Heavy Pod Is Heavy Cast! This week, we tackle some moral dilemmas, mainly regarding supporting artists who perhaps have an imperfect moral track record. On a completely unrelated note, we talk about Machine Head, Cyborg Octopus, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Sigh, Enslaved, Between The Buried And Me, Allegaeon, Mastodon, Botch, and Neurosis. This episode features reviews for some albums we missed in 2021 from Obscura, Every Time I Die & Between The Buried And Me. We also review the year's first two major releases from Wilderun & Infected Rain. Our new host, Luci, joins the show and shares her thoughts on metal.
This week Chelle shares a song by up and coming artist Josie Dunne. Enjoy "Good Boys" off of her 2018 album To Be The Little Fish. Then Jesse shares a new track from progressive metal titans Between The Buried And Me. Get ready for "The Future Is Behind Us" from the 2021 album Colors II. AND as a BONUS this week... In light of the sudden and tragic passing of multi-platinum recording artist Meat Loaf, our hosts wanted to take a few minutes to share the impact that Meat Loaf had on their lives, the influence he had on both the metal and pop genres, and the legacy he left as a musician, performer, and actor. Of course the tribute wouldn't be complete without sharing one of his most iconic songs; enjoy "I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)" - single edit (for time purposes). AND... One more quick note, normally this episode would be a Hate Episode, however, due to audio issues we had to scrap the entire episode we had recorded and do the next one we had recorded. We hope to eventually get back on track with doing them every 5th episode. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
David Stepanavicius of Atræ Bilis is no stranger to the podcast as he and Buke discussed Apexapien (20 Buck Spin) at length back in November and it was such an electric discussion that Buke reached back out to have David on again to discuss all things Best of 2021. The two catch up a bit since last time then launch into their biggest disappointments of 2021, their Honorable Mentions, and their collective Top 10. They also discuss Best of lists in general and how an artist / band views list season, how music usually finds David and how much labels play a part in it, whether Chris Barnes or memes are better, upcoming things for Atræ Bilis, and so much more. You'll definitely want to keep a pen and paper handy as they cover a ton of great albums, forty in total. No surprise here at all, this is an excellent discussion!Huge thanks to David for joining us once again and we're already looking forward to the next one!9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram
Kevin is on his own again… While 2020 was a rotten year, it did allow artists time off the road to focus on giving us a plethora of albums in the world of Rock n' Punk n' Metal in 2021. This year was “unpredictable” at best, and like we stated last year: Nothing gets us through hard times like music! Some of these groups and albums we've talked about before, but we thought it was worth the time to recognize all of the amazing recorded output of 2021!What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or grouping of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week we look back on another tumultuous year that had its ups and downs, but mostly ups for the world of rock n' punk n' metal (minus the touring). In celebration of the New Year, we wanted to find some nuggets of joy from the last 12-months. We hope everyone's families are safe, and that you are able to take some time to kick back and rock with us! Happy New Year everyone!Songs this week include:Minefield - “Lady Danger” from Minefield (2021)Helloween - “Indestructible” from Helloween (2021)The Bronx - “Participation Trophy” from The Bronx VI (2021)The Night Flight Orchestra - “How Long” from Aeromantic II (2021)Turnstile - “BLACKOUT” from GLOW ON (2021)Mary's Blood - “Hunger” from Mary's Blood (2021)We Are The Union - “Pasedena” from Ordinary World (2021)Creeper - “Midnight” from American Noir (2021)Haunt - “Beautiful Distraction” from Beautiful Distraction (2021)Jason Bieler & The Baron Von Bielski Orchestra - “Bring Out Your Dead” from Songs From The Apocalypse (2021)If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uIf you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/

Morgoth was a hungry band who wanted to be as heavy and brutal as they come in the early 90's death metal scene. But, they didn't do that for some reason. On this episode of Discography Discussion Dan, Joe, and Geoff dive into a band who strove to redefine what they were about to a mixed reception, and we try to figure out whether experimentation works for every band. Dustie Waring is a guitarist in American progressive metal band Between The Buried And Me. The North Carolina based band made a name for itself with its technical and groovy sound and their willingness to adapt and evolve with every album. The band recently released their tenth record 'Colors II', which serves as a follow-up to their acclaimed 2007 release 'Colors'. We spoke with Dusty about not repeating themselves, songs that are difficult to play, working on an album during the pandemic, being proud of what you create, art that is willing to take risks, and a lot more! The LGBT+ heavy metal podcast fondly recalls Mastodon's 'Bedazzled Fingernails', and why it spoke to our queer side in a brilliant way – even if it recalled some less happy things for one of our hosts.Defunct mathcore project Iwrestledabearonce are hauled out of metal's past, expressly for the purpose of explaining why their name becomes rather suggestive when viewed through the prism of gay slang.Plus this week's entries for the Hate Crew Gaybar jukebox are Primordial Arcana, the new album from atmospheric black metal masters Wolves In the Throne Room, and Colors II, the prog metal odyssey from Between The Buried And Me.So, as well as IWABO, HBFM visit HCGBs with WITTR and BTBAM. Clear as glittery soup.
2007's “Colors” helped elevate Between The Buried And Me into one of the most acclaimed and ambitious progressive metal bands of the past two decades. But does the North Carolinian quintet live up to their reputation with that album's sequel, “Colors II”? Find out what Matt and Zach think in Epic Footnote Productions' “2 Minutes to Review,” a podcast that's part album review and part competition. In each episode, both hosts are given two minutes each to review a newly released album or a classic record they're revisiting. Whoever gives the longest review in under two minutes wins. Between the Buried and Me have blazed their own path and done things their own way now for some twenty years and change. So with a pandemic raging and nothing much else to do, they decided to record the follow up to their 2007 opus Colors, lovingly titled Colors II (Sumerian Records). Whether you go the Wikipedia route and call it new wave polka grunge or the band's route and call it adult contemporary progressive death metal, it kind of all fits and this is why the band is so endeared by its fans or, on the flip side, at arm's length to outsiders. Either way you slice it, Colors II is epic, colorful, and wildly entertaining. Just ahead of the August 20 release date, Buke had the chance to chat with vocalist and keyboardist Tommy Rogers about the new album, how it came to be, and behind the scenes. They also take a look back on Colors as well as band history and Tommy's background in music, becoming a vocalist, and how he came to play the keyboard. Time is spent on how the band doesn't pre-plan going into a new album and just how much time and effort goes into getting everything just right and sounding good, length of albums and the band's position on folks that say their music is too hard to get into, Tommy's solo work, and a discussion on their upcoming tour called An Evening with Between the Buried and Me. This is an excellent chat so dig in and enjoy!9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram
The critically-acclaimed 2007 album “Colors” from progressive-metal giants Between The Buried And Me serves as a staple record and a stepping stone for many contemporary musicians. Fast forward 6 albums and a decade and a half later – we get “Colors II.” Bassist Dan Briggs joins IUF today to talk about this highly-anticipated record filled with everything you'd want as a BTBAM fan, and then some. As if the pressure wasn't already there to create a sequel to a fan favorite, their recent album “Automata I” has been nominated for a Grammy. Oh yeah, they got this for sure. Dan takes us through the twists and turns that brought this record to life, and plenty of influence and inspiration came from having the time to record an album during the pandemic. It's almost as if they were in a similar spot during the pre-production stages of “Colors” and “Colors II.” We ask Dan about those particular similarities and the themes that were chosen for the songs which paved the way for songwriting to reach different heights of creativity. And lastly, we talk about their starfish – YES, you read that correctly. BTBAM have a 67 million year prehistoric starfish named after them, thanks to a handful of scientists who happen to really appreciate the music the band has released throughout their decorated career. It's an origin story you don't want to miss. “Colors II” from Between The Buried And Me drops August 20 through Sumerian Records. This week: in an episode of purely new music discussions, Damon Albarn preps his second ever solo album, RZA unveils a new project
Even though metal isn't at the top of my list, "Colors" is one of the most interesting albums I've heard in a long time. Between The Buried And Me is a progressive metal band made up of virtuosos and friends, most of whom have been playing together since high school. Whether you're already a fan or just curious, my guest Job Fickett is amazingly helpful. He helps guide us through the world of modern prog metal, explains the different vocal styles, and shares all the reasons BTBAM is his favorite band.
We've left 1985 behind and blasted forward through time to 2007 where we've been watching Spiderman 3 while queuing up to get our savings out of our Northern Rock bank accounts. We've also been talking about whether KT Tunstall is really as bad as Tracey previously thought, If rollerboots are cool or not, and whether Trent Reznor is a witch. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Ian's wife Lydia, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them to Colin's wife Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. Helen also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Arcade Fire, Band Of Horses, Battles, Between The Buried And Me, Bloc Party, Bright Eyes, The Chariot, Clutch, Edwyn Collins, The Fall, Girls Aloud, Grinderman, PJ Harvey, Richard Hawley, King Creosote, Avril Lavigne, LCD Soundsystem, Malcolm Middleton, Minus The Bear, Thurston Moore, Neurosis, Nine Inch Nails, Porcupine Tree, Radiohead, Mark Ronson ft Daniel Merriweather, Kelly Rowland, 65daysofstatic, Stars, Strike The Colours & Patrick Wolf.Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2jENZ7wGCfLRONGaYYKgao?si=yQKPgmNHSiWBQeOHX1_JHQ The playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Lydia ClarkeRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Say hello at www.facebook.com/wedigmusicpcast or tweet us at http://twitter.com/wedigmusicpcast or look at shiny pictures on Instagram at http://instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast We're part of the We Made This podcast network. The piece of music we're listening to in the background is the main theme from the dystopian science fiction podcast windfall. Today, we'll break it down and get into why and how it was made. You're listening to How I Make Music, where audio drama composers get to tell their own stories. Every Wednesday, we break apart a song, soundtrack or composition and take a trip into how it was made. My name is Adam Raymonda. I'm a sound designer and composer from Syracuse, New York. And this is How I Make Music. ABOUT Welcome back to how I make music Episode 89 the windfall main theme, by me, Adam Raymonda. Thanks for listening in. Windfall is a large ensemble cast science fiction drama and it takes place on a planet called Proxima. It's this towering city where the wealthiest of the wealthy live on the top of the city and the poorest of the poor live on the ground. This city was built up to a castle that appeared in the sky on Proxima. The residents worship their god queen who was found in the castle. Her name is Wanda. She bears no resemblance to a certain leader that we have in the country I live in, the United States. 02:07 INFLUENCES I listened to a lot of prog rock throughout the years. A common thing in progressive rock or metal music is the use of odd time signatures, which probably influenced me in just as big a way as composers like John Williams or Ramin Djawadi. There's a piece from the band Between The Buried And Me called Famine Wolf. Take a listen to it. It has this natural sort of seven four '1234567' feeling to. That may have been an influence in the way that I put together this theme. 03:24 BREAKDOWN The Windfall main theme is played at the introduction of each episode. It features this Rhodes keyboard ascending line that is supposed to represent the sort of the upward motion of going up towards the top of the castle. There's a couple of the more melodic elements which help drive us through that rhythm. This version ends with some more organic elements and is sad but sort of triumphant at the same time. I added some guitars that have some pitch shifting on them one that has a higher octave above it and then one has a lower octave beneath it and they're kind of panned off to the sides. I kept most of the melody on the one of that five. It would help keep us grounded or more straight. Because 5/8 can sometimes be this like very almost like Balkan music. It's all downbeats. Just helps keep it driven and you know, sort of in time. I ended up adding some fake strings to it. That would help accentuate sort of the chord progression. And then I ended up adding in some organ. 06:18 CELLO My friend, Gabi ended up playing cello on the track. She came over to my studio that I had at the time that was my bedroom studio. And we just plugged in her cello in through direct input or a DI. It had an electric output but also was an acoustic cello. So we were able to capture both signals at the same time. So we got a lot of the lower droning notes that are in there that help make up the bassline. We had her double the melody as well. I'm so grateful that she did record that on there because it just sounds so much better than anything I could have programmed at that point. And to this day. 07:50 OTHER PARTS We very lightly put a glockenspiel in there to kind of bring something that would be like a higher timbre. It ends with these more organic elements, there's some acoustic guitar that comes in. A ukulele. The music fades out with the first scene happening over that. It also allows space for the scene to trickle in when we cut out a lot of these other elements. 09:02 OUTRO That's about it for this week's episode. We'll listen to the full track in just a moment. But before we do that, thank you for listening to How I Make Music. Catch new episodes every Wednesday on Spotify, Apple or wherever else. The queer look at heavy metal this week takes in both one of the 21st century's most forward thinking bands, and one of the greats of the classic era. One of Between The Buried And Me's most madcap odysseys gets the Camp Classic treatment, and we discuss what that has to do with one of the key composers of the great American songbook. We also look at how German greats Accept tried to look ultra metal, succeeded, but also ended up with some visuals that we couldn't possibly not misinterpret. Plus we've got the final round-up of our top albums of 2020, with deep dives into records from Ulcerate and Kassad. Also some entirely unavoidable double entendres.

Nick Johnston is part of a new wave of guitar virtuosos, renowned for his slick legato style and moving, soulful instrumental music. The Canadian already has five full-length albums to his name, and his latest release (2019's "Wide Eyes In The Dark") is considered his most accomplished yet. Not only has Nick established a large online presence over the years, but he can also be seen out on the road supporting the likes of Between The Buried And Me, The Contortionist and Polyphia. Guest spots on tracks from Periphery, Intervals and Scale The Summit bolster his impressive list of credentials, which continues to grow into 2020 and beyond. Back in 2015, Nick sat down with The Captain back to discuss his career and the early days as an up-and-coming musician aspiring for recognition. Other topics included Johnston's relationship with Schecter guitars and tips on how to get your parents to support you!
The gang is finally all back and in good health once again! We spent some time discussing what we missed while we were gone (i.e the Grammys, Oscars, etc) before diving into our picks this episodeAndrew - Try Again by Ovrkast.Aidan - Silver Tongue by TORRESJagan - Hot Pink by Doja CatClassic Pick (Jagan): Colors by Between the Buried and MeOther discussed topics, with links:Tyler the Creator's performance of "EARFQUAKE" and "NEW MAGIC WAND" for The Grammys. Ovrkast. doing production for "EL TORO COMBO MEAL"Doja Cat's track "Tia Tamera" with Rico Nasty being an absolute must listen.Loudwire's retrospective for Between the Buried and Me's Colors does an excellent job capturing the importance and context behind the album. CORRECTION: Aidan is also very wrong about thinking the same vocalist was on "Prequel to the Sequel" and "Swim to the Moon". "Prequel to the Sequel" has guest vocals from Adam Fisher of Fear Before the March of Flames, while "Swim to the Moon" has guest vocals from Chuck Johnson.
The Mosh Zone Episode #105. This week we chat with Danny of Between The Buried And Me about learning is musical craft, joining the band, their vast discography, having a 17 min song, the modern industry, genre tags, pushing musical boundaries, being a 20 year band and much more!!
My guest this week is Blake Richardson, drummer of Between The Buried And Me. Blake is without a doubt one of the best drummers doing it right now in progressive music. The band has massively evolved over time and so has Blake's drumming so we talk a lot about that as well as influences, practice routines etc but also about health and fitness. We also delve into the realm of perfect post-show food, and the time my dad spiked me with morphine at Christmas dinner.
Between The Buried And Me are returning to Australia for some very special intimate shows so HEAVY Mag sat down and chatted to them.
Hutch will inflict ear hole pain as he introduces Taylor to REAL metal! Music by Pantera, Between The Buried And Me, Sepultura; Wu-Tang Clan, System Of A Down, Arch Enemy. We do not own the rights to the music and don't claim to.
Be our guest, be our guest. Put our service to the test! We have a special guest this week and it is a fun one! Can’t miss this episode covering this really interesting concept album by Between the Buried and Me!

Episode 26 - My old friend Tommy from Between The Buried And Me reached out to come on the show! Even though he "hates interviews" he wanted to be a part of LSS. It turned out to be a great chat about his deep love for music, his move to California to start a family, having the longest band name ever, writing on the road, being a private person, and of course Victory Records. A great dude and a very interesting listen! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Y como recomendado a los norteamericanos Between The Buried And Me.

We know we say new episodes every week, but it's been a while since we took a week off, plus America's funnyman, and one of our heroes, Neil F'N Hamburger is doing a rare performance in the greater NY area, and we just had to go. So, we decided this will be the first Wednesday we do not do a podcast since moving to a new day. Hey, give us a break, alright? But don't worry, we compiled a mixtape of a bunch of special guest call-ins that have happened in recent weeks including phone calls from Jonny Davy of JOB FOR A COWBOY, Snake Sabolnick of A LIFE ONCE LOST, Ian Christe of Bazillion Points Books and SiriusXM Liquid Metal, Tim Lambesis of AS I LAY DYING/AUSTRIAN DEATH MACHINE, Greg Weeks of THE RED CHORD, Paul Waggoner of BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME and Travis Ryan of CATTLE DECAPITATION playing our gameshow Death or No Death. Also, Sid is bringing his Flip camera tonight so he can show you how much fun we're having not doing the Livecast. That clip should be up a little later in the week. Feel free to to post in the comments why you think we suck for not doing the show tonight. We will be back with a new live episode next week!
UPDATE: We have added this week's Behind the Scenes video after the jump We had two very special guests on this edition of the METAL INJECTION LIVECAST, Greg Weeks of THE RED CHORD & Paul Waggonner of BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME. Greg calls early on and starts some beef with Paul, which Paul responds to later in the show. Also, when Paul comes on the air, we have a hurricane of callers, our most call-ins ever, asking deep questions about his hair cut and Cheetos. In all fairness, some dudes ask some good questions about guitars and the band. Also, we talk about Dave Ellefson's new career reading people's resumes, Geek2Geek and more! We also have a few calls from the Googler, including something in the final minutes of the show that may have been too far! Here is this week's playlist, mostly picked by 3D: THE RED CHORD – The Ugliest Truth ANTHRAX feat. PUBLIC ENEMY – Bring The Noise SUICIDAL TENDENCIES – Trip At The Brain ENTOMBED – Left Hand Path BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME – Fossil Genera – A Feed From Cloud Mountain Plus the comedic stylings of Bill Hicks and Kumail Nanjiani Click more to watch the Behind the Scenes video…
