Dear Johnny, On December 13th, my wife Anna, had an appointment with a Hematologist/Oncologist due to severe anemia. That night at 7pm, we received a call from the doctor telling us to go to the Emergency Room for a blood transfusion due to a hemoglobin level of 5.1 (normal levels are usually between 12.0-15.0). Fifteen minutes later, her doctor called again and told us she needed to go to a bigger hospital because there was significant percentage of blasts (immature white blood cells) in her blood. Finding these blasts is a strong indicator of leukemia. That evening we arrived at the University of Kansas Hospital. After talking with a nurse, she was admitted to Labor & Delivery unit because, she is also 18 weeks pregnant. After completing more blood work it was determined that she needed 3 units of blood because her hemoglobin had dropped to 4.5. The following day two Hematologists came to deliver the news that she has Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), which is an aggressive form of Leukemia, and she would need to be admitted to the Leukemia unit to begin a minimum 5 week stay where she would start chemotherapy. The hard part is now that she is immunocompromised, she is unable to see the kids in person until she can go home. After a bone marrow biopsy, her form of Leukemia was confirmed. December 20th she began her first round of chemotherapy and will continue with this round of treatment for a total of 7 days. There is no guarantee that this round of chemotherapy will put her into remission; in the event that it does not, she will begin another round of treatment. These past few weeks have been such a crazy, overwhelming, whirlwind of events. This is such a scary time for our family; but we are staying as positive as we can. We are just trying to focus on what is happening now and not worry about the future. I just want to say friends and family have been so great to help out with the boys, meals, and sending well wishes and prayers. You really have no idea who is in your corner until something like this happens and we are blessed for the support we have received. I have taken several days off work and it has put us behind and I just don't want my wife to have any extra worries. Thank you for reading our letter. We appreciate it. Whether expecting your first, second, or third child, Emily provides evidence-based professional insights to help you navigate a journey filled with cherished memories, even during the often stressful and sleepless period of welcoming a newborn into your home. NAPS is committed to providing genuine support and evidence-based education. Emily addresses the challenges of dealing with social media critics who may guilt-trip you for not adhering to their perceived parenting norms. If you've recently given birth or know someone who could benefit from Emily's expertise, don't miss this episode of Stork'd. IN THIS EPISODE: [2:10] Emily shares her backstory of not having children, founding Nurture by NAPS, having three children and offering support and education to parents [6:11] Discussion regarding other countries offering institutionalized support services for new parents, which are not provided in the US and mental health needs for parents [10:25] Emily reveals her situation during pregnancy and how a program like NAPS would have made all the difference, and she discusses what NAPS offers [15:24] Emily believes parents should be able to get advice without judgment, using breastfeeding as an example [20:19] Discussion regarding sleep training, the need for support and education for new parents and what Emily would like to see in the future [30:10] Emily discusses what family means to her KEY TAKEAWAYS: Do not let anyone, including social media, guilt you into making decisions regarding your child that do not come from your heart and how you desire to nurture and parent your baby. Our nation is woefully behind in offering services to new moms because the services are privatized. Other countries do a much better job because it is a part of their healthcare system. Asking for support is critical when you have your new baby. So, don't be afraid to ask and narrow down the list of who you would trust to help or to give you advice. RESOURCE LINKS: Stork'd - Facebook Stork'd - Instagram Stork'd - YouTube Nurture by Naps - Instagram Nurture by Naps - Website BIOGRAPHY: Emily's passion for educating and supporting families stems from her personal experience dealing with loss. She lost a sister to SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), has had multiple miscarriages, and has dealt with the anxiety and the stigma that comes with taking medication while pregnant and breastfeeding. You can be assured that taboo topics are just not taboo for Emily! Emily began her career in General Medicine before working as a Labor & Delivery nurse, where she met NAPS co-founder Jamie O'Day. While working in Labor & Delivery, Emily went back to school to get her master's degree in nursing and become a Family Nurse Practitioner. She practiced as a Nurse Practitioner in an OBGYN office for several years before running NAPS full time with Jamie. Emily best supports families through NAPS by pulling from her vast medical background, and her own experiences with pregnancy and parenting as a mother of three girls. After graduating from Boston College, Emily received her graduate degree from UMass Boston. Emily is a Family Nurse Practitioner and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). She lives in Charlestown, MA with her husband, AJ, three daughters Grace (age 7), Madelyn (age 5), Eloise (age 1), and dog Maisey (age 9).
It's Krystle here and today we are talking about your pelvic floor! I've heard it both in the clinic and inside the Expecting and Empowered community that women are told to just do kegels to prepare for labor and delivery. And, oh boy, could that be farther than the truth. Today I am going to help you improve your labor experience by strengthening your ability to work with your body during childbirth, decrease tearing, and reduce the risk of having an emergency C-section.We discuss understanding the role the pelvic floor plays in labor and delivery, what the pelvic floor is made up of, and some of the issues that can arise in the pelvic floor that are not normal. I share some tips on how to achieve both strength and flexibility, simultaneously. Posture is also something that affects our pelvic floor. I will give you some exercises you can do to strengthen your posture. Knowing what to do during labor is also key. I offer some suggestions on what to do instead of pushing while lying on your back. Hopefully you feel more empowered about your pregnancy after you listen to this episode. Remember, knowledge is power and with the right preparation you can navigate this childbirth experience with confidence and trust. By Editor-in-Chief, Concierge Medicine Today/Host, The DocPreneur Leadership Podcast OB2me has changed the delivery of prenatal care for women throughout their pregnancy and childbirth. https://2mehealthcare.com/ https://2mehealthcare.com/ob2me/ About Carson Ragan, CNM Carson was born in Georgia, spent most of her childhood growing up in Birmingham, Alabama. She started her family at a very young age, and after her second child was born emergently three months premature, she knew she wanted to be a L&D or nursery nurse, so she returned to Georgia to attend Columbus State University for her undergraduate nursing degree. While in nursing school she gave birth to her third child under the care of a certified nurse midwife (CNM). Immediately, she knew that was exactly she wanted to become: a certified nurse midwife. She graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1999 and immediately began working in her favorite area of nursing, Labor & Delivery. Over the years as an L&D nurse, she felt honored to provide care to thousands of families during one of the most intimate and memorable events in their lives. Before starting graduate school to become a CNM, she also pursued an internship and worked a few years as a Neonatal ICU nurse. It was important to her to learn more about what happened to the preemie and sick babies when they left the delivery room and how could she best educate and support her future patients as a CNM. After she gained years of bedside experience as a L&D/NICU nurse, charge nurse, CPR instructor and Nurse educator/Clinician, she finally went back to graduate school to pursue her dream. One of the most common types of clients we both work on are those trying to conceive, currently pregnant, or transition into labor. It is such an incredible experience helping mama and baby through the foot zone. On this episode, we talk about some of our experience and give suggestions on how you can help your client with what they need to find balance. And there definitely is a lot to help balance between growing a human being, hormones, back pain, nausea, emotions, and swollen feet...just to name a few :-) This episode is catered towards foot zone therapist, but anyone can benefit from the information about being mindful. Thank you all for the love and support! We absolutely love providing this resource for you all! If you don't follow us on instagram, you can by clicking HERE.

Rachel and Janni go into the details of giving birth in their early 20's DURING COVID! We both have different stories and experiences. Rachel giving birth a month early and Janni giving birth 10 days "late." We talk about what we physically and mentally went through while giving birth for our first times. From the actual pain to the fears that went through our minds while in this very life changing experience. Women are stronger than we think especially when going through this process. No birth story is the same and that's okay. We hope you enjoy listening to ours.

38 weeks pregnant. I'm hoping by the time this podcast episode is out I've given birth or AT LEAST am in labor. Mama is tired & just wants to meet her baby. Since the only thing on my mind lately is labor — I figured it'd be fun to chat with you guys about what I've been doing differently this pregnancy vs my first to prep myself for the labor & delivery that I want, aka an unmedicated, natural VBAC. I'm also sharing what I've doing to naturally induce labor & get things going. As always — I'm not a doctor. So take what I'm saying with that in mind. Having children means that you can always expect the unexpected. One of my first big surprises becoming a mother was just how confusing it was to have kids in the first place. There were decisions to make that I didn't quite understand, options that I didn't know I had, and ways of doing things that I look back and wish I knew. Here in the U.S., the vast majority of babies are delivered by an obstetrician, one of the hardest working doctors in the field. But it wasn't always that way. Babies used to be birthed without the need for medical intervention, in the company of other women. As healthcare became more sophisticated, midwives dominated the delivery scene. But now, obstetricians, who are trained surgeons, have become primarily responsible for bringing babies into the world - or into the United States at least. So why is that? What has changed that has led birth to become so medically focused and less about the force of nature that is giving birth? Let's find out. On the show today is Dr. Cara Delaney, Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Practicing Physician with UCONN Health. Cara received her medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine and trained in Chicago and Boston. She works as an academic OBGYN alongside residents, medical students, and patients, specializing in complex family planning, early pregnancy loss, and miscarriage management. She's passionate about reproductive justice and patient-centered care and we are thrilled to have her here on the freemom podcast this week. From mental health and managing relationships to raising changemakers and advocating for support, freemom is a podcast dedicated to ensuring that every mom feels heard. Disclaimer: there are always multiple factors to consider. But in today's episode, we are going to touch on psychoneuroimmunology: the study of your body's emotional climate and your mind's subconscious belief systems, and how those play into your body's ability to successfully carry, deliver and nurture your baby. This week we have Emily, a former Labor & Delivery nurse turned freebirthing-mother. After starting nursing school when she was pregnant with her first daughter, Emily quickly realized that licensure and hospital policies trump all else, and advocating for your patients can only go so far. After her birth with her second son, she removed herself from the medical system altogether, and went on to have a wild pregnancy and a (surprise breech!) freebirth with her third. Sept. 7, 2020 - In this episode the girls dive into their labor and delivery stories for Labor Day. They hit on the new Walmart Plus service that's being released and share their opinions of it and how it compares to Amazon Prime. Lauren kicks off the discussion by sharing the unique delivery of her twins, which had lots of drama (delivering one vaginally and one by c-section). Sarah shares about her three inductions and how all her deliveries were similar and routine. The girls touch on who they wanted in the delivery room and how they are pro-epidural, even though Sarah had a rough one on her last pregnancy! Lot's of differences but both ladies still really enjoyed their delivery experiences - it's one of Sarah's favorite parts of having babies! They close out the show with their hits and misses of the week. Lauren has been liking the keto diet while Sarah has seen a huge change in the home since her Kindergartner started in-person school! Thanks so much for tuning in! Follow the girls on Instagram @themomvoicepodcast or find them at www.mom-voice.com for all details, saving codes and items mentioned throughout the show.
