Thinking about birth when you are currently pregnant can bring up a lot of emotions. The main ones are excitement and impatience to meet your new baby, as well as anxiety and fear about the unknown of childbirth. With more people (in the United States) choosing to give birth in a hospital, families wonder what they can do to have a great hospital birth. There are a lot of things you can do during pregnancy to prepare for a positive experience, and we are chatting all about it with our guest Adriana Lozada. Who is Adriana Lozada? Adriana Lozada is a certified advanced birth doula, childbirth & postpartum educator, engaging international speaker, bestselling author, and host of the acclaimed Birthful podcast. Venezuelan-born, Adriana's background is a multi-layered and multi-cultural bundle of experiences from her time living around various continents and the Caribbean. A former co-founder and CCO of Spanish language youth media companies, the birth of her daughter sparked her passion for perinatal work. As a speaker and birth advocate, Adriana is passionate about helping people understand and support the physiological processes happening in their bodies, so they can confidently show up for their births. What Did We Discuss? In this episode, we chat with Adriana about how to prepare for a great hospital birth. We discuss everything from supporting your physiology to how to better plan for a wonderful labor and birth. Here are several of the questions that we covered in our conversation: Could you explain to us in your own words what a doula does and how they support expecting parents during childbirth? What are the main benefits of having a doula present during labor and delivery, particularly in a hospital setting? How can expecting parents best prepare themselves physically and mentally for a hospital birth? Can you talk about physiology and the role it plays in birth? How do you believe partners can best support the birthing person during labor, especially in a hospital environment? What resources do you recommend for parents exploring their birthing options? What advice would you give to expecting parents who want to ensure they have a positive and empowering hospital birth experience? Adriana has been in the perinatal and birthing space for almost 20 years. We are so grateful she joined us today and shared her wealth of knowledge with us on this episode. In this episode, Adriana Lozada of the Birthful podcast joins us to jam out on all things physiological pregnancy prep and birth support. What does the term “physiological birth” even mean? How do our minds influence our physiology? How do chemicals influence our physiology? And, what is considered an intervention. Does more technology equal a “safer” birth? Is a home birth the only way to have a physiological birth? And, what is the role of the doula in supporting a physiological birth? Statistics show having a doula in the birthing space improves birth outcomes. What is the superpower that doulas specifically bring to the birth?Adriana talks about her own birth. She mentions how it went well ‘on paper', but it was not the experience she desired. She talks about the importance of internal work i.e the mindset along with the external work. Everything else we do will not help if we are not equipped with the mental tools we need to have a safe and calm birth. In addition, we discuss the importance of hormones. Especially unhindered flow of the oxytocin in labor and how the modern day birthing environment is inhibiting it. We discuss inhibitors such as the pressure of giving birth on or before the due date, continuous electronic fetal monitoring during labor for low risk birthers, and the importance of surrendering to your intuition for physiological birth. In this episode Adriana really breaks it down into actionable ways we, as birth workers and families, work towards getting the pregnancy, birth and recovery desired. "You breathe. You blink. You digest. You don't tell your body to do those things... Your body will know how to give birth. The mind-body connection is SO STRONG. The mind can influence the body..." A.L. Adriana Lozada's background is multi-layered and multi-cultural. A former print and online editor from Venezuela, the birth of her daughter sparked her passion for being a birth advocate, leading her to open Birthful: a company that helps new and expectant parents take on whatever maternity sends their way. She is a certified Advanced Birth Doula (DONA International), a postpartum educator, and a healthy sleep consultant, as well as a bestselling author and international speaker. Adriana is also the host of the Birthful Podcast, where she talks to amazing, knowledgeable, and passionate birth professionals every week, to help new and expectant parents inform their intuition, so they can have more rewarding pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experiences. "After giving birth, Adriana became passionate about helping others on their maternity journeys. The fire to make a difference started from a place of outrage (have you noticed the broken state of maternity care? the non-existence of paid family leave in the US?), which she has since focused into a torch that lights her way towards supporting new parents to have joyful and satisfying birth and postpartum experiences. Adriana is an advanced birth doula, an eco-maternity consultant, a postpartum educator, and a child sleep consultant. She's a bestselling author, speaker, and host of the acclaimed Birthful podcast. All part of her quest to help people have a smoother transition into parenthood." The BirthCircle | Birth, Pregnancy, & PostPartum Conversations
Today we talk to Adriana Lozada, advanced birth doula, postpartum educator, child sleep consultant, and host of the Birthful Podcast. In her work she focuses on helping clients to trust in their body's natural birthing instinct without allowing fear and overthinking to complicate the process. We discuss Adriana's call to birth work after her first birth experience made her realize that birth is a lot more complicated and messy than most people understand, and that it takes much more than a proactive brain to create a positive experience. We also talk about her journey to discovering how birth can be better approached to support the physiology of it and do so without fear so the body can do its job. We talk about the process of shutting off the 'thinking' brain and learning to trust the instinctive brain during labor so that your body can carry out its natural process. We talk about the way that medical measurements (checking of dilation, etc…) can be a mental and emotional distraction from the natural process, and how to overcome that. We also talk about which things 'activate' the thinking brain and how knowing what might distract you gives you power. We discuss some of the natural physiological reflexes that both the birthing person and the baby have that allows for birth to flow in a certain way. We also talk about the chemical responses that happen in birth to support the process of birth and aid the baby's vital responses during and after birth. We discuss the ways that medical interventions might interfere with this process, but also how some natural birth moments can be recreated after the fact. Finally, we briefly talk about Adriana's Venezuelan roots, and the way that birth has been over-medicalized in Latin America and the way it is affecting the birth culture in those areas. We discuss the way that Venezuela's culture around plastic surgery creates less fear around C-Sections than around the natural birthing process. We briefly discuss birth revolutions happening in some places in Latin America that are helping people to reclaim the birth process. Adriana Lozada is an advanced birth doula, a postpartum educator, child sleep consultant, and creator/host of the Birthful podcast. The most impactful learning experience for her regarding birthwork was from her own. She graciously shared her birth story as she welcomed her daughter for the first time. Adriana did not venture into birth work until after she gave birth herself. She started self-educating as she prepared for pregnancy, and books were her primary source of knowledge. She found that as she and her husband were living on a sailboat, they would need to make changes to create stability due to challenging weather conditions of sailing. Adriana knew that she had book knowledge but had no deep-rooted village and lacked “heart knowledge.” Adriana and her husband hired a midwife to support their planned homebirth but still regret not having invited more people to support them through labor and postpartum.Labor started at 41 weeks as Adriana and her daughter held their own “secret” that would be the beginning of her birth. She managed to labor at home all day long as her family supported her. Upon arrival at the hospital, Adriana discovered that she was not as far progressed as she thought. Adriana tried various labor positions until she landed on a stool, which allowed her body to do the work. Pushing for 2 hours left her exhausted, and she found herself birthing with her brain and not her body. Her baby girl was born as she yelled her out and garnered her anger to propel her body to complete the task.Adriana's postpartum was complicated by having visiting family who she treated as guests instead of her support. These feelings were paired with a perceived judgment of how she was managing herself. Breastfeeding was an additional stressor as her daughter had a lip tie. The challenges with the lip tie to a three-month challenge that led to exclusive pumping for six months. Releasing herself from chasing achievement opened space for her to “allow.”We found ourselves sitting at the feet of a veteran birth worker who has managed to pave a way for women and birthing people to honor the space of their becoming. Adriana now powerfully describes birth as not an emergency but an emergence. Her podcast, Birthful, seeks to inform your intuition through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.Resources:Birthful | podcast talking to perinatal pros and new parents to inform your intuitionThe Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth | childbirth education book, helping to compare and contrast your various optionsThe Bradley Method | childbirth education series

Adriana Lozada is the creator and host of The Birthful podcast as well as a working doula, a childbirth and postpartum educator and a sleep consultant. To offer your own advice, call Zak @ 844-935-BEST TRANSCRIPT: ZAK: Adriana is here today to teach us something that I am so incredibly uncomfortable with. Asking again. ADRIANA: This was year's ago and my husband and I were going to the Apple store because both our earbuds had busted. He had an iphone. I had an ipod so his, they were like, here's your replacement, no problem. For me, it was like, you need to make an appointment with a genius. There was no appointments. And it was hours wait. So I asked the person helping us, couldn't they just give it to me. You know that's what's gonna happen at the end. My husband just got it. Can't you just give me one again. He was like, well, I don't know...policy. And I said, can you ask the manager. I'm a doula. So it comes from advocacy and making your voice and needs heard in a very conversational and curious way. Like, why not? Lets just explore this. Is it possible. Not, I'm demanding something to happen. So, that person went and asked the manager and came back and said, no, the manager said no. And I looked up and I said, can you ask them again? ZAK: Whoa. ADRIANA: And of course he laughed and my husband's looking at me like, what!? And he's like, sure. I'll ask again. I'll humor you crazy lady. And he went and came back with my earbuds. hahaha. And he's like, here ya go. And so that was very much the epitome of the ask again moment. But, it's a moment that I've definitely honed in with all I do with my doula clients. Understanding that circumstances can change and asking again does require you to put yourself out there and it does require some vulnerability because you already have the answer you didn't want. If you ask again you might get the one you want. ZAK: My fear is by asking again, people are gonna think I'm a diva or something. How can you give people like me the confidence to actually ask again? ADRIANA: The key point there is you do need to put your ego aside. The outcome doesn't reflect to you or who you are. And I think that also comes from...I'm originally from Venezuela so my other mother tongue is Spanish and their you've got two different words for the verb, to be. And you have ser and estar. And one is you are. A condition that isn't gonna change. Like, I am a human. I will always be a human. But the other one is estar. It's a condition that is depending on how the moment is. I am cold. That's not who I am. I am cold right now. So, I think having that flexibility in your brain of this doesn't define me has been helpful in being able to navigate that asking again. And then from being a doula for so many years, I get to have the unique perspective of being able to go to different hospitals, work with different providers at home, at schedule cesarian, unmedicated births...The whole gamut and I see one provider might come up or a nurse and say, no, we need to do this and I know just last week in this same hospital down the hall with different providers, we did something different. And so knowing that things can be done in many different ways. There is that strength inside me of, well, I know it can be done differently. Lets see if we can make it different today.
