Do you think the price of food is high? The NZ Commerce Commission recently ruled that things needed to be looked at, but no major split of the two major grocery suppliers was required. What do you think, is NZ sitting at an empty table? The cost of food has become questioned in some cases and is certainly affecting the general populous. We have heard plenty of snippets in the news, are you following the story? This is why we are talking to Ernie Newman, of TUANZ fame who fought for the Telecommunication Users to achieve better competition and better pricing. While the current report from the commission doesn't go far enough in Ernie's appreciation for price reduction we have to find out why? Is it the duopoly, is it covid affected supply chains, we have to find out what the next steps are for our country, lead by a range of people including Ernie. With a covid affected workforce, now is even a more important time to ensure availability of healthy food and reasonable prices – what do you think? #YARNLIVE #AFQY

“What problem are we solving?” Thats the first question we all ask when looking at a start up... For me the purpose of this interview is to discuss the acceleration of NZ's maturity in SaaS as one our greatest opportunities to raise our economy and people. Termed the weightless export, SaaS is something we can continue to create, develop, exit and reinvest. Personally I feel NZ is on the tipping point, with a range of events combining to put us on the world stage: - Xero: The anchor of Kiwi SaaS success - The sales of Vend, Timely and Sequent - Arguably the profile we gained from our pandemic response - Rocket Labs multiple successes and manned spaceflight - Govt mind shift from shovel ready to keyboard ready - Influx of funding So we'll be looking at our SaaS approach, from the perspective of a Kiwi's with the following global experience: - Been part of growing a global unicorn; Canva (now valued at $40billion) as an early employee and the first Head of People helping to scale to 200. - Drove operational excellence, helping Airtasker (marketplace) become profitable, go global and go public. - Been the COO at Simply Wall St (Fintech), as it hit an inflection point setting up the right foundations for it to accelerate and grow. - Is currently an investor and mentor in Startmate, Australia/New Zealand's premiere accelerator - Has had the opportunity to consult and advise many startups as they navigate their way to success, leading to the creation of his own company Phase One Ventures We look forward to opening up the conversation and digging into the key insights and observations that Mahesh Muralidhar shares and invite you to take the opportunity to ask questions through the comments. #SaaS #SaaSSIVE SaaSSIVE #YARNLIVE AFQY - A Few Quiet Yarns
New Zealand is facing a critical skill shortage and we have the answers within NZ, but are we looking at them, or just applying the same old thinking that got us to where we are right now? We are going to challenge this with one of NZ's most heralded outside the box “doers” and we say “doer” rather than “thinker” deliberately because Dorenda Britten Ltd. has spent her life challenging status quo and asking the tough questions. The problem is the door hasn't always been open as our traditional education system doesn't enable them to progress through to what they could become, it's a hangover from the days of it being considered a disability and the system isn't designed to accommodate them let alone develop them We need to broaden our understanding of diversity to include diversity of mind, in this case, dyslexia. This is important in designing anything, including systems, services and products. Because it has been demonstrated internationally that we need to value new approaches. Dyslexic people are notable for bringing creativity and empathy to design teams. The stats tell us that 1 in 10 New Zealanders possesses a dyslexic mind. These people are, at best, underemployed, and frequently regarded as unemployable. Our focus is currently on design and development teams in the tech sector. The tech sector is facing chronic skill shortages that will not be solved in the short term by the tertiary institutes, nor is it likely to be solved by the loosening of border restrictions to the degree that the problem requires.
Join us for a kōrero with Donnamaree Ryder who has created a future from little. With a passion for education from her mum as the foundation that saw her become the first Māori with a Masters in Finance which lead her towards a global financial career before stepping into tech creating world class financial reporting system for Fonterra. This was the genesis for her to create Tania.ai a voice assisted software that provides financial reporting for a business. Supported by Craig Hudson and Xero, Donnamaree went on to build Tania.ai which is named after her mother who gave her the passion for education. As a beta user of Tania.ai I am personally gaining a financial education as the system prompts me with reports that teach me while providing the report I've requested. We will hear all about Donnamaree's journey, "The road trip to the Nasdaq" ~ which is an inspiration to all! UPDATE: a new feature for tania.ai will be released on our Kōreo LIVE! Note - this will be our last Kōrero Live found on my personal Linkedin profile and all future will be found on the AFQY - A Few Quiet Yarns Linkedin Company Page. #KōreroLIVE #YarnLIVE #RoadtripToNASDAQ
Reaching the top of our game is what we aim for. To always be challenged and always learning means we continue to enjoy and continue to progress. Over the years of running AFQY I have been asked by many young IT person to help the source a CIO Mentor, someone who can help them understand the path to come, provide insights to help them achieve the same. So when Tony Vodanovich announced his new and first time CIO role I thought, let's get a run down while its fresh – not only for younger IT people, but also for school aged kids (admittedly their parents might show them this) as we want to inspire and encourage future generations into technology – so this will be about that pathway, the decisions made and options taken. With great thanks well hear from Tony Vodanovich, CIO Mercy Ascot about his pathway to CIO.
Recently it was World Menopause Day and we spoke with JKP the founder of PowerPause and as a result we had many viewers commenting which lead to this session – The Husband's perspective. Of course for many the word menopause is hard enough to say, but in the same sentence with husband might really turn attention and that's great, as that's our intent – to continually shine a light on causes that need attention, to help them shift from social taboo to everyday discussions, because of the negative impact they are having while not being talked about. Menopause can be misunderstood and often a woman herself can not even aware of what is happening to her and it can lead to anxiety, depression, and in 20% suicide. Perimenopuase suicide is the highest killer of woman aged 45 to 54 and sadly you may have just read it for the first time here. So with great thanks from all husbands and wife's, men and women we will hear from (Mr Smith) John and Bronda Smith about their experience and aim to give men some tools and encouragement to have the discussions they may well need to have, with their beloved to help and support, identify and treat so that the effects don't unnecessarily change lives.
Covid in the UK – looks all rosey when we see a packed Cardiff Arms park for the recent All Blacks test match, but many are not aware that they are experiencing 70+ deaths, 1000 hospitalisations and an average of 40,000 cases a day... Which sounds horrific by the numbers, and in contrast to the scenes of the test match or even Creamfields a large scale outdoor concert – which all look very attractive while the statistics don't. So we've invited Michelle Henry who we met via AFQY Cafe to join us from the UK and give us a run down of what life is like off the TV News and how day to day things are done in these circumstances.
The Digital Divide is a clear and present problem, brought to life by Covid as while those of us on the right side of the Digital Divide are enjoying video calls and online shopping, banking, booking doctors and homeschooling and other services we access online, there are 100-300,000 who are not. Aside from the day to day conveniences, the present risks are people are not able to access Covid related information, such as places of interest, and where this project started, Education. Education is the pathway for any under privileged or underserved community to have the opportunity to move out of that position, hence ensuring education doesn't stop due to ACCESS (one of the four Digital Divide Pillars) We are going to hear from the R.A.D. team from the inception as a school project by Owyn Aitken and Hadi Daoud through to being a fully fledged business with Rebecca Harris, Bronwyn Scott and Victoria MacLennan's governance and support making it all happen. Get your old laptop's ready to ship to Recycle A Device and learn how they recycle them to bring Kiwis across the digital divide by providing access.
Hear from a once-upon a time 'Vaccination Fence Sitter' about this whole Vaccination picture about how it feels to be caught up in the washing machine of Aotearoa's big debate, and the approach they think will work for helping the Fence Sitters make their decision. It's a bit different form the Govt mandates, Super-Salesy-Saturday, the anti-vaxxers (a seperate group not to be mistaken with Fence Sitters) and the resulting diatribe which has accumulatively created what Kiwi's refer to as the Great Divide. We've almost become a nation like Dr Seuss's book 'The Sneetches on the Beaches' - those who have the stars on their belly and the Sneetches without - those with vaccination can work, go to bars and clubs and events, and those without... can't. Hear from Te Omeka about his journey and perhaps this will resonate with you or your friends and family who may also be Fence Sitters and need to work through your thinking before making a decision, just as T' did. Here is a sample already indicating a high interest in his approach: https://bit.ly/31eMsKp #YarnLive #TalanoaLive #Vaccination
LONG COVID - Aotearoa only really started to hear about this at the 1pm briefings recently, when Dr Bloomfield acknowledged that 37% of Covid patients will experience some kind of longer term symptoms. Much of the NZ MOH response has been on the race towards 90% vaccination so we can roam free... The thing is, while our risks are greatly minimised with vaccination, "1 jab keeps you out of hospital, 2 jabs keeps you out of ICU...but what's the deal with Long Covid? We'll speak with Jenene Crossan, (and possibly her # 1 supporter Scottie Chapman) the 37th Kiwi to get Covid "the original strain" back in March 2020, and who suffered from Long Covid for more than 18 months. The long term impacts after a constellation of multi-factory symptoms is still unknown, but the group of people suffering from this is growing by the day. Jenene has collaborated with Dr Anna Brooks of The University of Auckland to look at Long Covid and the impact on our immune cells, a unique study that is well positioned in Aotearoa due to the low levels of Covid thus far. There are now over 1000 Kiwis suffering from Long Covid and the prospect of this growing exponentially, particularly in areas where inequity exist, it's critical that we really look under the hood and get a handle on this impact this can have on our communities, our whanau, our economy and health system. We have asked one of the key patient advocates, Jenene, to share about it to educate and make us aware of what's happening and why it's important.
Digital Twins help us see the intangible process and really come to the "frontlines" as we'll hear from Sally Garrett from NZDF about how creating Digital Twins of current state enabled change through simulation before implementation, to test what would be most efficient and successful for the preferred future state outcomes. Neil Calvert says, "Its captured in the tool, its not a bunch of sticky notes on a wall – it is captured representing the process straight away" This gives everyone a single source of the truth and enables every stakeholder to see not just hear the process, removing interpretation mistakes and speeding up successful change with "Evidence based decision making" as Sally refers to it. We'll have a good look at how LINQ is helping the NZDF and the benefits gained so you can see how Digital Twins enable successful change.
“Data is the new oil” is an overused cliche, but by itself it isn't always as consumable and doesn't tell the true story. We recently had Jon Foote on our Talanoa Live; sharing their data-visualisation of the Covid Lockdowns which told the story of how each Lockdown performed quite clearly. It was a great example for how "data becomes oil", once visualised with context. We all know the other cliche, "a picture says a 1000 words", and visualised data paints a clear picture of whats happening. We'll discuss the benefits of visualising your data to turn it into information that can help your business to make better, more informed decisions, faster. Hear from the team at Flock Consulting including Jeff Komen and Mark Turner on what they do to deliver actionable insights for their clients and some of the work they have done to visualise the Covid case numbers here in NZ and globally. We ponder the concept of modern data platforms, self-service reporting and the data driven organisation
World Menopause Day - bet you didn't think we'd ever be talking about this 10 years ago, hell some might not expect us to be talking about it today, but we need to and we will, like we always should have as it's a natural part of life. Largely regarded as one of the last ‘taboo' subjects in the wellbeing stable, Jeanette Kehoe-Perkinson (‘JKP') has been an early champion of the subject since she went through her own experience that affected her career - it's part of the www.powerpause.co.nz story. With Menopuase training now part of the GenderTick certification and Sophie the Countess of Wessex making her Menopuase pledge there is a lot of change picking up pace and with good reason. 20% of Women are severely affected, and Perimenopuase depression is a cause of high numbers of suicide in women aged 45 to 55. We really need to understand and accept this is happening to help women through it safely. Another problem is the early end of careers, also as a result of the effect of menopause. Well hear all about it 3pm on hashtag#WorldMenopauseDay from Jeanette - tune in and be part of positive change. #YARNLIVE #PowerPause
Covid hit and we went crazy buying toilet paper. That's just the tip of the iceberg related to Supply Chains. In this session we will speak with Mike Blanchard FCIPS, a Global Supply Chain specialist who leads in this space. To bring the humour to a harsh reality, what we are looking at is the example of NIDO store which went into liquidation, a brand new concept store where you could see furniture in real life settings. A casualty of their supply chain, from raw materials not being able to get to the manufacturer to finished items of furniture not able to get into the country, resulting in no sales, no revenue, no business. Our yarn will be about supply and the crush Covid put on them causing massive transformations to Smart Supply Chains.
Digital Twins have really hit the world stage with Covid to manage severely affected supply chains. Bryan and Timberlands create Digital Twins for Timberlands long before Digital Twins rocketed onto the globally stage as a way to visualise all information for management and optimisation of operations. In this Yarn Live we will learn about #DigitalTwins from Bryan Graham and how they have been used by Timberlands to manage extensive forestry assets, how they enabled Timberlands to run scenarios for planning and investment. This has been the case for a long time, and so the idea of a digital twin is not new to forestry. However, the level of precision of this is improving with technology, and it goes beyond assets to systems and processes. For Timberlands this means trying to understand what happens within our business, and mapping that out looking for productivity or value add opportunities. This is where Neil Calvert and LINQ Ltd. were able to help and it's grown from needing to do something about the way our fleet of vehicles was managed to manage the forests and all assets. In a fireside chat we will learn more about how Digital Twin have served Timberlands and the work Neil and LINQ have assisted Timberlands through their journey.
The first in a series of A FUTURE WITH COVID where we will have a diverse range of guest speakers, which will be conducted as a Talanoa "Listen and speak with respect", as we all have different views, opinions, experience, knowledge and beliefs - it's our aim to give a voice to all. In this episode we hear from esteemed scientist Sir Ray Avery and respected Kaiwhakahaere Kaye Maree Dunn. Sir Ray Avery is an accomplished scientist in pharmaceuticals and medical devices and respectfully outspoken on aspects of the Covid response from mask wearing to MIQ protocols and epidemiology. Kaye Maree Dunn is a prominent Māori technologist and business leader creating positive change across Aotearoa for Māori and New Zealanders alike. We will aim to learn what each guest speaker's particular focus is and then look to cover off a range of questions which will be standard across all episodes and all speakers and feel free tonasknquestions in comments.
It seems an appropriate way to introduce that Neil Waka, a favourite from our TV screens across News and Current Affairs is announced with the ol' "Breaking News" In this Talanoa LIVE we will be gaining Neil's "5minute focus" with reflection upon the disasters and news he has covered looking back at elements: - Leaders of recovery (any observations, commonalities) - Victims//Survivors/People - and their state (re mental health) - Situations - under fire? - Your feelings, as the presenter of the news and stories, you get a lot closer to the story, how does it affect you good/bad/otherwise We're honoured to host Neil, being a a game changer, a ground breaker as one of the first Maori to break into mainstream television as a news anchor for more than two decades and he is also one of only a handful of news anchors who has held a full-time news presenting role at the two largest mainstream networks, TV3 and TVNZ. Tēnā rawa atu koe! As always we ask that you engage under the guise of Talanoa - to listen and share with respect.
Episode 5 of TALANOA LIVE is with Robett Hollis from San Fran and will bring a very different perspective to the discussion having lived through America's management of covid and being connected to ours. From Snow Boarding Pro to Business Pro, with a profile littered with accomplishments at the other end of the scale to "box packer" as an infamous career counsellor once predicted; Robett is humbly, and to use his words, a weapon. Residing in San Francisco, experiencing a different world and a different covid experience we gain a perspective most are only witnessing though the news. With that we looking forward to his early morning perspective about A Future with Covid on the TALANOA series of A #YARNLIVE Remember the Talanoa series is about "Listening and sharing with respect - so if you don't like, or agree with views expressed thats fine, but remain respectful if you engage.
"The children are our future" is a cliche we've grown up with since forever, now as we look at a future that involves and perhaps revolves around Covid with the recent lockdown reminding us that it's ever-present... What do our future leaders think? We invited Emma Kim (O' Riordan) to organise a group of Manurewa High School students, under the care of Principal Pete Jones to share their views and perspectives. While home schooling now, and dealing with day to day in lockdown, which we'd love to hear about, let's also learn what their thoughts are on the future? Will travel ever resume? Will they see the other side of the world? What questions do they have, what do they wonder about? And what solutions or approaches do they have for solving today's and tomorrow's challenges? As always with TALANOA LIVE, we ask that you 'Listen and share with respect" as we all have different world views, experiences and these are the views of our guests.
With the right perspective challenging times can present opportunities not just problems. Where solutions to the friction create whole new businesses – whether it is knowing where your ride is when you order it or not having to collect a DVD from the store. From investing in, buying into or simply buying innovative solutions, securing intangible assets or creating that thing that people want. In our Yarn LIVE session, we welcome a team of leaders in their fields talking through situations and examples and how to work them, be it: • Managing supplier relationships • Fast tracking new ideas – in an agile way • Identifying lessons learned from other industries and how they might apply to yours. Doing that joint venture to extract the extra value out of your business. Join Simon, Anchali, Andrew, Edwin and Sarah-Jane for industry insights and observations gained from their experience of numerous cross sector deals, various IP protection, and business advice that has helped clients win locally, national and globally against the odds with the biggest companies and opportunities.
Thank goodness for our food supply! We talk to Chris Quin as part of our Talanoa Live series. Episode 7 You will have seen Chris explode on Linkedin and other Social platforms communicating the various key points around the Foodstuffs North Island Limited supply of food to New Zealand. From giving a 10% bonus to staff to sharing the size and scope of the new tech-enabled distribution centre and the brave work of the frontline staff who support the public keeping them feed. Some may not know, but Chris has lead crisis responses before covid, done the sleeping in the office and dealing with everyone from clients to frontline staff - and yes, while covid is a totally different kettle of fish to any company crisis, we'll ask what the lessons and observations were. As with the series, we ask that you listen and share with respect as we get a diverse range of experiences shared to give you insight to different perspectives and be more open to what different people go through.
We are honoured to have Jerome Mika the spokesperson for the AOG Church of Samoa Cluster on Talanoa who is working on behalf of The Cause Collective NZ and working closely with South Seas Healthcare Trust Live Episode 10 Wednesday 8th 10am. With some cases - and let's refer to these people as Kiwi's not cases, with some Kiwis also in hospital, the prospect of "Something not so good eventuating" is bringing home the reality of the situation for all New Zealand, we are talking about the potential loss of life, and while deaths occur daily for a range of reasons, New Zealand has worked to eliminate covid and by comparison to the world remained relatively safe. In our session with Jerome, this is the opportunity for him to share the story of the community as he sees fit, and our opportunity to "Talanoa" - to listen and share with respect. The irony won't be lost that we call our series a pacific word referring to communicating with respect, while this group has received the most disrespectful racist abuse during the hardest of times - with lives at stake and on the media everyday - let's make clear the Church service was on the Sunday with the first case being announced the following Tuesday. Sadly for the community it is an example of a super-spreader but through no fault of their own and like any Kiwis, the nation is (except for a small bunch of small minded people), behind you. Thus, we will hear the insights from Jerome's view looking from the centre out, sharing the community's story with from my perspective a community that has rallied to come together and support the best results for the individuals affected to their community to all of New Zealand, for which we thank you.
We are excited to have Te Pūoho Katene, Executive Director from Te Pūtea Whakatupu Trust in Gisborne on episode 8 on Monday 6th 1.30pm as part of our Talanoa Live series BERL's recent report on the Māori Economy estimated its value at $68bn – but far more important than its value, is how well we put it to use to make people's lives better. Covid could be an economic singularity event; where the rules and trends of the previous regime no longer hold. We get to rewrite them. We should not resign ourselves to “Building Back Better” – we can reimagine what an “Aotearoa Economy” means to us. Beyond “Build Back Better” – reimagining an Aotearoa Economy One that puts people at its heart Where we make mokopuna decisions everyday Where we recontextualise our prosperity, and our fates, into the wellbeing of our environment Māori business has some strong examples of entities striving for these ideals, but more and more these values reflected throughout New Zealand business. Let's make it us. Let's make it ours. As with the series, we ask that you listen and share with respect as we get a diverse range of experiences shared to give you insight to different perspectives and be more open to what different people go through.

Join Patrick O'Doherty from The Inland Revenue as they have A YARN LIVE with host Ryan the Lion about the IRD's response to COVID that kept businesses operating, people paid and society moving. We gained brief insight as they spoke at the CIO Awards when winning the Business Transformation award, sharing some detail about what the team did and went through to achieve the payouts we all enjoyed to keep our personal and the country's economy moving. In this interview, learn the full story, the years of work prior, the teams, the collaboration and the culmination of it coming to life as COVID hit, "...we had already prepared to work remotely and as COVID hit went to WFH in 24 hours..." We invite you to join the LIVE broadcast via Ryan the Lions Linked Profile and ask that you engage with questions of interest for Richard and Justine and again that you share your own posts after the event adding your voice to the positive change.
Join Yvonne Daymond along with host Ryan the Lion as we look at what we consider an extraordinary career in IT having progressed from Development Management through to Program Director across some of the biggest global brands and NZ's large Govt Ministries - #ROARSOME! ... which lead to an amazing career, and as a Fijian woman in the IT industry; working through it "I never had a role model, I didn't look for one, I was committed to doing my job well and enjoying the work I didn't think about it". So, expect an empowered story of success after success - with a lot of humility, having spoken with Yvonne, she is not one to make a song and dance about her achievements but accepted my view that and these are my words, "as a ground breaker in the IT industry her story will help and inspire others" So all the young people, young women or simply people looking for someone who inspires them into IT, I believe Yvonne's story will be of interest! We'll be running a series where we celebrate the Women in IT and take a look at their career's, what motivates them and what we can learn from their perspectives. #afqyWOMEN #Diversity #leadership
Join Jolie Hodson the CEO and Justine Smyth the Chair of Spark as we follow on from the International Women's Day with a special edition of A YARN LIVE for AFQY WOMEN with your host Ryan the Lion. This year on March 8th #afqyWOMEN hosted an #IWD2021 online breakfast with 80+ attendees - the group agreed, this should not just be one day a year but an everyday effort. We also saw the results through the public and private comments shared by various women about the positive impact enjoyed by them. See the post here: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/ryanashton_afqywomen-wids-rolemodels-activity-6774518082661687296-1PPg Hence we are running a special series beginning with Jolie and Justine to continue driving change through a range of stories. With regular communication and behaviours that support and lead culture change together we can all make a difference. In this interview we want to share in particular the story of these two women's' individual journeys to CEO and Chair of the same company; the moments, the hardships, the successes and then also to give us insight into leading one of New Zealand's largest companies. We invite you to join the LIVE broadcast via Ryan the Lions Linked Profile and ask that you engage with questions of interest for Jolie and Justine, and again that you share your own posts after the event adding your voice to the positive change.
