Or a week or two. When did you first start listening to podcasts and what was/were the first podcast(s) that you listened to? In 2005, I heard about podcasts. I discovered a show called Fanboy Radio and it piqued my interest. The first podcast I actually listened to was Comic Geek Speak. I had heard about Ricky Gervais, and about podcasts but did not know where to find them. I downloaded the Yahoo Podcatcher, which was a big unwieldy thing that took over my computer. Once I learned how I-tunes worked, I was hooked. What are some of your current favorite podcasts that you listen to and why? I am a huge comedy nerd, as well as an Anglophile. So I listen to tons of comedy, plus a bunch of soccer shows from the UK. I listen to most of the Earwolf shows. Comedy Bang Bang, etc. Kevin Smith’s Smodcast is great. It’s usually a sort of fluid list. I’m always looking for something new to check out, but I’m kind of picky. Since it is soccer season currently, I listen to the football shows from the UK first. BBC 606 is the best, it is a phone in show with opinions from fans instead of pundits. The BBC shows, most British shows, are the only ones that originate as radio shows first. Mostly I stick with strictly podcasts. I did my first podcast in late 2005. It was called Gabe’s Superhero Show, then my wife and I did Comics and More with Gabe and Mandy. Superhero Show went 13 episodes and then my daughter was born and I had no time to podcast. Comics and More was just a couple of episodes, my wife wasn’t really into it. It took several years to get into it again with Hollywood Scandals of Yesteryear, and I’m at episode 16, trying to stay on a regular schedule. I was just captivated by the medium, and felt the need to broadcast about something. Anything. As a podcaster, do you have any influences (they don't have to be from the podcasting world)? Kevin Smith was and is a huge influence. He is always professing his love of podcasting and suggesting people record their own shows about the things that they are passionate about. Beyond that, all of the podcasters that I listen to influence me in various ways, to try to be funny, or interesting, or keep it short, etc. The guys who do solo podcasts, like Bill Burr, Greg Proops, etc. I am not comparing myself to either of these great talents, but I aspire to do an interesting show on my own. No one wants to listen to me blather on for an hour or more, but these guys can do a stream of consciousness show that is entertaining, interesting, and informative as well. The Danny Baker Show from England is inspirational to me, just from Danny’s delivery and turn of phrase. He is a professional broadcaster with years of experience and his call in show is about random slice of life things. I would like to say that when Tig Notaro discussed her various illnesses and issues on her podcast, Professor Blastoff, I felt like my friend was sick and I cried like a baby. Conversely, when Kevin Smith read his old journal entries in the Emo Kev episodes of Smodcast, I had to pull the car over because I was laughing so hard, tears literally streaming down my face. These two examples show the power of podcasts, to touch people and to entertain people in a very personal way, and that’s what I love so much about the medium. Discuss your podcast, Hollywood Scandals Of Yesteryear. My show Hollywood Scandals of Yesteryear started out as just what it sounds. Scandals from the early days of Hollywood; sex, drugs, sex. But after a couple of episodes that started to feel a little, I don’t know, like I wasn’t giving these people their due. I would not want to be remembered for the one time I did such and such with so and so. So I changed tack and started profiling the people overall. I still start with or try to find some “scandalous” or juicy bit of information. But it is basically profiles of the Silent Era Celebrities in around 15 minutes. Eventually, I’ll get into the Talkies, but I’m not sure when. How much preparation and what kind of preparation, if any, goes into each episode of Hollywood Scandals Of Yesteryear? Initially, I found a list of celebrities from the 10’s and 20’s who had famous or infamous issues. Then I thought of famous firsts. First overdose, first murder, etc. I’ll hear a name of an early Hollywood star and look them up, see if there’s anything that stands out. As far as research, I look on Wikipedia. Sometimes I’ll check the IMDB, but mostly I just keep it to Wikipedia. It’s all the research I need. On the specials, like the Lost Films, Rediscovered Films, or the upcoming Hayes Code Special, I’ll look a little deeper but I don’t like to get too bogged down. Keep it light. What criteria, if any, do you use to decide who to ask to be a guest on Hollywood Scandals Of Yesteryear? I’m going to keep it guest free, unless someone really wants to do the show with me. I had a bad experience last year with a potential guest. I approached an author who works in the same genre as my podcast. He responded with a laundry list of reasons why he would not appear on my “little show”, not professional, etc. It really sent me into a tail-spin. I did not record a podcast for almost 6 months because of this one person’s opinion. It is absolutely ridiculous to let someone affect you like that, but it just got to me. Not anymore. If someone were to approach me and ask to co-host or be a guest, I would definitely agree. But my show is a very niche show and most people are not that interested. Don’t let people put you off. Just record. Do you have a favorite episode(s) of Hollywood Scandals Of Yesteryear If so, which episode(s) and why? I would have said Fatty Arbuckle, because he got railroaded and people should hear about it. But Douglas Fairbanks stands out now that I think about it. He was just an amazing guy. How amazing? You’ll have to listen to the podcast. Ha! Are you at liberty to discuss any of the Hollywood scandals of yesteryear that you will be discussing on upcoming episodes? The Hays Code is coming up in an episode sometime soon, I think. I think it is Will Hays, not sure of the first name, I’ll check Wikipedia before I record. Anyway, Mr. Hays was a colossal douche who thought films were too racy and enacted, somehow, a code of conduct for the film industry. This was 1930. What are some of your favorite Hollywood scandals of yesteryear and why? I guess I’ll go with the fact that most of the silent films have been lost. That to me is a scandal. Some of these people were big stars and ALL of their films have been lost. We have production stills and whatnot, but they have been erased from the history of their profession. Yes, it’s me, your old – or, perhaps, new – friend, Marc Hershon and I'm your concierge for Epi93 of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast. First off, let me apologize for the delay in bringing you this episode of the podcast. I have been swamped with both my regular job, which is a full-time, in-the-office, meeting-with-clients, boss-to-answer-to kind of thing, and I have also been doing some writing in my off hours, which is more fun but less profitable. (Several articles coming out for Marin Magazine, the first one in the September issue!) And I’m helping a buddy work on a screenplay long distance, which involves a lot of emails, phone calls and pecking away on a file we keep sending back and forth to each other. Back to Succotash. Normally we feature a generous helping of clips from comedy podcasts from around the internet. I’m still sort of coming out of “recovery mode” from the tragic suicide of Robin Williams, so the next couple of episodes are going to be a little different than the usual fare. Although SOME of the usual fare will be in here, too. I do have several clips that have been harvested by our associate producer Tyson Saner. And we’ve got a double dose o’ Durst with TWO Bursts O’ Durst with comedian/social commentator Will Durst, the 10 Most Active Shows in Stitcher’s Top 100 Comedy Podcast List, and a brand new Henderson’s Pants commercial. I’m going to talk a little bit about Robin in this episode mainly because, in my interview with this epi’s special guest, W. Kamau Bell, he and I talk about it toward the end of our time together. I interviewed Kamau a couple of weeks ago and we had only gotten the news a few days earlier so we kind of had to talk about it. Kamau has recently moved back to the Bay Area after being in New York to work on his Totally Biased TV show for FX and, fatally, for FXX. We chat about how he got that amazing opportunity via Chris Rock, as well as what some of his future plans may be now that the show is done. I had cast Kamau in the pilot episode for a web series called SpamBUSTERS! that ended up not happening, along with Dana Eagle and Shane Elliott. Kamau and I discuss the project during our interview but here, for the first time, YOU get to see the rough cut of this "lost" pilot episode. Personal Reflection I am planning a special Robin tribute episode, which is likely to be entirely clip-based. Tyson is working hard to round up as many clips as he can find where the podcasters mention and reflect on Robin and who he way, as well as what he meant and brought to people.  Related to that, I was texting with our friend, Phil Leirness, co-host of the Chillpak Hollywood Hour, just two days after it happened and he asked me how I was feeling. I told him “Stunned.” He responded on their show this week much as he did to me in text form and I have included that response in this episode. I first saw Robin perform in a little club in Sausalito, just over the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco, in 1978. He was a few years ahead of me at the same high school and at the same junior college before he headed off to Julliard. But I never crossed paths with him then. But after I saw him perform the first time, I started hanging out in the comedy scene in San Francisco in the late 70’s and early 80’s and we’d see each every so often. We occasionally even ended up sharing a stage and doing improv together from time to time and he was a fairly regular fixture in my comedy life during the past 30 years. When he was hanging out back in Marin County again after his CBS TV show got cancelled, he was down. Depressed, I guess. But not dour or morose. At the most, you might suspect he’d start drinking again. Or using coke or some other drugs that he used to be into. But no one that I know that knew him figured on him ending it all. So “stunned”, at least for me, was a viable reaction to carry me through the first week and a half without him being around. Then grief starts to creep in, and sadness, and that horrible, horrible knowledge that I’ll never see him hanging around the scene any more. He’ll never be a surprise who you didn’t even know was in town but somehow found out we were doing improv at some shithole bar somewhere and there he was, bounding up on stage out of the darkness and already in character to help move the scene ahead. But enough of that for now. We deal, as we do, when one of our own has gotten lost and wanders away. And we hope that others around us will take it as a cue to perhaps say something if they can shake the grip of that demon they’re wrestling with long enough to ask for some help. I don’t know a whole lot about the guys behind Funny Looking but, from their homesite I took the following: “Funny Looking is a podcast recorded by two men with some terrible audio equipment. Our aim is to seek out the funny in this slowly decaying world. We all need a laugh and hopefully Funny Looking can guide you to something worth your time. At the very least, our podcast should be able to brighten up the commute to work when you are sandwiched between snogging teenagers and smelly sweaty businessmen.” In this clip, from their Epi14, Gav and Pete talk to Teresa Coyne and Mark Silcox, who were involved in the Machynlleth Comedy Festival.   Getting GeekyPart of the Great American Broadcast Network, or GABnet, comes a podcast or internet radio show called Getting Geeky with Miranda Janell. Her website says: “She's smart. She's wired in to today's social media. She knows and loves science and technology. She makes all of it easy to understand and more than that, makes it fun. Then there's movies and TV, where she is very opinionated and yes she can get passionate about politics too. All this adds up to make her the snarky geek queen of GABNet.” Our associate producer Tyson Saner found her and sliced off a hunk just for you…   Angry Beards PodcastWe have a standing offer on this show where we offer you the chance to tell us about YOUR favorite comedy podcasts that we maybe haven’t had a chance to cover and play a clip from yet. We recently got a tweet from the Angry Beards Podcast suggesting we pay attention to The Dollop, with Dave Anthony and Gareth Reynolds.  But come on -- if you tell us your show is called Angry Beards, we have GOT to check that shit out. Here are Alex and Anthony, the owners, one supposes, of the aforementioned angry beards. Not a whole lot of info about Alex and Anthony. What there was Tyson managed to shake out of their podcast app: “Two angry bearded men. Discussing life in a small town and providing useful information along the way.”   The Dollop The fact is we actually featured a clip from the very first episode of The Dollop, when Dave Anthony was flying solo and trying something new when Greg Behrendt stepped off the grid for a bit and there were no new Walking The Room episodes going on. What's changed is that Dave has been joined on The Dollop by Gareth Reynolds. Tyson clipped this from Epi18, where they’re discussing famous French serial imposter Frederic Pierre Bourdin, aka "The Chameleon". Final Word This epi clocks in at an hour and forty-five minutes. Some people think these Succotash episodes are getting too long. I prefer to think of us as the podcast that keeps giving. Okay, I’ve been teasing this for a few weeks now but I'm finally going to pop the top on the roadtrip recording I made of Dana Carvey, San Francisco veteran comedian Larry “Bubbles” Brown, and me. The occasion was a pair of theater gigs that Mr. Carvey was headlining — one in Medford, Oregon, the other in Redding, California – and which Mr. Brown was the opening act. Me? I was the chauffeur, documentarian and backstage announcer. We had two GoPro cameras rigged up in the car, courtesy of a trio of documentary filmmakers who are doing a project about comedy in San Francisco (in which Larry plays a prominent part) and we also had a digital recorder running so that we might grab some on-the-road chatter for Succotash. Thanks to my technical knowhow, we almost failed to captured both video and audio during the trip but we did manage to capture enough to fill out this latest epi. (Apologies to listeners: Longtime Succotashians know that I like to nitpick when it comes to crappy audio quality in podcasts and - due to road noise and the other hazards of recording in a vehicle moving in excess of 70 mph, we ended up with a less-than-optimal podcast-quality recording. But I've cleaned it up as much as I can so, hopefully, you'll enjoy the drive along with us.) The Edge with Mark ThompsonThis week my combing through podcasts turned up an old acquaintance: Mark Thompson. He's been doing TV weather, news and voiceover mostly out of LA for years but we first me when he would guest host show with my improv group in San Francisco at The Punchline in the 80's. About a dozen episodes or so ago, Mark flipped the switch on The Edge podcast. Heather Ankeny is his co-pilot and in the most recent epi, his guest was the very funny Caprice Crane, who is a TV writer and an author. Her parents were pretty well-known folks. Dad was broadcaster Les Crane and - in this clip - Caprice tells what it was like having Tina Louise (Gilligan's Island's Ginger) as her mom. You Had To Be ThereSplitsider.com has their own comedy podcast network and You Had To Be There, hosted by Sara Schaefer & Nikki Glaser, is part of the roster.
