vChap. 226 - Why Look for Flaws? Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Philippians 2:3. {OHC 232.1} Oh, how hard many make the Christian life! They climb the steep, briary path, staggering under imposed burdens, as though they must tinker up the characters of others. . . . They do not experience the sweet peace of Christ. They do not grasp the help Jesus gives them, but they are continually grieving over supposed wrongs of others, and overlook the cheering, blessed tokens for good all along their pathway. {OHC 232.2} Just as soon as one has a vivid and all-absorbing consciousness of his own personal accountability to God and of his duty to his fellow men, and senses that his influence is far reaching, stretching into eternity, he will not be satisfied with a low standard, he will not be faultfinding and critical of others. He will make his own life what he would wish the lives of others to be. He will live only in Christ, utterly and wholly dependent on Him for every beauty and loveliness of character. {OHC 232.3} We should be weeding out of our thoughts all complaining and faultfinding. Let us not continue to look upon any defects that we may see. . . . If we would get the right hold on God, we must keep beholding the great precious things--the purity, the glory, the power, the kindness, the affection, the love, that God bestows upon us. And thus beholding, our minds will become so fixed upon these things of eternal interest that we shall have no desire to find the flaws in others. {OHC 232.4} Think of the Lord Jesus, and His merits and His love, but do not seek to find the defects and dwell upon the mistakes that others have made. Call to your mind the things worthy of your recognition and your praise; and if you are sharp to discern errors in others, be more sharp to recognize the good and praise the good. You may, if you criticize yourselves, find things just as objectionable as that which you see in others. Then let us work constantly to strengthen one another in the most holy faith. {OHC 232.5} --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tawasv/message

Ep. 16 Where Do Animals Fit into Human Flourishing? w/ Ike Sharpless

Damn the Absolute!

Answering questions about what it means for humans to flourish is difficult. Attempting any certainty as to what it means for nonhuman animals to flourish is even more confounding. And yet, these questions have significant overlap.   While some cultures have developed relationships that are responsive to the lives and needs of other animals, some communities—many stemming from modern Western traditions—have tended to view nonhuman animals more like resources. Materials to be managed or controlled for the primary benefit of humanity. From this perspective, the natural world is mechanical, passive, and speechless, seen as distinct from the human world.   But how might attending more to nonhuman perspectives and ways of being contribute to human flourishing? What, if any, moral obligations do we have to the nonhuman members of our particular communities and households?   Jeffrey Howard speaks with Ike Sharpless, a political theorist interested in animal ethics and the history of science and philosophy. He holds two master's degrees from Tufts University. One in law and diplomacy, the other in animals and public policy. In addition to earning a master's degree in political science from UC San Diego, he is also studying to receive his doctorate. He advocates for a more inclusive view of human nature that obscures the divisions between humans and nonhuman animals, inviting us to reflect more on the sensorial encounters we have with other living beings. He takes us on a freewheeling exploration into the challenging territories of animal flourishing, interspecies relationships, and how we might better accommodate nonhuman animals into our political and social systems.   Now some things worth considering. How confident can we be in our understanding of the inner lives of other animals? What are some tangible steps we can individually take to make right our relationships with other animals? Do nonhuman animals have moral agency? In what ways do other living creatures contribute to human wellbeing and what can we do to bolster animal flourishing?   Show Notes The Spell of the Sensuous by David Abram (1996)   Why Look at Animals by John Berger (2009)   Frontiers of Justice: Disability, Nationality, Species Membership by Martha Nussbaum (2007)   Primates and Philosophers by Frans de Waal (2006)   Zoopolis: A Political Theory of Animal Rights by Sue Donaldson and Will Kymlicka (2011)   The Eye of the Crocodile by Val Plumwood (2012)   Animal Minds and Human Minds: The Origins of the Western Debate by Richard Sorabji (1995)   How Forests Think: Toward an Anthology Beyond the Human by Eduardo Kohn (2013)   "Alone in One of Nature's Threshold Places" by Derek Parsons (2020)   Ep. 8 Embracing Subsistence Agriculture During the Collapse of Industrial Capitalism w/ Ashley Colby (2021)   Ep. 7 Charles Peirce and Inquiry as an Act of Love w/ David O'Hara (2020)   "Politics and the Signs of Animal Life: Biosemiotics, Aristotle, and Human-Animal Relations" by Ike Sharpless (2016)

I've been asked this questions in a few interviews. As there are no rules and you can do anything you want in a podcast, are there are any Podcasting Best Practices? Well as we all see podcasting through many different lenses I thought I would share my opinion on the best practices. Have a Topic You Are Passionate About, as in REALLY Passionate about.  Next week you will hear Jamie from Horses in the morning talk about her L O V E of horses. In the past I have said you need the passion that a sixteen year old boy has for getting his driver's license. WHY: Because when you first start out, it will be awkward, and you will still be getting comfortable behind the mic. You will have next to no audience and it is soul crushing to put that much work into something and have next to nobody listen to it. When you have that passion, you will talk about it even if nobody is listening.  Know Your Target Audience I know, "But Dave you just said I don't have an audience." I know, but who is the person that should love this content. Also, I don't mean "34-48 year old Women. That is identify who they are. I mean KNOW THEM. Go hang out with them, and find out what makes them tick.  WHY: One of the biggest fears is sounding stupid. How do you avoid this? By knowing what your audience needs (we cover this in the planning your content course, as well as "Content is King" course).  Know WHY You're Podcasting Every podcaster says "It takes more time than I thought" when you start a podcast (for the record it takes more time than you thought for many things if you think about it). Starting a podcast is easy. Start is GOOD podcast can tricky. You've identified who your audience is, and what your topic is, but the why can help shape the content. If you're trying to keep your brand in front of your potential customer you might do three five minute podcasts a week. If you want to be seen as an expert, maybe you do a weekly 20-minute show where you answer a question. If you're trying to grow your network, maybe you do interviews with other people in your field.  WHY: When you start to achieve your goal, it puts gas in your tank. If you are NOT achieving your goal you know you need to adjust the content or turn up the marketing.  Get The Best Equipment You Can Afford I typically say you can sound pretty good for the price of an Xbox (about $300). By the time you get a microphone and some sort of interface, etc. You're looking between $70-$300 depending on how many co-hosts you have, etc.  WHY: Look at the top 200 shows in Apple and see how many were recorded using their phone (although you can make "OK" recording with your phone when used correctly).  Have A General Idea Of How a Podcast Works I've been driving since I was 16. While I don't know enough about my car to work on it. I do know enough to do some basic troubleshooting.  WHY: By understanding the mechanics of a podcast you can avoid a lot of unnecessary panic when your episode doesn't appear in an app a few minutes after you press publish.  It's YOUR Show Aisha Tyler said at Podcast Movement one of the biggest reason she loved her podcast was because it was HERS. Don't interview people if you're not sure they are a good fit. If you don't want to talk about a topic, don't. If you do want to talk about a topic - do. It's your show.  Make Yourself Available Everywhere I talked about this in the episode about growing your downloads, WHY: A boss walks into the board room and says, "I just heard this (insert name) podcast on the way in it was great. Everyone pulls out their phone but some people subscribe on Apple, Google, Spotify, Overcast, Stitcher, etc.  Don't Pick a Release Date Until Your In All the Apps I had this happen to me. My new show Grow Your Community was in Apple, but NOT in Overcast (even though Overcast pulls from Apple). In the same way that bands in the 80's wouldn't pick a date for their CD release party until they had the CD in their hand, don't pick your "Launch" date until your show is available to SUBSCRIBE.  Be Appropriate but also you might consider if you're going to swear or not in your show. When you do you get pulled from India and other countries. I actually listened to the "Losing 100 Pounds" podcast and the host dropped an F-bomb in the first 15 seconds. This was followed by a flurry of other no safe for kids type of language. About 20 minutes she finally mentioned that she curses like a sailor and if you don't like that you should tune out. I'm no prude, but she sounded like a 13-year-old out behind the barn seeing how many swear words she could work into a sentence.  Again, it's HER show she can do whatever she wants. There were MANY 1 star reviews that just said the swearing was over the top.  Edit Your Podcast There are editors for newspapers, magazines, books, TV, movies, but you are the person on the planet that everything that comes out of your mouth is perfect. Really? Radio people can not believe people who choose to "keep it real" and just publish as-is. You have the opportunity to make yourself (your guest) sound better. If nothing else, edit one or two episodes, and if you hate it, pay someone to edit it for you. By editing a few episodes you will be willing to pay someone as it is time-consuming and you will appreciate the job they do. Get Honest Feedback I get it. It's your art. You worked hard on it. You might be afraid to get some feedback. Some really are looking for agreement on everything they've done when they ask for feedback. They don't want to change (cause as we mentioned, when you first start it takes time). However, feedback can steer your podcast in the right direction so you can help achieve your goal. Last week I talked about how I got feedback on my music and most people didn't like it. It didn't crush me. I listened to their reasons, saw their point, and changed my music.  I listened to a podcast today where a school had launched a podcast, got some feedback, and then changed the name, changed the intro, changed the artwork and got amazing results.  Be Consistent Pick a schedule and stick with it. Also, be consistent in quality. If you go to a McDonald's in one town and have a hamburger, fly across the country and have another one they taste the same. Sure it's unhealthy, but the taste is consistent.  Don't Use Unlicensed Music No, you can't play Taylor Swift. Nope. But what about?? No. No. No. No. What about 10 seconds? No. they are cracking down on this HARD right now.  You Only Need ONE Episode To Launch Your first recording will not be as good as your second. Consequently don't release everything you record. Some people think you record 10 episodes and release them at once so people can really connect with you. WHY: Rob Walch VP at Libsyn.com (the oldest, largest media host) said at a conference in Australia (online) that people lack any feedback. If someone gets feedback on episode three but has seven more episodes recorded and set to publish, the listener has to wait for eight episodes to hear any changes based on their feedback.  Focus On Your Audience  and Don't Compare Yourself To Others We talked about knowing your audience, now that you know what they want your show is about THEM, and your WHY. Don't get distracted by what other people are doing, how much money they are making, focus on your audience. If you find yourself thinking about a similar show and it upsets you, drop it and focus on your audience. Get Your Attitude in Check Podcasting is a LONG game. It is a marathon not a sprint (years not months). Also remember, you don't have to make money with your podcast. Be Open To New Experiences We mentioned being open to feedback, but also open to partnering with other podcasts, trying new segments, trying new marketing strategies. If your show isn't giving you what you want, then try something new. Have A Website and Control Your Show You control our website. If the latest social network gets canceled, people will know to find you on our website. Never let a media host (Anchor) submit your show "for you" to directories so that you maintain control of your show.  Google Wants Good Content Google wants to deliver great search results to its customers so give it something people will find valuable. Have a good description with enough words (at least 300) to attack Google. While you want to pay attention to keywords, you also want to be appropriate. Use headings to breaking up long posts.  It's All About Subscribers We mentioned "being everywhere" but that doesn't help if you make it hard (find me in Apple) to subscribe to your show. Have buttons on your site to share your show and subscribe.  Promote Your Show Use social media and any other tools that will help you get your podcast in front of your target audience.  WHY: There are over one million podcasts in Apple podcasts. If you think Apple will make you famous, then you should be famous from being in the phone book.  Pay Attention to Your Media Host In general, the media hosts I recommend have some sort of podcast to keep you informed of updates to their technology and news to what is going on in the podcasting space.  If You're Looking to Monetize - Start an Email List While social media may be all the buzz, when it comes to getting people to click on something, hands down Sendfox email is better. I use.  Also, if you're looking to monetize, selling your own product is the best way, but most podcasters who are looking to monetize have multiple streams of income.  Final Thoughts If you can't seem to pull the trigger, you are probably overthinking it.  When in doubt, ask your audience.  Ready To Start You Podcast? Sermon Recording Sermon OutlineSpeaker: Rev. Charles DrewSermon Series: PsalmsPsalm 45 (ESV)To the choirmaster: according to Lilies. A Maskil of the Sons of Korah; a love song. 1 My heart overflows with a pleasing theme; I address my verses to the king; my tongue is like the pen of a ready scribe.2 You are the most handsome of the sons of men; grace is poured upon your lips; therefore God has blessed you forever. 3 Gird your sword on your thigh, O mighty one, in your splendor and majesty!4 In your majesty ride out victoriously for the cause of truth and meekness and righteousness; let your right hand teach you awesome deeds! 5 Your arrows are sharp in the heart of the king's enemies; the peoples fall under you.6 Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. The scepter of your kingdom is a scepter of uprightness; 7 you have loved righteousness and hated wickedness. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions; 8 your robes are all fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia. From ivory palaces stringed instruments make you glad; 9 daughters of kings are among your ladies of honor; at your right hand stands the queen in gold of Ophir.10 Hear, O daughter, and consider, and incline your ear: forget your people and your father's house, 11 and the king will desire your beauty. Since he is your lord, bow to him. 12 The people of Tyre will seek your favor with gifts, the richest of the people.13 All glorious is the princess in her chamber, with robes interwoven with gold. 14 In many-colored robes she is led to the king, with her virgin companions following behind her. 15 With joy and gladness they are led along as they enter the palace of the king.16 In place of your fathers shall be your sons; you will make them princes in all the earth. 17 I will cause your name to be remembered in all generations; therefore nations will praise you forever and ever.Sermon OutlinePsalm 45 is a love song, composed for a royal wedding and arising from the imagination of a song writer who is delighted by the prospect of it. Lovely in itself, it points to a deeper reality that has meaning for us. I.) The “happy couple”A) The groom/king (vv. 2-9)Surpassingly handsome: v. 2: “The most handsome of the sons of men”Nobility of words and character: Words: v.2—“grace is poured upon your lips”Jesus: “No man ever spoke like this man.” “And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth.”(Luke 4:22) Character: vv. 4, 7: In your majesty ride out victoriously for the cause of truth and meekness and righteousness;… [Y]ou have loved righteousness and hated wickedness. Jesus:MeekUnflinchingly loyal to what is true, good, and real. 3. A champion. v5: Your arrows are sharp in the heart of the king's enemies; the peoples fall under you. A winner in the battles worth fighting: Like David before Goliath.Like Jesus before sin, sickness, deceit, and arrogance B) The bride/queen (vv. 10-15) Beautiful (v 11)—deeply attractive—reflected in her exquisite clothing: v. 13-14-- All glorious is the princess in her chamber, with robes interwoven with gold. 14 In many-colored robes she is led to the king… Surrounded by joyous and loving friends: v. 15-- With joy and gladness they are led along as they enter the palace of the king. Ready to commit everything to the new arrangement. v. 10: forget your people and your father's house, and the king will desire your beauty. ..Bow to him. Honor and respect are freely given and received. The outcome is great and world-wide goodness.II.) What does this love song mean? A) God himself intends to satisfy our deepest social longings—v.6: Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. We are cynical about weddings and politics because people disappoint us. But God will not disappoint. B) The love of Jesus for us and our world.v. 11: …the king will desire your beauty… “I will betroth you to me forever” (Hosea 2:19) Psalm 45: A window on God’s heart.III.) Take away Don’t be so cynical about love stories and politics. Let our hearts overflow with a pleasing theme “See through” our stories to the big story.Address our verses to the king. The church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord. She is his new creation by water and the word. From heaven he came and sought her to be his holy bride. With his own blood he bought her and for her life he died.Questions for ReflectionReflect on Derek Kidner’s summary of this psalm. Do you agree? Where in the text do you see the elements he speaks of? Does he leave anything out? [The song] is as dazzling as the occasion it graces. The outward splendor of the event is evoked in every line, and beneath the surface we sense the momentous event that it is for the two central characters [the groom/king addressed in vv. 2-9 and the bride/queen addressed in vv. 10-15]: both an end and a beginning, pivotal nor only for them but for the kingdom, whose future is bound up in the sons they will produce.” Social commentators point out that more young people than ever choose not to marry these days, making this choice because they are cynical about the institution. Are you cynical about marriage? Why? Why not? The groom is also a king. What characterizes him (vv. 2-9)? Compare him to a prominent world leader of our time (take care not to bash the leader in question: simply draw an objective comparison). Describe what our world would be like if leaders and citizens everywhere reflected the qualities found in vv. 2-4. Describe the bride/queen (vv. 10-16). What appeals to you about her? Does anything not appeal to you? Why? Look carefully at v. 6-7a, where God himself is abruptly addressed in the midst of the address to the groom/king (with equal abruptness, v. 7b returns to the human king). Why does the psalmist do this? Reflect on how vividly vv. 2-9 describe Jesus. Spend some time in prayer, thanking him that he is your (and the church’s) groom/king. Pray for his triumph throughout out world—for the beauty and grace of his words, together with his truth, meekness, and righteousness, to permeate human experience. Pray that he will help his people to leave behind their former alliances and “bow to him.”Prayer of ConfessionMerciful God, no ruler is like the one you have given us. Jesus’ every word is gracious, his every deed true, humble and righteous. We confess that we often spurn him, choosing rather to follow our own inclinations and the opinions of others. Forgive our folly. Give us grace to heed the warnings of your prophets and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy his coming. For he is our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Permalink

"But my business is different". Took this from marketing guru Dan Kennedy. How true, and somewhat contentious. Why? Look, All Businesses Have The Same Fundamental Functions In Common… They have either a customer or a client or a patient… They provide either a good or a service or both… They may go to the customer location or bring the customer to their location… They have to have some method of attracting new ones… They need some method that’s selling repeatedly to and keeping ones they already have… The differences between the cosmetic dentistry practice to the manufacturer of widgets that go inside vibrators, to the furniture store, the differences are really very small, very nominal and the commonalities are much greater. Commonly, people suffering in their love life are suffering physically somehow, whether it’s chronic pain, a broken heart (heart problems), breast or lung cancer.  They long for that deep connection with someone that seems so elusive that they are in this physical distress.  Worse is after divorce, especially a really ugly one, picking up the shattered fragments to put together a loving connected life seems nearly impossible. People come to me all the time to solve a physical malady but in essence really need to heal their love life.  Let’s look at what happens when hopes and dreams die, the happily ever after fades into the distance, and your heart breaks into little fragments. Yes, trust is gone, bitterness sets in, anger fills your life, you have a filter over your whole being that colors everything in that light.  Life isn’t sweet.  Your frequency has dropped literally and it sets you up for chronic illness or worse. In that deep pain, many of you think to yourself that finding love again is going to help.  Some are even love junkies, jumping from one relationship to another for that feel good hit that fades out all too quickly.  You find that “all men/women are the same.”  Is there a solution to this? I’m not speaking from theory here, I lived every bit of what so many of my clients and people I speak to have gone through or going through. Instead, it is a process that raises the frequency by eliminating those dark, low energy emotions directed toward the old relationship or your ex-partner. Coming out the other side meant for me reframing what my time with my ex- meant, it also meant falling back in love with him, who he was for me and what he still is as the father of our children and grandfather of our grandchildren.  In this we are united. How does one go from one to the other? The reframing is one thing, but there’s also a releasing of the ties that bind.  When you carry a low energy emotion, like those I mentioned, anger, sorrow, disappointment, hate, resentment, you are still in a relationship with that person.  You are unable to move forward.  Inviting someone new into your life is virtually impossible because you are still deeply connected to your old partner. Releasing those energetic ties, also known as cords, is the first step.  It is not a one time process.  It is much like tending a garden, you have to keep the weeds from growing big and taking over your garden.  I wake up and cut cords every morning.  As soon as I do, I feel lighter and brighter.  It’s a great practice. The second step energetically is to release the contracts and agreements.  This means not only the formal dissolution of a marriage contract, but it is also the emotional dissolution of all other agreements, such as “I agree to let you blame me for things that I didn’t do.”  Some of us have that self-punishing thing going and we choose someone that needs to blame others. And last, a release of any karma, what some people call the agreement we enter life with another spirit or being.  It isn’t a system of punishment like some think and karma is voluntary, not dictated by some diffuse entity.  You chose to take it on. A simple reframe of the experience with someone good or bad, could help tremendously.  If you ask yourself if you are better off having had that person in your life, even if it was to learn some difficult but important lessons, then your response is gratitude.  Why? Look at it this way, that person, your former partner, did not enter the relationship with you to make you miserable.  He or she wanted it to work in the worst way.  They wanted the same loving, close, intimate connection that you long for.  There are lots of reasons it wasn’t achieved.  It’s not necessary to go into that here. The bottom line is, whatever terrible behavior they are doing or going through, it has nothing to do with you and everything to do with them.  Stop taking it personally.
