Bonus Episode: Sean Hurley Breaks Down His Most Iconic Basslines Sean Hurley is a renowned bassist of both studio and stage, known for his dynamic playing and musicality among the top artists in Pop and Rock Music. He gained significant recognition as sideman for John Mayer, dating back to the Battle Studies tour (2010), and then continuing on as a session bassist, contributing to some Mayer's most popular hits on Born and Raised, Paradise Valley, and Sob Rock. Hurley also played a crucial role in Robin Thicke's break-out album (The Evolution of Robin Thicke), laying down smooth, groove-driven basslines that helped define Thicke's signature sound and R&B style. Additionally, Hurley toured and recorded with Vertical Horizon during their debut album, adding depth and precision to the band's alternative rock vibe, ultimately leading to several chart-topping hits. Here I'll sit down with Sean to talk about his extensive session career, his iconic bass playing, the gear uses to get his signature sound, and get him to re-create some of his most iconic tones for the biggest hits he played on.   SPONSORS Sweetwater Gear Exchange | Sweetwater's Used Gear Marketplace Sign up FREE with no seller fees when you put your earnings on a Sweetwater gift card https://sweetwater.com/used   Sean's Preferred Amplifier | Ampeg B15  Check out Ampeg's NEW pedal-format B15 & SVT all-in-one DI https://ampeg.com/products/pedals/sgt...   Sean's Preferred Strings | LaBella  La Bella 760FL (43-104) https://www.labella.com/product/760fl/ La Bella RX-N4D (45-65-85-105)  https://www.labella.com/product/rx-n4d/   Sean's Preferred Overdrive | EBS Valve Drive  https://ebssweden.com/content2/effect...   Sean's Preferred Tuner | Peterson StroboStomp  https://www.petersontuners.com/shop/p...   Sean's Preferred Cables | Asterope Pro Studio:  https://www.asterope.com/custom-shop/... Curtis Harding [16:08] "Freedom" Soul Power Burger Records BRGR600 2014 Debut outing from this Atlanta musician. Describing his sound as "slop 'n soul", this one track has a definite Arthur Lee feel. Lou Rawls [18:49] "A Whole Lotta Woman" Soulin' Capitol Records T 2566 1966 Not a whole lotta love, not a whole lotta Rosie, but a whole lotta woman. John Coltrane with Red Garland [21:27] "Theme for Ernie" Soultrane Prestige 7142 1958 One of Coltrane's showcases for his distinctive sheets of sound style. Les and Larry Elgart and their Orchestra [26:24] "You're My Thrill" Sound Ideas Columbia CL 1123 1958 Hailing from Pompton, New Jersey, these brothers developed their "Elgart Sound" in 1952 and released over half a dozen albums before parting after this album to pursue their musical interests. Mary Martin et al [30:02] "The Lonely Goatherd" The Sound of Music (Original Broadway Cast) Columbia Masterworks KOL 5450 1959 Now that's what I call yodeling! Pre-Julie Andrews obviously. Mary Martin was perhaps best known as playing the title role in the Broadway production of Peter Pan. Not sure how I knew this, but maybe it was due to living in New York for 20 years naking Broadway trivia inescapable. The Sinceros [33:23] "Take Me to Your Leader" The Sound of Sunbathing Epic EPC 83632 1979 The sticker on the cover says that this track is their featured single, so that's what I'm going with. Power pop-y new wave-y. Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass [37:10] "Casino Royale" Sounds Like... Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass A&M LP124 1967 You know I love a good shaggy dog of a film, and Casino Royale is definitely that. Well, the Daniel Craig version is too, but I'm talking about the 1967 comedy version with David Niven as Sir James Bond. Ravi Shankar [39:47] "An Introduction to Indian Music" The Sounds of India Columbia CS 9296 1968 (originally released in 1958) Re-released to tap into the growing interest thanks to the Beatles' interest in Indian music (specifically George Harrison). Relax! Simon & Garfunkel [43:56] "We've Got a Groovey Thing Goin'" The Sounds of Silence Columbia CS 9269 1966 Helped out here by The Wrecking Crew, including Glen Campbell and Joe South on guitar, Hal Blaine on drums, and Larry Knechtel on the Ray Charles-esque electric piano. Scott Walker + Sunn O))) [47:22] "Brando (Dweller on the Bluff)" Soused 4AD CAD 3428 2014 On the surface, it's an odd pairing, but as the music that fills this album suggests, it's a perfect pairing. Sunn O)))'s Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley had originally reached out to Walker about contributing to their 2009 album Monoliths and Dimensions but were unable to coordinate. Walker subsequently contacted about contributing drones to fill in the silence between his lyrics while working on his epic 2012 release Bish Bosch. Evidently, Sunn O))) brought their full stage equipment to Walker's studio for recording. If you are unfamiliar, it's a wall of Ampeg, Marshall, and HiWatt speakers with Ampeg SVT and Sunn Model T heads. Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass [56:06] "The Girl from Ipanema" South of the Border A&M SP-108 1964 South of the border, down Rio de Janiero way. That's how MonoNeon still plays today, coming up through a rich, inspiring gauntlet of family and community traditions. “I guess my whole style came from just being around my grandma at an early age,” says Thomas. His path has led him to collaborate with dozens of artists, including Nas, Ne-Yo, Mac Miller, and even Prince, and MonoNeon's solo output is dizzying—trying to count up his solo releases isn't an easy feat. Premier Guitar's Chris Kies caught up with the bassist before his show at Nashville's Exit/In, where he got the scoop on his signature 5-string, Ampeg rig, and simple stomp layout, as well as some choice stories about influences, his brain-melting playing style, and how Prince changed his rig.Shop MonoNeon's Rig:Fender MonoNeon Jazz Bass V - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/QyBQeMAmpeg SVT - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/Jz03zNDigiTech Whammy - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/q4LBROCIOKS SOL - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/jrPL2vFull Rig Info: https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundown/mononeonSubscribe to PG's Channel: http://bit.ly/SubscribePGYouTubeWin Guitar Gear: https://bit.ly/GiveawaysPG Don't Miss a Rundown: http://bit.ly/RIgRundownENLMerch & Magazines: https://shop.premierguitar.comPG's Facebook: https://facebook.com/premierguitarPG's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/premierguitar/PG's Twitter: https://twitter.com/premierguitarPG's Threads: https://threads.net/@premierguitarPG's TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@premierguitar[Brought to you by D'Addario: https://ddar.io/wykyk-rr]0:00 - Blu DeTiger & D'Addario0:15 - MonoNeon Playing Intro1:32 - Chris Kies Intro1:52 - Working with Mavis Staples & George Clinton2:40 - Expanding Songwriting on Quilted Stereo3:49 - MonoNeon Signature Fender Jazz V Bass4:51 - Flipping the Bass5:27 - Family Means Everything to MonoNeon6:37 - MonoNeon Tunings6:50 - Exploring MicroTonal Music7:27 - MonoNeon's String-Bending Style8:15 - Prince Introduced the DigiTech Whammy to MonoNeon8:53 - Impact of Performing & Recording with Prince10:57 - Joe Glaser & D'Addario11:13 - Humbuckers in MonoNeon Jazz V12:27 - Ampeg SVT-CL Half Stack12:51 - MonoNeon Pedalboard14:42 - Making Melodies Out of Viral Videos16:01 - MonoNeon's Love for Dadaism & Grandma's Quilts17:14 - MonoNeon Outro Playing17:59 - D'Addario Strings© Copyright Gearhead Communications LLC, 2024

Experimenting with different bass guitars and amplifiers can lead to unique and interesting tones. Vintage bass sounds can add a dynamic and nostalgic element to music. My guest today is producer/engineer Ed Stasium, who was an essential element in the New York punk and alternative rock scene in the 70's and 80's, having worked on seminal albums by The Ramones, Talking Heads and Living Colour.  He has also worked with a wide range of artists such as Mick Jagger, Pretenders, Soul Asylum, The Smithereens, Motorhead, Joan Jett and many more.  Ed likes to say that, “I've seen rock and roll grow up, “ and indeed it's true, having recorded and mixed his first gold single in 1972 with Gladys Knight & The Pips “Midnight Train To Georgia.” After spending time on the staff of New York's well-known Mediasound getting his feet wet in the music business, Ed became the first staff engineer at the famous Power Station where he played an intricate part in the design of the room and choice of equipment. In part 1 of our two-part interview we spoke about his early sessions as a musician with some recording legends, his first big studio break, working for Ampeg, and much more. Ed was one of my first guests way back on Episode 23 in September of 2014, so it was good time for a catch up. I spoke with him via Zoom from his studio outside of San Diego. On the intro I'll take a look at some new data on current merch sales, and new findings on what makes a Stradivarius sound so special. The last two years have given us plenty of reasons to seek a jaunty, joyous listening experience in our music. And one of the best finds around is https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/the-big-5/los-bitchos (Los Bitchos)—the all-female, internationally assembled outfit consisting of Australia-born Serra Petale (guitar), Sweden's Josefine Jonsson (bass), Uruguay's Agustina Ruiz (keytar), and South Londoner Nic Crawshaw (drums). Los Bitchos' bubbly instrumental psychedelia cocktail mixes their collective musical ingredients (Argentinian cumbia, Peruvian chicha, Turkish Anatolian rhythms, and classic American surf rock), creating a devilishly delicious concoction that's refreshing as a mojito, hits like a negroni, and is as tropical as a mai tai. The good-time gals socked the world with their 2022 debut, Let the Festivities Begin!, showcasing their superpower of rump-shaking revelry. Before Los Bitchos' Nashville opening slot in support of Belle and Sebastian, PG was invited to the historic Ryman Auditorium for a quick and loose gear chat. We covered their streamlined setups that include a favored, fast Italian ride (not a Ducati) that made the trip from the U.K., learned why Petale is “Miss Chorus” and loves the effect's “sad sounds,” and was schooled on why Jonsson just needs a J bass and an Ampeg amp to make the room twist and shout. https://ddar.io/XSE.RR (Brought to you by D'Addario XS Strings).

EveAnna Manley is the CEO and co-founder of Manley Laboratories - makers of high-end audio gear frequently found in studios all over the world. Born in Las Vegas stumbled out of vacuum tube lineage as her father, Albert J. Dauray, owned the famous guitar amplifier company, Ampeg, in the late 1960's. EveAnna grew up in Atlanta listening to vacuum tubes and tales of the tube. She and her sister Stacey graduated from the prestigious Westminster Schools. EveAnna was very active in both the music and art programs in high school and then wound up as a music major at Columbia University with a mid-fi system driving her parents' leftover AR-2ax speakers.  On January 30, 1989, a 20 year old EveAnna on sabbatical from her studies at Columbia University met the crew and was hired on to the production team. She quickly learned to solder and assemble vacuum tube amplifiers, and after training a new team of assemblers, EveAnna worked her way into the Quality Control department. It was at this time that the first Manley professional products were developed, starting with the original 1u Reference 60dB Microphone Preamplifier and soon followed by the Manley Enhanced Pultec and Mid Frequency Equalizers. These products, along with the Manley Reference Cardioid and Reference Gold microphones, all made their debut at the 1990 Los Angeles AES Show. The Main Event for this episode is also Travel Time, as Serena helps unpack day one of our 1,500 mile trip to Mall of America and back. During the day we found a couple great stops, a fun photo op, and stayed at what is arguably the best hotel of our 6 days traveling. Opening Slots: Episode 20 starts with a "state of the podcast" address, with some info about future epiodes, and an opportunity to get in on a giveaway sponsored by Ampeg. This episode contains no "Deep Shower Thoughts" or lessons from "When Insults Had Class". But I think you will find the replacement worthwhile, and may even want to listen to it a couple times. The Gear In Here: In the Grotto with the SCC. Thankfully it's not as bad as it sounds. The SCC, or Studio Control Center, is my current device of choice for managing all the I/O sets running from various gear into my two sets of studio monitors. I set out to find and active switcher that met my criteria; compact, shelf-friendly, transparent, easy to use, and stays cool to the touch. It also doesn't hurt that you can find the SCC for well under $200 USD. The name might not be familiar, but his influence and importance to the community of bass guitar players around the world could not speak louder. As Brand Marketing Manager for AMPEG, Dino has kept the soul of grit, growl and grind of the iconic line alive for over 15 years. This and his proficiency of all things bass has made him the one-to-know for the likes of Rudy Sarzo, Eva Gardner, Nathan East, Darryl Jones, Liam Wilson, Marco Mendoza, and many, many more (check out the current roster of artists for Ampeg!) In each episode we will get to unpack a little more info, from Dino's early days playing, to his time studying and teaching at Bass Insitute of Technology (Musician's Institute in California). You can read his official Ampeg bio here. Dino has faced down many challenges throughout life, and in all of them he triumphed. In our conversation on thing is clear: Dino knows how to live life loud. Segments in this episode: Deep Shower Thought you never know what brainstorms might have nearly circled the drain until you here this episode's edition. Travel Time. What do a Dodge Challenger, a very small airport, a broken statute of Captain Morgan, and a map of Wisconsin covering a stretch of road over 6 hours long have in common? In this edition I recall the Good, Bad, and Ugly of my first time traveling to and through Wisconsin. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/livelifeloud/support
