Have you ever considered that the way most of us humans exercise or at least try to stay in shape usually has nothing to do with how we have evolved to move? Think about a rowing machine or a barbell. When is the last time you saw a gorilla jetting up a river in a canoe or lifting a 25lb log up and down for 12 reps? The human body is designed to move in nature, using its environment as a ‘gym.’ That environment might be a forest, or in the case of today’s guest- the concrete jungle of a city. In this episode, we learn all about moving your body like the human ape that you are, from one of the most popular natural movement experts in the world - Travis Brewer. Travis has combined elements of Acroyoga, Parkour, functional movement training, animal-based movements, and calisthenics, to create a system called ‘ninja flow.' This fitness system requires very few tools and certainly does not require membership to a gym, with it’s inherent forced exposure to bad LED lighting, irritating music, and the toxic fumes of rubber floors, and plastic exercise equipment. Through his many years of extensive training, Travis has not only learned to execute seemingly impossible feats of human movement but has also inspired millions of fans as a finalist on the hit NBC show American Ninja Warrior. If you're interested in expanding your vision of what your body is capable of, and in finding new and exciting ways to achieve a higher level of fitness, this episode is for you. It's also for anyone you know who could use a little inspiration in their movement practice. So do us all a favor, and share this show with a friend. To your physical potential, Luke Episode Breakdown: How Travis combined elements of Acroyoga, Parkour, functional movement training, animal based movements, and calisthenics, to create his own system called ‘ninja flow’ The power of certain numbers The importance of gratitude How losing his high paying job in real estate led to becoming a fitness TV star How the book autobiography of a yogi transformed Travis’s life How the lessons of self realization and meditation moved him in the direction of fitness and movement How Travis landed a gig on the hit TV Show American Ninja Warrior on NBC The importance of remaining teachable, in your body, mind, and spirit Connecting your mind and body to achieve a flow state Why the first step in fitness is strengthening your core, and opening your hips Getting started with animal flow: Travis gives a live lesson called an ape crawl The importance of positive progression How climbing trees, and signposts can become the foundation of a super fit body The idea that the world we live in can become your gym Exploring the power of ice baths, infrared saunas Why Travis became a vegan for a year, and why he stopped Best fats to eat for energy Why non-organic foods are not an option How Travis beat stage fright on national TV, and how to overcome all fears Lifestyle recommendations Episode Resources: Jiyo - Personal well-being app by Deepak Chopra Parkour training Frank Medrano - Calisthenics expert Acroyoga Modern Tarzan - Ninja warrior Mike Fitch Dylan Werner Products mentioned: Visit guest page here. Travis Brewer – Calisthenic Athlete / Ninja Warrior / Social Entrepreneur on a mission to inspire...
Professional Ninja and Calisthenic Superstar, Travis Brewer, join Armen, Scott, and Eddie as they chat about musical acts at the Games, Travis' start in athletics, competing in bar calisthenics, get into the QDub, then Travis talks about competing in Ninja Warrior, injuries, developing skills on the bar, the get into the lightning round.
The word ninja was once used to designate someone highly trained in martial arts (masked, deadly, and absolutely nothing to do with mutant turtles). Currently, if you look up the definition of ninja, you'll see that it's used in a slightly different way. A ninja in our world today is defined as a person who excels in a particular skill or activity. You can be a ninja at cooking desserts, a ninja at dancing, a ninja at videos games, and the list goes on and on. It's just about having the audacity to develop the skills necessary to be great. That's why I'm here to tell you that you, yes YOU, have the capacity to be an %$#-kicking ninja! What better way to become a ninja than actually learning from a ninja yourself? My guest today is someone who has excelled in numerous skills, and has been able to transform this mastery into many areas of his life as a result. He was actually a semi-finalist on the television show American Ninja Warrior that highlights some of the most elite all-around athletes in the world. And this all happened after he was faced with a devastating injury and thought that his athletic career was over. This episode is not only about becoming the best version of yourself, it's also about overcoming adversity, and utilizing your body in ways that help to empower your mind and emotions. The truth is, we are all capable of so much more than we are achieving right now, but what holds us back are the mental barriers we've put up for ourselves. It's the lack of belief, lack of motivation, and lack of perseverance that usually tell the story of how much we can achieve. But, no more!!! Today we take the necessary steps to learn how to gain more mastery over our bodies so that we can translate that over into more mastery in the other areas of our lives. You see, when you are able to overcome physical obstacles you thought were difficult (if not impossible!) that immediately expands your threshold for what you can overcome in your relationships, finances, career, and more. Gaining more physical health and strength are so important because your body is the vehicle that you move through this life in. If you achieve, create, or experience anything, it's through the amazing body that you have. It's truly a special and sacred relationship. Right now you're about to learn from Travis Brewer, a true ninja warrior himself, on how to become stronger in your body, overcome any obstacle you're faced with, plus a whole lot more. In this episode you'll discover: One of the most potent things you can do when others get sick around you. What type of sugars have incredible healing properties. How a tragedy or physical injury can close one door but open many more. Why you must NEVER STOP TRAINING (so you are ready for when your moment comes). Why learning how to be strong in your body will make you strong mentally and spiritually as well. How keeping a positive mental attitude will help you in your progression. How overcoming physical obstacles translates to overcoming obstacles in our lives. Why children are more open and excited to try new things. Why technique really matters (in sport and in life). 5 essential exercises you can do to gain more control and ability with your body. The best progression exercises to help you do impressive pull-ups! What partner training is and how it can help you improve faster. How to develop powerful pressing ability for push ups and handstands. What the #1 core exercise is (and several variations for it!) What interesting things you can do to improve your grip strength. How to enable yourself to do single-leg squats (aka pistol squats). What the 4 keys are for achieving anything (Travis' 4 P's!) Items mentioned in this episode include: * Onnit.com/Model
“I can’t let the fear of hurting myself stop me from being who I want to be.” "Can my passion be monetized?" I get asked this question all the time. There are passions that are easy to monetize. If you're passionate about finance, accounting or investing, you can easily find a paying position in these fields... But what if you're passionate about painting? What about history? What about shoes? These arts are traditionally considered hard, if not impossible, to monetize. I believe today, with enough passion, inspiration and perseverance you can make a career from nearly anything. My next guest on the show has built a career from playing on pull-up bars. He is an incredible athlete and an astonishing acrobat. Not only does he have deep insight into the lifestyle of a creative entrepreneur, but he also is a student of self-actualization. We explore all these things and more in our interview. Thank you for downloading. Please let me introduce, the American Ninja Warrior, Travis Brewer. “When you are living with inspiration, other people are inspired by the way that you live.” Some things we learn in this podcast: What is a ninja?
