Welcome to Episode 76 of Tablesetters! Devin and Steve are back at the mics to bring you everything happening across the baseball landscape — from monster contracts and rising stars to organizational missteps and real-life tragedy. We begin with Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s jaw-dropping 14-year, $500 million extension — the third-largest contract in MLB history — and discuss what it means not just for the Blue Jays, but for a league that's fully leaning into early-career investments. With extensions this past week for Garrett Crochet, Ketel Marte, Jackson Merrill, Cal Raleigh, and Kristian Campbell, it's clear that locking in young stars is the model. Which leads us to a central question: Will the Orioles follow suit? With talent like Gunnar Henderson, Adley Rutschman, and Jackson Holliday blossoming, it's time for Baltimore to decide whether it wants to ride the wave — or get caught chasing it later. Next up, we pivot to injuries shaping the early season. Key arms and contributors are already shelved, including Blake Snell, Spencer Arrighetti, Zach Eflin, Reynaldo López, and Victor Robles. We assess the impact of those absences and who might rise to fill the void. From there, we spotlight the scorching start of Sacramento's Tyler Soderstrom, who's tied with Aaron Judge atop the MLB home run leaderboard. His success is forcing a conversation about top prospect Nick Kurtz, who's dominating Triple-A. The Athletics may have a good problem on their hands — but one that demands a creative solution soon. We also cover two sobering off-the-field stories. First, the resignation of Tigers Assistant GM Sam Menzin following serious allegations of misconduct — a reminder of the cultural accountability still needed in front offices. And second, the devastating nightclub collapse in Santo Domingo, which claimed 66 lives, including beloved figures from both music and baseball: Octavio Dotel, Tony Blanco, Rubby Pérez, and Nelsy Cruz. In one of the week's most powerful and human moments, Jarren Duran opened up about a suicide attempt he survived during a dark period in his career. His story, shared in a Netflix docuseries, is raw, courageous, and a vital reminder of the mental health challenges facing athletes today. And we close out with a look at Chase Dollander's MLB debut — 5 innings, 6 strikeouts, and his first career win — and Zac Veen's red-hot start in Triple-A. Colorado might not contend this year, but the future is taking shape. Plus, we take a few quick swings in Take a Pitch/Swing Away — including jersey etiquette at games, Kyle Tucker's potential contract value, and whether Mets players should be publicly name-dropping Sandy Alcantara. All that and more in this week's episode. Follow us on Instagram and Twitter @TablesettersPod, subscribe wherever you listen, and keep the conversation going — we're just getting warmed up.
A's General Manager David Forst discusses the culture change in the organization, the young core and recent contract extensions, his keys for spring training, first base options and the plans for Soderstrom, Brent Rooker heading back to the outfield and the pitch depth in the organization. Oklahoma Judge Traci Soderstrom's resignation, prompted by her texting during a murder trial, comes amidst prior allegations of misconduct. The revelations, which emerged during the trial of a man accused of manslaughter in the death of a 2-year-old child, have cast a shadow over Soderstrom's judicial tenure. Soderstrom's inappropriate phone usage during the murder trial garnered widespread attention when a video surfaced in July, revealing her engaged in texting and Facebook use during critical trial phases. Despite the severity of the case, Soderstrom admitted to her lapse in judgment, acknowledging the impropriety of her actions. In a statement following her resignation announcement, Soderstrom expressed remorse for her conduct, emphasizing the gravity of her actions irrespective of the trial's nature. However, this is not the first time Soderstrom has faced scrutiny for her texting habits during a trial. Last year, Soderstrom faced criticism for allegedly sending over 500 texts to her bailiff during the same murder trial. Court documents revealed that the texts included mocking remarks directed at prosecutors while praising the defense attorney. These allegations underscore concerns about Soderstrom's impartiality and adherence to judicial ethics. Chief Justice M. John Kane IV, in his petition recommending Soderstrom's removal, cited a pattern of gross neglect of duty and partiality, as evidenced by her extensive texting during trial proceedings. Soderstrom's interactions with the court bailiff, as outlined in court documents, further underscored her lack of temperament to serve as a judge. An order of dismissal in the case filed on Friday notes that Soderstrom has voluntarily resigned and agrees to not seek any judicial position in the state again. Soderstrom was elected as a judge in November 2022 and took the bench in January 2023. She had served for six months before the murder trial. The defendant in the trial was eventually found guilty by a jury of second-degree manslaughter and sentenced to time served. The resignation of Judge Soderstrom marks a significant development in addressing judicial misconduct within the Oklahoma judiciary. While her departure signifies accountability for her actions, it also prompts reflection on the broader implications of electronic device usage in the courtroom. As legal experts and policymakers contemplate measures to prevent similar incidents in the future, the spotlight remains on upholding the integrity and impartiality of the judicial system. The Oklahoma Supreme Court's response to Soderstrom's resignation will likely shape the trajectory of efforts to maintain ethical standards among judges statewide. In the aftermath of this controversy, stakeholders emphasize the importance of transparency, accountability, and adherence to established judicial norms to restore public trust in the judiciary. In a shocking revelation, Oklahoma's Lincoln County District Judge Traci Soderstrom is under intense scrutiny after allegedly sending over 500 text messages filled with mockery and bias during a pivotal murder trial she presided over in June. According to a petition filed on Tuesday, these controversial texts were exchanged with a bailiff, in which Judge Soderstrom openly mocked trial participants, including attorneys, jurors, and witnesses. The exchanges displayed a palpable bias against state prosecutors while showing a clear inclination toward the defendant. She was also cited complimenting the defense attorney on numerous occasions. The allegations came to light following a thorough investigation into Judge Soderstrom's phone usage by the Council on Judicial Complaints. While Soderstrom's attorney has yet to provide a comment to major news outlets, including CNN, the details within the petition raise significant concerns about the impartiality of the judicial process in this particular trial. Presiding over a first-degree murder trial, Soderstrom saw the defendant being pronounced guilty of a lesser charge - second-degree manslaughter. The verdict led to a sentence of four years, equivalent to the time the defendant already served, ensuring no further jail time. Conversely, a co-defendant in the case, charged with enabling child abuse, received a harsher 25-year prison sentence after accepting a plea deal. Several texts have been highlighted to emphasize the alleged misconduct. In one exchange, Soderstrom remarked about the district attorney "sweating through his coat." In another text, she oddly inquired about the prosecutor's hand size, questioning, "Why does he have baby hands? … They are so weird looking," as noted by Chief Justice M. John Kane IV. Her apparent admiration for the defense attorney also shone through in her messages. "She's awesome," she texted the bailiff during one of the defense attorney's addresses to the jury, even considering aloud (or rather, in text) whether she could clap for her. Among the myriad of messages, other comments ranged from calling a police officer "pretty" to declaring a video as "boring" and even speculating on a juror's possible wig. One particularly alarming message hinted at her preconceived notions about the trial's outcome. She stated there would be "no way they get guilty on murder" because of a perceived lack of DNA evidence. Following the trial's conclusion, the district attorney's office was alerted by a sheriff's deputy about Soderstrom's continuous phone usage. The evidence was irrefutable: a 51-minute video clip from a courtroom camera showcased her extensive phone engagement. The Council on Judicial Complaints, after an in-person hearing with Judge Soderstrom, deemed her texts as severe breaches of the code of judicial conduct. When confronted about her phone usage during the trial, Soderstrom merely remarked that she was "texting about things that were – probably could have waited," brushing off the gravity of her actions by saying, "(I)t was like, 'Oh, that's funny. Move on.'" It wasn't just these text messages that have put her in hot water. The petition also highlighted several other instances of Soderstrom's inappropriate behavior both inside the courtroom and on her social media platforms. One notable instance was during her hearing where she reportedly used profanities three times within the initial six minutes of her testimony. The case against Judge Traci Soderstrom is now slated for January 3, 2024. She had assumed her role on the bench in the 23rd Judicial District of Oklahoma just earlier this year, in January 2023. With the integrity of the justice system hanging in the balance, the forthcoming trial will be closely watched by legal experts and the public alike. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Fantasy Baseball Notes – July 16, 2023 @ 3 pmSegments 1 and 2 – Weekend gamesAdditional Notes:1.The A's finally did something as they promoted Zack Gelof and Tyler Soderstrom. Both are Top 100 prospects for me, with Soderstrom having a chance to be an all-star caliber player. a.Esteury Ruiz has reportedly started hitting off a tee. Good news.b.As a side note. The A's had the sixth pick in the draft and went with Justin Wilson whose father played in the big leagues primarily for the Pirates. He never strikes out but with no power and modest speed. You have one of the deepest drafts in years, and this is the direction you go. The hope is that you are drafting the unicorn known as Luis Arraez, but lightning rarely strikes twice. What are your thoughts on what the A's are doing? 2.Many more rumors about the Angels willing to trade Ohtani. However, how will his finger issue affect his trade value? Your thoughts?3.Justin Verlander or Sandy Alcantara – Who do you want to rest of the season?a.Do you think a change of scenery would help Verlander or is he just not yet in synch because of an early season stint on the IL?4.As a Trea Turner owner, I'm not happy.
