The history of the United States is littered with injustices. What should patriotism look like when our country does wrong? And how can we be patriotic, in spite of injustices? Can we hope for better? Nikole Hannah-Jones joins host Alex Lovit to talk about America's history, our country's truest historical heroes, and how we can push for a more inclusive democracy in the future, Nikole Hannah-Jones is the Knight Chair in Race and Journalism and the founder of the Center for Journalism & Democracy at Howard University. As a staff writer for the New York Times Magazine, she created The 1619 Project, a collection of essays reflecting on 1619, the year that the first enslaved Africans landed in Virginia. Her own introductory essay won the Pulitzer Prize, and the project has been adapted into other forms, including a book and a docuseries. This is the third and final episode in our series, “Democracy, Under Construction,” which commemorates America's 250th anniversary by focusing on the moments when our country became a more inclusive democracy and celebrating the historical figures who pushed the country to live up to its ideals. "But we have this treasure in jars of clay..."In this powerful message, Pastor Owen Miller of Walnut Creek Mennonite Church explores the concept of "Broken Arrows." So often, we disqualify ourselves from God's service because we feel too damaged, too flawed, or too "broken" to be useful. This is a continuation of Owen's "Under Construction" Series of monthly messages.Drawing from 2 Corinthians 4:7 and the story of the woman at the well in John 4, Pastor Owen reminds us that our humanity isn't a hurdle for God—it's His preferred canvas. When we stop trying to hide our cracks and brokenness, we allow the light of Christ to shine through them more clearly. If you've ever felt like you aren't "whole" enough to make a difference, this sermon is a reminder that God doesn't just tolerate your weakness; He embraces and uses it to display His extraordinary power.Key Highlights:Jars of Clay: Understanding that the "treasure" is Christ, not our own perfection. The Woman at the Well: How a life of brokenness became a catalyst for a city's revival. From Disqualified to Directed: Shifting our focus from our flaws to God's strength.Scripture References:"But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us." — 2 Corinthians 4:7"Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?" — John 4:29Connect with Walnut Creek Mennonite Church!#BrokenArrows #WalnutCreekMennonite #PastorOwenMiller #2Corinthians4 #GraceInBrokenness #ChristianSermon

LGBTQ+ people have been part of the American story from the beginning, fighting for the right to pursue happiness long before Stonewall. In recent decades, the movement has achieved major cultural, political, and legal gains. Yet these advances have disproportionately benefited middle-class individuals who can conform to cultural norms and can afford to assert their legal rights. Jules Gill-Peterson joins host Alex Lovit to discuss who has been left behind, why solidarity matters, and how to build a broader sense of shared interests within and beyond the LGBTQ+ community. In this episode of Under Construction with Chadwicks, host Donncha is joined by Shauna Doyle, better known as The Tarmacing Mammy, and David Swan, aka The Carpentry Kid. From career changes to apprenticeships, the conversation explores what it really takes to build a life in the trades today. Shauna shares her journey from working as a beauty therapist to becoming a tarmacker in her family-run business, Doyles Tarmacadam in Carlow — proving that it's never too late to change direction and find a career that fits. She also speaks honestly about the realities of being a woman on site, the challenges she's faced, and the pride that comes with doing hands-on work that makes a visible difference. David takes us back to the beginning of his carpentry journey — from starting out with a passion for the craft, to completing his apprenticeship through TUD, and becoming a qualified carpenter. Now specialising in everything from panelling and kitchen units to flooring, wardrobes, and door fittings, he explains how training, consistency, and confidence helped shape his career — and why the apprenticeship route is one of the strongest pathways into construction today. A key theme throughout the episode is the importance of apprenticeships and trade careers for the next generation. Shauna and David discuss the opportunities available right now in Ireland, why there still isn't enough awareness around apprenticeships, and what they'd say to anyone who thinks they “wouldn't be suited” to a trade. The episode also shines a light on the rise of the modern tradesperson online. With Shauna and David both building loyal followings by sharing their work on social media, they talk about how content creation has opened doors, created new opportunities, and helped inspire more people — especially young workers and women — to consider careers in construction.

In this episode of Under Construction with Chadwicks, host Donncha O'Callaghan sits down with one of Ireland's most recognisable and thoughtful voices in music and mental health — Niall “Bressie” Breslin. From growing up in Mullingar, a town famous for producing musical icons, to fronting The Blizzards during the 2000s, Bressie reflects on the moments that shaped his creative journey. Before music took centre stage, Bressie was also a talented rugby player with Leinster, and he opens up about how the discipline, structure, and pressures of elite sport helped prepare him for the realities of the music industry. He also discusses how those early experiences continue to influence his mindset today — both creatively and personally. A central part of the conversation focuses on mental health advocacy. Bressie speaks candidly about his own struggles, the moment he decided to share his story publicly, and the response he's seen — particularly from men across Ireland. He explores how conversations around emotional literacy are changing, what people tell him when he speaks around the country, and how communities and workplaces can better support mental wellbeing in everyday life.   Beyond music and advocacy, Bressie shares insights into life away from the stage — from writing books and hosting podcasts to his love of DIY and hands-on creative projects, which he finds deeply therapeutic. He also talks about currently finishing up a PhD in Trinity College and how curiosity and learning continue to drive him forward.    Follow Chadwicks, Donncha, and the Guest:

From building sites to social media feeds, this festive episode is packed with proper site banter, real talk, and plenty of laughs. Dustin shares his take on DIYers, apprentices, and the realities of modern regulations, while Eric opens up about his own self-build journey in Donegal, juggling planning permission, insulation choices, and learning the ropes along the way. The conversation moves from bricks and mortar to Donegal versus Dublin, as they explore the rural–city divide, what “home” really means, and where's best to raise a family. Eric reflects on how Donegal's rugged landscape and strong sense of place have shaped both his humour and his online success, while Dustin weighs in on whether the Dubs really get everything handed to them. Social media takes centre stage too, with Eric discussing his journey from SNA to one of Ireland's most recognisable online creators, the pressure of feeding the algorithm, and how content creation is shaping how we all use social platforms today. And of course, being a Christmas Special, no chat with Dustin would be complete without a festive detour — turkeys at Christmas, changing traditions, charity campaigns, and whether another seasonal hit could ever be on the cards.

Aaron McManus opens this episode of the Mind Shift Podcast by introducing its theme, “Under Construction,” referencing both their house renovation due to mold and the idea of lives under construction through scripture. He and his father, Erwin Raphael McManus, record amidst the noise of ongoing repairs, using it as a metaphor for spiritual growth. Erwin humorously admits his tendency to get granular with the Bible, spending weeks on a single chapter, while Aaron explains that this episode marks a shift into deeper conversations around scripture – a new focus for the podcast. They dive into the often snarky comments on social media. Erwin encourages listeners to engage with kindness rather than negativity, aiming to create a positive and inclusive space. Aaron shares how people frequently attempt to educate Erwin on theology despite his background, prompting a discussion about humility in spiritual conversations and the importance of listening over lecturing when it comes to scripture. The conversation turns deeply personal as Erwin shares his journey with the Bible, starting with the Gospel of John, which emotionally transformed his understanding of Jesus, and moving into Acts, which gave him a sense of being part of an ongoing movement. Aaron recalls a dinner conversation about the visible changes Jesus brought to his life, reflecting on how scripture reshapes identity and purpose. They emphasize that engaging with the Bible is not just academic but transformative when approached relationally and reflectively.Erwin recounts his surprising experience accidentally enrolling in a PhD Hebrew course at UNC Chapel Hill and how his classmates supported him through it. He explains the literary and cultural distinctions between the Old and New Testaments, highlighting how the Old Testament's stories build a worldview and the New Testament calls for interpretation and application. Aaron and Erwin suggest reading different Gospels based on personality type to cultivate a personal connection to Jesus' life and teachings. They conclude by discussing the need for action and community in Bible study. Erwin shares his preparation method for talks: finding truth, experiencing it, and acting on it, while Aaron describes his use of the SOAP method (Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer) for daily integration. They reflect on theological debates that miss the heart of scripture and stress that understanding the Bible is incomplete without practical obedience and community engagement. The episode ends with an encouragement to listeners: build your life on the living truths of scripture, stay rooted in community, and let action transform knowledge into a life aligned with God's heart.

From Amy:I met Nicole Diaz in the life-coaching world around the time that I was first envisioning my online community for real-life writers. She demonstrated a brilliant understanding of the creative process, and I had this idea of hosting Idea Parties as the centerpiece of my work with writing groups, with Parker Palmer's work as my model. Nicole was a Parker Palmer fan too. So for a few years, we collaborated to host once-a-month calls on Saturday mornings where we let beautiful words draw us into our writing.Afterwards, people spoke their voices into the room, and nobody corrected or coached or edited each other. Instead, we let you be at the heart of your story and reflected your words back. And books began to be written and friendships began to be made.Together, Nicole and I developed a flexible and potent Idea Party format that works to this day, even after she has moved on.There were other experiments Nicole and I tried, among them this little series of three podcasts. It was going to be available in the community library only, as one of many exclusive features. Since then I've streamlined my online Writing Circle space to center on writing calls and there's no reason to house a three-part podcast series with a leader who's no longer there. On the other hand, Nicole and I agree that these three episodes would make a beautiful Winter Solstice gift to YOU, my podcast listeners, at a time when creativity could bring us all comfort if we could just calm down about the creative process itself. These are shorter than my other episodes, and I find talking with Nicole delightful. God calls us to Constant and Never-Ending Improvement.  We are called to be NEW CREATIONS, getting better mentally, spiritually, emotionally and personally.  This is why we believe the sign of a Leader is, Under Construction. The Japanese are world renowned for their quality of life, and of manufacturing.  What I believe makes the Japanese people stand out is their attitude, their mindset of Continual Improvement.  An American named Dr. Deming went to Japan after America defeated them in WW2.  Dr. Deming taught the Japanese and important principle of life: Quality always costs less! He posited to the Japanese that if they could just focus on constantly improving, they would eventually be globally dominant. Today on Like It Matters Radio Mr. Black wants to focus in on 6+1 mindsets that the Japanese use to keep their hearts and minds focused on Constant and Never-Ending Improvement: Ikigai, Kaizen, Pomodoro Technique, Hara Hachi Bu, Shoshin, Wabi-Sabi and Kata. Tune into Like It Matters Radio for an hour of Power as Mr. Black helps listeners get their minds right!  Because it is that attitude that causes a leader to live their life like it Matters! Under Construction The sign of an Effective Leader. Good is the enemy of Great is a concept Leadership guru and author Jim Collins expounded and expanded on in his book, “Good to Great; Why Some Companies Make the Leap and Others Don't.” John D. Rockefeller told us, “Don't be afraid to give up the good to go for the great”. Collins said, “The enemy of great is NOT bad, the enemy of great is good”.  Under Construction for a leader means Constant and Never-ending Improvement (CANI).  Today Mr. Black talks about the power of CANI and has listeners consider how small, incremental changes can add up to GREAT THINGS. Mr. Black references James Clears book,” Atomic Habits”, and shares data about what accepting 99.9% means to a leader, and to our lives.  Mr. Black will also be joined by 3 leaders from Valley Fab Corporation who just completed Mr. Black's Leadership Awakening experience. His guests will share how our lives can change drastically in a short period of time when we embrace the sign of being a Leader, Under Construction! Inspiration, Education and Application is what listeners can expect!
