But do they make games scarier or just frustrating? This episode, we discuss:The best & worst QTEs in horror games Until Dawn, The Dark Pictures Anthology, The Quarry, and how they use QTEs Do QTEs enhance horror, or are they just button-mashing nonsense? The future of QTE-driven horror—will they evolve or disappear?
After years of making bloody, adult, violent video games, the Danish video games developer we're talking about today decided to make something that they could play with their kids. We're going back to 2009 to look at a third-person action-adventure game featuring some small shinobi. We're talking Mini Ninjas. On this episode of Stealth Boom Boom, we take a look at the origins of Hitman developer IO Interactive and how that series influenced their family-friendly game. We also discuss the perceived target audience for this, and an animated series that reminds Adam of fake merchandise. Here are some of the things you're gonna hear us chat about in our review: memorable box art; samurai with impeccable eyesight; turning into a chicken or bear or an oddly-faced monkey; being spotted in the long grass; a discussion on whether you kids of 15 years ago liked being sneaky; being rewarded for murder and thus punished for playing stealthily; boring button-mashing combat (or something slightly different for those on Nintendo Wii); stopping time for a completely over-powered kill move; large, sparse areas of linear levels; a nice enough world to be in; Hiro's friends feel pointless; Windy Pants and their absolutely outrageous farts; repetitive QTE boss battles; a story that's merely there; and The Worst Witch. After all that, we take you through what some of the critics were saying about the game around the time it came out, and then we give you our final verdicts on whether Mini Ninjas is a Pass, a Play, or an Espionage Explosion. For those who would like to play along at home, we'll be discussing, reviewing and dissecting Rogue Warrior on the next episode of Stealth Boom Boom.IMPORTANT LINKS TO THINGS
fWotD Episode 2727: The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Tuesday, 22 October 2024 is The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes. The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes is a 2021 interactive drama and survival horror video game developed by Supermassive Games and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. It is the third game of the first season of The Dark Pictures Anthology. The game features a multilinear plot in which decisions can significantly alter the trajectory of the story and change the relationships between the five playable protagonists; some lead to their permanent deaths. House of Ashes is set during the 2003 invasion of Iraq and follows five characters—four Americans working for the US Armed Forces and one Iraqi Republican Guard—who must escape from an underground Akkadian temple and survive the vampiric creatures that infest the area. Ashley Tisdale, who plays CIA operative Rachel King, was marketed as the game's leading actress. Jason Graves, a long-time collaborator with Supermassive for the series, composed the soundtrack during COVID-19 lockdowns in the United Kingdom.Reappearing in House of Ashes are staple mechanics of The Dark Pictures Anthology, such as quick time events (QTEs), two single-player and two multiplayer modes, and collectibles that allow players to see visions of possible future events. New features include a more interactive camera system, a handheld light source for easier navigation, and three difficulty levels to manage QTEs. The films Aliens, Predator, and The Descent, as well as the H. P. Lovecraft novella At the Mountains of Madness and the myth of the Curse of Akkad were the main influences for the game. The creatures were made using motion capture and hand animation, and the temple's design was inspired by ancient Mesopotamian architecture. Military specialists and Arabic speakers were consulted to ensure a faithful depiction of the war.House of Ashes was released for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on 22 October 2021, to mixed reviews. Several critics deemed it an improvement from the previous two instalments in the anthology, and points of praise included the replay value, QTE intensity, cinematography, multiplayer modes, and likeability of the Iraqi character. Critiques were directed towards the game's pacing, scare factor, facial animations, texture and animation glitches, and handling of the Iraq War. The fourth game in the series and the season one finale, The Devil in Me, was revealed in a teaser trailer at the end of House of Ashes and released on 18 November 2022.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 13:46 UTC on Tuesday, 5 November 2024.For the full current version of the article, see The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Nicole.

Welcome to the Best Games Ever Show episode 49: The Best Game with the Worst Difficulty Spike. High difficulty is one thing. As long as it's consistent, it can be an asset. Souls games are essentially all about providing a big mountain to climb. But sometimes games have difficulty spikes that, frankly, take the proverbial Michael. Games which aren't supposed to be mountains to climb, but gentle slopes to meander along. They lull you into a false sense of security, providing a moderate challenge but nothing you can't handle as long as you're keeping your wits about you. And then you turn a corner, and some horrid boss with a billion hit points who can dodge all your attacks comes swanning in to ruin your weekend. We all have a traumatic memory of one of those. Whether it's the annoying bullet sponge guy in Alpha Protocol, General Raam at the end of Gears of War, or just any of the atrocious boss fights in Deus Ex: Human Revolution, high-powered bosses are usually the cause of such a difficulty spike. But it isn't necessarily about combat: sometimes a particularly tricky platforming section or QTE can stump you to the point where you rage quit. But which games have stumped our panellists? What has made James, Sherif, and Tom turn the console off and go to bed out of sheer of frustration? Well, to find out you'll have to watch or listen to this show. Which is handy, because if you're reading this, you're probably doing that right now. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Chris Smaje is a social scientist by training and a small-scale farmer by occupation. For the past 19 years, he has co-worked a small farm in Somerset, in southwest England. Previously, he was a university-based social scientist, working in the Department of Sociology at the University of Surry and the Dept of Anthropology at Goldsmith's College. HIs focus was aspects of social policy, social identities and the environment. Since switching focus to the practice and politics of agro-ecology, he's written for various publications, such as The Land, Dark Mountain and Permaculture Magazine, as well as academic journals such as Agroecology and Sustainable Food systems. He blogs at Small Farm Futures and has previously been a director of the Ecological Land Co-op. His latest book, A Small Farm Future, forms the basis of this conversation - in it, he lays out Ten Crises of our times, which, put together, create the Wicked Problem of this moment in history. From there, the remaining three parts of the book explore the ways in which rural localism can offer a way for humanity to see itself through the numerous crises we currently face both in the richer and poorer countries. In the podcast, we take the book as our starting point (really, you should read it) and look less at the why, of rural localism and more at the ways it might happen and how it might work. We delve into the ways humanity has organised in the past (with deep passing references to Graeber and Wengrow's brilliant book, The Dawn of Everything') and how we might self-organise in the future. We look at the future of energy, at our conceptions of prosperity, the ways small farms can feed the world - and the absolute insanity of the 'precision fermentation' model of feeding eight billion people while enabling them to flourish free of corporate capture. Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our series on Resident Evil 4. We take a little sidestep into the things that aren't mentioned in the manual, and then work through Chapter 4. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Through the end of Ch 4! Issues covered: things we didn't notice about the game, target practice, going to apparent side tracks first, extending play to try to slow trade-in, collectibles, gacha mechanics, needing to enjoy the core thing, a precursor to lootboxes, expanding to other types of players, ways to expand the mechanics, upgrading treasures, having the nagging idea that you might need to go back, hidden mechanic that extends play, adding discovery, Eastern vs Western design philosophies, misreading the thing they wanted from the El Gigantes, the dragon room, having to come back to a side room, leaving Ashley behind, the layers of history of Europe vs Japan, looking for locations and ideas that can support a lot of varied fictional, differences between systems and level design and parallels with programming, the creature that seems unkillable, being unable to read the boss' states, the Salazar bot and Salazar as an enemy (versus others), the mine car section and its tensions, failing the QTE at the end, wanting an indication that a QTE is coming, feeling unfair, Brett makes a plan, the problem with setpieces, matching expectations, insta-killed by being grabbed by a lava gigante, dropping barrels on your enemies, fighting in close quarters, being absorbed into a giant plant, jumping down to avoid QTEs, turning and running and fighting the design, Your Princess is in another castle, giving a little bit of thanks. Chris - You have a book coming out titled The CISO Evolution - Business Knowledge for Cybersecurity Executives. How critical do you think it is for CISO's to understand the business, and how do they balance their technical skills with business acumen?Nikki - I see you've posted several videos on LinkedIn - my favorite so far is the "paralysis-by-analysis" concept. We've discussed before cognitive limitations and just how much data we could actually put into our decision making when it comes to risk. Where do you think the sweet spot is with amount of data vs quality of data?Chris - You and I participated in the Qualified Technical Expert course from Bob Zukis together. Do you think we will see boards required to obtain QTE's and why do you think boards lack technical fluency now, when so much of GDP and business is tied to technology?Nikki - You spoke at the SANS Cybersecurity Leadership Summit on Translating cyber risk into business risk. What would you say are the biggest takeaways for practitioners to be able to explain and express risk properly to improve security and hopefully, lower risk across the organization?Chris - Do you think Cybersecurity is a business enabler? If so, how do we as cyber professionals help the business view Cybersecurity as an enabler and protecting of revenue?Chris - Do you have any recommendations for Cybersecurity professionals looking to transition into a CISO role in the future? Any key business books or resources to familiarize themselves with? What Does Cyber Resilient mean to you?

The Big Themes:• IBM support is a differentiator: Upstart cloud vendors are in an IaaS arms race. Legacy enterprise IT clients have been with IBM clients for 50+ years.• Board of duty of care: The board's overarching mandate is to protect shareholders over the long term. Boards have two main fiduciary duties: Loyalty and care.• Cybersecurity and obsolescence risk: What is the age of IT components vs. current – years matter less than generations.• The right CIO: The CEO gets the CIO they settle for. And CEOs should lobby for QTE—qualified technology expert—on the board. The Big Quotes:“We can't get people. We can't get stuff. We can't get network capabilities added because everybody's out of everything.”“We are now 20 months into a pandemic where we sent the office workers home. Microsoft just the other day said, ‘We're not coming back for a while.' ““So you can be a higher margin, higher stickiness, higher customer satisfaction in a company and survive for the long run.”This episode is brought to you by BMC Software.
God of War 1 y God of War 2, ambas de PS2. With the invention of the Raw with Jay series, I thought I might throw my hat in at creating a segment, I decided to go with a topic that is a demon of my own creation. The Cupboard of ShameI know that time and effort are needed to make any game, I am in no way saying each game is bad or indeed shameful... Just out of the ordinary for me to have purchased them.I will be aiming to cover one game in each segment, giving the reasons for not only buying it but also how much playtime I gave the game in question.Best to just say that I'm going to give this a go and see where it leads, so with that in mind cue the intro, please.I'm going to take you on a journey into the games that I've put into my cupboard of shame. Cutscenes, graphics, controls, and overall views of the game, as well as anything else that I can think of, will be covered.Iron Man the Movie Video Game (2008)Oh boy...So this title was released for all three formats, back in May of 2008. It's a title based on the Marvel movie of the same name and was released at the same time as the movie. Three of the film's stars used their voice's to portray the characters in the game, too.Things were looking good for this movie tie in-game.Haha... I'm back sucker... Tag me in! I'm ready coach!I thought I left you with the blogs? Great now he's got an actual voice.Anyway, so after movie tie in games like Star Wars Phantom Menace in 1999 things could only get better, right? Superior hardware, a more action-packed movie to base the game on, and the inclusion of actors from the movie itself lending their voice talents. What could go wrong?Hahahaha! Seriously do you want me to take this?Crude as ever I see. No, I'm good.Well if I start by telling you that it won an award from Gamespot for "Worst Game Everyone Played" in 2008, that should give you some sort of indication of what I'm about to cover.Box ArtWell, from the box art it looked really good: the front cover, screenshots, and info you get on the back were really enticing. The box stated that you are a "One Man Army", letting you go between ground and air combat at any time, dynamic combat on open battlefields, and that "your suit is the ultimate weapon".This had my interest peaked, and I was very excited to get the game home and bang it into my Xbox 360 for some Mech-Suit-flying-bringer-of-justice-to-the-bad-guys kind of action. They saw you coming a mile off didn't they?Cutscenes and or graphicsWith other games that I played at the launch of the Xbox 360, like Dead Rising and Gears of War, I knew full well what the console was capable cutscene-wise and was looking forward to a good movie tie in.The cutscenes were a bit flat for me and didn't really set up the story or the next level well. That did dull the experience for me from the get-go, even though I was excited to play it.Cutscene-wise I thought it was a case of shooting for the moon kinda thing. And missing it by ramming into Mars! Next stop, The Nebula cluster, it boasts a prime holiday destination as well as the cleanest fuel sources in the known galaxy!I'm not going to be that harsh myself, but after playing the already mentioned Gears of War I was disappointed; albeit only slightly.I knew that I had played games in the past where the graphics and in-game cutscenes were lacking but made up for it in gameplay. So onward I marched towards the gameplay.ControlsEver feel like you needed three hands to play a game that WASN'T on the N64?I can share part of that. With having played third-person action games and flying games before, I thought the gameplay, combat, and controls were going to be easy to pick up and I could get to the Justice bringing already. It was going to be a fair few years until, for example, the simple flying controls - like those in games like Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 - were more of a standard of sorts.Iron Man's controls were hard to use and after a few hours of gameplay, seemed like a chore to get used to.Chore!? Try this... Every wondered what battling a bag full of badgers while dangling off a cliff in a high wind was like? Well, now you do.I don't think they were outright terrible though. For what they were, they worked. They weren't game-breaking controls, and with enough patience, I figured out how to get places and started blasting things as a One Man Army.It just seemed, at the time, like a steep learning curve. At the same time, I was trying to battle with the controls, and not fly straight into trees, or headfirst into the ground.Twin-stick flight controls with the two left shoulder buttons for flying forward and altitude control, up close QTE button-bashing bits and fast incoming projectiles on the first flight mission alone made it hard to concentrate on what was going on let alone surviving. And on top of that all that, I had rockets and bullets to dodge. This leads me nicely to the next point:CombatWith main missions and submissions being standard throughout this game, unlockable suits with different strengths are a nice touch.Wow different skins and a slightly better bang-bang-shooter for quicker kills! The combat flows well enough to keep people engaged. And for the time, zipping through city and desert landscapes was a big deal. Indeed the big open battlefields had lots of detail to them.But...Come on, rip it apart! After the initial training levels are done, with me bouncing off everything in sight, the game starts proper. And here's the thing, the game started to lose its shine for me when the missions started. You have to dodge missiles and fly from one end of the map to the other to get different mission points. And that was followed by what could sometimes be lengthy boss battles that made the game lose its shine for me.OverallCome on get your claws outMy claws are staying firmly in, thank you.I think like a few other games that I have played in the past, this title was very ambitious and tried to bring a whole bunch of gameplay mechanics to the table, in one big melting pot. Clearly, they hoped to produce something that would tie into the movie quite nicely. For my money it had good points to it: it did try to melt a lot of things and push what could be expected for movie video game tie-ins.But I do think I suffered from a case of trying too hard with too many things. With enemies being both mid-air and ground-based, all shooting at the One Man Army at the same time, was a bit much to take in some times.Long flying sequences, overwhelming fight sections at times, and having to wrestle with the controls as well as the camera sensitivity. On top of this, the game kept crashing out for me, which hindered my progress through the game. Leading me to only having played about six missions before sticking on the shelf - one that would later turn into The Cupboard of Shame.Didn't realise you struggled so much with it!So to answer the question I asked at the beginning: why did I buy this game?I had just gone to see Iron Man at the cinema and with the knowledge of how good the graphics, gameplay and cutscenes were at the time for Xbox 360 games, I thought this game could finally get rid of the bad taste a lot of people had with movie tie in games. It seemed to me that including too many factors, not polishing up the gameplay, and the controls were the wedge that stopped me from completing the game. You gonna go back and complete it someday then? Or are you going to leave it in the cupboard of shame not completed Mr I-love-retro-games-man?I'm not saying no. I would try and get it on maybe the PS3 because I don't want to have my Xbox 360 red ring on me any time soon. So a different format would be a must.I am hoping to do more of these segments, with the help of my fabulous assistant of courseYou can do sarcasm as well, I see!So until next timeStay safe, stay awesome, and keep in mind that no game is safe from The Cupboard of Shame.Peace out---Did you ever play the Iron Man game from 2008? If so, what did you think of it? Where Squidge's negative points justified? Which games would you put in The Cupboard of Shame? The last week in our beloved gaming industry has been interesting, and of course we're going to delve into all the news that's fit to print (well, say) here on Sacred Symbols. Many, many people wrote in to ask us about IGN, Israel and Palestine, and the general drama surrounding all of that -- and we oblige, complete with timestamps so you can skip the politics at your leisure -- but the core of this week's episode has much more to do with PlayStation itself. Returnal isn't selling well, but it's growing on us (and audiences) a great deal, and Housemarque seems to be primed to keep running forward if a recent interview is any exception. Meanwhile, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart has gone gold while The Last of Us: Part II is finally running at 60 on PS5. Plus: Hades is coming to PS4, TimeSplitters is being revived, AT&T is splitting WBIE up after all, and much more. Then: Listener inquiries! Can we please stop talking about game pricing? Is it time to kill the QTE once and for all? How should Square Enix celebrate Dragon Quest's 35th birthday? Has Colin turned Red? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This week was Andrew's pick, and he picked Super Massive's game Man of Medan. Can you keep your survivors alive in this horror narrative filled with spooky ghost and horrifying QTE's? Survive the horror by yourself or grab a couple of friends and play it together. Try not to have anyone killed but It's okay if they all die though according to Keith.

This is it. Halloween. Hallow's Evening. All Hallow's Eve. Samhain. Parentalia. No matter what you call it, it's time for the dead to come back to life and feast on our flesh. So gather up your torches and pitchforks and see how many waves you can get through in one life. I hear if you get through 50 waves you unlock the Headless Horseman costume and:* Fallout 1st* Upselling* Bad Candy* Halloween HatersBethesda. What are you doing. We know you're greedy, I mean, you were the ones who started the microtransaction craze with Horse Armor. But at least try to do it competently. Charging a monthly subscription fee in this day and age is ludicrous already, but filling it with bugs as well? I guess we shouldn't be surprised. I'm sure Todd Howard is actually just a sentient swarm of insects in a human flesh bag.I see you're listening to Here's What I Don't Get. Could I also interest you in some nice D-cell batteries or a warranty plan for your episode? It's like a bad final boss in a video game. You've battled through aisle and aisle of braindead customers and sale prices, you get to the end boss, and it turns out to be a QTE button mash. It's why Amazon is king. Not because they don't upsell, that's all they do really, but because I can't click X on the cashier's forehead. So, you've got immediate eaters, then your second-favorites that you add to your lunch box. Then you've got "trade quality" candy, that, sure you'll eat em, but really you wanna trade them up for something you like more than someone else. Then you;ve got your last days of candy. It's almost Thanksgiving by now and you're really hoping something got skipped by. Then there's the bottom of the bag, giveaway never eat pieces of candy. That's what these are. I don't even want to see them in someone else's bag of candy.Fundamentalist Christians. Squeemish prudes. PTSD almost slasher victims. Cranky party poopers. There's people all 'round the world that like to take a big double-tapered chocolate yogurt emoji on the king of Holidays, Halloween. It's so multi-faceted it's hard to hate but somehow these people find out how to do it. Don;t like scary movies? Don't watch em! Enjoy the costumes and candy and pumpkins. There's so many parts to Halloween, you can pick and choose! Make it your own! The modular holiday! All this and more on this week's CREEPY episode. Once Upon a Time In Hollywood : Dernier film de Tarantino.
“Wayne Sadin on Digital Strategy” episodes explore the fast-changing and high-stakes world of digital business. We focus in particular on what CEOs and boards must do to lead their companies successfully into the Digital Age. Today, we talk frankly about the recent Capital One data breach, whether AWS bears any responsibility for it, and how companies of all sizes should be thinking about security and the cloud.Episode 8In this episode Wayne and I discuss technical debt. I ask him is this technical debt in the financial sense of debt – or is it because you haven’t made the investments to keep up with modern technology? Wayne says it’s the latter. He says technical debt keeps you from delivering and executing on all the business strategies that leaders want and need.Wayne quotes a CEO as saying, “My Windows XP computer boots up every day, so what’s wrong?” He compares it to a P-51 Mustang fighter plane from WWII. Yes, Wayne says, you could do that – but if you go head-to-head against a Chinese MiG, who would win? Hackers, he says, are flying MiGs.Wayne goes on to say that Russell Reynolds coined the term “QTE,” which stands for qualified technology executive – an individual possessing a high degree of current technology-relevant domain experience. It was modeled after the Sarbanes-Oxley QFE – a qualified financial expert. Finally, he puts a plug in for the Digital Directors Network run by Bob Zuckis at USC. Membership is free for board-qualified technology and cybersecurity experts and corporate directors who want to develop their digital diversity skills in the corporate boardroom. This week Fred is joined by Eric from the Everyday Gamers to discuss the history of the Quick Time Event or QTE. They go all the way back to the origins of the genre, the games that led into today's definition, and some of their favorites.
As you probably know, 69 is the sex number. So this week, Tom and Ryan talk about sex in video games. Boob physics, QTE sex scenes, and Sonya Blade's thong. This episode is too sexy.

We curse how badly Microsoft has bungled D4, wonder how QTE final boss fights exist in 2014, explain how yet another developer was chased out of their home this weekend, and answer your questions.
Hey there, Julian here. Yeah, I'm not your usual Backloggers Anonymous host, but we're tackling a game that I have a really huge soft spot for: Asura's Wrath. We are joined by Nerds Without Pants fan favorite Erika Szabo who takes her place as our resident anime expert. This is important, because Asura's Wrath is a huge, mushy love letter to Japanese animation, which you can read all about in my review. We spend the first part of the show talking about our personal history with anime, as well as some of our all-time favorite shows. After that, we delve into the topic of the dreaded Quick Time Event (or QTE if you're funky). This is also a big deal, as Asura's Wrath is almost entirely QTE based. Opinions vary among the three of us, but I do a pretty good job of getting Angelo and Erika excited for this play through. Finally, we wrap up with some talk on DLC (this game had a "huge" controversy concerning its DLC), and some favorite anime recommendations. This game is quite a trip, and I hope you'll join us. If you do, play through the first 9 episodes. That should take you about 2-3 hours, and then get ready for part 2 of the show, where we talk about the insanity thus far!
