Episode 53 | Future-Ready IT OfferingsThe Big Themes:ServiceNow's innovation: Wayne Sadin talks about ServiceNow, which Bob recently wrote about, as a first mover in the market, leading the way in creating intelligent solutions that facilitate interoperability between different applications and workflows. This innovation reflects a broader trend in the tech industry toward integrated platforms that can handle diverse business needs without forcing organizations to invest in multiple standalone tools.Interoperability focus: Vendors should prioritize creating systems that allow for seamless interoperability and integration across various platforms. Interoperability is not merely about compatibility; it encompasses the ability to facilitate data sharing and process integration among disparate systems.Multi-cloud strategies: Wayne notes the importance of multi-cloud strategies, suggesting that flexibility and the ability to connect different systems will be crucial for organizations looking to avoid vendor lock-in. In an era where no single cloud provider can meet every organization's needs, a multi-cloud approach allows businesses to select the best solutions tailored to their specific requirements. The Big Quote: “The answer for every vendor is, to facilitate interoperability, make it easy for me to do my job better. Yes, you could build a walled garden, like the cloud vendors all did . . . That's the resort of the person with the inferior product . . . I want the ability to interoperate. I want them to all think this is not a zero-sum game."

Today, we talk coronavirus and why it’s a number one priority.Episode 13In this episode: Wayne begins by saying the world divides up into the digital haves and the digital have nots. He says if you’re Google, every Googler has a mobile device and they carry it with them everywhere they go. Their network has the ability to handle more than 100,000 people working at home. But he says with construction companies and manufacturing companies, 90% of your staff works in the office – and that’s an abrupt transition. He says meanwhile, you’ve got people quarantined and locked down out of a sense of prudence – and you may want more and more people to work from home.Wayne says people laugh when he comes into a client’s office, because has a power supply, a spare screen, charging bricks, a battery, and two headsets in the bag. But he says, it’s naïve to say everybody’s got a laptop, because that’s not the case. For example, you don’t need a laptop when you’re an accounts payable person. And he says you probably have collaboration tools. On the business side, he says, are your people aware of how to log in? How about printers? Do they have a printer at home?He says the coronavirus is number one priority. Staying home and staying healthy is something he wouldn’t prioritize over corporate profits. He says there are going to be companies that emerge from this crisis in better shape. And there are companies that are just going to fall apart because they can’t operate in a different model.Wayne says the crisis may be over in a couple of weeks, but he says the infection rate is going to overload the healthcare environment. Wayne Sadin and I focus in particular on what CEOs and boards must do to lead their companies successfully into the Digital Age. Today, we talk 2020. Wayne shares his predictions, ideas and recommendations for boards and the C-suite.Episode 12In this episode: Wayne begins with the term “Shadow IT,” which are systems built within organizations and used without approval. He says, let’s do a little history lesson: In years past there were only mainframes. And then we had minicomputers, and they begat PCs, and people could say, “I can do stuff on this. I just need this thing on my screen.” And that turned into, “Why don’t I share that nice Excel spreadsheet with this other person?” And then that other person shared it with yet another person, and before long it gets published as one of the corporate financials.Wayne says there is a book by Fred Brooks called “The Mythical Man Month,” and it’s one of the seminal works of managing IT. Wayne says it talks about the notion that if I’m building a system for me it takes X effort. And if I’m building for other people, it takes three times that effort. By the way, Fred Brooks was the architect of the IBM System 360 software package – the biggest software product ever delivered. He says the problem with databases is they are being hit millions and millions and millions of times a day – or maybe billions if companies have an IoT situation. Organizations have machines sending machine messages, he says, and people don’t want to let end users into the database. He says it’s known colloquially as the query from hell.He says companies moving to a SaaS-based ERP, and a cloud-based ERP can get multiple benefits. Microsoft, Oracle, Salesforce, Workday, and others have what are called “data lakes,” which are structured and unstructured data.Wayne talks about “horses for courses” – if you’re changing something that touches the general ledger or is ever reported in external financials to investors or customers, you have to have a level of control. It’s not a free-for-all, and the system will magically keep you from doing a stupid thing when you’re making a calculation. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Today, we dive deeper into a topic we’ve touched on a couple times before: “technical debt.” Through some evocative metaphors, Wayne explains why it matters—and how to avoid it building up.Episode 9In this episode, Wayne and I talk about the CIO. He says the CEO gets the CIO they settled for. If the CIO can’t hit your strategic agenda, and help you become a partner, and move the business forward, you’re setting your sights to low. Don’t settle, he says, for a mediocre CIO.He says the CIO needs to get on the truck if you deliver things. Get in the warehouse if you store things. Get on the factory floor if you make things. Go on a sales call and see what happens when your salespeople get tossed out on their ear.He then goes on to say that most executives work in vertical silos – as in, I’m in charge of department A or B or C. But he says the CIOs who are effective get out of that way of thinking, and start thinking of themselves as the Chief Process Person. He tells the story of how he asked a CIO, “What do you think is your biggest accomplishment.” And the CIO said, “Oh, it’s really simple. My IT budget was 0.91% of sales, and I was able to keep it to 0.88% of sales.” Wayne says that’s just nuts – what if they had given him 0.03% of sales to focus on top line innovation, or process improvement, or customer satisfaction? I ask him is this technical debt in the financial sense of debt – or is it because you haven’t made the investments to keep up with modern technology? Wayne says it’s the latter. He says technical debt keeps you from delivering and executing on all the business strategies that leaders want and need.Wayne quotes a CEO as saying, “My Windows XP computer boots up every day, so what’s wrong?” He compares it to a P-51 Mustang fighter plane from WWII. Yes, Wayne says, you could do that – but if you go head-to-head against a Chinese MiG, who would win?
