021: Resilience and Mental Health Through Ayurveda with Manas Kshirsagar, AD

In this episode, I talk with Manas Kshirsagar about resilience. We also discuss the challenge of mental health. He shared that the reason millennials are greatly affected with mental health is because there are things that they yearn for that have the same roots as past generations but have no ability or resources to fulfill it. We also delve deeper into how Ayurveda has all of the tools necessary to combine the physical body, the mind, and spiritual connection. He emphasized that understanding your dharma is the key in being resilient. Manas Kshirsagar also shared the two doshas—Prakriti as the composition of the body and Vikiriti as the imbalance. He also talks about how Prakriti will always determine our stress response while Vikriti will determine how our physical body responds to that stress. Further, he shared why the Amalaki flower or Amla in common language is considered by some as a biohack. Lastly Dr. Manas shared his recommendations of herbs and supplements for the physical body, for the mind and also for sleep. Manas Kshirsagar is a certified Ayurvedic doctor with an extensive Ayurvedic background as he comes from a Rig Vedic Bramhin tradition. We discuss traditional dance, specifically Natya Shastra, and how it was created for the sole purpose of entertainment but also drives messages and values for people to get a sense of solace and relief. Nirupama and Rajendra also share how Indian dance is presented through the four modes of communication which are the physical representation, verbal representation, make-up and costumes, and then pure emotions using Natya Shastra as a text for all the theater forms of India such as dance and music. In addition, they also discuss how Navarasa—which refers to the nine expressions that humans often show—is expressed in dance form. Dr. Lynn Marie Morski is a physician, attorney, and lifelong quitter. In this episode she shares her story—growing up with an uber strict, right-wing father but gave her freedom to make decisions for herself, learning dance as a kid, studying multimedia in graduate school, pivoting to medical school to financially secure her future, becoming an attorney, and making the decision to stop living in fear which led her to discovering plant medicine. Dr. Lynn Marie Morski is a Mayo Clinic-trained physician in family medicine with specialty training in sports medicine. After graduation from sports medicine fellowship, Dr. Morski began work as a physician at the Veterans Administration, and then later began law school at Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego, CA, where she graduated as valedictorian in December 2014.
