Two Gallants tells the story of two men progressing through the streets of Dublin but ultimately going nowhere. Packed with religious and knightly imagery, this is simultaneously one of the most whimsical and disconcerting stories in the collection. In her conversation with M. Teresa Caneda-Cabrera, Evelyn Conlon discusses the impact of the lockdowns and her aversion to ‘doomscrolling'; being a writer who is a feminist and being political by engaging in stories that are not considered the norm; using literature to dip into the corridors of truth while history sticks to the facts; reworking Joyce's story ‘Two Gallants'; and being more Irish when you are away from Ireland. The author also reads two excerpts from her work.

Happy St. Patrick's Day! In this seasonally appropriate episode, we read the first 8 short stories that comprise James Joyce's 1914 collection ‘Dubliners'. A portrait of middle-class life in the titular city at the turn of the 20th century, things undeniably get weird, and the gang has to figure out how to talk about it without throwing up from sadness. Tune in to find out if they succeed! Theo is Aladdin in more ways than one. Jackie doesn't understand how e-books work. Rachel wants her $20 back. Topics include: screaming carrots, Apple Jacks, the inaugural Oberlin goat, petty theft, young love, Scrooge McDuck, Highlights Magazine, chewing loud enough to wake the dead, and feeling seen in a bad way.    Stories covered: The Sisters, An Encounter, Araby, Evaline, After the Race, Two Gallants, The Boarding House, A Little Cloud

Re-recording the worst episode of the podcast, how I faired in finals this semester, complications with Chemistry, failing to feel accomplished, re-watching the James Cameron comedy/action classic "True Lies" with Arnold Schwarzenegger, a brief survey of the short story "Two Gallants" from James Joyce's "Dubliners," the need for today's artists to create consistently, audiences wanting an entire body of work to sink into, the very "first-film" qualities of the horror movie "M.O.M. (Mothers of Monsters)," the inevitable failure of your creative career, and using that as motivation to create what you want and not what you think will succeed. Music by Disasterpeace.

RECORDED AS POP CULTURE CLUB:  One of my all-time favorite bands is Low.  They've been around for over 20 years, and I first heard them back in 2001 for the record Things We Lost In The Fire.  Now they are about to release their 11th full-length record next month entitled Ones & Sixes, and I couldn't be more excited to hear it based on the first two singles.  I play a sample of the first single, and end the show with the second single as well as a couple of snippets of two of my favorite Low songs. But most importantly, I got to spend a half hour talking with an incredible songwriter, Alan Sparhawk, who along with his wife Mimi, create music alongside bassist Steve Garrington.  Tickets are on sale now for their North American and European Tours.  Low will be joined by Andy Shauf, Two Gallants, Mike Noga (The Drones), and Chelsea Wolfe so this is a show you won't want to miss, and another interview that I couldn't be happier to share with you. Special thanks to Bekah at SubPop and Low's management for making this happen, and thank YOU for listening. "No Comprende" - Low
