Great to reconnect with Jeff Scott Soto. The last time I talked with him was mere weeks after we met, I believe in 2018. He's one of these guys who you just like the first time you meet him. He's so easy to talk to, which you'll see in this conversation. He's coming through town playing the Token Lounge on March 27th with The Art Of Anarchy band. He spoke about how he joined the band, which was somewhat defunct, with the help and through his friendship with Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal. The new album is out, and JSS told me that the band hasn't even played one of these songs live yet. He said rehearsals start next week, as I post this. JSS has been in many bands, but the Trans Siberian Orchestra is one he's been in for a long time. He talks about the reasons why he's jumped around to different bands throughout his career. One of the guys he plays with in TSO is Slaughter drummer, Blas Elias. Jeff talked of meeting him, and how they both have parts in the movie "Rockstar". We also talked about his 40 years in the music business! Yes, he started at the early age of 18 and was off and running with the Yngwie Malmsteen's "Rising Force" album. He said he didn't even know he got the gig until weeks later. He just did the Monsters Of Rock cruise, and along with playing many shows onboard, he did his first comedy routine. With the help of rock comedian Don Jamieson, he said it went very well. He talked about doing a similar thing with Jason Bieler from Saigon Kick. JSS said he's learned a lot from him. Jason also submitted a funny question for Jeff....LOL We talked about Queen, the documentary making "We Are The World", and more. Lots of great stories from Jeff, cannot wait to see him and Art Of Anarchy at the Token Lounge in a couple of weeks!

ART OF ANARCHY is one of those rare bands that doesn't play by rules, except for the ones they break. “Compromise" and "playing it safe" are terms that don't exist in the band's vocabulary, pulverizing raw talent is what this band has always relied on, along with artistic worlds of illusion and sound. The band has entered into a Renaissance rebirth with a darker and more sinister edge that will reinforce the "anarchy" in ART OF ANARCHY.Original founding members Jon Votta (guitar), Vince Votta (drums), and guitarist Ron 'Bumblefoot' Thal (former Guns N' Roses / Sons Of Apollo) welcome the talents of vocalist Jeff Scott Soto (former Yngwie Malmsteen / Sons Of Apollo) and bassist Tony Dickinson (SOTO / Trans-Siberian Orchestra) into this new formation. The band returns with their comeback album Let There Be Anarchy, which is a reflection of a modern society. With epic songs pushing the eight-minute mark, listeners will be taken to places that they may already be, are going to, or can only imagine. With the band's new lineup, the next chapter in AOA has just begun!Art of Anarchy also recently released their latest video, "Die Hard." "The message is clear," the band commented in a joint statement. "If we must die, then we will all 'Die Hard'!"The "Die Hard" video notably stars Charlie Gillespie as "The Prince of Anarchy." The Canadian actor and singer is best known for playing Luke Patterson in the Netflix series Julie and the Phantoms.

Always great to catch up with Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal. The dude is a beast on the guitar and a creative force! We talked about a project he did with Sons of Apollo bandmate, Derek Sherinian. He talked about playing with Queen's Brian May. "Such a wonderful guy, yeah." He went onto say "There's nothing not to love about that guy!" The reason for the conversation was about his band, The Art of Anarchy, and their upcoming third album. The new album drops next February, called Let There Be Anarchy. The story of how this latest album started is a crazy one. Bumble talked about the severe health challenges that faced guitarist Jon Votta, to the point where he was literally dying. That story is unreal! He told me that they have about two albums worth of music written. He also talks about recruiting Jeff Scott Soto to the band. Of course, he is in S.O.A. with JSS, so it was an easy transition. "We have years of working together." Ron said. He told me about the video for their first single, Vilified, which you can see below. Cube Gooding Jr. is in the video, along with Geoff Tate narrating (which is killer). He said that video has a real "Joker" vibe to it on purpose, including the band playing on the famous stairway from the movie. How did they get those two guys on the video? "We asked!" Easy enough. He went on to talk about what the rest of the album sounds like, including a track with a guitar solo from Alex Skolnick. As far as other things he's working on, he's got a solo album he'll be dropping. Plus, he's working with and producing a band called The Dodies. What's going on with Sons Of Apollo? He answered that. He also talked about his style of producing, and how he approaches the studio. During the pandemic, he mentioned that he would probably not tour anymore. Has he changed his mind on that? Always fun to talk with one of the true good dudes in this business, as well as one of the most talented guys I know. -Meltdown-

This week is our 21st installment of an ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. We bring you an in-depth exploration of another band that fits into our category of being an “in-betweener”: the amazingly awesome SAIGON KICK! This band straddled the world of the 80s hard n' heavy and the 90s alternative n' grunge. Like their touring buddies Extreme, they got a major hit with a ballad in the early 90s and got pigeonholed as a ballad band when they weren't that at all. We think this band should have been alongside Alice In Chains and STP… They Shoulda Been Huge!!! This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that we have featured on the show before and exist in a category that we discussed at length back in Episode 133 – The Inbetweeners. They're from Robert's home state of Florida, but will our Florida-Man agree with Kevin's assessment and status of “Shoulda Been Huge”??? Have a listen and find out for yourself. Songs this week include:Saigon Kick – “Coming Home” from Saigon Kick (1991)Saigon Kick – “Hostile Youth” from The Lizard (1992)Saigon Kick – “On And On” from Water (1993)Saigon Kick – “Eden” from Devil In The Details (1995)Saigon Kick - “Dizzy's Vine” from Moments From The Fringe (1997)Saigon Kick – “Solitary Jerk” from Bastards (1999)Super Transatlantic – “Shuttlecock” from Shuttlecock (2000)Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Jeff Scott Soto In 1985, Jeff Scott Soto was a 19-year-old newcomer making a name for himself as the singer of Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force. Since then, he's been widely hailed as one of rock's best vocalists as evidenced by stints in Journey, Trans-Siberian Orchestra and the supergroup Sons of Apollo, among others. On the eve of his latest album (Oct. 7), “Vacation in the Underworld,” under the banner Ellefson-Soto, he joins us for a conversation as wide-ranging as his career -- and, of course, we ask about his Steel Dragon vocals in the “Rock Star” movie and that time he joined forces with a couple of Misfits. My guest today is Mr. Joel Hoekstra. Joel is a fantastic guitarist who is holds down a number of high profile gigs, among them Whitesnake (of which he is a current member), Night Ranger , Cher, Trans- Siberian Orchestra, Rock of Ages and many others. As many musicians do Joel spent years paying his dues both in Chicago and later New York City where he worked gigs of all types including Broadway shows and even playing bass with the Turtles! Not just a sideman however Joel has many solo releases under his own name including the latest record called “Running Games” that features an all-star cast of musicians including Russell Allen (vocals), Tony Franklin (bass), Vinny Appice (drums), and Derek Sherinian (keyboards) as well as Jeff Scott Soto on background vocals. In this interview Joel takes us into what it takes to land these high profile gigs and how networking and hard work still pay off.LINKSCheck out “Running Games hereJoel's WebsiteJoel Hoekstra FacebookJoel's InstagramSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-riff-raff-with-shane-theriot/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
