Balancing technique and groove, and the idea that overemphasis on technique might mask a lack of feel. Essential, budget-friendly gear they rely on. Personal experiences of re-evaluating their approach to the drum set. Common drumming advice they find questionable, such as rigid techniques or creative limitations imposed by producers. Interview by Angela CroudaceCollin Walsh from Grayscale sat down to chat about the band's long-awaited Australian debut, musical evolution, and behind-the-scenes moments that have shaped their career. With their first-ever tour Down Under just around the corner, Grayscale is eager to experience the country's culture and share their music with fans who've been waiting for years.Collin revealed, “We've never been to Australia before. It's a first for us. I've done long flights to places like Indonesia and South Africa, but travelling as a band is a whole different beast. We have 20 pieces of equipment, eight people, and always a few hiccups at the counter. It's slow and tricky, but we're thrilled for the opportunity.”The band's anticipation is also fuelled by their fans in Australia, who have been loyal and patient. “We've been trying to come for years, but the pandemic messed up our plans. Finally, we're here and can't wait to give our Aussie fans everything they've been waiting for,” said Collin. The band's latest album, The Heart, released earlier this year, marks a refined version of their sound. “It feels like a culmination of everything we've done before, but it's more cohesive. It's us finding our sound,” Collin shared. The album blends rock, punk, and alt influences, but Collin hints at future possibilities for Grayscale's sound, saying, “I can see us leaning into more straight-up rock in the future. We don't plan things ahead of time, but we let the music naturally evolve.”In terms of success, the band is more focused on the live experience than any individual track. Their hit Forever Yours, which recently surpassed 20 million streams, is a fan favourite, but Collin remains humble. “I don't think of success that way. I love playing the music live, interacting with fans—that's what it's all about.”When asked about their influences, Collin points to a mix of '90s alt rock and classic rock. “Third Eye Blind, Eve 6, Fuel, and Wallflowers were huge for me growing up. And of course, Zeppelin and AC/DC.”As for future collaborations, Collin's dream partner would be Led Zeppelin, his all-time favourite band. “I just want to pick their brains. They're the best rock band ever, in my opinion.”The band's longevity is also built on their strong friendship. Having known each other since their teenage years, they're still as close as ever. “We've been through a lot together, and we've stayed best friends since we were kids,”.Looking ahead, Collin is excited to keep creating and evolving. “We just want to keep making music that resonates, connecting with our fans through honest and emotional lyrics. And Australia, we're coming for you!”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Shlomo Franklin is an American singer/songwriter born on a small cow farm in upstate New York. Raised off the cultural grid, without music, television, or radio, his songs are strongly influenced by his cult-like religious upbringing. Shlomo released his debut album in 2019 which was produced by Grammy Award winner C Lanzbom and was followed by a double album from his now Nashville, TN home. Franklin has opened up for Jakob Dylan and The Wallflowers and shared festivals with The Nude Party and The Bones of JR Jones. His songs seem just as comfortable in front of a crowd of two thousand as they are in a living room house concert. Shlomo sees himself as a bare bones troubadour and is stubbornly trendless.

After a series of EPs, along with intensive self-booked tours, Brother Elsey's momentum has led to dates with acts like The Head and the Heart, Allen Stone, The Wallflowers, The War and Treaty and SUSTO. Their hard-earned grassroots growth has helped cultivate a loyal following and set them up to make the leap from beloved Detroit act to the national scene. In March, the group showcased at SXSW for the premiere of the IFC film Dandelion, which they are featured in and includes an original score by The National's Aaron Dessne. The band's self-titled debut album, (Out Now) via River House Artists was produced by Drew Long (KALEO, Judah & The Lion) and is an insightful coming-of-age portrait, capturing the mystery, euphoria and struggle of modern young adulthood. Marie Miller is a folk/pop singer-songwriter and multi-faceted artist and speaker who weaves together music, humor, and storytelling to convey God's love for us.  She stopped by the show to talk with Father Dave about her new EP, “The Way of Love.”   Marie began making music as a teenager, and has enjoyed an almost-20-year career of radio, recording, and performing success, including opening up for The Backstreet Boys and the Wallflowers. She's excited to be releasing her first Catholic album in a long time. “My heart just kept getting closer to Jesus,” Marie explains. “I want to talk about Jesus and who I love and what I love — the Lord, St. Thérèse of Lisieux — so the writing came very natural.” RELATED: St. Thérèse of Lisieux: Inspiring Us to Share Our Faith Stories Father Dave asks about the record being inspired by St. Thérèse of Lisieux.   “She's the patroness of this album; she's amazing“ Marie says. “The Way of Love,” which is the title track, is inspired by a quote of hers: ‘How sweet is the way of love.' St. Thérèse talks about how even in our brokenness, and even when we make mistakes, God uses even those mistakes to pave the way of love. So when I was considering creating a Catholic album, I thought I can't do this. Catholic artists and speakers — they're all super holy and perfect. How am I gonna do this? And reading that quote, to me was like, hey, even in your brokenness, God will use it; he will use everything he can on the way of love — and so she became the patroness and inspiration for this record.”  Father Dave and Marie look back at some of the highlights of her career, including sharing a stage with Andrea Boccelli and in front of Pope Francis. “That was so special. I've been blessed to get to do some really cool things, but you know, you hunger for more. So you compare yourself to other artists and think, ‘Wait, why did she get that tour?' Right? But St. Thérèse of Lisieux, she wasn't trying to be the star. She was trying to make Jesus the star. And I love that and that's why I'm trying to follow in her footsteps.”  LISTEN: Andrea Bocelli on the Faith Influence Behind His Music Father Dave asks if it is more challenging to have a humble connection with God when you get more accolades and fame. “I wonder. Jesus has not made me very famous,” Marie laughs.   Father Dave points out that although Marie is not “very famous,” there is an intentionality to that — that fame is not necessarily her life's desire or goal. Marie says that while she occasionally has thoughts about greater success, “God knows who needs to hear my music and there's kind of a freedom in that, because if you give your music to God and you work as hard as you can, he knows where it needs to go. It's not just about me all the time.”

The journey of "No Reply" is a curious one. A song John seemed to not think much of, and originally offered to another Brian Epstein-managed artist, it was possibly slated to be the final song recorded for A Hard Day's Night. If not for Ringo's tonsillitis, who knows what would've happened with it. After spending some time with it though, and working it into a bit more interesting arrangement, it turned out to be the lead off track to the band's 4th album, and a real signpost to where the band was headed. More introspective than what had come before it, and a much less energetic album opener than Beatles fans were expecting, No Reply is a real sneaky song. It's filled with great melody and harmony, possibly one of the best bridges the band ever recorded, and it's all done very economically. Not a second is wasted on this song. It shows a real growth that the band is starting to go through, with John painting a brilliant scene throughout the song. It's a fantastic and unique way to start a Beatles record, and a song that doesn't get nearly enough love. Joining us this week is musician and journalist Jeff Slate. You may have read his articles in Rollling Stone, Billboard, or the New Yorker, or heard him as guest DJ on Sirius XM or KLOS. He's got a brand new record out, The Last Day of Summer with a laundry list of great players joining him. It's a fantastic pop rock album, we can't recommend it enough.
