Do you find yourself questioning whether the assessments you are giving are truly accomplishing what they are intended to accomplish? In this episode of Equipping ELLs, host Beth Vaucher welcomes two of the most influential voices in multilingual education and assessment: Dr. Andrea Honigsfeld and Dr. Margo Gottlieb. As part of the ongoing series, Dismantling Misconceptions About Multilingual Learners, this conversation focuses on rethinking assessment practices to better support English Language Learners (ELLs). Traditional testing methods often fail to capture the full potential of multilingual learners, limiting both students and educators in the process. Dr. Honigsfeld and Dr. Gottlieb challenge these outdated perspectives, advocating for a collaborative, asset-based approach that empowers both teachers and students.Drawing from their latest book, Collaborative Assessment for Multilingual Learners: Pathways to Partnerships, they explain how assessment can be integrated into daily instruction rather than treated as an isolated, high-stakes event. Instead of relying solely on standardized tests, which often fail to reflect students' true abilities, they introduce strategies that emphasize student voice, self-reflection, and peer collaboration. By shifting the focus away from rigid testing structures and toward ongoing, meaningful and collaborative assessment, educators can better understand their students' academic progress while fostering confidence and engagement. Dr. Honigsfeld and Dr. Gottlieb make the case that effective assessment should be an ongoing, collaborative process rather than a one-time event. Through real-world examples, they highlight how student voice, choice, and self-reflection can transform assessment into a tool for empowerment rather than a barrier to success. They also emphasize the importance of school leadership and systemic support in making meaningful change, while providing practical steps for educators who want to start small and build more inclusive assessment practices in their classrooms.ResourcesCollaborative Assessment for Multilingual Learners and TeachersCheck out Dr. Margo Gottlieb's WorkCheck out Dr. Andrea Honigsfeld's WorkJoin the Equipping ELLs Membership Shop our TpT StoreCheck Out Dr. Honigsfeld's other episode on the Equipping ELL's Podcast!

In my kitchen this week I am joined by Ed Foy, co-founder of the health brand PRESS. PRESS began as a cold-pressed juice company and has since grown into a full-fledged health brand with products that cater to every meal of the day, from breakfast to dinner.10 years ago, Ed and his co-founder Georgie drew inspiration from the vibrant health and wellness culture in LA, aiming to bring that West Coast lifestyle to London. In LA, a focus on health and wellness fuelled demand for juices, wellness shots, leafy green salads, and chia pudding bowls—items that became symbols of a health-conscious lifestyle that people eagerly embraced.Ed and Georgie started their journey by making juices at night and selling them by day at Old Street Station, where they quickly saw a growing demand. People were enthusiastic about investing in their health, and delicious, nutrient-dense juices were an ideal gateway. In this episode, Ed and I discuss how to elevate your health through juice cleanses, the difference between cold-pressed and regular juice, and how the health and wellness industry is evolving.Episode topics:Health and wellness as a lifestyle rather than a dietThe press journey from LA to LondonHow the wellness landscape has changedWhat is a cold-press juiceJuices vs smoothies Juice cleanses and their benefitsPRESS has diversified into other productsEd's journey to wellness The power of breath workCheck out PRESS here If you are interested in buying a juice cleanse or any other PRESS product use code GEORGIASYMONDS for 10% off your order Sponsors:This episode is sponsored by Zooki Claim your Zooki Trial Pack hereThis episode was hosted and produced by Georgia SymondsGeorgia's Instagram - click here! For more information and other interesting articles check out our website: www.catchupsinmykitchen.com Hosted on Acast. It's not easy to make the transition from high-performing individual contributor to manager in an advertising agency (or in any industry, for that matter). TJ Bennett knows that first-hand because he was promoted to leadership roles with no advance preparation…and no training once he was in the position. In this episode, TJ shares lessons he learned along the way and the three primary areas he helps his coaching clients with.  TJ is the creative who helps creatives get creative with their career. Often beclad in cat-themed and/or Snoopy gear, TJ is pretty easy to spot in a crowd. Once you find him, you'll discover that his love for felines and cartoon beagles is matched by a mildly unhealthy obsession with making work not suck. He spends his days listening intently to clients, helping them uncover insights that spark life-altering possibilities.  And he spends his nights dreaming of the same thing, except everyone is dressed like clowns and he forgot to wear pants for some reason. Rest assured he will never show up to a session sans trousers and will always show up with a fresh perspective that makes you think about work a little differently. TJ is the Founder of The Pudding Factory, where he serves as coach, creative problem solver, and writer. Political artist and women's rights activist Natalie White returns to talk about her famous family, her crusade to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, and why the people are more powerful than politicians on episode 144 of the Far Out with Faust Podcast.*This is our second conversation with Natalie White. Check out Part 1 (episode 143) at: https://youtu.be/VRZ22gwINF0Natalie White is a pioneering feminist and artist renowned for her groundbreaking work in Giant Polaroid Photography and fervent advocacy for women's rights. Her notable solo exhibition at The WhiteBox Foundation in June/July 2016 set the stage for a momentous 250-mile march from New York City to Washington, D.C., aimed at propelling the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) into the national conversation. Demonstrating her commitment, White boldly painted “ERA NOW” on the Capitol steps, leading to her arrest and subsequent self-represented trial just before the 2017 Presidential Inauguration and Women's March. Despite the trial's high-profile nature, with support from celebrities like Patricia Arquette and Kamala Lopez, White faced minimal repercussions, showcasing her ability to leverage media for her cause. As co-director of Equal Means Equal, alongside Kamala Lopez, White played a crucial role in reviving the ERA movement, contributing to Nevada, Illinois and Virginia's ratification—the first states to do so in nearly four decades. Her activism extended to challenging the Trump Administration's and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos's policies, particularly their undermining of Title IX protections. White's relentless pursuit of gender equality and her innovative use of art and activism have solidified her status as a formidable force in the fight for women's constitutional rights. In this episode, Faust and Natalie find common ground in spite of conflicting political backgrounds. Natalie delves into her famous family, the Whites of West Virginia, and what it was like to have Johnny Knoxville make a movie about them.Discussion highlights include:-The White Family legacy on folk art in America-Natalie's advocacy for the Equal Rights Amendment and women's rights-What it means to be an “outlaw” and the value of civil disobedience-How the Biden Administration is thwarting the Equal Rights Amendment-Why the Democrats don't want social change-How the government is manipulating information to instill fear and discourage free thought via concepts like “misinformation”-The implications of censorship in terms of the First Amendment and the value and power of the Internet to promote free speech-The differences between the government narrative and the reality of political events like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict-How those in power misuse the idea of conspiracy theories to discourage critical thinking-The dynamics of power between the state and the people-The importance of personal responsibility and action in seeking truth and engaging in activism-The impact of cultural and family legacy on Natalie's activism and artistic workCheck out our other episodes featuring Natalie WhiteFOWF Episode 143: https://youtu.be/VRZ22gwINF0FOWF ERA Has Passed!: https://youtu.be/29Oy6y5QdI8Connect with Natalie WhiteFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/natalie.white.7186Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/itswhitetrashConnect with Equal Means Equal Website: https://equalmeansequal.org/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/equalmeansequalmovie/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/ERAEducationProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/equalmeansequal/#Podcast #Activism #EqualRights

Ever been to a cringey Zoom social hour at work, playing online trivia or doing awkward icebreakers with your colleagues? Sometimes virtual socializing at work is great…and sometimes it feels like a waste of time. But in workplaces where IRL hangs aren't possible, should we really skip socializing altogether? For our first ever live show, recorded at Atlassian's Team '23 conference in Vegas, debaters Deb Lao and Marshall Walker Lee took to the stage to debate this thorny topic.  Deb defended virtual socializing, citing the benefits of a workplace BFF and the value of dedicating work time to culture building. Marshall countered, making the case that so many of these Zoom hangs are so poorly executed, they should be canceled so more organic team bonding can flourish.

3 Questions To Ask Yourself Before You Hire

If you're an entrepreneur, leader, or work in human resources, then this week's episode was made just for you! When it comes to growing your business, the decision to add employees can feel very overwhelming. The truth is that hiring a new employee can bring comfort and ease in your everyday work life. If you find yourself wondering Is it time to hire a new employee? These 3 questions should bring you clarity. Capacity - Is your ability to create revenue impeded by your capacity limits?Mindset - Are you ready to change the way you view your business to make space for true support?Stability - Can you identify an average revenue marker or profit margin that you can expect to come in each month that allows for setting a budget? We can take all three of these things and deconstruct them into whether or not an employee or contractor is the right move. A long term, involved player in a growing business will be most successful in starting and growing in an employee role. A bandaid on a bullet hole, or hemorrhage hire is going to be more about the tasks and less about the person. Things that you don't need to have sorted before you hire:Revenue of XX amount - Don't worry about the numbers. Look for consistent predictable revenue. A desire to grow and expand - Hiring could mean growth, or it could mean maintenance - a hire can mean the difference between a busy life for you or a truly sustainable model with less profit. Neither are wrong.SOP Libraries - Processes are important, but you don't need them to be set in stone to hire support. KPI Dashboards - if you can ID one measure of success to start, you can always build on those later Don't wait for the stars to align to hire a new employee. Take the risk with the proper precautions, and watch your business flourish. Next week, we're chatting with my dear friend and client, Jordan King, to chat all about the overhaul of a team built on being contractors, and then mindset shifts that happen when converting business owners to employees (and the pitfalls!) ----Resources: Follow Dana Shular: https://www.instagram.com/danashular/ 1 in 3 professional women say they've experienced sexual harassment at workCheck out our blog: https://the-paradigm.com/blog/ ---- Like what you hear?Let's get your business Set to Scale - Get started!Get Down With The Up And Up!
