Today, I'm honored to share a conversation with Minna Salami—author, social critic, and senior fellow at The New Institute. This exchange was recorded during the Fugitive Futures Summit I co-hosted in February 2025. I'm sharing it here because of the powerful resonance between Minna's work and the questions we hold on this podcast. Her book Sensuous Knowledge: A Black Feminist Approach for Everyone proposes a liberatory way of knowing that's embodied, relational, and rooted in both thought and feeling. Drawing on African cosmologies and feminist philosophy, Minna challenges the dominance of Euro-patriarchal systems and invites us toward a more holistic worldview. We explore this sensuous way of knowing—and its deep relevance to masculinity. We speak to the adolescent forms of masculine power so common in leadership today, and ask how a more mature, rooted masculinity might emerge through depth and inner listening.UPCOMING OFFERINGSSpeaking of pathways of mature masculinity, men are invited to check out my online trainings and in-person events. The Deep Masculine - 12 week online journey to repattern your relationship to sex, soul and purpose. Begin anytime. Awakening The Wild Erotic - A men's ritual initiation into the archetype of The Lover. We have two upcoming weekends: * July 25-27 - Montreal, Canada* Aug 22-24 - Vancouver IslandAll folks are invited to explore Iron John: A Mythic Story about Men.Would love to hear your comments on my conversation with Minna! Watch the best scene script reading: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GT_ztVSLtb0 Get to know the writer: What is your screenplay about? This is the tale of the immortal Vampire Goddess Lilitu of ancient lore and her near human lover Dougal, their three identical red haired daughters and an oblivious species known as humanity. What genres does your screenplay fall under? Science Fiction/Fantasy Why should this screenplay be made into a movie? Since I first took up the pen to write this story I have watched as rewrites of successful films and sequels and prequels have graced our screens, some enhanced by more seasoned writing and special effects while others show little imagination or creativity and relying on the name of it's original. This story has no comparison. How would you describe this script in two words? Sensuous thriller What movie have you seen the most times in your life? Hard to answer. I had a mother, have a wife and daughter. Now grandchildren, so you're looking at Sound of Music verses Willie Wonka (the original), or numerous episodes of Bluey. What do you want? What do you really want? The cyber Monday sales have been flashing items, workshops, experiences that we could possibly want, that we should want, that we somehow need.In one of my Sanghas we are exploring a text called The Eight Realizations of Great Beings. This past week we have been exploring the nature of desire. The invitation to explore is part of what I love about the Zen Buddhist tradition. What is it like to bring a non-judgmental attention to the ordinary and natural experience of desire? To your relationship to desire?Sometimes desire carries a lot of shame, I want things that aren't good for me or that I was told I shouldn't want.Or confusion, I was told that my wanting was wrong, selfish, sinful. Some of us may have distanced ourselves from desire. Others may feel that our desires drive our lives in unhelpful ways.If we look closely we see that desire animates us. Desire fuels our life, seeds our dreams, feeds us, motivates many actions and can open the gate to actual pleasure, satisfaction, gratitude, compassion and connection. This podcast is a meditation on desire. It's an invitation to reflect on your relationship to desire and to explore how the energy of desire is linked to compassion and interconnection. As I was reflecting on desire I listened to an interview with Bayo Akomolafe called From the Skin of Things to the Bone of Things, the interview was moving and spanned many topics at some point he posited.I wonder what a sensuous solidarity looks like, maybe it lives somewhere between the cracks of problems and solutions. I wonder what a sensuous becoming monstrous looks like—I wonder what it means to shape-shift. I wonder what the humpless camel said as it approached the desert. It wasn't how do I solve this desert, maybe the solution for the desert is to shape-shift, to grow humps—to become the desert.I heard him say that and I felt a yes well up inside me. This is how desire becomes compassion, this is how longing opens to non-separation, this is how our vows intertwine with the vows of each other and the great earth. A sensuous solidarity is another name for bodhicitta.Deep love for all beings and this world. To close, I'd like to share a poem by Mary Oliver. I consider this a capping phrase to this meditation on desire. An offering and a gift to a heart that is learning to love one's self and this beautiful, heart-breaking world. To Begin With, the Sweet Grassby Mary OliverI.Will the hungry ox stand in the field and not eatof the sweet grass? Will the owl bite off its own wings? Will the lark forget to lift its body in the air orforget to sing? Will the rivers run upstream?Behold, I say—beholdthe reliability and the finery and the teachingsof this gritty earth gift.II.Eat bread and understand comfort.Drink water, and understand delight.Visit the garden where the scarlet trumpetsare opening their bodies for the hummingbirdswho are drinking the sweetness, who arethrillingly gluttonous. For one thing leads to another.Soon you will notice how stones shine underfoot.Eventually tides will be the only calendar you believe in.And someone's face, whom you love, will be as a starboth intimate and ultimate, and you will be both heart-shaken and respectful. And you will hear the air itself, like a beloved, whisper:oh, let me, for a while longer, enter the twobeautiful bodies of your lungs.III.The witchery of livingis my whole conversationwith you, my darlings. All I can tell you is what I know.Look, and look again. This world is not just a little thrill for the eyes. It's more than bones. It's more than the delicate wrist with its personal pulse. It's more than the beating of the single heart. It's praising. It's giving until the giving feels like receiving. You have a life—just imagine that! You have this day, and maybe another, and maybestill another.IV.Someday I am going to ask my friend Paulus, the dancer, the potter,to make me a begging bowlwhich I believemy soul needs. And if I come to you,to the door of your comfortable housewith unwashed clothes and unclean fingernails, will you put something into it?I would like to take this chance.I would like to give you this chance.V.We do one thing or another; we stay the same, or wechange.Congratulations, ifyou have changed.VI.Let me ask you this.Do you also think that beauty exists for somefabulous reason? And, if you have not been enchanted by this adventure—your life—what would do for you?VII.What I loved in the beginning, I think, was mostly myself.Never mind that I had to, since somebody had to.That was many years ago.Since then I have gone out from my confinements, though with difficulty.I mean the ones that thought to rule my heart.I cast them out, I put them on the mush pile. They will be nourishment somehow (everything is nourishmentsomehow or another). And I have become the child of the clouds, and of hope.I have become the friend of the enemy, whoever that is.I have become older and, cherishing what I have learned,I have become younger. And what do I risk to tell you this, which is all I know?Love yourself. Then forget it. Then, love the world.…Thanks for reading friends! This dharma talk was given during Monday Night Meditation. You can find out more below.I'm Amy Kisei. This strange thing called ‘knowledge' has always been a battleground in educational conversations - for example, in lots of loud calls for “knowledge-rich” curricula! Personally I'm very much in favour of knowledge and knowing, part of the buzz of following curiosity and inquiries! It's just the KIND of knowledge and knowing that we have been conditioned to value over others that I have an issue with! Minna Salami has been deeply challenging this hierarchy of knowing through her extensive work and amazing concept and book of the same title, Sensuous Knowledge. Her work coming from the tradition of African Feminism is to trouble the hierarchies, not simply invert them. Minna Salami is a Nigerian-Finnish and Swedish feminist author, social critic and currently Program Chair at THE NEW INSTITUTE. She is the author of Can Feminism Be African? (forthcoming Harper Collins) and Sensuous Knowledge: A Black Feminist Approach for Everyone (Bloomsbury 2020) which has been translated into multiple languages. Minna has also co-authored children's books and written content on feminism for numerous anthologies as well as educational textbooks. A leading voice of contemporary feminism, she has drawn over a million readers to her multiple award-winning blog MsAfropolitan.com. Her writing can be found in the Guardian, Project Syndicate, Al Jazeera, and The Philosopher, and many others. She is a frequent speaker and lecturer including at some of the world's most prominent institutions such as the UN, EU, Oxford Union, Cambridge Union, Yale University, and the Singularity University at NASA. She has worked as a Research Associate and Editor at Perspectiva, consulted governments on gender equality, written school curricula, and curated cultural events at The Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Minna is a Full Member of the Club of Rome, a BMW Foundation Responsible Leader and sits on the council of The Royal Institute of Philosophy and the boards of The African Feminist Initiative at Pennsylvania State University, The Interdisciplinary Journal for the Study of the Sahel, and is an associate with Perspectiva. She has served as chair for the House of Beautiful Business, a judge for the One World Media Awards, a nominator for the Prince Claus Foundation and the Princess of Asturias Foundation. An alumni of Lund University and SOAS University, Minna has lived in Nigeria, Sweden, Spain, and New York and now lives between London and Hamburg. And Jehovah saw that he went aside to see, and God called unto him out of the midst of the bramble, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Behold me! And He said, Draw not nigh hither; pull off thy shoes from upon thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest a ground of holiness is this. And He said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses covered his faces, because he was afraid to look upon God. And Jehovah said, Seeing I have seen the affliction of My people, which is in Egypt, and I have heard their cry from before their taskmasters; for I have known their sorrows; and I am come down to liberate them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to make them come up out of that land unto a land good and broad, unto a land flowing with milk and honey, unto the place of the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite. Exodus 3: 4-8 The saving of the spiritual states in us... Arcana Coelestia 6858... Before the coming of the Lord into the world, evil genii and spirits occupied all that region of heaven to which the spiritual were afterward taken up; for before the coming of the Lord many such roamed at large and infested the good, especially the spiritual who were in the lower earth; but after the coming of the Lord they were all thrust down into their hells, and that region was set free, and was given for an inheritance to those who were of the spiritual church. It has been frequently observed that as soon as any place is left by good spirits it is occupied by evil ones; and that the evil are driven out of it, and as soon as this is done it again passes to those who are in good. AC 6854(2)...They who are called “the spiritual” (who are such as can be regenerated only as to the intellectual part, but not as to the will part, and in whose intellectual part therefore a new will is implanted by the Lord, which will is according to the doctrinal things of faith pertaining to their church); these, namely such spiritual men, were saved only by the Lord's coming into the world. The reason is that the Divine passing through heaven, which was the Divine Human before the Lord's coming, could not reach them, because the doctrinal things of their church were for the most part not true, and consequently the good which is of the will was not good (see n. 6427). As these could be saved only by the coming of the Lord, and thus could not before be raised into heaven, therefore they were meanwhile kept in the lower earth, in places there which in the Word are called “pits;” which earth was beset about by the hells where are falsities, by which they were then much infested, and yet were guarded by the Lord. But after the Lord came into the world, and made the Human in Himself Divine, then He delivered those who were there in “pits,” and raised them to heaven; and out of them He also formed the spiritual heaven, which is the second heaven. This is meant by the descent of the Lord to the lower regions, and by the deliverance of those who were bound. AC 6826... “and the angel of Jehovah was seen by him,” signifies the Lord as to the Divine Human; “in a flame of fire out of the midst of the bramble,” signifies love Divine in the truth of memory-knowledge; “and he saw, and behold the bramble burned with fire,” signifies a noticing that the truth of memory-knowledge was full of the good of love Divine; “and the bramble was in no wise consumed,” signifies Divine truth united to Divine good in the natural 6816. The spirits of Mercury are quite different from the spirits of our earth, for the spirits of our earth care not so much for real things as for material, worldly, bodily, and earthly things. Therefore the spirits of Mercury cannot be together with the spirits of our earth, and so whenever they meet them they flee away; for the spiritual spheres which exhale from the two are almost opposite.

And, we introduce a word of the day (“P-A-L-I-M-P-S-E-S-T”) and pull in references from the dictionary, textbooks, classic novels, and poetry for this one, with hopes of understanding the “waves of hurt” that are packed into this song. To access our full conference library of 200+ fascinating psychology talks and interviews (with certification), please visit: https://twumembers.com Imagination has a valued place in psychotherapy. The images found in memories, relationship entanglements and future fantasies are the raw material of therapeutic work. And yet, faced with a significant dream or transference projection it can be difficult to resist the temptation of a clever interpretation. In this way, imagining is often eclipsed by thinking and the transformative potential of imaginative experience itself is neglected. This talk by Allan Frater will be of interest to therapists who want to work more holistically with images as images. Instead of treating images as symbols pointing to meaning elsewhere, the talk presents an image-centric approach, including: — A broad understanding of imagination as present in all perceptions, actions and relationships (not just as pictures ‘inside the mind'). — A ‘waking dream' method applicable to generic work with memories, the transference and future fantasies as well as art-therapy and active-imagination approaches. — Imaginal dialogues. — A non-interpretative patterning which links image work in the consulting room to the on-going story of self and world in everyday life. The result is an appreciation of imagination, not just as a means to rational insight but as an embodied imaginal sensibility at the heart of human potential and creativity. If you enjoy this, you can learn more about Allan's work by visiting: www.wildimagination.uk. --- This session was recorded as part of our Holistic Psychotherapy Summit in January 2023. “You cannot say how many cubic metres make up courage, or what kind of wires you need to construct freedom. What kind of lab do you go into to measure relationships between people?” ~ Minna SalamiWhen Minna, my guest today, said this, I got shivers up and down my spine (as I did many times, reading her brilliant book, Sensuous Knowledge) as a deeply intuitive woman raised in a hyper-rational world… or as Minna calls it, a world rooted in euro-patriarchal knowledge. Minna Salami is a Nigerian, Finnish, and Swedish feminist author and social critic. Her research focuses on Black feminist theory, contemporary African thought, and the politics of knowledge production, and today we're exploring Sensuous Knowledge is a model of knowledge rooted in the dynamic landscape of Black feminist thought - one that empowers, enlivens, and liberates, through embodied insight. We explore:How the menstrual cycle is a source of profound, disruptive different ways of knowing. What happens in a world which only values that which can be quantified, measured and put into hierarchies, rather than honouring the knowledge that emerges from within our bodies and ourselves. Frasier was a decrepit old circus lion whose best days were far behind him, or at least that was what his caregivers believed. While he wasn't much to look at, he proved popular with the lionesses. Frasier showed the world that it was better to be a lover than a fighter by surprisingly fathering 35 cubs during the last 18 months of his life. His virility made him famous worldwide. Fan clubs, Frasier merchandise, songs, and a movie soon followed. In the five episode series, Kosha Countdown to Earth Day, today is Manomayakosha, the thinking, feeling, sensing, earth body. It's poetic that both hosts arrived, ready to record, after not having enough sleep and feeling a bit off in the mind. Since these are casual conversations and perfection is not the aspiration, they showed up as they were, playing with language and memory as aspects of Manomayakosha. Nature is a complete system that reflects our own experiences. When looked at through various filters, the view becomes fuller. The limitations of language yield to other forms of communication, new maps lead to deeper understanding.Following are sources and quotes used in the show:Book: The Spell of the SensuousReview of The Spell of the Sensuous by Thomas Berry, author of “The Dream of the Earth”“The outer world of nature is what awakens our inner world in all its capacities for understanding, affection and aesthetic appreciation. The wind, the rain, the mountains and rivers, the woodlands and meadows and all their inhabitants; we need these perhaps even more for our psyche than for our physical survival. No one that I know of has presented all this with the literary skill as well as the understanding that we find in this work of David Abram. It should be one of the most widely read and discussed books of these times.”Because it was very briefly mentioned, here's one of many links to the Lost Colony of Roanoke.Quotes:According to the yoga philosophy, Manomayakosha is the seat of memory and emotions. –- Yoga JournalThe practice of yoga and meditation is believed to help clear the blockages in the Moanomayakosha and improve memory retention. -- The Art of LivingThe practice of pranayama, or breathing exercises, is believed to help balance the Manomayakosha and improve memory function. -- The Chopra CenterThe Manomayakosha is also associated with the senses, which play a role in the process of memory retrieval. -- The Yoga InstituteThe beauty of nature can inspire artists to create works that reflect their inner thoughts and emotions. -- The Artistic and Creative Power of Mother Nature” by A. These states of hell are present for all of us Arcana Coelestia 6310. The interiors of man are distinct according to degrees by means of derivations, and according to these degrees are also the lights. The internal sensuous, which is nearest the sensuous things of the body, has the most gross light. This light it has been given me to discern by much experience, and I have noticed that whenever I sank into this light, falsities and evils of many kinds presented themselves, and even things scandalous against heavenly and Divine things, besides things filthy and foul. The reason is that this light rules in the hells, and by means of it chiefly do the hells flow into man. When a man is in this light, his thought is in nearly the same light as that in which is his external sight, and is then almost in the body. Men who are in this light are to be called the Sensuous, for they do not think beyond the sensuous things of the body. What is beyond these they neither perceive nor believe, believing only that which they see and touch. In this light are they who have not at all cultivated things interior, living in neglect and contempt of all things rational and spiritual; and in this light are especially the avaricious and adulterers, and they who have lived in mere pleasures and in disgraceful idleness, and who consequently think what is filthy, and often what is scandalous, about the holy things of the church. Heaven and Hell 362. But the lot of the rich that have not believed in the Divine, and have cast out of their minds the things pertaining to heaven and the church, is the opposite of this. Such are in hell, where filth, misery, and want exist; and into these riches that are loved as an end are changed; and not only riches, but also their very uses, which are either a wish to live as they like and indulge in pleasures, and to have opportunity to give the mind more fully and freely to shameful practices, or a wish to rise above others whom they despise. Such riches and such uses, because they have nothing spiritual, but only what is earthly in them, become filthy; for a spiritual purpose in riches and their uses is like a soul in the body, or like the light of heaven in moist ground; and such riches and uses become putrid as a body does without a soul, or as moist ground does without the light of heaven. Such are those that have been led and drawn away from heaven by riches. Not owning or identifiying with what flows in from hell AC 6308...The order of the influx is that evil spirits first flow in, and the angels disperse their action. That there is such an influx the man does not perceive, because his thought is kept in freedom by means of the equilibration between these two influxes, and because he does not attend to such things; nor could the evil know if they did attend, because with them there is no equilibrium between evil and good. But they who are in good can know it; and they also know from the Word that there is something within which fights against the evil and falsity with them, and that the spiritual man fights against the natural; thus the angels, who are in man's interiors and in his spiritual things, against the evil spirits who are in his exteriors and in his natural things; and it is also from this that the church is called militant. But the evil which flows into the thought from the evil spirits, does the man no harm if he does not receive it; but if he receives it and transfers it from the thought into the will, he makes it his own; and he then goes over to the side of the infernal spirits, and withdraws from the angels of heaven. This is what the Lord teaches when He says that the things which enter into a man do not make him unclean; but the things which go out of him, because these go forth from the heart, that is, from the will (Mark 7:14-23). Cast into hell 6321. That there is angelic influx, and that without it man cannot live, has been given to know by experience.

I've mentioned this book numerous times on the pod. It's fair to say that David Abram's The Spell of the Sensuous and Robin Wall Kimmerer's Braiding Sweetgrass are the two books that really kicked off the idea for In the Weeds. And it feels like time to dig into Spell. All the more so since my current episodes are exploring the question “how did we get here?” Not only how did we materially arrive at our current environmental crisis but how did we, in the West, develop a culture that led to this mess, a culture that separates the human sphere from the natural world?Environmentalists have been debating this question for some time and, as Abram himself acknowledges, there is not just one answer, though he does propose an intriguing one in Spell that I talked about in our last episode: that the invention of the alphabet might have had something to do with it. To discuss The Spell of the Sensuous, I reached out to Trevien Stanger, instructor of environmental studies and science at St. Michael's College in Vermont and all around smart and thoughtful guy.We examine the two influences that support Abram's shift from a mechanistic to an animist view of the world: phenomenology, a philosophical movement started by the German philosopher Edmund Husserl in the early 20th century, and the teachings of indigenous shamans that Abram encountered during his travels as an itinerant sleight-of-hand magician in Southeast Asia. Most of all, we try to understand what it would mean to experience the world the way that Abram would want us to, as a dynamic and relationally-rich encounter with the more-than-human.There's a lot to unpack and we take our time, so we only get about a third of the way into the book. We will continue our discussion in an upcoming episode. And, yes, I have a cold :)

Ron Wakkary is a professor of design at Simon Fraser University's School of Interactive Arts and Technology in Canada. He is also a professor, holding the Chair of Design for More Than Human-Centered Worlds, in the industrial design department at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands.Ron is the founder of the design research studio Everyday Design Studio (EDS). At EDS, he works with Will Odom and an evolving cast of students to produce multi-disciplinary design research that is highly engaged with the practice and craft of design. For UX designers and industrial designers looking for ideas and inspiration from social sciences, humanities, and philosophy executed in design artifacts, the work from EDS is a fantastic resource.Ron recently published the book Things We Could Design: For More Than Human-Centered Worlds via MIT Press. The book packages his research focused on “post-humanist design” rather than human-centered design, bringing non-human stakeholders like nature, climate, and biological diversity into the focus of design methodology.Transcript: https://designdisciplin.com/ron:: Related Links+ Book: Design Research through Practice by Koskinen et al.: https://geni.us/design-research-thr+ Book: Discipline & Punish by Michel Foucault: https://geni.us/discipline-and-punish+ Everyday Design Studio: https://eds.siat.sfu.ca/+ Book: In Praise of Shadows by Junichiro Tanizaki: https://geni.us/in-praise-of-shadows+ Book: Reinventing Organizations by Frederic Laloux: https://geni.us/reinventing-org+ Book: Staying with the Trouble by Donna Haraway: https://geni.us/staying-with-the-troub+ Book: The Age of Surveillance Capitalism by Shoshana Zuboff: https://geni.us/age-of-surveillance+ Book: The Overstory by Richard Powers: https://geni.us/the-overstory+ Book: The Spell of the Sensuous by David Abram: https://geni.us/spell-of-the-sensuous+ Book: Things We Could Design by Ron Wakkary: https://geni.us/things-we-could-design+ Book: Vibrant Matter by Jane Bennett: https://geni.us/vibrant-matter+ Book: What Things Do by Peter-Paul Verbeek: https://geni.us/what-things-doFull list of related links: https://designdisciplin.com/ron :: Connect with Design Disciplin+ Website: http://designdisciplin.com+ Podcast: http://podcast.designdisciplin.com+ Instagram: http://instagram.com/designdisciplin/+ Twitter: http://twitter.com/designdisciplin/+ YouTube: http://youtube.com/designdisciplin:: Connect with Ron+ Twitter: https://twitter.com/ronwakkary+ Everyday Design Studio: http://eds.siat.sfu.ca/:: Episode Bookmarks00:00:00 Intro00:01:26 Ron's Story00:13:35 Research through Design00:18:54 Ron's Practice00:22:26 The Core Message in Ron's Book00:27:30 How To Put the Book in Practice00:34:45 "Designer as Biography / Force / Speaking Subject / Intensities and Origins"00:51:57 The Scope of Design vs. Other Disciplines00:58:50 "Nomadic Practice"01:21:55 Book Recommendations 01:27:00 What's Next for Ron01:33:00 Closing
“Letters have power,” Johanna Drucker tells me. But what is the nature of this power and how did it all begin? Unlike writing, the alphabet was only invented once. Somewhere in Egypt or the Sinai Peninsula, about 4,000 years ago, speakers of a Semitic language adapted Egyptian hieroglyphics to represent the basic phonetic building blocks of their language. All modern alphabets can be traced back to this origin.Johanna Drucker, Distinguished Professor and Breslauer Professor in the Department of Information Studies at UCLA, and author of numerous books, including her most recent, Inventing the Alphabet (University of Chicago Press, 2022), talks to me about this fascinating history, from what archeology has uncovered to the alphabet's central role in information technology. We also discuss a theory put forth by David Abram, in his book, The Spell of the Sensuous, that the alphabet opens “a new distance […] between human culture and the rest of nature,” as it turns our powers of perception inward and focuses our attention on human-made sounds and words. Links to some of the things we discuss: Two key archeological sites where inscriptions of the first alphabet have been found: Serabit el-Khadim and Wadi el-Hol. Sandstone sphinx at the British Museum with Proto-Sinaitic letters. The Acrophonic principle. The Ahiram sarcophogus and shards found in Israel. Unicode. See also in-the-weeds.net.
Hailed as a “blistering new literary voice”, Minna Salami is a Nigerian-Finnish and Swedish writer and social critic, and the founder of the multiple award-winning blog, MsAfropolitan, which connects feminism with critical reflections on contemporary culture from an Africa-centred perspective. Traci talks with Minna following the publication of her new book, Sensuous Knowledge, which was described by Bernadine Evaristo as “intellectual soul food”. Their conversation is a deep, rich and wonderful romp through Minna's muti-faceted identity and how her experiences have shaped her writings on Black feminism, Minna's fresh cultural insights and the need to create space for growth and grappling in today's world. Episode Timeline [00:09] Intro [00:57] Meet Minna [2:38] The five(!) languages Minna speaks, and how they have shaped the way she thinks of Black feminism [10:55] how Blackness is tied to the African American experience [14:50] the impact Minna wants to create through her writing [20:26] Making room for growth and grappling [26:00] Minna's intuitive writing process [43:12] Having ownership of your inner world [45:56] Closing [46:35] Outro Resources Mentioned Sensuous Knowledge (Minna's book) Standout Quotes “Blackness right now is very much tied to the African American experience and the kind of definitions of Blackness as African Americans. It formulates them. And the way that Blackness would be formulated in a kind of Diasporic sensibility outside of America and in the African continent certainly overlaps and is connected. There would be context, sort of dialectic contexts that are siblings, but there are also differences.” (Minna) “I think the closest analogy to how I feel when I'm writing is a bit like an archaeologist might feel when they're trying to find some very specific object and they have to sort of excavate everything that's in the way and remove obstacles in order to gain the kind of clarity of how they might find their objects.” (Minna) “a personal process of growth is of course completely tied to a collective process of growth.” (Minna) “I also started the blog out of frustration and rage, maybe even because of the state of exclusion that Black women face, especially in the ideas world, which is a world that I very much see myself as contributing to, as well as the kind of feminist theory and feminist activism world.” (Minna) “I think there's this invitation that how we move from our unconscious bias is that we do have to begin to learn a different kind of knowledge and we have to make it a regular practice where we're listening to more stories, the land, people from different viewpoints, our own bodies.” (Traci) “...is wanting to think up or to conjure a way of knowing that is simultaneously utopian and pragmatic. There's a lot of radical ideas in the world, many of which I am really inspired by and thankful for but many that I also can feel are impractical and I sometimes approach more as poems or something to kind of plant a seed of something.” (Minna) “I will say that the inner world and the things that you choose to pay attention to, things that you choose to be preoccupied with. Those are the spaces which have not been taken over… And so it's very important, it's incredibly important that you cater to that space and that you have ownership of that space. And it's by no means a space that isn't full of complex feelings. It's that inner world where joy resides, but also sorrow and suffering. But it's the space you own.” (Minna) Connect: Find | Sidewalk Talk At sidewalk-talk.org On Instagram: @sidewalktalkorg On Twitter: @sidewalktalkorg Find | Traci Ruble At Traciruble.com On Instagram: @TraciRubleMFT On Twitter: @TraciRubleMFT On Facebook: @TraciRubleMFT Find | Minna Salami At https://msafropolitan.com/ On Instagram: @minnasalami_ SUBSCRIBE TO THIS PODCAST On Apple Podcasts On Google Podcasts On Spotify
Today's show is a real treat! It's a rich conversation about being grounded and using divination as a tool. We discuss those things and much more with our exciting guest. Join us! Téo Montoya is a human design analyst, metamodern myth mender, and indigenous futurist living in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He is also an enrolled member of the Lipan Apache Band of Texas. His work focuses on synthesizing cosmological and spiritual systems, myths, archetypes, and modalities to find ways of supporting an emerging world in crisis through human development, ecological literacy, and reciprocity with our more-than-human kin. In today's conversation, Téo explains myth mending and the concept of meta-modernism, along with indigenous futurism, how he defines it, and why it's important in this day and age. His work is important because it is on the leading edge of where we go from this current time of ecological and social crisis. Show Highlights: A brief overview of how Téo's spiritual path unfolded, thanks in part to his unusual mentor of ten years How understanding human design brought an understanding of the different ways of being human and conscious Why Téo's work and focus falls between the esoteric and the practical spaces Why the current “meaning crisis” is contributing to a psychological health crisis Why we need myths and systems that help us understand who we are and where we fit into the complexity of our world How we move through developmental stages of an intersubjective understanding of reality The difference in modernism, postmodernism, and meta-modernism The work of myth mending in helping people rebuild their meaning-making muscles The basics of human design, which is a synthesis of multiple modalities that helps people bring their fullness into the world A look at Téo's chart and what it shows for him The interesting space of being “in-between” spirituality and practicality How Téo explains indigenous futurism as a narrative blueprint for the future How we can remain hopeful and aware of the infinite possibilities for the future, even in the midst of the terrible things around us How the incarnation cross in human design is our energetic purpose in the world Hear Téo's answers to rapid-fire questions about helpful advice, grounding habits, favorite hot beverage, last meal on earth, morning routine, favorite books, and what's bringing him joy right now. Today we will be speaking with EWP adjunct faculty Sophia Reinders, about her academic and personal journey from phenomenology, to Jungian depth psychology, expressive arts and eco-arts therapy to ecopsychology and evolutionary cosmology. She shares with us the life changing experience of discovering her earth soul at the depth and as the depth of the psyche, embedded in earth. This led her to a deep and passionate exploration of the intricate intertwinement of the human community with the more than human earth and all its life forms. The felt-sense of this encompassing perspective now finds expression in her teaching and her pedagogy as a scholar-practitioner. Drawing on the ecological imagination and guiding students in multimodal practices of creative embodiment, she encourages a shift away from a human-centered towards an earth-cherishing consciousness within which to consider and experience the realm of the human, be this within or beyond academic pursuits. Sophia asks us to think about our senses as a “palette of embodied languages”. Multi-modal sensory awareness, she says, deepens our experience of aliveness and discloses perception as participation with the earth. She sees participatory perception as a form of holistic, embodied understanding in which feeling, intuiting, imagining, thinking and visioning come together and enrich both academic and non-academic pursuits. To end the podcast, Sophia guides Stephen and I through a sensory awareness practice, opening us to experience how every act of perception is a creative practice, and the transformative power of cultivating an alchemical reciprocity between psyche and nature, awakening to a deeper embodied knowing.
