63. Alex Chapman, Allergan Aesthetics | The Control Paradox for CXOs

Your Digital Reputation

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 10, 2026 34:05

For leaders in high-trust sectors, control has long felt like safety. Control the message, control the narrative, control how you show up, and nothing can go wrong. But, as Alex Chapman explains in this episode, that instinct is now quietly doing the opposite of what was intended - particularly in our digital world - and executives risk being caught out.Alex is Head of Communications for Europe and Canada at Allergan Aesthetics, and has spent his career advising executives on reputation in some of the most heavily governed environments, including global pharmaceuticals, the public sector, and as an experienced press secretary in Australian politics. He has held senior regional and international communications roles, including at one of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies, where he focused on media and reputation across more than 190 international markets. His assessment of communications, reputation and "control" has led to a memorable metaphor: as he describes it, managing a leader's voice today is like "strangling water" - the harder you grab, the less you actually hold. His reframe is subtle but powerful. The problem isn't control itself; it's what leaders and comms professionals try to control. As he discusses in conversation with host Roger Christie, it's time for organisations to stop controlling the outputs (the words, the script, the message) and start controlling the inputs (the preparation, the guardrails, and - above all - a genuine understanding of the leader and their passions). Because the more something feels managed, the harder it is to believe.Alex unpacks why digital has compressed the news cycle from a day to five minutes, how advisers can best push leaders forward rather than away, and how the most effective shifts happen like a dimmer, not a light switch. He shares the story of a leader who went from a deactivated LinkedIn and a fear of cameras to "hungry to engage" in under two months, and exactly what made that transition possible.Tune in for a practical, refreshingly human take on why trust is built by participating (not performing), and why letting go of control is exactly how leaders can earn it today.TIMESTAMPS:00:02:26 – From Sydney to Switzerland: Alex's reputation career00:03:30 – Why "control = safety" took hold in regulated sectors00:07:00 – The point where control starts to erode trust00:08:50 – "You can't script a good conversation"00:11:30 – The commercial case that changes a leader's mind00:17:20 – Signals vs behaviours, and the permanent digital record00:19:30 – Control the inputs, not the outputs00:28:00 – Two leaders, two very different journeysSUBSCRIBE FOR REGULAR INSIGHTSTo sign up to Roger Christie's regular newsletter, head to: https://www.propelgroup.com.au/subscribeCONNECT WITH ROGER CHRISTIEHave a question, feedback or want to connect with Roger? Today we're talking about a situation that comes up sometimes in leadership coaching engagements - a newly appointed leader who inherits an existing team and then struggles to establish credibility. This is one of the reasons organisations bring me in as a leadership coach. On paper, promoting this person to leader makes sense. The leader is capable, experienced, technically strong, maybe high-performing in previous roles. But then they step into a new leadership position with an inherited team… and things start to wobble.Maybe the team doesn't fully buy in. Momentum slows. Relationships become strained. The leader starts second-guessing themselves. In today's episode we are exploring why this transition can be so hard and how coaching can help the leader build engagement and thrive.Rebecca, on taking a step back in the first few days and weeks of your new leadership role: "What makes it particularly difficult is that many new leaders think they need to prove themselves quickly. So they overcompensate. They move too fast. And they try to establish authority before establishing trust."Links:Get a copy of Rebecca's 7 Strategic Shifts to Position You as a High-Impact LeaderBook a free 15 minute Career Strategy call with Rebecca to get your career off to a fresh start. Today I had the privilege of interviewing Nicole Yade, CEO of WAGEC (Women and Girls' Emergency Centres) established to support women and their children, seeking support from situations of domestic violence. Australia continues to struggle with a national crisis in terms of violence against women with 1 in 4 women having experienced violence from an intimate partner since the age of 15 and nearly 9 in 10 hospitalisations for assault by a partner – were for females (Source: AIHW).Today, Nicole Yade is sharing insight from her diverse role as CEO at WAGEC and how she needs a multitude of skills to adapt to lots of different stakeholders including individual women and their children; communicating with Ministers; and meeting with people with inter-generational wealth who want to invest their money into an NGO such as WAGEC. We also talk about the misconception that NGOs struggle to attract the best talent... and the kinds of people who do well in NGOs.Nicole, on NGOs attracting the best talent: "One of my pet peeves... is hearing the idea that if you were really good at your job you'd be working for government or in a corporate setting. But for me, nothing could be further from the truth. What I see everyday at WAGEC, I see people [in our team] who are really good at their jobs, with incredible heart and soul and professionalism and adding wisdom to some of the most complex problems in our community."Links:Connect with Nicole and the work of WAGEC at www.wagec.org.auConnect with Nicole Yade on LinkedinInstagram follow Nicole Yade (@nicoleyadee)Connect with Rebecca Allen on LinkedinGet your copy of Rebecca's free guide, 7 Strategic Shifts to Position You as a High-Impact LeaderRate, Review, & Follow our Show on Apple Podcasts:Also, if you haven't done so already, follow the podcast. If you're interested in being an effective leader that means also investing in understanding your own blind spots. In this ep, I am talking about 3 common blind spots that hold leaders back.Technically blind spots are beliefs, attitudes and behaviours that you are unaware of. In actual fact you might be aware of them, but to date haven't wanted to acknowledge them, or haven't known how to address them. Leading without addressing your blind spots can cause all sorts of problems:You might be unaware of your impact on individualsYou might be allowing negative behaviours to persist (in you and others)Those patterns might be eroding trust in your leadershipAnd those patterns might also be negatively impacting your credibility and reputationWorking on blind spots isn't a nice-to-have - it's absolutely mission critical.Rebecca, on being more aware of your actions: "We talk a lot in my business about observable behaviors. What observable behaviors are influencing how other people experience and see you ? Do you have patterns where you repeatedly tolerate poor behaviours yourself? Do you have an avoidance pattern for example? It's important to differentiate between - and be aware of - your intentions and your actual patterns of behaviour."Links:Book your 90-minute Leadership Reality Check session with Rebecca right away! In aerospace and defense, a structural shift in global manufacturing is underway. Supply chains are strained, skilled labor is scarce, and production backlogs are testing relationships between OEMs and suppliers across the globe. So the industry is being forced to look for answers in new places. One of those places is India.  What started as an engineering and software hub is rapidly becoming something much larger.  A manufacturing powerhouse capable of delivering aerospace-grade quality, advanced digital operations, and the scale required to support global demand. In this highlight episode, I revisit my conversation with the co-founder and CEO of Jeh Aerospace, Vishal Sanghavi.  He explains why major suppliers are moving work to India, how credibility is earned with Western customers, and why the opportunity ahead is bigger than a simple cost advantage. You'll also learn: Why labor shortages in the U.S. are accelerating permanent shifts in manufacturing geography How pairing India's talent base with modern digital infrastructure changes what suppliers can deliver What it takes to overcome skepticism and prove reliability to Western aerospace customers Why the companies that win will think beyond arbitrage and build technology leverage How India's momentum could reshape the global supplier map for decades Why, with market demand, policy movement, and geopolitics aligning, the window of opportunity is now   About the Guest Vishal R.
