggs explains. “Fear of war, pandemics, political unrest. But we try to approach it from a human perspective—there's paranoia, yes, but also a thread of hope.”Instrumentation expands too, with banjo, cello, and a new saxophonist adding depth. But unlike previous records, the band prioritised how the songs would hit live. “We wanted this to go over in a room full of excited, sweaty people,” Biggs laughs. At its heart, Rivers of Nihil is an album born of evolution, resilience, and reflection—a fitting fresh start for a band that refuses to stand still.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersFresh from a run of Australian shows with Ne Obliviscaris and Rivers Of Nihil last September, German based post metal outfit The Ocean are set to return this June for their first headlining dates in this country in almost a decade. The band left an indellible impression on concert-goers when they were here late last year and have promised to up the ante even more for this tour which starts in Brisbane on June 5.Bringing their biggest production yet, as well as legendary US hardcore pioneers Cave In for their first Aussie shows EVER and insanely heavy Danish label mates LLNN, The Ocean will be showcasing last years ninth album Holocene, said to be the bands most exploratory and varied release yet.Guitarist Robin Staps sat down with HEAVY to reveal more."We're looking forward to being back," he began. "We were only over there last September but we're stoked to come back with a full headline set this time and to present you guys our new record Holecene, which we haven't been touring with so far. We just played one track on the last tour so there's goign to be a lot of songs we haven't really played live on your precious continent before and we're stoked to do that.""I'm in the middle of tour preparations right now," he continued. "Inevitably you start dealing with a tour more than a couple of weeks in advance. There's a lot of logistics involved. We're also doing South East Asian dates before we get to Australia and just the whole luggage and merch shipping and transport situation is extremely complicated. So unfortunately right now it's quite mundane logistics stuff, but i'm very much looking forward to finally being over there and touring and playing shows. We love Australia, ity's always been great. This time I have a feeling we're actually going to be able to enjoy it (laughs). The last couple of times it was always super early morning flights so we just didn't sleep. I was like a zombie."In the full interview, Robin talks more about what to expect from The Ocean on the tour, how the shows will be different as headlining events, the extra production and what that means for the performance, what has changed with The Ocean siunce their last headline Aussie tour almost a decade ago, bringing Cave In over for the first time and how that band helped shaped The Ocean's sound, how Holocene was received by fans, the slightly different sound of that album and why they went in that direction, fitting songs with different structures into a set list and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Welcome back metal heads to another episode of The Great Metal Debate podcast. It's Xander back with a brand new album review. Today, we will be looking at The Enduring Spirit by Canadian death metallers Tomb Mold. I was first introduced to Tomb Mold a few years ago when someone on my Facebook told me to check out their 2018 album Manor of Infinite Forms. I remember enjoying their brand of death metal but at the same time, I never became a huge fan. This new album however might change that for me. I have a friend in the UK who told me the other day that Tomb Mold was releasing a new album so I decided to give it a listen. Needless to say, this band has definitely improved upon their sound. There's obviously a lot more technical and groovy parts in the riffs instead of the dirty and grimey sound I'm used to hearing from these guys. This time around, things seem to be a lot more polished with even some calm moments. A perfect example of this would be at the beginning of the track titled "Will of Whispers''. In fact it reminded me a lot of Rivers Of Nihil's Where Owls Know My Name just a little but then again, there were many other times throughout this record where I got Hooded Menace vibes; so much so that I even went back and listened to one of my favorite 2021 albums The Tritonus Bell. Tomb Mold is a band that has evolved since the previous album which was released right before COVID. This means that the band most likely had a lot of time during lockdown to really brainstorm and write a perfect new album that stands out among the rest in the discography. In my opinion I think this is the best material they have ever created. Derek Vella and Payson Power are both absolute riff machines and provide a gorgeous guitar solo on the track "Fate's Tangled Thread" and of course Kevin Sia rips on the bass. I love how the bass cuts through the music like a knife through warm butter and to make it even more impressive is that the guy is only rocking a 4 string! Usually death metal bands with the techier sound need at least a 5 or 6 string. I mean hell, the band Obscura has a bassist who shreds on an 8 string fretless bass. As I was watching the making of this album I saw that Kevin's 4 string is also fretless. That's awesome! Especially hearing the bassline in "Servants of Possibility". I'm going to be doing a review for the new Autopsy album next month and it got me thinking about how rare it is for the vocalist of a band to also be the drummer. It takes a certain set of skills to be able to pull of those slow cavernous growls while also blasting away at the drums and Max Klebanoff can do exactly that! On the album title closing track which has the full name "The Enduring Spirit of Calamity", the guitar riffs remind me a lot of the middle era of a band like Decrepit Birth. As a fan of that particular style of tech death I can appreciate that. Now the metal-archives doesn't label them as tech death but I feel like it's the direction that this band is going and I can't wait to see what they put out in the future. This album was a breath of fresh air and I can see myself listening to this one a few more times before the end of the year. I have nothing but positive things to say about this one. Let's give it a nice little 8.5 out of 10. It's amazing but at the same time not really my go-to genre yet it deserves some much needed attention and support. You can support Tomb Mold's music by buying their music from either their Bandcamp page or from their record label website 20buckspin.com. Tomb Mold is also available on all streaming platforms.
Interview by Kris PetersYou certainly can't accuse Melbourne rock/metal hybrid Ne Obliviscaris from doing things in shades. After four long years - their last Australian tour was in 2019 - Ne Obliviscaris has announced a run of four dates this September, bringing with them an international assortment of fellow metallers in The Ocean Collective and Rivers Of Nihil. The last time Rivers Of Nihil were out here was actually on that tour, when they made their debut Down Under and left a trail of sonic devastation in their wake.Despite the Exul tour, named after Ne Obliviscaris' recent album, being a homecoming of sorts for the hometown heroes, many punters are just as excited to see the return of Rivers Of Nihil - who are armed with their own new album The Work - with bassist/backing vocalist Adam Biggs joining HEAVY to discuss things more."It is how it is," he shrugged when asked if the run of four shows in five days would be draining. "We always just keep track of things and do the shows... it's the job (smiles). It will be an awesome five days I'm sure."We ask if he thinks Ne Obliviscaris will be hitting the stage with a point to prove after so long away."Hopefully," he laughed. "Hopefully they come out with some motivation and some will to kick some ass. I'm sure we will as well. It's been a little while for us too. I wanna see everybody really motivated on these shows to give the crowd the best of the best they can."In the full interview we discuss Rivers Of Nihil's first trip to Australia with Ne Obliviscaris and what they were like to tour with, playing with The Ocean Collective and what they are expecting, what to expect from Rivers Of Nihil live, the diversity of bands on the line-up and how important that is, their new album The Work and how much of that we are likely to be hearing, their most recent single The Sub Orbital Blues and if that is a stand alone single or part of the next album cycle, what's next for Rivers Of Nihil and more.
We discuss the Final Boss of crowd killing, hate5six kicking a lady who touched his camera, and the like police trying to cancel Rivers Of Nihil bassist. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dragthelake/message

Fans of progressive music can sometimes have trouble “getting into” newer bands in the genre. The reasoning is different for everyone, but it can sometimes be hard to give a band a chance when stacked against giants of the genre. Welcome to another week of alternative music news, reviews and opinions courtesy of us here at Riot Act. Steve and Remfry start, pretty much immediately, by excitedly reviewing the recent Biffy Clyro gig at the Forum in London, before delving into this weeks releases, discussing the news that U2 have released a rubbish song (much to Steve's disappointment but not shock), Porcupine Tree have reformed and that some Slipknot fans have set fire to a mosh pit… or something. We also pay tribute to legendary music writer Malcolm Dome, who we were very sad to learn passed away this week. RIP to the man who coined the term thrash metal and who has given both of us literally tens of thousands of words on some of our favourite music ever. We then catch up on some recent releases that we feel are worth talking about from a truly mixed bag; Limp Bizkit, The War On Drugs, Don Broco, Jonsi, JPEGMAFIA, Marissa Nadler, Teethgrynder, Rivers of Nihil, Tom VR and Can't Swim all have their latest albums discussed and dissected. There's a lot of chat about the saxophone too. Nice. This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy

With a decade of technical death metal under their belt, including several massive concept albums, the group has established a pocket in the metal community where they alone reside. Their fans are open to whatever wild ideas and experimentation the group wish to utilize, and they're patient with the creative process. It doesn't matter if the group takes one year to write a record or three. Rivers Of Nihil fans will wait because they know the final product will be great. Rivers Of Nihil will release their long-awaited new album, The Work, on September 24. The ambitious LP explores the necessary regimen behind progress. The album is about doing 'the work' of being an artist in a very literal sense. There is no finish line or mountain top for a group such as Rivers Of Nihil, and their sole mission is to continue excavating the depths of their creativity until they die or run out of ideas. It's an endless pursuit for a group that is nothing more than a constant work in progress, and they wouldn't want it any other way. On this episode of Inside Music, host James Shotwell visits Rivers Of Nihil during a recent tour stop in West Michigan. Bassist Adam Biggs opens up about doing 'The Work,' returning to the road, and how songwriting works within the band. Biggs shares insight into how Rivers Of Nihil approach concept record, as well as the lessons he's learned trying to promote a unique sound in a cluttered music market.

Later this month, progressive / technical death metallers Rivers of Nihil will drop their fourth full length, The Work (Metal Blade Records), and by all accounts this album will be a crowning achievement for them as well as their fans and fans of extreme metal in general. 2018's Where Owls Know My Name really blew the lid off for them and received mountains of praise, as it should have. The Work finds the band at an even higher creative peak and, somehow, heavier than ever. We're foaming at the mouth over it and before long, you will be too.Just ahead of the album's release, Buke had the chance to chat with vocalist Jake Dieffenbach about the album, creation of it, and how the pandemic actually helped them take their time with it. They also cover other jobs that Jake has had and some local (Pennsylvania) recommendations of must stops when in the area. Jake opens up about a hearing disability and how he's turned that into a positive, how he feels about expectations of new albums from a fan's perspective, upcoming touring plans, and he drops the album pick he feels is truly a showcase track for where they are right now. This is an excellent chat so dive in and enjoy!9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram
