Send us a textIn this Episode I interview, Whapio Diane Bartlett. For over 40 years, Whapio has been a pioneer in the world of midwifery and birthkeeping, redefining how we understand and approach birth since 1985. As an Elder Midwife, educator, and mentor, Whapio has devoted her life to raising the consciousness of birth and transforming how families, caregivers, and communities honor this sacred process. She is one of my most cherished mentors, in this conversation we dive into the realms of what Whapio refers to as Quantum Birth, and some of her own journey of entering midwifery and becoming a mother herself. Whapio speaks to the naturally psychedelic qualities of pregnancy, birth and postpartum, the expanded state of being that this time brings, the brainwave shifts, and the consciousness altering journey. This is what Mama Psychedelia is all about. In 2001, Whapio founded The Matrona, an organization dedicated to providing affordable, accessible midwifery education to aspiring doulas, midwives and birthkeepers around the world. Through programs such as the Holistic Doula Training, The Illuminated Wise Woman, and the Birthkeepers Midwifery Cohort, Whapio has created a space for transformative learning that honors the art and science of birth while weaving in the essential elements of consciousness, spirituality, and wisdomkeeping.Whapio speaks passionately about the role of consciousness in caregiving and birth, believing it to be the missing element that could revolutionize maternal care and return the power of birth to families. As she often says, “The way we give birth is a mirror of the emotional and spiritual maturity on this planet. If we prioritize consciousness in birth, we will transform not only the experience of birth but the very fabric of how we live and relate to each other.”Through The Matrona's programs, Whapio offers a unique and holistic perspective on birth, blending practical skills with quantum midwifery, homeopathy, and ancient wisdomkeeping. Through The Matrona's programs, Whapio offers a unique and holistic perspective on birth, blending practical skills with quantum midwifery, homeopathy, and ancient wisdomkeeping. The Birthkeepers Midwifery Cohort, starting February 1st, is a year-long journey of discovery and transformation. This program consists of 10 comprehensive modules that guide participants through all aspects of midwifery, from pregnancy to postpartum. With a focus on the four pillars of learning: Anatomy and Physiology, Quantum Midwifery in Practice, Homeopathy and Wisdomkeeping—this program equips birthkeepers with both the knowledge and the intuitive skills to elevate their practice.Whapio's teachings are rooted in a profound belief that birth is a portal to transformation. She says, “If we understood the magnitude of birth as a gateway to transformation, everything in the world would change. Birth is the blueprint through which we can heal the planet and evolve as a species.”Whether you are an aspiring doula, midwife, a seasoned birthworker, or someone seeking a deeper understanding of the power of birth, The Matrona's Birthkeepers Midwifery Program offers an opportunity to learn from one of the most passionate and wise voices in holistic birth education.Join Whapio on February 1st to begin your journey into the heart of Birthkeeping. In this bonus conversation, Whapio Diane Bartlett, a birth expert with over 40 years of experience, joins my partner, Kendra Adachi, and me to discuss our upcoming birthing experience. Whapio discusses the need for deeply connected women who can provide support and reassurance without interfering in the birthing process. She also highlights the shift towards women and families wanting their own birth experience and the desire for mentoring rather than management. The conversation explores the importance of honoring the natural process of birth and the role of the father as an advocate and supporter. It underscores the sacredness and wisdom of the birthing experience and the need to trust the body's instincts, touching on the emotional challenges and doubts that arise during pregnancy. Overall, this chat provides reassurance, wisdom, and guidance for our upcoming birth and initiation into parenthood. Whapio has been an independent midwife and educator since 1985. In 2001, she founded The Matrona, an online portal providing entry-level holistic education for midwives, doulas, and birth attendants. In this episode of The Mama Psychedelia Podcast, I interview Jess Shine.Jess is mother, wife, life lover, farmer, birthkeeper, village wise woman, adventurer, and dreamer. Life has led her to her latest big leap: her 50 acre family homestead in Northern Idaho where she is dedicated to making their place on this earth better for the next generation. She says “I'll die satisfied knowing that I made the world a better place, even if it's just for my 3 littles.” They've got a a whole farm, milk cows, chickens, sheep, alpaca, mini donkeys, llamas, peacock, guinea hens, turkeys, cats, and, of course, dogs. Jess found a 10 year career in the hospital as a labor and delivery nurse abruptly dissolved a few years back. She was a nurse, a good one, and then overnight wasn't — fired for following the law of informed consent and not checking a mother's cervix when the mom told her she couldn't. Seeing the hospital thru the view of policymakers changed the way she saw her work, and losing the career she built up over a decade rocked her to her core. She went from a really hard, exhausting, inflammation and stress causing job to village wise woman. She learned how to help others heal by healing herself, and sharing her findings through herbalism and homeopathy. Add in mindfulness practices, plenty of fresh air and sunshine, remove the toxins as best as one can, and top it all off with love. Jess Shine shows up as a companion for the births to which she's called as a witness and a guide. She teaches natural healing and home health classes, and hosts free calls on zoom to help mothers find peace with their births and unwind their stories. Jess recently launched a program to help birth attendants and families understand the ins and outs of the hospital. She is also the director of programs at the Matrona, the school founded by Jess and I's elder teacher Whapio, and a true blessing to this world. In this episode together we explore the concept of mothering the mother: caring for mothers in our own community through pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and beyond — & equally important — nourishing the great Mother Earth. Get ready because this is one of my favorite topics of all time. Consider this episode a mini crash course in birth, discussing things like what triggers labor to begin, and how it all starts, what exactly is happening inside your body and with your important labor hormones, and how we can use this understanding to “bio hack” your birth experience to support positive outcomes. We discuss the types of things that can cause birth to stall out, why contractions hurt and how to reduce that pain, and the INCREDIBLE things that happen inside your baby's body when they take their first breath. In this episode of The Mama Psychedelia Podcast, I talk with Jamie Satori, together we dive deep into the realms of Quantum Birth keeping, birth being the blueprint of all things, and birth as transformation. Jamie came to Doula work after her own traumatic birth 13 years ago, which later led to 3 redemptive empowered births, the 4th being a self directed birth here in Costa Rica. Her first birth ushered her onto this path of midwifery and mama hood. Moving to Costa Rica supported her in healing from the rat race of the West and her own history of addiction and substance reliance. We together share how we first connected and our early journey of working alongside each other. We touch on how the brainwaves of a birthing being move through them, oxytocin and ecstasy, and the altered state that is birth and death (death being the cervix to the next universe.) We also explore how birth is inherently a spiritual act of essence coming into physicality and Jamie's own childhood connection to the sacred and how children are highly tapped into the intuitive realms and magic. We talk about supporting the rite of passage for the non-birthing parent and how important their role is on the journey of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum of a new life, and how as birth workers we can support sovereign family led birth and follow the family's lead and to trust their inner knowing. Jamie is a mama to four and community midwife serving in Costa Rica's southern zone. Borderless Birth is her beloved brain baby and the container that holds her soul work. She is in her eighth year serving at the gateways of birth and death, and passions include the movement towards re-humanization and reclamation of being born, birthing and dying. Following the Quantum Midwifery way (as taught by Whapio of the Matrona), Jamie believes and teaches peak human experiences as altered states of consciousness deserving of ceremony and respect.Where you can find Jamie Satori : Website: www.borderlessbirth.comIG: @borderlessbirthResources: -Melinda Smyth https://www.alignable.com/jacksonville-fl/ceo-cake-with-melynda-smith-Sarah Kerr https://sacreddeathcare.com/about/-https://birthbreathanddeath.com/Your Host Mackenzie's offerings: https://snipfeed.co/hunnywombIG: @mamapsychedelia@hunnywombdoula Intro Music "Waters of the Earth" by Satori covered by me, Mackenzie.(For more of her music, check out her Spotify)
With strict and sometimes oppressive licensing and regulatory requirements, the average midwife has to prioritize maintaining their license over the experience of the birthing person. Today I am so grateful to introduce you to Whapio Bartlett. Whapio has been an Independent Midwife for over 30 years, attending women and families in birth and educating women in the Arts of Midwifery and Healing. She also teaches Homeopathy and is affiliated with HANA (Hahnemann Academy of North America). She speaks and frequently writes about Quantum Midwifery and Returning Birth to the Family. In our conversation, we explore what it means to be a wisdom keeper, her wise woman midwifery care model, and how you can become a birthkeeper who meets the educational standards while maintaining the integrity of what it means to be a person attending to birth. Welcome to this quick update about the podcast. It's been a couple years since I started this podcast to create a space for sharing ideas about birth that were a little unconventional. While it has been a journey so far, I have recently been feeling called to rebrand this podcast to something that resonates more specifically with the range of concepts I talk about here, and I was struck with some inspiration for that, so what was the Journey to Homebirth podcast is now the Unschooled Homebirth podcast. Why unschooled? Well, I am anything but untrained in birth at this point, having completed a birth educator certification, holistic doula certification, a year long intensive birthkeeper and family advocate training with the amazing Whapio of the Matrona, and countless prenatal acupuncture courses and working with families for nearly 15 years, so unschooled isn't in regard to the information provided here. The spirit I'm trying to capture is that birth isn't about following textbooks, it's not about following science or evidence, those are all good things, but there's something so much deeper, fundamental truths that science can't yet explain, but are even more valid than science when it comes to the natural facts of birth.I'm hoping this change will reflect that this podcast isn't about the regular birth stuff, there's already great podcasts for that, so you won't hear an entire episode here dedicated to natural methods of induction, because instead I talk about how we need to harmonize with nature's cycle to understand timing of labor and how to take cues from nature about induction if it's needed. You won't hear an entire episode dedicated to best postpartum practices, because instead I talk about the heart connection and the importance of the West guiding energetic of Earth energy you are developing with your baby during this time and the sacredness of that time. This podcast isn't about quick tips that only work for half the moms, instead it's a way to unschool yourself from the mainstream information so you can be open to exploring your own unique experience through the lens of nature, nature that is true for all of us, not just some of us. My sources are philosophy, spirituality, life and cultural studies, which comes across as unconventional methods, but in the years I've been doing this, it's these methods that have provided my clients the opportunity to experience the most profound births and develop deep bonds in their families as they expand into greater versions of themselves by doing the deep work that comes with the transformation of each pregnancy and birth. This doesn't come from learning the same old birth information.Initially, I taught the same old stuff as I was taught in my educator courses, the same stuff everyone is teaching, and it was mostly luck whether a family had a good outcome or not, but that wasn't good enough for me. So I stopped teaching until I uncovered the deep truths that I found through ancient philosophy, things I found in Chinese medicine using the Yi Jing and the Dao De Jing, and the Huai Nan Zi, and then adding in more Earth and Universe based philosophies through ancient Druid and Celtic philosophies, the Cycles of the Year and the connections of human beings with nature. And when I finally understood this, and entire philosophy of birth and the birth cycle emerged, and this is what I knew I was here to teach. Don't Miss Circle Magic for Homebirth, a mini birth course

Hey beautiful beings, thank you for listening to another Daydreaming Wolves episode, you are so appreciated! In this interview I spoke to Marissa of Cyclical Body about body fluency, cyclical self-care and embodiment - as you know all things I am curiously exploring at the moment. I am working with Marissa and am in her membership program, so it feels really exciting to share just a few of the things I am learning from her with you today. Here is some of what we talked about: - Living in deeper harmony with our bodies - Our menstrual cycles as teachers - Finding more inclusive, authentic and open language around our bodies - Learning to really listen and following our stories - Shifting out of seeing our bodies as enemies - Finding gateways of embodied exploration Here is what Marissa says about her work: I offer menstrual cycle education and holistic womb wellness guidance from an earth & body based perspective. My entrance into this work comes through birth work, studying with Whapio of the Matrona and Rachelle Garcia Seliga of Innate Traditions Postpartum. I was led to this path particularly through the ancestral elements of womb work, and at some point fell in love with the menstrual cycle and it’s been my teacher ever since. In the last year I have deepened into pelvic work through studying Holistic Pelvic Care with Tami Kent. I’m endlessly amazed by the wisdom of our bodies and the creative resilience moving through us. I am deeply informed by all the plant friends that have graciously found me on my path, as well as the territories that i’ve been held by – san diego, occupied kumeyaay land and recently lyons, colorado, occupied ute land. You can learn more about her here: https://cyclicalbody.com/ And this is her instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cyclicalbody/ :: About me and the Daydreaming Wolves podcast :: My name is Yarrow - I am a queer writer, body worker, web designer and comforter. On Daydreaming Wolves you’ll find a mix of deep dive conversations with beautiful people who are exploring things that feel good and solo episodes in which I am sharing how to guides and magical food for thought with you. I enjoy bringing people together into a community that loves to play with plants, writes together and creates everyday rituals to make life feel more beautiful. My program, Embodied Magic is an affordable and well-curated monthly course and community. It celebrates weirdness and explores ways in which self-care can help us reclaim joyful and sustainable forms of resistance. It's available to all Patrons and you can learn more here: http://www.daydreamingwolves.com/wild-embodiment/ I am not on social media anymore because I want to focus on creating indy media like my podcasts, compare myself less often and spent little time on my phone. This means I have more energy to nurture my communities and make cool things for you! It’s extremely common for pushing stages to be managed, with laboring people reclining on their backs and being told to grab behind their knees and pull them open towards their ears, while tucking their chins, and holding their breath for a count of 10. Is this really the best way? Does it support physiology? And what effect does it have on the baby, and on the perineum that’s receiving the brunt of that exertion? The fabulous Whapio is here to tell us more. Check it out. We try to make birth practical by measuring, overseeing and monitoring it, when really, it’s an experience that flows seamlessly from one stage to another, taking the birthing woman deep into laborland. How can we better describe what she goes through? Whapio describes the holistic stages of birth and tells us more. In this second episode of a 2 part series, we go deeper into laborland, to then finally emerge during immediate postpartum and life as a family. Last week, in Part 1, we started with embarking into labor, and got as far as just past what is usually considered as transition. Go back and listen to that episode first, if you haven’t already.
