Peter watches Mad Max: Fury Road for the first time in decades, and Eden — who has seen it at least a dozen times — watches the black-and-chrome edition alongside him. Peter finds the opening act almost too uncomfortable to watch, given its uncomfortable parallels to the current political moment, but gets fully on board the moment the sandstorm hits. They dig into what makes the film a masterpiece of practical filmmaking, why Furiosa holds up better than the prequel, and what it means that George Miller also made Babe: Pig in the City and Happy Feet.SHOW NOTESCheck-in / What we've been up to — Eden is riding their cargo bike in 35mph Iowa wind gusts; Peter is heading to Austin for an Intuitive Surgical robotics event. Eden vents about 18 months of accessibility compliance work being ignored by faculty who don't read their emails.Peter's picks — Finishing Dungeon Crawler Carl Book 6 (fun but disposable, and the online fandom's intensity baffles him); finished Season 2 of A Man on the Inside (Ted Danson and his real-life wife Mary Steenburgen falling for each other on screen — highly recommended); Taskmaster Series 21 has started, featuring Kumail Nanjiani. Big metal week — Peter covers a stack of new releases: Slave Machine by Nervosa (vicious all-female death-thrash from Brazil); Too Fast to Die by ArchSpire (potential album of the year if not for Neurosis); new Inferi album featuring departing drummer Spencer Moore; Descent by Immolation; and Master Boot Record's first live album Realtime Execution. Eden's picks — Eden is scrobbling again on Last.fm and shares a chaotic top-four week: Portishead, Rebecca Black (Salvation EP praised as a stone-cold classic), Neurosis, and new discovery Javiera Mena, a Chilean electro-pop artist. Also watched two bad movies with the bad movie crew: Firecracker (notable for a truly unhinged sex scene) and American Cyborg: Steel Warrior ("Children of Men with a $13 budget"). Currently reading a 3,500-page Chinese web novel called Long Awaited Feelings / My Feelings Can Wait. Why Peter struggled with the opening act — Peter found Immortan Joe's cult of worship uncomfortably familiar, given current events, describing it as George Miller predicting how "stupid and gullible people can be." He warmed to the film as it progressed, with the sandstorm sequence being the turning point."A perfect action film" — Eden's framing: not their favorite action film, but possibly a perfect one — no wasted frame, no wasted scene. They've seen it at least a dozen times, and this watch was the black-and-chrome edition, which Miller originally intended before the studio overruled him.Practical effects deep dive — 80–90% of the stunts were practical, shot on location in Namibia under miserable conditions. They highlight the pole-cat war boys actually swinging on moving vehicles, and the real flamethrower guitarist who was instructed not to hold the guitar too high.On the cast — Charlize Theron gets full credit for owning the film as Furiosa. Tom Hardy's near-silent, physically understated performance is praised. Nicholas Hoult's arc as Nux — going from zealot to sacrifice — is called out as the emotional hinge of the film.Frame rate trivia — Eden flags that 50–60% of the film was shot below 24fps, with Miller manipulating frame rates shot-by-shot to control tension and legibility.Furiosa comparison — Eden recommends the prequel but notes its heavy CGI and green screen make it feel cheaper and less embodied than Fury Road. Peter says he's now interested to watch it.The Babe 2 revelation — The episode ends on Eden's genuine disbelief that the director of Fury Road also made Babe: Pig in the City and Happy Feet, and a fun piece of trivia: Immortan Joe's actor, Hugh Keays-Byrne, also played Toecutter, the villain of the original Mad Max.

This week, we wandered through a grab-bag of games, music, and reading before settling into a long-overdue cultural reckoning with This Is Spinal Tap. We talked Sonic games and cursed Sonic-sonas, gacha updates that somehow turn into cyberpunk motorbike fantasies, cheerful amnesia manga, extreme metal singles that absolutely rip, and a handful of games that ranged from surprisingly delightful to instantly forgettable. But the heart of the episode was finally sitting down with Spinal Tap itself—an enormously influential mockumentary that, forty years on, felt quieter, subtler, and stranger than its reputation. We landed somewhere between “mid” and “actually pretty good,” unpacking where it still works, where it shows its age, and why its legacy looms so much larger than the movie itself.  Episode NotesWhat We've Been IntoGamesEden dives into Sonic Forces, embracing the chaos of creating a cursed Sonic-sona (a dog with a grapple gun).A return to Wuthering Waves with the 3.0 update: underground cyberpunk cities, summonable motorcycles, and Sega crossover bike liveries.Peter spends real time with the Playdate handheld and unexpectedly loves Dig Dig Dino—dogs, dinosaurs, and eldritch horror.Mixed feelings on Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy: clunky combat, nonstop chatter, and controller prompts that can't decide what console they're on.Dispatch lands as enjoyable but oddly forgettable—pure popcorn gaming that evaporates once it's done.ReadingCheerful Amnesia delivers wholesome, funny yuri romance built on anime-logic memory loss.A shout-out to Adachi and Shimamura short stories, still reigning supreme.Peter continues through The Dark Forest, the second book in Remembrance of Earth's Past, digging into Wallfacers, Wallbreakers, and long-term cosmic dread.MusicNew doom EP from The Eternal—short, tight, and surprisingly restrained.Reliance by Soen: less adventurous, more consistent, and maybe better for it.Absolute hype for Archspire's new single “Limb of Leviticus”—blisteringly fast with just enough groove to breathe.Main Topic: This Is Spinal TapPrompted by renewed discussion of Rob Reiner and his legacy, we finally sat down with his directorial debut.Initial reaction: not nearly as laugh-out-loud funny as its reputation suggests.Over time, appreciation grew for:Its subtlety and deadpan delivery. The improvised dialogue paired with surprisingly tight plotting and long-payoff jokes.Iconic moments (“these go to eleven,” the cocoon stage prop, mysteriously exploding drummers).Nigel Tufnel emerges as the emotional and comedic core, hinting at the future of Christopher Guest's mockumentary career. We talked about how much of Spinal Tap's impact comes from being first—laying the groundwork for an entire genre that others would later perfect.Final verdict: historically essential, quietly funny, better on reflection than on first watch—and a reminder that movies used to trust audiences more.Big Picture TakeawaysCultural influence doesn't always match immediate enjoyment.Subtlety and restraint are skills we've mostly lost in modern filmmaking.Maybe we should make smaller, cheaper movies again—and let weird ideas breathe.

In this episode, John and Derek talk about Archspire's latest single 'Carrion Ladder,' and talk about the band's extreme metal style, technical prowess, and vocalist Oli Peters's vocal style. They get into the song's chaotic nature and speculate about the band's direction with their upcoming album due in April 2026. The conversation shifts to a personal story about human kindness and the importance of being mindful of others, especially in the context of the metal community's values.www.shittalkreviews.comSpotify - https://tinyurl.com/STR-SpotifyApple Podcasts - https://tinyurl.com/STR-Apple-Podcasts#archspire #carrionladder #toofasttodie #olipeters #deanlamb #tobimorelli #jaredsmith #spencermoore #extrememetal #deathmetal #techdeath #crowdfunding #kindness #humanity #helpingothersDrop us a line! Archspire vocalist Oliver “Oli” Alleron is clearly excited about returning to Australia, with the band set to tour in January. From his love of Australian crowds to his unexpected obsession with The Block, Oliver speaks warmly about the country, its food, and its famously outgoing fans. He recalls being blown away by the sheer number of shoeys happening on stage during their last visit, and hints they may make a return. With a new drummer joining the line-up and a freshly self-produced album funded largely by fans, Archspire are entering an exciting new chapter. Oliver admits perfection isn't the goal live; having fun, staying relaxed, and connecting with the crowd matters most. This week we keep things intentionally low-effort and high-chaos by drafting the Billboard year-end #1 songs from 1980 through 1999. We each build a ten-song playlist from a shared pool, knowing that once a song is picked, it's gone forever. Along the way we uncover timeless masterpieces, generational blind spots, slow-dance trauma, and more than a few baffling chart decisions. By the end, it's less about “best songs of all time” and more about what pop culture we survived — and what it says about the decades that made us.Cold Open & Life UpdatesEden survives Iowa weather whiplash, including snowmelt, wind advisories, and dogs who refuse to come inside. We check in on end-of-year fatigue, weddings on the horizon, and the general desire to just get to January. What We've Been Checking OutEden scores a surprise manga haul via Reddit, including:Kase-san and… — a quiet, funny, wholesome romance that desperately wants its characters to communicate.Chainsmoker Cat — gross, chaotic, and deeply committed to depicting the world's worst anthropomorphic cat girl.Continued time in Where Winds Meet, including discovering that joining the “hot evil people” sect requires in-game marriage… followed by divorce.Peter continues slowly working through The Three-Body Problem and Gödel, Escher, Bach.A brief dive into habit-building via the new Atomic Habits workbook.Music check-in includes Archspire's new single “Carrion Ladder” and the eternal joy of Apple Music Replay actually getting things right.Gaming includes Ball Pit, Megabonk, and the looming temptation of finally committing to Baldur's Gate 3.The Main Event: Billboard #1 Draft (1980–1999)We draft songs snake-style, locking each other out as we go.Early rounds are stacked with undeniable classics:Whitney Houston's “I Will Always Love You”Prince's “When Doves Cry”Blondie's “Call Me”Cher's “Believe”George Michael emerges as an '80s powerhouse with multiple entries. The generational divide shows up fast:Peter leans heavily '80s.Eden lives firmly in the '90s (for better and worse). We acknowledge slow-dance staples that were emotionally formative whether we liked them or not.The middle rounds reveal just how strange pop history can be when viewed year-by-year.By the later picks, we're openly throwing ourselves on grenades:The Macarena is drafted out of mercy.Multiple songs are chosen purely because something has to be.We question how certain cultural touchstones (My Heart Will Go On, Aaliyah, Bone Thugs) somehow missed the top spot in their years.Big TakeawaysBillboard #1 does not mean “best song.”The '80s age better than the '90s in pop memory (and fashion).Nostalgia is selective, and pop charts are cruel.Drafting music is a great way to discover what you genuinely love — and what you merely survived.

What better way to kick off a new year than a trifecta of brutality? Which is exactly what Australia is getting next February when death metal miscreants Aborted join forces with Archspire and Organectomy for a tour so crushing they have had to name it the Return To Prison Island Australia Tour 2026.For the last three decades, Aborted have pioneered death metal, taking no prisoners in their blending and cross-pollination of extreme metal, death-grind and ferocious extremities neatly wrapped in a ball of technical precision that defies their relentless approach. Their most recent album, Vault Of Horrors, solidified Aborted's supremacy, and now they are headed our way to spread sonic carnage across the land. While these three bands will complete a four-date capital city run themselves, Aborted and Archspire have also been invited to perform at both Froth & Fury Festival shows, rounding out the tour with bookends in Perth and Adelaide.HEAVY sat down with Aborted's Daniel Konráðsson to find out what to expect. We start by asking if Aborted has hit the road with either Archspire or Organectomy before."We've toured with both of those bands before, absolutely," he smiled at the memory. "We did a summer tour with Archspire, which was a great time. We toured the U.S. together, North America, and had a lot of fun. Those guys definitely are very upper alley, both musically and personally. We've known those guys a long time; the two bands go way back. And sonically, I feel like they align as well, so that makes for a very good package. It's kind of broad, but it's also going to be pretty pummelling most of the way through, which is not bad (laughs). Organectomy were with us throughout Europe, and those guys were awesome. Absolutely awesome. So we're very excited to see them all again, definitely."Over the full interview, the discussion focused on the upcoming Australian tour and live performances by Aborted. Dan shared insights on the importance of crowd participation in creating an engaging atmosphere during shows, emphasising that they aim to foster an active environment where the audience's enjoyment is key to a successful performance. He expressed excitement for Froth & Fury Festival, highlighting the unique experience of a metal-only festival and the opportunity to discover new bands. Dan recommended three key songs for new listeners and reflected on his smooth transition into the band, noting his pride in enhancing their sound while maintaining high production quality in their latest album and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Words by Angela CroudaceUK death metal giants Ingested are returning to Australian shores, and drummer Lyn Jeffs gave HEAVY the inside scoop on what fans can expect. After their tour in 2023 alongside Archspire, the band was blown away by the warm reception and immediately knew they had to come back — this time for a headlining run.“We always wanted to come over and do a headliner,” Lyn shared. “The Aussie crowds were amazing — really good energy, and we made solid connections with bands like Melancholia and Werewolves. It just felt right.”Ingested's recent shift back to a five-piece line up has brought fresh energy and creativity to both the stage and studio. With the addition of guitarist Andrew and bassist Tom, the band embraces a more collaborative approach to writing and performance. “It's way more dynamic now,” said Lyn. “We've got new perspectives, and it's even influencing the sound. There's a section in the new track ‘Ultra Flesh' that's just bass — something we've never done before.”Their physical and mental preparation for tours has evolved over the years, too. Gone are the hard-partying days of trying to live out Pantera-style tour videos. Now, Lyn sticks to yoga, running, and a gym routine to stay stage-ready. “Playing the kind of music we do is like a sport,” he said. “It's not normal to play these tempos — it's f***ing stupid really — but if you prepare well, you can still perform at your best.”The band is embracing this tour as a way to connect their evolving sound with their roots. Expect older tracks to return to the set list, now that they've got longer headline slots.Despite their brutal sound, Lyn reminds us not to judge a book by its cover. “People expect us to be scary or into horror 24/7,” he laughs. “But most of us are just regular people who like football, cycling, or different kinds of music.”With their grounded approach and renewed energy, Ingested's return to Australia promises to be a tour that fans — and the band — won't soon forget.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

In wrapping up 2023 for the Scars and Guitars podcast, I take a closer look at the significant events and highlights defining the musical journey. Throughout the year, I attended a variety of live performances, including shows by Emperor, I Am Morbid, Incantation, Extreme, Living Colour, Hanabie, Archspire, Ingested, Triple Kill, Orpheus Omega, Halo Effect, and Misery, amongst many others. I discuss each show and summarise the performance and why it was noteworthy.  The podcast featured engaging conversations with prominent figures across heavy metal and beyond. I had the pleasure of hosting many Cradle of fIlth alums: Paul Ryan, Chris Bell, Nigel Wingrove, Mike Exeter, James McIlroy, and, notably, Sarah Jezebel Deva. There were conversations with Scott Edgar from Misery, Phil Soussan, Jesper Strömblad, the Tardy brothers from Obituary, Jason Bonham, Jamie Stinson AKA Astennu, Blitz from Overkill, Mille Petrozza, David Ellefson, Marc from Metal Church, Scott from Carnifex, Dave Coutts and Mark Dunn, Eric from The Amenta, Dave Haley and many, many more. I discuss why each episode is essential.  In terms of literature, my collection expanded with the addition of the Silverchair Book and Tana Douglas's roadie memoir. So I have something to say about these books.  Regarding musical releases, several notable albums caught my attention. There's a summary of each, and I explain why the alums are worthy.  Suffocation's "Hymns from the Apocrypha" highlighted Terrence Hobb's consistent musical prowess. Overkill's "Scorched" reaffirmed their enduring impact in the world of metal. "When Angels Kill" by Fifth Angel impressed with Ken Mary's drumming finesse. Incantation's "Unholy Deification" offered doom-tinged death metal at its best. Cadaver's "The Age of the Offended" featured a strong death metal statement with Ronni Le Tekrø. Sadus returned with "The Shadow Inside," showcasing Darren Travis's dedication. Wes Hauch's "Death is But a Door (EP)" demonstrated Wes Hauch's guitar virtuosity. Grand Cadaver's "Deities of Deathlike Sleep" delivered old-school Stockholm death metal. The Amenta's "Plague of Locus" showcased their take on classic covers. Werewolves and Faustian, featuring Matt Wilcock, offered creative and competent riff-heavy music. Additionally, I've compiled an eligibility list for future discussions, which includes Cyhra, Doro, Till the Dirt, Sylosis, Svalbard, Cryptopsy, Watain, Cavalera Brothers, Immortal, Alice Cooper, Cannibal Corpse, Shepherds Rein, Steven Wilson, AETERNUS, Aeons Abyss, Kataklysm, Ringworm, and Carnifex. In conclusion, 2023 was a year filled with remarkable music and insightful conversations about extreme music. I remain committed to providing a serious and thoughtful perspective on the genre, and I look forward to continuing this journey in the future. Thank you for being a part of the musical exploration! Have a great Christmas and even better 2024! Andrew McK.

As (not exactly) voted by our patrons, we have the Fear, And Loathing In Las Vegas deep dive! Arguably the most technical band out there, or definitely one of the most technical bands out there! Let's see if anyone notices me reusing the same blurb from the Archspire deep dive and not properly referring to the Japanese "electronicore" band that I really love. Also, cool people time with The Mortuary Assistant, Thymesia, Backpack Hero, Carter, and more. Enjoy! Join our community on Facebook! Or, if you want to get more involved, with exclusive content and stuff, support us on Patreon! By the way, the NYN album Entropy: Of Chaos And Salt is finally out, so check it out!
